You are old as you feel! “How old are you?” It is the question polite people won’t ask. But does it really matter, for isn’t it just a num-ber? Some say, “you are as old as you feel.” Depending on the time of day and what I have done that day, how I feel can change without notice. That clock keeps ticking and time passes, a second at time. God blesses us with time, how much we never really know. Next week, my brother and I will be celebrating sixty-six years of life. Although many years have passed since our childhood, we are going next week to spend a day at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I doubt I will be able to get my brother Dan to put on the “ Mickey Mouse ears” even for a photo op. As kids we were regulars at watching “The Mickey Mouse Club on TV and thought of ourselves as honorary “Mouseketteers.” This moment of reminiscing has been instigated by my brother and I participating in a “Min-nesota Twins Study.” After first completing a four hour on-line survey, I finished the process with a five hour personal interview yesterday. I then inquired what was the focus of the study only to learn it dealt with “aging” twins aged sixty to eighty-five years old. I now feel much older than before. Many of the questions had to do with our upbringing and parental experiences. As we get older maybe we forget some of those experiences and aren’t aware of how much they influence the way we live our lives now. None of the questions dealt with a religious influence which I made certain was included in my answers. The Catholic Faith was very important in our house and our upbringing. In fact, my dad built the house we still have today because it was near a Church. As I look out over our congregation and see families attending Mass together, I am reminded how important that is to a family. I watch and notice how families age together and appreciate when “the kids” come home for a visit and all return to the Church together where they grew and matured. When I visit homes and see photos on the wall of weddings, many of which it is obvious occurred in our church, I feel the connection of the history of this fam-ily with the parish to which they belong. If it is true that we are as old as we feel, then let all of us feel a profound sense of gratitude for what we have been given throughout this life. Our Church is one of our greatest gifts. As we age, our gratitude shouldn’t fade, but only grow stronger for we should have discovered just how much and how important our upbringing has been to us in shaping us into the person we are today. It shouldn’t take a survey or study to make us realize that. I wouldn’t recommend you spend much time imagin-ing what your pastor and his twin brother would look like wearing Mickey Mouse ears strolling down Main Street in Disney World. It would be better time spent reflecting with gratitude on your own history, memories and upbringing and with gratitude know that being as “old as you feel” isn’t a problem but a gift of the time that God has given to each of us, simply because He loves us.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Today’s Gospel reading recounts Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multitude. In a miracle that anticipated Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multitude, as reported in today’s Gospel, Elisha commanded that a small amount of bread be served to 100 men, and Jesus promised that all would indeed be fed. Elisha trusted that promise, acted upon it, and saw the promise mi-raculously fulfilled. We, like most people, tend to forget the miracles our Lord can work in everyday life. If we trust in God and live as good stewards, what we accomplish is, in its own way, a miracle. St. Paul beautifully sums up how our approach to living as Catholics and Christians should be. In today’s Second Reading from his letter to the Ephesians, Paul urges us to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit.” Does that describe our parish community? This cannot happen unless we have the same kind of trust that Elisha had, and which St. Paul had, as well. Paul also says in today’s Second Reading, “I urge you to live in a man-ner worthy of the call you have received.” This is stewardship

Reading II : Ephesians 4:1-6Bear with one another lovingly.• The unity given to Christians through one Baptism in Christ is

the subject of today’s passage from the Letter to the Ephesians.• Christians are one Body in Christ.• This unity is exemplified by Christians living in peace.

Gospel : John 6:1-15Jesus gave the people all the food they wanted.• The miraculous feeding in today’s Gospel provides a glimpse of

the heavenly banquet, where there will never be hunger again.• The early Christians recognized in this miracle that hunger for

life is the hunger that Jesus satisfies.• This story of the multiplication of the loaves becomes the symbol

for Jesus’ Eucharistic feeding of his disciples through the ages.

at its core. We should not give of our time, talent and treasure because we want to earn God’s love. He already loves us unconditionally. Jesus knew full well what miracle He was about to perform, but He also saw this as a chance to teach His Apostles, and also show us the way. Philip and the others had already seen Jesus perform many miracles, and there should have been no question in his mind about the divine resources Jesus had at His disposal. Yet Philip hesitated. It is human nature to be doubtful. Yet, as with Elisha, they all ate, and there was much left over. Through this miracle, Jesus is teaching us to trust Him and to do the same in our lives. And, by committing ourselves to a stewardship way of life, we can see our own gifts multiplied. And perhaps even perform our own modern-day miracles.
