This weekend we take the annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment (CCHD). CCHD was founded to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding

organizations that help individuals help themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in com-munities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and reach out to those living on the margins. Please give generously to the CCHD Col-lection. Gratefulness

This week our nation celebrates Thanksgiving Day. Per-haps it will be easy for many of us to thank God for the good things that we have received from his provident hand while we try to pass over those that did not seem very good at all. Yet, this Thanksgiving Day, we are invited once again to offer praise and thanksgiving to God for all our joys, our hopes, our anxieties, sacrifices and even our grief. As we take our places at the table with our relatives and friends let us remem-ber that our central act of faith is thanksgiving itself —for Eu-charist means thanksgiving. Our own celebration of faith is patterned on a family meal —Christ’s celebration of the Passo-ver Festival. Our ancestors in the faith praised God with a se-ries of blessings and recitations of Scripture —Baruch atah Adonai. In offering praise to God for food, the food was made holy; in sharing the food that had been blessed, the people in turn were made holy. This was the sacrificial meal that cele-brated the liberation of Israel. At every Eucharist we remember and celebrate that awesome night when at supper Christ of-fered the perfect sacrifice to God. When we share the sacred meal that is Eucharist —the Body and Blood of Christ, we too are made holy and become eucharist ourselves. As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day this year let us open our eyes to the wonder of God’s existence and ours; so that our celebration may be genuine thanksgiving. We celebrate Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00am. It is my hope that as we celebrate, we will remember that our lives are a continuous act of thanksgiving to God through our daily activities, all of which should give glory and praise to God from whom all blessings flow.

Esta semana nuestra nación celebra el Día de Acción de Gracias. Tal vez sea fácil para muchos de nosotros agradecer a Dios por las cosas buenas que hemos recibido de su mano providente mientras tratamos de dejar de lado las que no nos pareceron muy buenas. Sin embargo, en este Día de Acción de Gracias, somos invitados una vez más a ofrecer alabanza y agradecimiento a Dios por todas nuestras alegrías, nuestras esperanzas, nuestras ansiedades, sacrifi-cios e incluso nuestro dolor. Al tomar nuestro lugar a la mesa con nues-tros familiares y amigos recordemos que nuestro acto central de fe es en si mismo agradecimiento —porque Eucaristía significa acción de gracias . Nuestra celebración de fe esta moldada por una comida famil-iar —la celebración del Festival de la Pascua por Cristo. Nuestros ante-pasados en la fe alabaron a Dios con una serie de bendiciones y recitaciones de la Escritura —Baruch atah Adonai. Al ofrecer alabanza a Dios por los alimentos, éstos eran santificados; al compartir los alimen-tos que habían sido bendecidos, el pueblo a su vez era santificado. Esta fue la comida sacrificia que celebra la liberación de Israel. En cada Eu-caristía recordamos y celebramos esa noche maravillosa cuando en la cena Cristo ofreció el sacrificio perfecto a Dios. Cuando compartimos la comida sagrada que es la Eucaristía —el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, también nosotros somos santificados y nos convertimos en eucaristía. Al celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias este año abramos los ojos a la maravilla de la existencia de Dios y la nuestra para que nuestra cele-bración sea auténtica acción de gracias. Celebramos la Eucaristía el Día de Acción de Gracias a las 9:00am. Es mi esperanza que al celebrar, recordemos que nuestras vidas son un acto continuo de acción de gracias a Dios por medio de nuestras ac-tividades cotidianas, todo lo cual debe dar gloria y alabanza a Dios de quien fluyen todas las bendiciones.

LA PROMESA DEL PARAÍSO

En los Estados Unidos escogemos y eligimos líderes para ocupar los puestos políticos. La mayoría le confía la autoridad a unos pocos y nadie se mantiene en el poder permanentemente. El reino de Dios es completamente diferente. Cristo es nuestro Rey, pero se hizo humano para que nosotros pudiéramos tener la experiencia del reino de Dios. Jesús tenía el poder de perdonar a los pecadores, sanara los enfermos y hasta resucitar a los muer-tos, pero sin la parafernalia o símbolos del éxito y del poder. Todos estamos libres de aceptar a Jesucristo o de rechazarlo como hizo Judas. Cuando Jesús estaba en la cruz los espectadores se burlaban de ese “rey” sin poder para “salvarse a sí mismo”. THE PROMISE OF PARADISE

In the United States we choose and elect leaders from among ourselves to political office. Authority is vested in the few by the many, and yet no one has a permanent hold on power. The reign of God is entirely different. As our King, Christ has rule over us. He became human so that we could experience God’s reign: Jesus had the power to forgive sinners, heal the sick, and even raise the dead, but without the trappings of power. All are free to accept Jesus Christ, or to turn away as Judas did. As Jesus hung on the cross, onlookers jeered at this “king” with no power to “save himself.” One of the crimi-nals crucified with him wanted only quick release from his agony; the other acknowledged the power of Jesus’ innocence and his future rule. In response to this total faith and trust, Jesus said, “[T]oday you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) No earthly ruler can promise so much. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. Escucha la Palabra (Lucas 23:25 — 43) Al escuchar esta conocida historia de Jesús en la cruz, ¿qué palabras o frases llaman su atención? En esta lectura, ¿qué les toca el corazón? ¿Qué imagen les impacta?

Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: Jesús siempre es bueno con los que lo aman. ¿Cómo muestran su amor por Jesús? Pregunta para los jóvenes: Esta semana celebramos a Cristo Rey. En el mejor sentido de la palabra, un Rey es alguien a quien le importa la gente que tiene bajo su cuidado, y también tiene autoridad sobre ellos. ¿Cuándo has sentido que eres importante para Jesús? ¿Cómo permites que Jesús tenga autoridad sobre ti? Pregunta para los adultos: A medida que piensan en Jesús en la cruz, en la compasión que tuvo por el “buen malhechor,” ¿qué lección sacan de esto para sus propias vidas? Listen to the Word (Luke 23:25 — 43) As you hear this familiar story of Jesus on the cross, what words or phrases catch your attention? In this reading, what touches your heart? What image strikes you?

Look into your life Question for children: Jesus is always kind to those who love him. How do you show your love for Jesus? Question for youth: This week we celebrate Christ the King. In the best sense of the word, a King is someone who cares for the people under his care, and also has authority over them. When have you felt Jesus’ care for you? How do you allow Jesus to have authority over you? Question for adults: As you think about Jesus on the cross, having compassion on the “good thief,” what lesson do you draw from it for your own life? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: We are children of God. If the Lord our God is King, and we are God’s children, then we must belong to a royal family. Make a crown out of construction paper for your table centerpiece. Every time a family member acts in a Christian way, have that person color a jewel on the crown. Hopefully by the end of the week, the crown will be filled with jewels of good acts. Pray the Lord’s Prayer together as a family. Place emphasis on the words “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Remind your family to be aware of God’s Reign in the world this week. The Church is called to be a sign of God’s Reign. Wherever there is violence, hatred, poverty and despair in the world, we are called to bring hope. Discuss with your family what each person is willing to do or willing to give up in order to help build the reign of God on earth, where you live. Pray the Doxology (the Glory Be) each evening as a prayer of praise for the kingdom of God.

From the Giving Tree of Needs to the Christmas Tree of Love It’s the beginning of our annual Christmas Giving Tree gift collection. For many years parishioners have been sharing God’s love by reaching out to our neigh-bors in need. Each ornament expresses a need of a child in our community.
