uSome postpone college, others compelled to transition to higher educationBy Times Editorial [email protected]; 810-433-6786  As they transition into college life and the adult world, some of our local high school graduates open up to share their high school experiences as well as what their future plans hold. 

KAITLYN OLDENBURGLinden grad  “If  I had a dollar  for every  time someone asked me about what I was doing after high school, I’d have a million dollars,” said Kaitlyn Oldenburg, 18,  senior  at  Linden High  School  who’s enjoying  her  first day off.   Instead of going to college right out of  high  school, Oldenburg is opt-ing for a more ad-venturous path.  “ I   s t a r t ed looking  at  col-leges and schol-arships and it just didn’t  feel  right. I  started  looking at  mission  trips.  I did two in Haiti and I  wanted  something longer,”  Oldenburg said.  She  came  across The  World  Race,  a  nine-month mission trip traveling to Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. She’ll spend three months on each continent and will find out which countries that she and dozens others will visit.   During those months, Oldenburg will be going to different homes, serving food, talking to people about God, playing with kids, and maybe teaching English in elementary school. 

Local graduates ready for next adventure  The trip costs around $12,000. Oldenburg has raised about $3,000 from support from family, friends and the community.   “Family and friends have donated, the community has donated. I’m having a garage sale and all the funds are going toward the trip, along with the money from my open house,” Oldenburg said.   Finishing high school was bittersweet, she said. “You leave all your friends behind and I’m literally leaving the country. It’s going to be a lot, doing the open house and graduating.” She was a flag girl in marching band. While in school, Olden-

burg went to Haiti twice on mission trips, once her sophomore year and again  this past 

spring break.  “It was eye-opening seeing a 

different culture besides Lin-den. Eye-opening and life-

changing,”  Oldenburg said.  After  her  nine-

month  mission  trip, Oldenburg plans on going to college to become a nurse.

gan University.  One  of  four  Salutatorians, 

Wiley is in good academic com-pany at FHS, with six Valedictorians 

leading the Top 10. “We have a very strong class, both academically and athletically,” said 

Wiley, the daughter of John and Diane Wiley of Fenton. She also has a sister, Erin, a sophomore at FHS.

Corinne Beemer GPA: 4.0

Corinne has balanced rigorous coursework, athletics, extra-curricular activities and commu-nity service throughout her high school career. With a 4.0 GPA, she has succeeded in challeng-ing courses, including IB English, IB Spanish, AP U.S. History, AP Govern-ment, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statis-tics. She is also involved athletically as a four-year tennis player. She is the recipient of a Scholar-Athlete award and has been named Athlete of the Week. In addition, she ran Varsity Cross Country and was a founding member of the Adrena-line Dance Team. Corinne is a two-year editor-in-chief and four-year staff member of the national award-winning Fentonian yearbook. Recently she was selected for the MIPA All-State Student Journal-ist Staff and was named All-MIPA as the Top Yearbook Student Jour-nalist in the state. Corinne demonstrated her dedi-cation to her school and community as Student Council All-School Vice President, National Honor Society Historian, and as NHS representative to the FAPS Education Foundation. Through volunteering she has shown her commitment to community involve-ment. This fall, Corinne will attend The University of Michigan College of Engineering where she will study Industrial Engineering and pursue a Spanish minor. She is the daughter of Brenda and Jerry Beemer.

Victoria ChapinGPA: 4.0

Victoria (Tori) has achieved the highest academic standing with a 4.0 GPA, while being a full IB Diploma student and also taking multiple AP courses. As well as focusing on academ-ics, Tori has participated in athletics, dance and community service. She excelled in Track and Field, earning four varsity letters while concentrat-ing on the pole vault, long jump and sprinting. She qualified for the indoor and outdoor state meets and was the 2013 field event MVP. In addition to 15 years of dance, Tori was a member of The Fenton Adrenaline dance team for the past three years. She also fulfilled active leadership roles in Student Council, National Honor Society and Cap-tains Club. She volun-teered on multiple mis-sion trips, including work-ing in a disadvantaged community in Tennessee and in an orphanage in Guatemala, to which she will return to this summer after graduation. In the fall, Tori will continue her studies at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, focusing on business with hopes to walk on to the track team to continue pole vaulting. She is the daughter of Phillip and Lisa Chapin.

Elizabeth CowgerGPA: 4.0

Elizabeth (Ellie) Cowger is a two-year co-editor-in-chief of the award-win-ning InPrint newspaper, recipient of several state and national journalism awards, and was named to the All-MIPA staff, which means she is rec-ognized as one of the top 15 student journalists in the state. Ellie is the reign-ing Miss Fenton, an active member of National Honor Society and four-year member of Student Council and currently holds the office of All-School President where she spearheaded the Join the Fight campaign. Ellie was named one of 32 top MHSAA Student-Athletes statewide, as well as being honored as Flint Area Kiwanis Athlete of the Month, qualifying her as a candidate for their Athlete of the Year award. She has earned 10 Varsity letters in Cross Country, Basketball and Soft-ball. She has been the recipient of All-League, All-District, All-Region and All-State Honor-able Mention honors. She has completed AP coursework and exams in Statistics, Government, Calculus, and U.S. History as well as independently studying Literature and Composition. Ellie has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for the University of Min-nesota and will pursue a degree in Supply Chain & Operations Management at their Carlson School of Management. She is the daughter of Dave and Annette Cowger.

Elizabeth DemingGPA: 4.0

Hard work and dedica-tion throughout high school have resulted in Elizabeth being named one of six valedictorians of the Class of 2014. With a 4.0 GPA, she has been actively involved in academics, athletics, the vocal music program, and National Honor So-ciety. During her time as a student, she excelled in classes such as AP Calculus AB and BC, IB Biology, IB Chemis-try, AP U.S. History, AP Government, IB English, and IB Spanish. She also juggled her academic course load with partici-pation in the Ambassa-dors. She was a member of the show choir during her junior and senior years, in which the group took home four gold awards at the National Heritage Festival Compe-tition. As an Ambassador, Elizabeth performed for the community through her ability to execute choreography, sing within a group, and perform alone during solos. She played for the school’s soccer team her fresh-man through junior years and played in a Premier League for LaForza. Next fall, Elizabeth will venture south to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. There she plans to study cell and mo-lecular biology in hopes of entering the medical field. Elizabeth’s parents are William and Penny Deming.

Amanda WestGPA: 4.0

Throughout her high school career, Amanda has dedicated herself to academics while partici-pating in athletics, clubs, and community service. With a 4.0 GPA, she has taken several AP and IB classes and this year is a second soprano in Bella Voce and a writer on the InPrint staff, continuing to try new things during her final year of high school. Amanda has contributed her time and talent to many com-munity service activities with the Key Club and the Fenton chapter of the National Honor Society. Her proudest academic achievements have been earning a 35 composite ACT score and be-ing named a National Merit Finalist. Amanda’s true passion, however, lies with travelling and learning abroad. In the summer before her junior year, she repre-sented Michigan and the United States in the Shiga, Japan Exchange Program, sponsored by Michigan State University. Because of this wonderful experience, Amanda also plans to study abroad in college. She is excited to attend the Univer-sity of Alabama Honors College on her National Merit Finalist scholarship. Amanda’s parents are Robert and Sue West.

Sara WujciakGPA: 4.0

Sara has balanced de-manding academic and extracurricular activities. She has maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.0 with IB, AP, and honors classes whenever pos-sible. She has taken IB Literature, IB History, IB Spanish, IB Econom-ics, IB Mathematics, IB Chemistry, IB Theory of Knowledge, AP Calculus, AP US History, and AP US Government. As an athlete, Sara participated throughout the year on the Flint Falcons National Swim Team, with whom she has placed in the top 25 percent at YMCA National Meets. As a sophomore, Sara placed seventh at the High School Girls’State Swim Meet, qualifying her as an Academic All-State Athlete. She is also a member and officer of the National Honor Society, student representative on the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foun-dation Board, and mem-ber of the Fenton United Methodist Church. She volunteers for Whaley’s Children Center, the Sal-vation Army, and United Way. Sara was a member of the Fenton High School Wind Ensemble. She has received superior ratings for piano performance in Student Achievement Testing for 10 consecutive years. In the fall, Sara will attend Johns Hopkins University as a student athlete to pursue a de-gree in engineering. Sara is the daughter of Dave and Diane Wujciak.

Gabrielle FarrenGPA: 3.996

Gabrielle’s dedication and hard work through-out high school resulted in her being named Salutatorian of the Class of 2014. With a 3.996 GPA, she shares this rank with three other academically focused individuals. Throughout her high school career, Gabrielle has excelled in academics as well as in all aspects of life. As a well-rounded individual, she was able to expand her horizons, enhance her knowledge, and further her experiences. In high school, she challenged herself academically by taking various IB and AP classes. With the help of the many clubs and orga-nizations that FHS offers, she was able to improve her leadership skills, as well as develop a sense of passion for helping others and the com-munity. She is involved in Key Club as President, National Honor Society, and Student Council. When she is not doing schoolwork or participat-ing in school-related ac-tivities, she plays soccer with the LaForza Soccer Club, participates in MMA at M.E.C.S, and volun-teers at the Lockwood of Fenton retirement home. In the fall, Gabrielle will attend Oakland University where she plans to study biomedical science. Her long-term goal is to become a pediatrician. She is the daughter of Tim and Kim Farren.

Erin O’HaraGPA: 3.996

Erin, one of four Saluta-torians of the Class of 2014, has maintained a high level of dedication to rigorous coursework to achieve academic success. With a 3.996 GPA, Erin successfully completed AP US History and AP Government, as well as honors literature and history classes. She has also excelled in the International Baccalaure-ate Diploma Program, with coursework including IB Chemistry, IB Biology, IB Mathematics, and IB English. Her commit-ment to these IB classes stems from her personal interest in the sciences and mathematics. Erin has taken her passion for learning to the commu-nity. Through a volunteer-ing component of the IB Diploma Program, she has fulfilled service hours promoting education. Her personal interests include reading, travelling, and spending time with her family and friends. Erin will be continuing her studies at Michigan State University next fall. She has earned an under-graduate research posi-tion and anticipates being a member of the Honors College. Her goal is to fulfill her interest in math and science and become a computer scientist. Erin is the daughter of Mike and Barb O’Hara.

Lauren RumblesGPA: 3.996

Lauren has challenged herself in academics and extracurricular activi-ties throughout her high school years. Some of her more rigorous aca-demic courses include AP U.S. History, AP Gov-ernment, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, IB English, IB Biology, IB History, and IB Spanish. Lauren is an avid community volun-teer, dedicating many hours to community service as Treasurer of the Fenton High School Chapter of the Na-tional Honor Society, as a member of Student Council, and through multiple mission trips with her church. She has been involved in the band program for the past four years, playing flute and piccolo in the symphonic band and wind ensem-ble, and participating as a squad and section leader for the Fenton Marching Tigers. Lauren also plays in the Fenton Community Orchestra. Work outside of school includes tutor-ing for all subjects and teaching flute lessons at A Joyful Noise in down-town Fenton. She will be attending Oakland Uni-versity in the fall, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sci-ence on the Presidential Scholarship. Caitlin has balanced high academic goals with athletic and leadership aspirations. With a 3.996 GPA, she has challenged herself academically by taking a number of higher-level courses such as AP U.S. History, AP Government, IB Biology, IB History, IB Literature, and IB Spanish. She is also an active musician in the high school band programs and a trumpet player in the Jazz Orches-tra. Athletically, Caitlin has been a four-year member of the Fenton-Linden Varsity Alpine Ski team, earning the honor of team captain as a senior. She advanced in three consecutive years to the state skiing finals, qualifying in the 2013-14 season as an individual. Caitlin received the Ki-wanis Club Student Ath-lete of the Month, State Bank Athlete of the Week, and Scholar Athlete awards. Caitlin is most proud of the leadership positions she has fulfilled in high school, including serving as National Honor Society President, Presi-dent of the Class of 2014, Drum Major of the Fenton Marching Tigers, and Student Representative to the Board of Educa-tion. She also enjoys reading, playing ultimate Frisbee, and skiing recreationally in her spare time. GRADUATESContinued from Page 3  While  Wiley  emphasized academics,  completing  her high  school  career  with  a 3.996  grade  point  average, she allowed herself to expe-rience a full range of activi-ties — from drum major in the  FHS  Marching  Band to  National  Honor  Society president and captain of the Girls’ Ski Team. “I’ve tried to push myself with leader-ship activities,” she said.  She  also  likes  to  have fun.  Many  times,  she’ll  be out  with  friends  playing Alternate  Frisbee,  a  cross between football and soccer. In the winter, you’ll find her skiing most weekends at Boyne Highlands, where her father is a member of the ski patrol. She also loves to travel, and plans to create a lifestyle for herself that will allow that for her in the future, putting China, Hong Kong, Germany and South America on her “bucket list.”  Wiley plans  to major  in political science at WMU, and hopes  to  continue  her  education  by  attending  law  school. “I’m definitely interested in politics, but I’m leaving myself open for changing my mind once I get to college,” she said.

  While  she  looks  to  her future with optimism, Wiley prefers  to  experience  the present as fully as possible, appreciating  her  family, friends  and  teachers  who have  taught  her  so  much about life. “You only gradu-ate from high school once,” she said. “I plan to take it all in and enjoy it.”

CAMERON WALKERLake Fenton grad  As  salutatorian  of  his graduating  class,  Cameron Walker,  17,  has  to  give  a speech  at  graduation.  He pondered whether the speech should be serious.

  “This  is  going  to  be  the  last  time  I  address  my  class,” Walker said. “I can’t be serious.” His class at Lake Fenton High School is small enough that he’ll know everyone he’s addressing.  “I loved high school. You hear about the people who are like ‘I can’t wait to be done’ but I’ve always loved Lake Fenton,” Walker said. “It’s always felt like a family to me.” Walker’s mother, two of his uncles and one of his aunts also attended Lake Fenton. His favorite class was government, which fits what he’s going to college for — political science and pre-law.   In  fall  of  2014,  Walker  will  start  his  freshman  year  at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois, major-ing in political science and double minoring in French and legal studies. “I’m just really looking forward to becoming more independent and learning stuff that’s important to me. If you’re going to do good, now’s the time,” Walker said,   Walker  plans  to  become  a  constitutional  attorney  or  a criminal  prosecutor  after  college,  hopefully  in  Washington D.C. The decision to become a lawyer was easy.   “A big thing for me when I knew I needed to become a law-yer, was watching my friend’s sister get sworn in to become an attorney,” Walker said. His driven nature helped him keep up his 3.992 GPA in high school.  “I remember sitting up in my room at two in the morning, just  staring at papers.  I never got discouraged. School was my job. It never occurred to me to not study,” Walker said, a recipient of a scholarship from the Genesee County Association of School Board Members, “It was hard, but I was driven.”

SENIORSContinued from Page 8  Along with school, he was involved in marching band from eighth- to 12th-grade, playing the tenor saxophone and acting as drum major his junior and senior year. Walker was involved in National Honor Society, Key Club, his church youth group, and has coordinated his school’s American Red Cross Blood Drive.   Before going to college, Walker plans on going to Guatemala for a week this summer to work in an orphanage. “It’ll be cool to be a part of a different culture and something bigger than me,” Walker said.

‘‘ ’’Nadine Bahlqe - Lake Fenton grad  Many people have plans to travel after they finish school. However, Nadine Bahlqe, 17, is graduating from Lake Fenton High School this spring and has already been to Spain, Italy, France, London, China, South Korea, India, Japan, Singapore, Germany, and Paris.   “I definitely enjoyed high school. People say it’s the ‘best four years of your life’ but it’s really not. It was fun,” Bahlqe said. She will attend Florida State University going into the medical field to become at Veterinarian.   Bahlqe chose Florida State University because it’s “basically Michigan State but with better weather.” People were friendly when she visited back in November, she said. After college and graduate school, Bahlqe wants to settle down south, mainly because of the weather.  “Hopefully, if everything goes right, I want to open my own veterinarian practice in Georgia,” Bahlqe said.   Bahlqe has also been to school in Japan, where she attended an international school for first- through third-grade. The big-gest cultural difference was  the attendance policy. Bahlqe’s school in Japan didn’t enforce attendance because they wanted to encourage kids to travel.   Bahlqe’s family is originally from Germany and she goes to visit every year. The main cultural difference between Germany and the U.S. is “things that are insulting here would be normal there,” Bahlqe said. She didn’t like Paris because the people were rude and it was dirty, but she loved Spain.  Traveling has made her more open-minded than her peers. “They don’t want  to go see Asia and  I  think  that’s weird,” Bahlqe said, adding that she’ll miss high school for “the first two weeks of college, but not really.”
