In the Gospel from John, Jesus advises us, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever be-lieves in me will never thirst.” By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus is telling us by what He says, how He acts, and in fact Who He is that He is the Word of God made flesh. God reveals to us the Word alive in the most complete way possi-ble, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are to hear the Word and know Who Jesus is; we are to accept that Word into our minds and hearts — into our spirit — and we are to let that Word begin to change us. That change is represented by knowing what God wants us to do. Today’s Holy Scriptures make that clear. We must pray that we respond and do be good stewards of our time, talent, and treasure so that we can do the work God wants us to do. In the Second Reading, Paul reminds us that we need to undergo a conversion — in effect put on a new self. Our entire lives need to be devoted to change, so that we renew ourselves from the inside and live a stewardship way of life according to God’s ways. Charles Spurgeon, an English minister in the 1800s once wrote, “Conversion is a turning onto the right road. The next thing to do is to walk on it.” That is our trial. Once we experience conversion, we must follow through by doing what the Lord wishes us to do. Early Church Fathers and Abortion One of the arguments in Roe v Wade court was: “It perhaps is not generally appreciated that the restrictive criminal abortion laws ...are not of ancient or even of common law origin." This is misleading. Consider the following teachings by early Church Fathers. The first passage comes from the Dida-che (Greek for “teaching”), which is usu-ally dated as early as the end of the first century: “…you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is begot-ten” (chapter 2). This statement is as clear as it gets. The second passage is from St. Barnabas from the early second century: “You shall love your neigh-bour more than your own soul. You shall not slay the child by procuring abortion; nor, again, shall you destroy it after it is born” (Chapter 19). St. Basil the Great (c.330-379): “Women also who admin-ister drugs to cause abortion, as well as those who take poi-sons to destroy unborn children, are murderesses” (Letter 188, to Amphilochius concerning the canons, section 8). Notice here how St. Basil is not making any distinctions about what stage in the pregnancy is okay to administer drugs to cause abortion. Nowhere in these quotes is there a distinction being made between any "stages" of life. For the Fathers, abortion is unequivocal taking of life. Pro-Life Articles
