GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UN-DERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 17, 2017 3rd Sunday of Advent

"There is one ... coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie." Untying sandal straps was no prestigious job. In the days of John the Baptist, those straps would have been espe-cially unpleasant to deal with. Besides the usual odors that ac-company sockless leather footwear, there would have been the grime and dirt from the sandy roads and paths that swirled around the people who went everywhere on foot. Taking off someone's shoes upon their arrival was the task of the lowly serv-ants. So when John says he's unworthy of doing this task for the "one who is coming after me," he is putting himself in a very humble position. And rightly so. John realizes that the Christ-the Anointed One, the Messiah-is so far above him, so far above any of us, that we are truly unworthy of him. Indeed, the Son of God is not just the greatest of men; he is God-made-man and in his presence we most appropriately should bow in humble homage. Yet this God chose to stoop down to our human level and walk among us. He chose to get his sandals dirty. And still today he chooses to allow us to encounter him as a friend and companion. But as John reminds us by his example, this encounter with the Lord is not the result of our own merits or accomplishments. We are sinners who stand in need of Christ's help. But thanks be to God, he is always willing to extend this help to us. As St. Paul says in today's epistle, "May the God of peace make you perfect-ly holy." Indeed it is God who does the perfecting, not us by our own power. So let us approach the Lord this Advent season with a spirit of hopeful humility, trusting that God alone can make us worthy of welcoming his Son.

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDI-MIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA (Gospel Meditation) 17 de diciembre de 2017 3er Domingo de Adviento

Se acerca ya el Nacimiento del Señor. Es por este motivo que la nota principal de este Tercer Domingo de Adviento es la alegría. La alegría es una parte esencial de nuestra fe y de nuestra vida de bautizados. Como seguidores de Cristo, debemos dar un testimo-nio alegre y convincente frente a la sociedad de hoy, muchas veces sumergida en la tristeza y el consumismo. La segunda lec-tura de hoy dice, "Vivan siempre alegres, oren sin cesar, den gra-cias en toda ocasión, pues esto es lo que quiere Dios de ustedes en Cristo Jesús" (1 Tes 5, 16-18). El Papa Francisco actualmente nos lo explica de la siguiente manera: "También nosotros, cuando estamos en la oscuridad, que no vemos nada: 'Yo sé, Señor, que esta tristeza se volverá alegría. ¡No sé cómo, pero lo sé!'. Un acto de fe en el Señor. ¡Un acto de fe! ...Y el signo que nosotros tenemos de esta alegría en la es-peranza es la paz" (Homilía del 30 de mayo de 2014). Nuestro reto es no impedir la acción del Espíritu Santo creando un clima de esperanza en nosotros mismos, para así ser portadores de la luz y la alegría que implica el tener al Señor entre nosotros. ¿Tenemos esperanza? ¿Tenemos alegría? Todo nuestro ser debe de comunicar signos visibles de gozo, estar atentos congruentes con lo que hacemos y decimos. Nuestra identidad como cris-tianos es punto clave como seguidores de Cristo. Como ejemplo tenemos a Juan Bautista: "Yo soy la voz que grita en el desierto: 'Enderecen el camino del Señor', como anunció el profeta Isaías" (Jn 1, 23). ¿Hemos enderezado el camino en este Ad-viento?

Un continuo tópico de conversación por estos años lleva adelante que en efecto ha habido una masiva caída de atención en la Igle-sia. Más y más gente habla acerca de ser "espiritual 2 y no" relig-ioso" ¿Tienen alguna Teoría de porque esto continua pasando? Un primo envejecerte una vez me dijo: Si tu solamente le dices a la gente que se van a ir al infierno, ellos podrían regresar a la Iglesia. ¡Lo siento, primo, Yo no pienso así! Me crucé con este ensayo de Ronald Rolheiser acerca de este duro tópico. Lo edité aquí para este boletín. Usted puede ver la pieza complete en la sección de archivos de Noviembre 17,2014 en Rolheiser.com La tentación dentro de os círculos religiosos es culpar a lo que está pasando a la secularidad, cultura secular, mucha gente arguye, es quizás el poder narcótico siempre perpetrado en este planeta. Ambos por Bueno y por malo. Esto nos superficialita a muchos de nosotros totalmente con seductivas promesas de cielo con su lado de eternidad. Dentro de nuestro mundo seculariza-do. En busca de la buena vida simplemente exprime nuestros profundos deseos religiosos. Interesantemente esto es también la mayor crítica que los extremistas Islámicos hacen de la cultu-ra occidental. Para ellos esto es una droga, que una vez ingeri-da, no tiene cura. Eso es por lo que ellos quieren bloquear a su juventud de la influencia de occidente. Pero ¿Es esto verdad? ¿Es enemiga la cultura occidental? Somos nosotros seguidores de la Iglesia, la última verdad remanente de Dios y verdad que queda, profética y marginalizada en una sociedad que se traga a irreligiosos y no creyentes, hay más que suficiente evidencia para eso; pero, debajo de esto y no es de poca profundidad es alergia congénita a nuestra Iglesia, los verdaderos deseos religiosos ¿Todavía queman y la Iglesia deberían preguntarse ellas mismas?: ¿Porqué no están más gente volvien-do a nosotros a tratar sus verdades religiosas? ¿Porqué a pesar de toda efectivamente, mucha gente tiene esta actitud? “La Iglesia no tiene nada que ofrecerme: Yo encuentro esto aburrido, irrelevante, cazado dentro de sus problemas menores, sin esperanzas de caminar con mi vida". Secularismo, es sin duda parcialmente culpable, pero también son las Iglesias mismas. Hay un axioma que dice: Todo ateísmo es un parásito de un mal teísmo. La lógica también sostiene acerca de actitudes en adelante en la Iglesia: malas actitudes con respecto a la Iglesia, alimentan malas prácticas religiosas. El gran doctor Judío, Rabino Abraham Joshua Heschel, podría estar de acuerdo. En su libro Dios en Busca del Hombre, él escribe: “Es costumbre culpar a la ciencia secular y a la filosofía anti-religiosa para eclipsar a la religión en la sociedad moderna, sería más honesto culpar a la religión de nuestros propios defectos. La religión declina, no porque esta fue refuta-da, sino, porque viene a ser irrelevante, torpe, opresiva, insípi-da. Cuando la fe es completamente reemplazada por el credo, la adoración por la disciplina, el amor por el hábito; cuando la crisis de hoy es ignorada por el esplendor del pasado; cuando la fe viene a ser una herencia más que una fuente de vida; cuando la religión habla solamente n nombre de la autoridad más que la voz de la compasión, este mensaje viene a ser sin sentido...Hace algunos años, yo escuché a un ministro Evangélico declarar el problema dieta manera: Cuando las Iglesias Cristianas tenemos e Agua Viva, el Agua de Cristo promete apagar todos los fuegos y toda la sed. Pero, este es el problema. Estamos teniendo el ¡Agua Viva donde está el fuego! En lugar de estar regando el agua en todas ¡partes, excepto donde se está quemando! Él está correcto. La respuesta al Éxodo masivo de nuestras Iglesias no es culpa de la cultura, es hacer mejores Iglesias.

From the Pastor’s Desk A continuing topic of conversation for these past years leading up to today is the fact that there’s been a massive drop off in church attendance. More and more people speak about being “spiritual” and not “religious.” Do you have any theories as to why this continues to happen? An elderly cousin once said to me. “If you just tell people they are going to hell, that would bring them back to church!” Sorry, cousin, I don’t think so! I came across this essay by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser regarding this tough topic. I edited it here for the bulletin. You can see the fuller piece in the archives section, November 17, 2014 at Rol-heiser.com. The temptation inside religious circles is to blame what’s hap-pening on secularity. Secular culture, many people argue, is perhaps the most powerful narcotic ever perpetrated on this planet, both for good and for bad. It swallows most of us whole with its seductive promises of heaven on this side of eternity. Within our secularized world, the pursuit of the good life simply squeezes out almost all deeper religious desire. Interestingly, this is also the major criticism that Islamic extremists make of Western culture. For them it’s a drug, which once ingested, has no cure. That’s why they want to block their youth from Western influences. But is this true? Is secular culture the enemy? Are we, church-goers, the last true remnant of God and truth left standing, prophetic and marginalized in a society that’s shal-low, irreligious, and godless? Many, including myself, would argue that this conclusion is far, far too simple. Secular society can be shallow, irreligious, and godless, there’s more than suffi-cient evidence for that; but, beneath its shallowness and its con-genital allergy to our churches, real religious desire still burns and the churches must ask themselves: Why aren’t more people turning to us to deal with their religious desires? Why are so many people who are seeking spirituality not interested in look-ing at what the church offers? Why, instead, are they turning to everything except the church? Why, indeed, do so many people have the attitude: “The church has nothing to offer me: I find it boring, irrelevant, caught up inside its own petty issues, hope-lessly out of step with my life.” Secularity is, no doubt, partly to blame, but so too are the churches themselves. There’s an axiom that says: All atheism is a parasite off of bad theism. That logic also holds regarding attitudes towards the church: Bad attitudes towards the church feed off bad church practices. The great Jewish scholar, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, would agree. In his book, God In Search of Man, he writes: “It is customary to blame secular science and anti-religious philosophy for the eclipse of religion in modern society. It would be more honest to blame religion for its own defeats. Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than the voice of compassion – its message be-comes meaningless…” Some years ago, I heard an Evangelical minister state the problem this way: As Christian churches we have the living water, the water Christ promised would quench all fires and all thirsts. But, this is the problem: We aren’t get-ting the living water to where the fires are! Instead we are spraying water everywhere, except where it’s burning! He’s right. The answer to the mass exodus from our churches is not to blame the culture; it’s to make better churches!
