LITURGY CORNERThis Thursday, July 14th, we celebrate andhonor St. Kateri Tekakwitha. She is the firstNative American to be recognized as a saint bythe Catholic Church. St. Kateri was born in1656, in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon. Her mother, an Algonquin, was captured by theMohawks and became the wife of a Mohawk

chief. St. Kateri contracted smallpox as a four-year-old childwhich scarred her skin. The scars were a source of humiliationin her youth. She was commonly seen wearing a blanket to hideher face. Worse, her entire family died during the outbreak andwas then raised by her uncle, who became the chief of thatMohawk clan. St. Kateri was known as a skilled worker, whowas diligent and patient. However, she refused to marry. Whenher adoptive parents proposed a suitor to her, she refused toentertain the proposal. They punished her by giving her morework to do, but she did not give in. Instead, she remained quietand diligent. Eventually they were forced to relent and acceptthat she had no interest in marriage. At age 19, KateriTekakwitha converted to Catholicism, taking a vow of chastityand pledging to marry only Jesus Christ. Her decision was veryunpopular with her adoptive parents and their neighbors. Someof her neighbors started rumors of sorcery. To avoidpersecution, she traveled to a Christian native community southof Montreal. According to legend, St. Kateri was very devoutand would put thorns on her sleeping mat. She often prayed forthe conversion of her fellow Mohawks. According to the Jesuitmissionaries that served the community where St. Kateri lived, she often fasted and when she would eat, she would taint herfood to diminish its flavor. On at least one occasion, she burnedherself. Such self-mortification was common among theMohawk. St. Kateri was very devout and was known for hersteadfast devotion. She was also very sickly and her practices ofself-mortification and denial may not have helped her health.Sadly, just five years after her conversion to Catholicism, shebecame ill and passed away at age 24, on April 17, 1680. Hername, Kateri, is the Mohawk form of Catherine, which she tookfrom St. Catherine of Siena. St. Kateri Tekakwitha wascanonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 21, 2012. She is thepatroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile andNative Americans. Have a blessed week! Lisa
