O 6, 2019 2 — O L L V C C

The month of October began this last Tuesday. October is undoubtedly one of the nicest months of the year in terms of weather. The intense heat of the summer is finally behind us and we are now enjoying the very comfortable temperatures of the autumn season. The month of October is dedicated to the Blessed Mother under the title Our Lady of the Rosary. In the tradition of the Church, October has always brought our attention onto the prayer of the rosary. The rosary most likely began as a practice imitating the monastic prayers of the monks who prayed Divine Office each day, which included all of the 150 Psalms. The laity, many of whom could not read, substituted 50, or even 150, Ave Marias (Hail Marys) for the Psalms. The Hail Mary prayer, at least the first half of it, is inspired from the Gospel according to St. Luke. It seems to date back as early as the 2nd century. To help them keep count of how many times the prayer was said, people would tie knots on a cord. From the early tradition of the Rosary, there have been 15 mysteries divided into three groups, with five mysteries in each group. The three groups are the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries. In 2002, St. Pope John Paul II added five more mysteries in a group called the Luminous Mysteries, or Mysteries of Light, bringing the total number of mysteries to 20. Catholics are encouraged to pray the rosary each day, meditating on the Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday; the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday; the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday; and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday. Praying the Rosary is strongly recommended during the month of October. Because of its contemplative nature, the praying of the rosary can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. If praying the five mysteries the Rosary in one day appears to be too much, we are encouraged to at least try to pray a decade of the Rosary each day; the Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, and the Glory Be. Since the Rosary is made up of memorized prayers, a great time for praying the rosary can be while exercising, while driving, waiting for a traffic light, waiting for a doctor’s appointment; literally anywhere. And even if you don’t have the rosary beads available, you can keep a mental count or even use your fingers! The Rosary is a simple prayer of repetition, which helps our hearts and minds to reflect on the mystery at hand. The Joyful Mysteries: the Annunciation, Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, Birth of Jesus, Presentation of Jesus in the temple, the Finding of Jesus at age 12 in the temple. The Sorrowful Mysteries: the Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Scourging of Jesus, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying if the Cross, the Crucifixion. The Glorious Mysteries: the Resurrection, the Ascension into Heaven, the Decent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heave, the Coronation of Mary as Queen Mother of Heaven and earth. The Luminous Mysteries: Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, First Miracle at Wedding in Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, the Institution of the Eucharist.

I am very pleased to announce that we have reached our 2019 CSA goal of $114,654.00!!! I am very grateful to one of our parishioners who donated $5,000 last week that got us to the top. I would also like to thank everyone who pledged and donated towards the Catholic Stewardship Appeal this year. Thank you to everyone who contributed through the many CSA second collections and/or who placed donations into the CSA box in the vestibule. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. If you have made a 2019 CSA pledge and still have not fulfilled the pledge I ask that you please do so. All donations given to the CSA over and above our set goal will be given back to the parish! Your contributions are very much appreciated and very much needed. God bless everyone for making this years CSA campaign a success!
