I make it a point to return to my favorite roadside attraction desti- nations at least once every three years. Some of them change, and some of them never change. The only thing that makes me sad are the ones that go away like Prehistoric Forest in Irish Hills and Deer Acres in Pinconning (which has been slated for reopening for about three years now). As a self-proclaimed ‘tourist trap addict,’ I feel I should share with you my top choices for Michigan’s odd attractions. Dinosaur Gardens This prehistoric zoo is located at 11160 US Highway 23 S, in Ossineke. Enjoy a walk through the woods where there are giant monstrous di- nosaur replicas, and many mosquitoes. The earliest photo I have found of this awesome destination was when I was about 5 years old probably the first time I went there. ROBERT KRUG,FENTON TOWNSHIP CLERK

CITY OF LINDENNOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED

IMPROVEMENTS TO BYRAM LAKE

The Linden City Council will hold a public hearing in the Council Chambers on the lower level of the Mill Building at 201 N. Main Street, Linden, Michigan on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. to hear citizen’s comments on continuation of the Byram Lake Improvement Project. The project will be financed by a special assess-ment district which includes all properties in the city within 500 feet of Byram Lake which abut the lake. A copy of plans and cost estimates for the project are on file with the City Clerk.

The current aquatic plant control program on Byram Lake is scheduled to end this year. It is proposed to continue the project through 2019 with a combination of herbicide treatments, mechanical harvesting for aquatic plant control and contin-ued water quality monitoring to gauge the effectiveness of the project. Estimated project costs for the proposed project 2015 through 2019 are:

Improvement CostAquatic Plant Control (Herbicide Treatments/Mechanical Harvesting) $27,000 Aquatic Plant Control Coordination/Field Evaluations 6,000Water Quality Monitoring 4,000Administration and Contingency 3,000Total $40,000

In order to ensure assessments levied are proportionate to the benefit derived from the project, it is proposed that lot size be considered when determining individual assessments. Under this plan, a “unit” assessment would be levied against lots with a mean lot width of 300 feet or less. Lots greater than 300 feet in width would be assessed two units in the proposed Byram Lake special assessment district. This equates to a unit assessment of $264.90 per year for 5 years.

Any person wishing to comment may do so in person or in writing by addressing written comments to Lynn M. Henry, City Clerk, at P.O. Box 507, 132 E. Broad Street, Linden, Michigan, 48451.

DEAR AMY: There is a teacher at the local high school who I see at many social, school and sport events. She is always telling stories about the students at the school to anyone who will listen. These stories are highly confidential in nature, such as a young adult who was hospitalized for depression and a suicide attempt, a child who has anorexia and an anxiety disorder, parents who are going through a nasty divorce, etc. I have both pulled her aside and also said in front of the entire group that she is gossiping and that I think she should stop sharing this information, but she does not stop. She once said that she would not use the child’s name, but it is obvious who the child/family is by the details of the stories. How can I get her to stop? Should I tell her supervisor or the principal? I do not want these early episodes and mistakes to follow them through life. — Concerned Parent

DEAR PARENT: When a teacher disrespects students through gossip, it turns the teacher into the very thing she criticizes: an immature, misbehaving, attention-hogging teenager. You have tried and obviously cannot get this teacher to stop gossiping. The only course of action left to you is to contact the principal and possibly the superintendent of the school. If this teacher is violating official privacy guidelines, then she should get into trouble.

DEAR AMY: Our sixth-grade daughter, ‘Anna,’ has a school friend ‘Krista,’ who she really connects with, but Krista’s mother is a

nightmare. She intrudes herself uninvited, behaves badly and is overall inappropriate. Anna and I recently witnessed her yanking Krista around by the hair while insulting her. Privately I told her how uncomfortable what she did to her daughter made us, hoping to advocate for the child. Her response to my admittedly intrusive critique of her parenting was predictably awful, and she told Krista that I think

she is a lousy mother. Krista is welcome in our home, but I will not allow Anna to return the visits, nor does she want to. Is there a good way to allow Krista to visit my daughter in our home but not in hers? We have been able to find excuses so far, but what do I tell a 12-year-old? — Challenged

DEAR CHALLENGED: This mother already knows you disapprove of her parenting because you were brave enough to be honest with her. She has told her daughter that you think she’s a lousy parent — and so it is out there. Explain to ‘Krista,’ ‘I’ve talked with Anna about this and I don’t feel comfortable sending her to your house right now. But we always love having you here and would like you to be with us whenever you want.’ You don’t need to supply reasons, but let the girl know that the directive comes from you.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several of the sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t

complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. — R.M.

ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room.
