Vatican News January 28, 2018

In his homily during the Mass, the Pope focused especially on the idea of Mary as Mother.

“The presence of the Mother makes this temple a family home for us children,” he said. And so we are able to recognize the Church as “our home, the home where we find rest, consolation, protection, refuge.” Pope Francis recalled that our ancestors have taught us, in the difficult moments of life, to always turn to Mary, to gather together “under the mantle of the Holy Mother of God.” Mary, he said, “Guards our faith, protects relationships, saves us in stormy weather, and preserves us from evil.” When Mary our Mother is in the home, “the devil does not enter.” When we pray to Mary, the Pope continued, a traditional prayer says, “despise not our petitions.” Mary never despises our petitions, but always answers them promptly – just as, she promptly went to Elizabeth in her time of need, as we hear in the Gospels. We also pray that Mary might free us from danger. “The Lord Himself knows that we need shelter and protection in the midst” of the many dangers we face in life, the Pope said. It is precisely for this reason, he continued, that from the Cross Jesus entrusted St John, the beloved disciple; and all His future disciples to His blessed Mother.

Like St John, the Pope said, we too must “take Mary into our own homes,” inviting her “into our homes, our hearts, our lives.” Christians cannot be “neutral or detached” from Mary, our Mother, he said, or we will lose our identity as children. And so, the Pope said, “let us make the Mother the guest of our daily life, the constant presence in our home, our safe haven.”

Papal Intention for FebruarySay “no” to CorruptionThat those who have material, political or spiri-tual power may resist any lure of corruption.

PAGE 2FROM the PASTOR’S DESKREVEREND Fr. PASCUAL ABAYA IV

After Jesus called his first disciples, preached and performed a miracle in the synagogue, He

continued on doing miracles especially healing the sick and casting out demons. The word was out, a miracle worker was present in their midst. Jesus did not even have enough time to rest, moving from one place to another. As the demand for healing increased, Jesus had to help other people wherever He was needed. Everybody was indeed looking for Him. What was very remarkable in these events was Jesus’ concern for the people, love for them to the point of restoring them to their whole being. Their physical needs were addressed and made them continue to live their lives. By Jesus’ power and might, people were restored to health. They live their lives totally new. All these were made possible because of one man, Jesus. Jesus did not waste any time where He was needed. His mission was made clear through preaching and healing, bringing salvation to the body and soul. We may have the same longing for Jesus’ presence today. For the main reason that we also need to be healed from any ailments we have. Our demand of Him is so great that we focus more on our physical need and not on our spiritual need. Life has been very difficult at times. We are burdened. When things do not happen the way we want things to be, we are

blinded by our self-centeredness and even come to blame things on God. We think that He is the cause of our miseries, anxieties, desperation and hopelessness. All these happen because we think that we can have everything in this world except God. Our lives are being controlled by our desire for things of this world, fame, pride, passion, richness or addiction. When in such situations, we become unaware that we are already hurting our children, destroying our families and even ourselves. We become ill in mind and heart. Our desire for such things are overwhelming and controlling that what matters now is my life, my own, myself. At a point in time, we come to realize our own weaknesses, our faults and come to our senses. This is when we start to seek Him that He may take hold of us from our trials and tribulations. Well, it is not too late to do that with Jesus for He is full of mercy and kindness. He comes at the point of our lives when we need Him most. And when He comes, we also need to be ready to live our lives anew. That we need to turn to Him with faithfulness and trust. And to fill our minds and hearts with hope for indeed He is our Redeemer and our Life. His graciousness can make us realize that our lives can never be complete without Him. Reach out to Him.

REACH OUT TO JESUS

Welcome to OLGC

Deacon Ray and Tyra Lamb

Deacon Ray was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on 18 December, 1958. His father is Raymond

Lamb Sr. (deceased) and his mother is Glenda Lamb who currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is the oldest of three boys that God blessed his parents with. Ray’s father was in the US Air Force so he spent most of his early years traveling the world with his family. After graduating High School in Stuttgart, Germany, Ray went to college, graduated and joined the US Army where he faithfully served his country for 30 years and retired as a Colonel in 2010. Ray now does occasional contract work with the Department of the Navy. During Ray’s career, he was transferred all over the world. The last move was to Hawaii and is now the place that the Lambs call home. Why … nowhere in the world have they found such an extraordinary group of loving people. Ray met Tyra (Washington) Lamb in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981. They fell in love and four months later they were married. You could say that they each knew what they wanted in a spouse and it didn’t take

long for them to determine that they found it in each other. Thirty-six years later they are still going strong, thanks be to God, for without Him it would not have been possible!

Tyra is a career Licensed Social Worker having worked in nearly every field of social work for over 30 years. She is currently the U.S. Army’s Pacific Region Lead (supervisor) for several programs to include Domestic Abuse and Victim Advocacy. Her area of expertise includes Child Abuse prevention, working with families with special needs and working with new parents. Ray and Tyra have been blessed with 3 adult children and 3 grandchildren. When Ray and Tyra were approached by their parish priest in 2012 and asked if they would consider entering the deaconate formation process, the answer was a resounding “yes”. The ability to

serve God and the Catholic community in ministry has been a constant calling in Ray’s life. Apparently God was not ready for that to happen until he returned to Hawaii and retired. God has accomplished this work and Ray was ordained on January 18, 2018. Ray and Tyra are excited about serving the people of Our Lady of Good Council to the best of their ability and ask for your continued prayers and encouragement as they join their new community of faith.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE ARTS AT OLGC SCHOOL. All of our children are naturally creative. This is a God given gift.

When we take time and energy to nurture this gift, it can continue to grow throughout our lifetime. Through the arts, a person’s Faith can be inspired, understanding of the gospel and Bible stories can be revealed, and an appreciation of beauty, a kind heart, clear thinking, skills and work ethic all can develop. These qualities are helpful in many areas of life and worship, study and work. In the news... Eighth grader Kailee Tomas’ artwork has been selected for the Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibit at the Hawaii State Art Museum (HiSAM). The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition initiative for creative teens. The 2018 Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards showcases the exemplary artwork and talent of Hawaii’s students in grades 7-12. This year, 997 student artists submitted over 1,500 artwork for the jurors to consider. After much deliberation, 233 artwork were selected for the 2018 Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition. You also may have seen and enjoyed the local newspaper’s Keiki Kalikimaka ornament contest, including the work of Lyon Ferreira (Preschool 4). Be on the lookout for the Young Artists of Hawaii contest. Last year we had a winner, Andrea Orioste (grade 4), and we are hopeful for our fine applicants this year. Our OLGC student artists (all 170, Preschool - 8th grade) students are working hard on their projects for the upcoming student Art Show, scheduled to be held at the Pastoral Center on February 10 and 11. Please plan to stay after Mass for art and fellowship on that weekend.

In today’s Gospel we hear of a great number of suffering people who seek the healing touch of Jesus. He could not respond to them all. But the Gospel also reveals Jesus, after praying in solitude, sensing an urgency to proclaim the Good News of his Father’s redemptive love to those who suffer in the nearby villages and towns. Stewards are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, to respond to those who suffer with compassion. How are we responding to the suffering in our world? How are we using our gifts to continue the work of Christ’s redemptive healing?

BISHOP LARRY SILVA

LITURGICALCATECHESIS by Rev. Alfred Omar B. GuerreroParochial Vicar/Director of Liturgy

In our homes we are called to be prophets to our spouses and to our children and grandchildren, because we are all subject to the unclean spirits that long to break marriages and families apart. If we try to do things our way, we may make things worse, because prophets who are not sent by the Lord bring death, not life. Yet if we are attentive to the Word of God we hear in this assembly and remain in communion with Jesus, we can speak with authority in break the destructive patterns of ignorance and selfishness that can affect our own families. In our schools or places of work, which are often influenced by unclean spirits of the advancement of the individual without reference to anyone else, we can cast out that spirit as prophets in the name of Jesus by living ethically and witnessing to the power of honesty and hard work that tries to make everyone successful. In our body politic we often confront an unclean spirit that puts special interests – often my own interests – above the common good, denying reality when we want to do so. There we who have been freed by the Lord can be prophets who free others from these unclean spirits.

Just like the worship at the temple in ancient Israel, a priest is necessary for the holy sacrifice

of the Mass. “Every legitimate celebration of the Eucharist is directed by the Bishop, either in person or through Priests who are his helpers…A Priest, also, who possesses within the Church the sacred power of Orders to offer sacrifice in the person of Christ, presides by this fact over the faithful people gathered here and now, presides over their prayer, proclaims to them the message of salvation, associates the people with himself in the offering of sacrifice through Christ in the Holy Spirit to God the Father, and gives his brothers and sisters the Bread of eternal life and partakes of it with them. Therefore, when he celebrates the Eucharist, he must serve God and the people with dignity and humility, and by his bearing and by the way he pronounces the divine words he

must convey to the faithful the living presence of Christ” (GIRM, 92-93). The priest-celebrant acts in persona Christi Capitis (in the person of Christ the head) at the Eucharist. Without a priest, the Eucharist cannot be celebrated. That is why promoting and encouraging men to consider ministerial priesthood is the responsibility of all members of the Body of Christ.

Word of the Week: Celebrant - The presiding minister at worship. Hence, the presiding priest

at Mass may be referred to as the celebrant. Use of the term in this sense must be balanced, however, by the emphasis in contemporary liturgical theology that all those in the liturgical assembly-priest and people alike-celebrate the Mass and together offer the sacrifice to God.
