Letter from Our CEODear, Members, Donors, Friends and Family,

Asour95yearcelebrationnears,Iamfilledwith pride to be among the women who came before me in leading the YWCA. These women deleted the word “failure” from their vocabular-ies. In 1950 Mrs. E. Blood lamented “Yesterday, today and tomorrow; the needs of women and children are the same. Housing, jobs, education for living, recreation, companionship, guidance and hope, the tune is forever the same.” Her quote still rings true for women and children in

the Green Bay area community.

Today, collaboration on social issues related to women and girls is how we will continue advancing the mission of the YWCA Green Bay - De Pere. In September of 2014 the YWCA opened the American Foods, Women’s Economic Empowerment Center. The YWCA in collaboration with Literacy Green Bay and NWTC provide GED classes for adults with children. We are the only program providing on-site licensed childcare along with learning and development opportunities for enrollees wanting their GED. The YWCA provides a safe environment and care for their chil-dren. To date we have served 79 adults, 102 children and 13 have gradu-ated from the program.

Our Tech GYRLS program now starting its 5th year has served over 400 young girls in 13 schools. Introducing girls to STEM curriculum at anearlyagehasprovenaneffectivetool,influencingwomentoconsidercareers that have been traditionally held by males. Through the generous donations to this program we have invested in the curriculum and grown from 4 modules offered in 2011 to 12 currently offered. These include;

CSI:TechGYRLS:Investigatetheworldofcriminalinvestigation.Takefingerprints, make molds, and analyze DNA like a real forensic scientist. Robo Mania: Bring your own robot to life in this interactive exploration of robotics. Build an alligator, marble shooter, or robo-man with LEGOs. Program your creation with computer technology and watch it perform various tasks.

Swimming has been part of the YWCA for 95 years. Did you know that learning to swim became part of the civil rights movement for women? In1904aboatcaughtfireinNewYork’sEastRiver.Nearly1000womenand children died 50 yards from shore. Most could not swim and the weight oftheirclothesmadeswimmingdifficult.Thisincidentunderscoredtheneed and right for self-preservation. The YWCA continues teaching water safety and swimming lessons to young children. In 2013 we provided 1650 swimming lessons to children that otherwise would not know how to swim.

The strength and leadership of the YWCA continue’s today because of you.

“YWCA CEO awarded for efforts”

GREEN BAY - Kathy Hinkfuss, the CEO of the YWCA of Green Bay - De Pere, was presented last month with the 2014 Dreamers and Doers Award by the American Association of University Women. The award recognizes women whose achievements, leadership and talents effect change, inspire and enrich life in this community.

As the leader of the largest and old-est women’s agency in Green Bay since 2011, Hinkfuss has demon-strated an ability to inspire others to be leaders. For example, with the initial donation of 60 new prom dresses, she challenged her team to hold a special prom event at the YWCA for low-income high school girls, according to the nomination. More than 200 girls - who may have younger siblings to look after, may not have a bed to sleep in, or never have the chance to shop for new clothes - were treated to an enchant-ing evening every young women de-serves.

Eight women were nominated for the 2014 Dreamers and Doers Award. They included Leah Abraham, Julie Arneth, Kathy Hassleblad-Pascale, Pat Hinckley, Molly Johnson, Toni Loch, and Engrid (Inky) Meng.

Judy and Ruth met in class at the YWCA and have been friends ever since. They both are dedicated to working out every week. And even though Ruth is 93 years old and can no longer drive, Judy picks Ruth up and they attend class together. The constant encouragement and support they display is heartwarm-ing and so special. Ruth has been a YWCA member for 40 years and stated, “I love the YWCA because there are nice people, I enjoy social-izing, and I benefit from the exer-cise.” The multiple facets of the mis-sion of the YWCA Green Bay – De Pere is truly embodied in this pair.

Empowering Women

Maddie, a single mother of two children in her twenties, was referred to and joined Journey to Sustainable Living (JSL). She was unemployed and very excited to be in the program, but within two days of joining crisis hit, spinning her world out of control. Maddie was put in a place of chaos without familial support and no one to turn to.

JSL is a program in The Empower-ment Center at the YWCA, and once Maddie connected with the the pro-gram, she knew she’d have people to lean on. JSL counselors were con-sistently connecting via phone, pro-viding encouragement and assuring her she could always return back to a safe place of comfort. Maddie re-turned a few days later to the YWCA ready to learn key life skills that many take for granted. In the following days working with the Mentor Sys-tem, JSL, and the Women’s Closet through the Empowerment Cen-ter Maddie learned communication skills, how to dress for success, how beliefs and attitude affect de-cisions, and how to move forward during a crisis; all allowing her to build confidence needed to ac-complish her goals. Within one week Maddie celebrated that she got her first interview with Panera.

With this news, all the JSL partici-pants cheered her on, allowing her confidence to emerge and shine for everyone to see. The YWCA made arrangements to have two women in the Closet be personal shoppers with her during closed hours so she had time to try on the perfect inter-view outfit. Time was spent with the group on mock interviews as well as personal one-on-one time with Maddie so she could get in as

much practice before her interview.

Maddie came in the next day look-ing beautifully dressed in her new clothes and newfound confidence. She had received a second inter-view. We further coached her and the group in how to do research on companies of interest and she left knowledgeable about Panera and ready to be great in the next interview.

Maddie continued to learn stress management, financial education, and goal setting. The first step to Maddie’s goal fulfillment was to have a home for her and her children by finding employment, and she achieved that goal in only three short weeks! We celebrated with her and reminded her that her career is only beginning to grow. We could see on her face that she truly believed the sky was her limit. That look is what makes The Empowerment Center so powerful and rewarding.

Celebrating the development and success of all women in our community is the passion that has driven this organization for the past 95 years and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Finding Success in the Journey to Sustainable

Living ProgramThe Women’s Empowerment Cen-ter empowers women of all eco-nomic backgrounds to find suitable employment to succeed and thrive in the workplace. We empower women through services includ-ing technical training, computer literacy, financial understanding, resume development, interviewing skills, counseling and mental health services, and provide professional attire. By partnering with local agencies, the YWCA helps women navigate the maze of opportunities available in our community, while supporting their goals, dreams and abilities. TechGYRLS Stimulates Interest + Opens

WindowsThere are many barriers standing between young girls and careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). Varying from tra-ditions of it being a generally male-populated sector and the constraints that come with breaking that mold.

TechGYRLS serves as a step-ping-stone for young girls rang-ing from 3rd to 8th grade, spark-ing interest in STEM fields and giving them the tools to succeed.

According to the Afterschool Alliance, “Nearly 80% of future careers will require some STEM skills. A stimu-lating STEM education is essential for developing the basic analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills central to academic achieve-ment and workforce readiness in the 21st century.” TechGYRLS is a grass-roots program addressing these immediate needs in our commu-nity. This initiative promotes healthy self-esteem, awareness of STEM majors and careers, and increases life skills needed to be successful within the workforce. The program strives to fulfill these goals through hands-on projects designed to peak girls’ interests within STEM fields. The program also helps to decrease the widening gap between men and women pursuing STEM careers.

This year, girls were able to ex-plore STEM by building cars pow-ered by different materials such as a propeller, mouse trap, and a balloon, learn about the proper-ties of water, experience circuits and robotics, and work as a foren-sic scientist in a CSI crime scene.

“This experience,” Nalee 3rd grad-er at Jefferson Elementary says, “has helped me learn about dif-ferent jobs. I like the projects

and making blood and DNA.”

TechGYRLS is a camp that is hosted at the YWCA as well as a program

that we bring to local schools to work with girls. It has expanded its ser-vices from the middle school range to elementary, beginning STEM con-versations at an earlier age where intellectual growth is beginning and girls are developing their interests. The program has a 92% comple-tion rate with over 75% of its par-ticipants utilizing scholarship ser-vices available to low-income girls. Overall, the program reaches girls by providing them with knowledge that is useful for their future suc-cess in a fun atmosphere to peak their interest and allow them to see a possible future in a field where they have typically been told they don’t belong. The program is meet-ing real needs and works towards supporting the youth within the com-munity to create social change.

Since TechGYRLS’ establishment in 2010 here at the YWCA Green Bay – De Pere, the program has served 478 girls and thus worked to close the gender gap within our commu-nity. We hope that this program, as well as the confidence it provides young girls, only blossoms until a specialized program like this isn’t unique and necessary, but inher-ent in all schools and communities.

AmeriCorps Vistas join our team

AmeriCorps engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and com-munity and faith-based groups across the country. AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Individuals make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, adminis-trative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster eco-nomic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities.

“Without the mentors I had growing up I would not have found my love for science, and I believe that every-one should have the opportunity to learn and explore in order to find their passions... which is how I found TechGYRLS!”

“I am very excited to be working with TechGYRLS for the year. It is a fan-tastic program and I look forward to seeing it grow!”

Help YWCA Green Bay – De Pere Recruit 95 New Women of Vision Donors!

To honor and help move our work forward, YWCA Green Bay – De Pere has developed the goal to recruit 95 new Women of Vision members. They turn that passion into a financial com-mitment to move the YWCA’s work in a positive direction by donation at least $125 a year to the YWCA. This year marks our 95th year of service to greater Green Bay. We have lowered the financial com-mitment to be a part of this giving group for the remainder of 2014. With a financial gift of $95, you can help us achieve our goal of gaining 95 new Women of Vision members and creating a positive difference in our community. Your gift of $95 can provide• A science kit for a low-income

Health & Fitness

Maggie Lee joined the YWCA Encore program because she was not feeling great about herself and needed some positive change in her life. She could have never imagined after just one week of join-ing the YWCA how happy she would be. Maggie explained, “I love com-ing to the YWCA because people are not judgmental; it’s very relax-ing, and people are very friendly. I can freely be myself here.” Maggie is a breast cancer survivor, and she is working on finding her ‘new normal.’

Ellen DeKeyser, ENCORE Program Coordinator, explained that many times cancer survivors have an overwhelming sense of loss. Women lose con-fidence, body parts, security, and self-esteem. The program is designed to help cancer survivors take back control and find their ‘new normal.’

Maggie has found comfort in meeting and relating to women who have gone through similar experiences. She described that friends and family can try to understand what a cancer patient goes through, but unless you have had cancer no one can truly understand. The Encore ladies have a sisterhood, and they support each other through their experiences and the knowledge they have gained from them. Maggie recently met a woman in the program, who is a 33-year cancer survivor, and it gives her hope that she will be there too. Maggie enjoys the land and water class, as well as the fitness center. She is looking forward to her future at the YWCA, and she explains that coming to the YWCA “is going to be a positive change in my life. I want to be better, and coming here just puts a smile on my face.” Welcome Maggie! We’re so happy to have you join our family.

A group of women here at the YWCA have been dedicated mem-bers for years. They participate in a water aerobics class twice week-ly, and after class they have cof-fee in the on-site Konop Lounge. They have become a family and a great inspiration to everyone here; they have supported one anoth-er through the good and the bad. Their bond is visible. Lucy has been a member for 14 years, and she said “I love the YWCA, I love ex-ercising, visiting and chatting. We are a very caring group.” Alma, 91, has been a member for 23 years and said the YWCA and the wom-en keep her young. The YWCA is not just a fitness center for them; it is a community where every-one is welcome. They keep each other coming back every week.

Kate always considered herself to be reasonably fit, even though she did little to no exercise. She ate what she wanted without having to worry about gaining weight, but that changed three years ago when Kate was un-der a lot of stress. She started to choose unhealthy food, and her portions grew too big for her body to burn. In March 2013, Kate looked in the mir-ror and was forced to face the reality that she was overweight and out of shape. She did not like the way she looked or felt, so she joined the YWCA.

Kate barely finished her first fitness class, but that did not discourage her. She was determined to get healthy and become a more confident woman. She took things slow and did a combination of weight training, cardio, and land classes. Eventually, she started to feel better and increased her endurance and strength training to start losing weight. In June 2013, Kate ran her first mile. Every week she challenged herself to run further and in September, she ran a 10-mile race.

By March 2014, she had lost 40 pounds and celebrated her yearlong fit-ness journey. Kate explained, “joining the YWCA was the best thing I could have done. The staff is outstanding, knowledgeable, and sup-portive.” She recognizes staying fit and healthy is a day-to-day pro-cess, and Kate is truly happy about this life changing experience. We’re so proud of you for taking your life into your own hands, Kate.

ChildcareLaForce Egg Hunt

“Today we are going to have an egg hunt,” an After School Teacher said calmly, knowing the storm about to erupt…and sure enough “An EGG HUNT!!” a group of 25 young kids all practically screamed out in anticipa-tion of the mini-adventure they were about to embark on. As a teacher, it is always a wonder to see the volcanic excitement of kids when they have an opportunity to experience something different than the everyday.

The YWCA After School Program was the proud participant of an egg hunt set up by LaForce employees. Individuals from La-Force came to the YWCA, hiding many dif-ferent colorful eggs for our kids to find. Be-fore the hunt began, two employees had supplies all ready for the kids to turn on their creativity as they decorated and made their own craft to take home; a windsock.

While some kids wanted to finish their windsock in record speeds in or-der to fly it around, others took their

time in embellishments. The room was soon full of little hands waving around paper and streamers, each wanting to show off their own wind-sock to their friends, comparing colors picked out for their fabulous tails.

Next up, the kids were ushered outside to where their adventure began. Each child was allowed to find ten eggs each. As a teacher you always wor-ry about the thankfulness of the children, but I had nothing to worry about as all of them screamed again in excitement “We get TEN eggs! Did you hear that? We get TEN!” And when the volunteers said the okay, off went 50 spindly legs, to search around the grassy park on a nice, calm, spring day.

The older kids found their ten with the gusto and wisdom that older kids have grown into after past years of hide-and-seek games. Then those older kids became good Samaritans, helping their younger friends find their own ten. They would run with beaming faces to show their eggs. The volunteers were able to help the kids count their eggs, and made sure each got their fair share.

We all said our big thank yous as the egg hunt came to a close, and the rush of excitement continued, as the kids were able to fully rel-ish the contents of their eggs. Afterwards, the kids made comments such as “I liked the egg hunt a lot.” “I liked the part where we got to find the eggs.” And “It was really fun.” Which is big praise in kid language!

The day was one where a memory was made, kids of different ages, and different backgrounds, each able to share in the wonder of hunting for something not easily seen. It gave the kids opportunity to work together, to be thankful for what they found, and to enjoy the spoils of a good plunder. We are all very thankful for volunteers who provide such opportunities for these memories to be built!

Summer 2014

YWCA turns 95!For 95 years, women of all ages and backgrounds have walked through the doors of the YWCA seeking help or giving help to others. Ninety fi ve years of women have left an impact on the lives of women and families in greater Green Bay and throughout Brown County with their generous acts of the heart. The leadership of these community women lives in the legacy of the YWCA today. It’s time to honor the YWCA’s 95 years of progressive work.

Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D., is the CEO of the YWCA USA, leading one of the nation’s oldest and largest multicultural organizations promoting solutions to enhance the lives of women, girls, and their families. Dara has more than 20 years of leader-ship and management experience in the healthcare, corporate, and non-profi t sectors. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards. In May 2013, she was named one of the “21 Lead-ers for the 21st Century” by Women’s eNews and in August 2013, she was included on The Nonprofi t Times “Power & Infl uence Top 50” list.

As our keynote speaker, she will focus on how individuals and organizations can amplify women’s leadership. Through the lens of the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, Dara will illuminate how living this mission strengthens women and men as we work together for an equitable society. She will also share lessons learned during her more than 20 years as a leader and manager in businesses and non-profi t organizations. Throuh her story, you will discover how Dara ad-dresses barriers she faces as a woman and woman of color in leadership, gaining lessons to ap-ply in your own life. This address will inspire you with action steps to put your leadership into action.
