Dear Friends:

When I arrived as Pastor eight years ago, it became pretty clear to me quickly, that the John Brosnan family

was an integral part of parish life. John M. Brosnan was a Parish Trustee for many years, appointed by Father

Mason. His son John was and is still the Business Manager of our parish after twenty years of honorable ser-

vice as a New York City Police Officer.

The Brosnan clan has been, for decades, a great help to the life of our parish. So it's with sadness that we cele-

brated the funeral Mass for John M. Brosnan on Friday. John with his dear wife Maryrose raised their family

here at Our Lady of Lourdes. These children included Maryellen, Terrence, Anne, Alice, Kathleen and

John. John Sr. was also the grandfather to 14 and the greatgrandfather of two.

On behalf of all of the family of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, I want to extend our condolences to the Brosnan

family, with thanks to John Brosnan's many contributions to our parish community.

John M. Brosnan, RIP.

With Christmas quickly approaching, I want to encourage everyone to use these holy days of preparation in a

special way. That may come in an act of generosity for someone in need. An act in which you even surprise

yourself! It may also come in some action wherein you attempt to be a peacemaker. And bring together peo-

ple in families that have been long estranged.

It might also come through more time in prayer. Remember, unlike many parishes on Long Island, we have

Eucharistic Chapel devotion available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until the 8 p.m. Mass.

Why not drop in and pay our Lord a visit. That peaceful time before the Blessed Sacrament may well be the

oasis of calm you need in these crazy/busy times.

Maybe Advent will draw it's fullest meaning if you determine to personally reach out to someone you've

grown apart from. I find that very often we decide to end relationships that should really be saved.

It's not that hard to breach the divide. Pick up the phone or drop a card or email to that person with whom

you've parted. They may ignore your entreaty or not. But you will still have been doing something

that the Prince of Peace will be mightily pleased by.

Enjoy a prayerful and peaceful third week of Advent.

In the Love of Christ,

Msgr. Jim Lisante

Pastor

Parish Outreach

“We Care Blankets”

As our wonderful group of “Care Blanket” volunteers con-

tinue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 -

11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and

talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seri-

ously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing!

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed

blanket count stands at 2,157 I’m sure in no time at all we

will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our

lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring

love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care.

Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet

hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort.

If you are interested in joining our group please contact

“Paper Goods” Drive

On occasion, the folks who come to us for food assistance

will ask if we can provide paper products such as toilet

paper or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, re-

main our first priority! However, it would be a helpful ad-

dition to the folks we serve if we could offer some assis-

tance with paper goods. If you would consider a donation

of toilet paper or paper towels that would be a wonderful

thing! Thank you for all the good you do!

“Ministry of Consolation”

Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are espe-cially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.

Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this par-ticular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and tal-ents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.

Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gari-boldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consid-eration.

Parish Outreach Food Pantry

tinue to be as generous as your means allow during this

Christmas season and throughout the winter months. Each

and every donation is greatly appreciated.

ryday basis. May God Bless you and your families for all

the good you do in kindness to others!

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Never were Confirmed? Need to make your First Communion? Want to be Bap-

tized? It's not too late to join!

Let us help you get it done.

Are you interested in learning more about Catholicism? Do you have friends or acquaintances who are questioning what

Catholicism is all about? Do you have Catholic family members or friends who have fallen away from the Faith? Invite

them to investigate the truth about Catholicism by joining the RCIA group here at Our Lady of Lourdes. Our group meets

once a week, beginning in September. Practicing Catholics are encouraged to join as well – you are guaranteed to learn

things about the Church you never knew! We have room for all age groups.

In recent years there has been a great increase in the number of adults who are joining the Catholic Church. RCIA

(which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a program designed to help non-Catholics and non-practicing

Catholics learn more about Catholicism through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times and ceremonies. This

program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God as they consider becoming Catholic. There is no obligation to

join the Catholic Church.

Our Lady of Lourdes RCIA program is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you

are not yet sure whether you want to become Catholic, you are still welcome to participate as you make your decision.

People from all sorts of religious backgrounds join the RCIA. Some have been baptized in another Christian religion and

some have not. Some have been practicing members of a Christian religion for years and some have had little or no reli-

gious instruction or support. Some are already Catholic but are seeking a greater understanding of our Faith.

The RCIA is a mix of praying, learning facts, discussing how these apply to our lives, participating in prayerful ceremo-

nies (called “rites”) and most importantly, using all of these experiences to build and grow in a relationship with God.

If you're interested in attending, please call the rectory to get started on your journey...

What is RCIA?

Sheen)

ELECTION 2016: We pray that Donald Trump’s pro-life campaign promises can be fulfilled:

*Passage of legislation defunding Planned Parenthood, which has performed over 7 million abortions since 1973

*Passage of legislation banning abortions after 20 weeks’ gestation (Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act)

*Repeal and replace Obamacare abortion/abortifacient mandates

*Mexico City Policy made into permanent law (NGO’s that receive federal money must certify that they will not perform, promote

or lobby for the legalization of abortion in other countries.)

*Permanently defund the UN Population Fund – a ‘cheerleader’ for China’s forced abortion and sterilization programs

*Pro-life nominees for Supreme Court and federal judgeships

*Pro-life cabinet members and advisors

DID YOU KNOW? * Planned Parenthood operates 88% of the medical abortion (RU486 abortion pill) facilities in the US.

* 64% of PP's abortion business in Iowa involves "telemedicine" video conferencing.

* Reuters reported that in 2014, abortion pills made up 43% of the of abortions at PP.

* PP performs almost 1/3 of all abortions in the US - over 320,000 per year.

* PP aborts 160 children for every one adoption referral.

* PP performed less than 2% of all breast exams in the US in FY 2014/15 - physical breast exams, not mammograms. PP does not

perform mammograms.

*PP performed less than 1% of all Pap tests in the US in FY 2014/15.

PROTECTING LIFE, NOT PUNISHING WOMEN: Some abortion advocates claim that pro-lifers want to punish women seek-

ing abortion. They argue that women were punished prior to Roe v Wade, and that if Roe is repealed, women will once again be

punished. Clarke Forsythe of Americans United for Life notes that there were zero prosecutions of pregnant women under any law

in the US between 1922 and 1973. Even Justice Blackmun, who wrote the majority opinion in Roe acknowledged the absence of

punishment for women procuring abortion under prevailing laws. If Roe is overturned, abortion will not be made illegal nationwide

or restore state abortion laws to what they were prior to 1973. Most state laws prohibiting abortion have either been repealed or

overturned since 1973. Therefore, most states would have to enact new laws to prohibit abortion. Abortion law prior to Roe showed

a high level of sympathy for the pregnant woman. Saving babies, not punishing women, has been, and will continue to be, the goal

of the pro-life movement. (Tim Bradley, Charlotte Lozier Institute blog, 10/6/16)

Week #7 - Praying the Rosary Like Never Before

Dr. Edward Sri is a nationally sought Catholic speaker who appears regularly on EWTN, and is a found-

ing leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students). In this discussion of his book "The

New Rosary in Scripture: Biblical Insights on Praying the Twenty Mysteries" (Servant Books), Dr. Sri

shares John Paul II's practical strategies for praying the Rosary better, so that you can encounter Jesus

more deeply in prayer.

Parishioner Comments

Awesome! Dr. Sri covers this subject in depth. I’ll need to listen to it two or three times to find all the

golden nuggets hidden in this talk.

Richard - Simi Valley, CA

The rosary is all about Jesus... from now on, ‘praying’ the rosary will be much more than ‘reciting’ the

rosary!

PRAYER FOR THE ADVENT WREATH—3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Lord, our God, we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel, the Hope of all people. He is the Wisdom that teaches and guides us. He is the Savior of us all. O Lord, let your blessing come upon us as we light two (purple) advent candles and the third (pink) of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise of salvation. May He come quickly and not delay. We ask this in His holy name. Amen. Rejoicing

"(The desert) will bloom with abundant flowers and rejoice with joyful song." "Rejoice in the Lord always!" "Shout for joy, O daughter Zion!"

The Scriptures for the Third Sunday of Advent proclaim their message in no uncertain terms: Rejoice! Joy is all around us and our celebration of Advent calls us to discover it. The joy that the Scripture passages speak about is not a joy that equates with hilarious laughter. It is a joy that comes from a security with our God, those around us, and our place in the world. It is the joy Isaiah describes when he writes, "I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul." It is a joy that cannot be bought or obtained from artificial highs. It is a joy that comes from our living faith in a living God.

It is the joy we feel as we approach the birth of our Savior and remember the awesome beauty of what happened on that cold Bethlehem night.

Rejoice!
