January is the Month of the Most Holy Name of Jesus!

Feast day ~ January 3 St. Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians, At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth (2:10). Christians have always believed that the name of Jesus is a powerful one, but many are not familiar with the meaning behind it. What does the name mean? Where did it come from? First of all, the name Jesus is one that was divinely given through the angelic message of Gabriel to Mary: Be-hold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus (Luke 1:31). Out of all the names he could have chosen, God chose that name for a reason. The Catholic Encyclopedia states, The word Jesus is the Latin form of the Greek Iesous, which in turn is the transliteration of the Hebrew Jeshua, or Joshua, or again Jehoshua, meaning [God] is salvation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church adds, Jesus means in Hebrew: God saves. At the annunciation, the an-gel Gabriel gave him the name Jesus as his proper name, which expresses both his identity and his mission. The name was a popular one in the Old Testament and during the time of Jesus birth. It is closely related to the name Joshua. For this reason the Old Testament figure of Joshua is often seen as a prefigurement of Jesus, who now leads the people of God into the true Promised Land. According to some ancient sources, The Greek name is connected with verb iasthai, to heal; it is therefore, not sur-prising that some of the Greek Fathers allied the word Jesus with same root. In the end, it is a powerful name, one that summarizes who Jesus was and what he came to do on earth. The name Jesus signifies that the very name of God is present in the person of his Son, made man for the universal and definitive redemption from sins. It is the divine name that alone brings salvation, and henceforth all can invoke his name, for Jesus united himself to all men through his Incarnation, so that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (CCC 432).

Help is needed forThe Carmelite Monastery in Hague The Carmelite Monastery has received a donation of two mobile homes which they would like to furnish in order to be able to receive novices this summer and also to ac-commodate their chaplain on the property in case of severe winter weather. The one home would also serve as a guest house for when their families or prospective candidates wish to visit. If you would like to be a part of this housewarming project, the Sisters have set up an on-line registry at Kohls. Enter the word Mother in the search box. Schreiners Hardware in Strasburg also has a list of items needed that can be purchsed there. Other items which could be purchased locally include: an atomic wall clock, 2 rolls shelving paper, 2 rolls of opaque contact paper, 2 waste paper baskets, 2 sets of stove top drip pans (3 small and 1 large pans in each set), and one shower curtain. Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

CHURCH DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! They are available to pick up at St. Anthony Church for those who had their picture included in the directory. St. Anthony KC Family Christmas Party

Little piano players are needed for dinner music such as those who have learned solo pieces for Christmas recitals. We will plan to eat while the food is hot then players play as we finish eating. Santa will make a stop in between entertainers. A kid-die craft table will also be available for the little ones.

The 34th World Youth Day (WYD) will take place in Panama City, Panama, Jan. 2227, 2019. The event will be hosted during the winter to avoid the countrys rainy sea-son, which occurs in July and August the traditional dates for WYD. The dioceses Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries will be coordinating a trip. Due to the timing of WYD 2019, the trip will only be offered to those who are 18 or older, so as not to compete with school-sponsored March for Life events, and other activities happening during this same time. Early registra-tion has already begun. Deadline to register is March 30, 2018. For more information go to www.bismarckdiocese.com/wyd.
