Welcome to the Oswego Chamber of Commerce Community Guide and Membership Directory. Oswego is a town with a wide variety of businesses, many nonprofit groups and many things to do. We have great businesses in our Historic Downtown and along our Route 34, Route 71 and Orchard Road corridors. The Chamber

works throughout the year to help promote both the profit and nonprofit members of our organization through networking events, a Business and Consumer Expo, community events, social media and this guide.

The Chamber is fortunate to have seven Platinum Elite Members, one Gold Elite Member and four Bronze Elite Members. These are members that have made a greater investment in the Chamber and a higher commitment to the Oswego business community which contributes to our success. 461 INSPIRING MEMBERS – ONE AMAZING YEARWhen it comes to success, it’s all about fostering positive

working relationships. Those relationships are the driving force in Oswego, a community poised for ongoing growth and well-suited for business success.

“Partnership, collaboration and communication are our true keys to success when it comes to Oswego’s economic development,” says Angie Hibben, President and Chief Executive Officer of the vibrant and active 461-member Oswego Chamber of Commerce.

Located in far west suburban Kendall County, Oswego and the surrounding communities are fast becoming an employment hub for manufacturing, engineering, and companies representing multiple market sectors. As the largest community in rapidly growing Kendall County and with more than 32,000 residents, Oswego is home to a growing number of retailers, big box stores, restaurants, service providers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.

“It’s a close working relationship between the Chamber and the Village, ongoing communication and dialogue regarding businesses already in the community and those just arriving in the community which makes our partnership unique,” explains Hibben. She says Oswego’s pro-business atmosphere, low cost of living, family-friendly amenities, well-educated workforce, top-tier academic and technical institutions which provide training for a skilled labor force, modern infrastructure, national highway system and ideal location with proximity to air traffic hubs at O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport make Oswego a top choice for business and industry.

A growing community, Oswego’s population is expected to reach 40,000 by 2025. Residents enjoy the country charm of a small rural town while having the opportunity to experience easy access to surrounding suburban and Chicago amenities.

Located just 50 miles southwest of Chicago’s Loop, Oswego covers 14.56 square miles and is ideally situated in the northeast section of Kendall County and at the border of three collar counties. The four county area is widely recognized as one of the most rapidly growing regions in Illinois and the Midwest.

52 NEW BUSINESSES – ONE AMAZING YEARThe Oswego community welcomed a variety of new

businesses in 2014 including Hobby Lobby, Pier 1 Imports, Jimmy John’s, and Off The Orchard. Hobby Lobby has created and retained 35 jobs and is projected to hire more in 2015.

According to the Village of Oswego Economic Development staff, multiple retailers currently are looking at the remaining space in the Hobby Lobby building. The planned strip center at the old Dominick’s gas station also has received several pre-lease commitments from retailers.

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria has signed a lease at 2840-2848 Route 34 for the west endcap, formerly occupied by relocated Verizon, Inc., bringing the nearly 50 percent vacant strip center to full occupancy.

Oswego’s retail market continues to be strong with a vacancy rate of just 5.1 percent.

“This is good news and the first time the retail vacancy rate dropped close to 5 percent since late 2011, when Lowe’s closed, posing a challenge to the community,” says Vijay Gadde, Economic Development director, who reports that absorption of space (square footage occupied less square foot vacated over a given period of time) totaled more than 150,000 square feet in 2014, the largest absorption of space since 2008.

The industrial and flex space vacancy rate stood at a tight 4.4 percent.

The Village of Oswego Economic Development department works to retain and expand existing businesses, and attract targeted retail and commercial business to locate within the Village, collaborating with the Oswego Chamber of Commerce on several fronts including business visits and small business seminars.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT HIGHLIGHTS ● Oswego ranked third in NerdWallet’s Best Cities for

Homeownership in Illinois in 2014.The Village received high marks in analyses of local homeownership and employment opportunities by NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy and financial literacy website.

● A total of 190 new housing units started by the end of fourth quarter 2014. This included single-family, townhomes and senior apartments. Oswego ranked #6 in the Chicagoland market at the end of third quarter 2014.

● Conducted process of seeking redevelopment of Village-owned downtown property.

● The Village Board adopted 2014 Village of Oswego Market Analysis providing an overview of local retail, office and industrial markets. Facilitated by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, the study provides an overview of the current conditions in the Village of Oswego’s

commercial and business park areas and was designed to help “set the stage” for the Village’s new comprehensive plan, which is well underway. The report also identifies potential retail, office, and industrial targets for Oswego. View the Market Analysis report at oswegoil.org/ED

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2015Oswego Economic Development staffers predict steady

retail growth will continue and look forward to a modest growth in new home starts in 2015.

In 2015, look for a variety of new projects and changes to the Oswego landscape:

● Oswego shoppers looking for a greater variety of stores in the Route 34 corridor, will be excited to learn DSW Inc. is building a 16,000-square-foot new prototypical building on the pad site south of Best Buy in the Route 34 corridor and plans to open in spring 2015.

● River View Ford has plans for improvements to the site, façade, and a building expansion to add 31,644 square feet including a new Quicklane addition and second floor to accommodate vehicle sales offices, and space for vehicle parts and service.

● New restaurants getting ready to open in the Orchard Road corridor include Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts, and Prohibition Junction Bar and Grill (in the former Tommy’s Sports Bar location).

“It’s a community rich in service, history and community pride,” says Brian Caldwell, co-owner of AutoSmart, a local auto dealership specializing in all makes and models of pre-owned vehicles as well as boutique services such as auto detailing, window tinting and concierge services.

As a member of the Oswego Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and former president of the Oswego Rotary Club, Caldwell has first-hand experience as an active community volunteer and service leader. He is one of 50 current Rotary Club members working to bring together people and resources to improve lives within the community and around the world and lending a hand with key projects including an annual breakfast with Santa, scholarships and dictionaries for third graders.

The small business owner who has both lived and worked in Oswego for 11 years, says activism and involvement are at the heart of community life. He is especially excited about the

networking and collaboration opportunities provided by a new nonprofit group meeting quarterly to help community partners meet their goals.

Other community organizations like the Optimists Club provide an array of activities and opportunities for community involvement. For more than 30 years, the Optimists have worked to enhance the lives of children.

Events like pumpkin races, Prairie fest, scholarships, essay contests and Easter Egg hunts all bring together local businesses, families and neighbors for a cause.

OSWEGO RECALLS DRAG STRIP RACING GLORY DAYSFrom muscle cars to souped-up, modified dragsters,

Oswego’s 60-year history of drag racing offers enthusiasts a slice of Americana right in their own backyard.

The Oswego Drag Raceway, open from 1955 to 1979, is best known for the hundreds of muscle car drivers and amateur racers who flocked to the venue from across the Midwest every Sunday from May-October.

Former Oswego resident Ben Brown recalls those early days as Kendall County hot rod enthusiast Darold Cutsinger first approached brothers Wally and Danny Smith about building a drag strip on their farmland.

Brown was among the first drivers on the original dirt track, racing his ’48 Chevy coupe with its mildly-reworked engine.

“It didn’t turn out so well due to the dirt,” recalls Brown, who reports the drag strip was paved the following season. An avid racer for years, Brown handled racing circuit publicity and wrote weekly for Drag News. From 1969 to 1984 he worked as a national booking agent, scheduling race professionals at the Oswego Drag Raceway and tracks across the country.

Cliff Wackerlin, a retired City of Aurora employee, remembers well his first visit at age 16 to the drag strip located just west of the Village on Route 34. From 1958 to 1967 he became one of the regulars, running his ’55 Chevy with a 301-cubic-inch Hilborn-injected engine against countless friends and setting a track record.

“Before the strip, as teenagers we used to race on multi-laned rural roads like Route 59 or New York Street,” recalls Wackerlin. “Within just a few years of its inception, the Oswego Drag Raceway was drawing hundreds to its Sunday races – often more than three times the population of the Village turning out – when famed drag racers and dragsters would compete for top speed honors.”

A fixture at the track, Wackerlin says he and his buddies originally helped test and calibrate racing clocks, staging their own unofficial pre-race day Saturday afternoon challenges down the track.

At the time, scores of fuel-injected ’57 Chevys vied for speed and bragging rights. “In just a few short years, there were rapid advances in technology and we witnessed the start of many touring pros,” recalls Wackerlin, who says all too soon the racing world became a rich man’s sport boasting corporate teams.

Wackerlin recalls Al Thompson of Al’s Speed Shop and his six-carb Chrysler Hemi in a Classic Research frame, who won a 1959 meet. “Al’s Speed Shop eventually became the place to go for the newest racing technology, expertise and parts,” says Wackerlin.

Other racers like Larry Teeter of Elgin, who became an early nationally known Chevy racer, record-holder and winner of the 1963 and 1964 nationals, and Palmer Lazarus, one of the godfathers of Midwest racing with his 56 Chevy racer – driven only on race days and never on the street – soon drew Wackerlin’s attention with frequent appearances.

“Donny Hausler of Plano was a big-time gas dragster racer

and Roger Clayton, an Aurora iron worker, made a name for himself with dragsters, altered dragsters and fuel dragsters,” recalls Wackerlin, who notes Clayton’s son still races his dad’s cars today.

Wackerlin also recalls the day in the early 1960s when Chris Karamesines, one of National Hot Rod Association’s early pioneers and a main Sunday attraction at the Oswego Drag Raceway, ran his fuel dragster known as the Chizler, setting a speed record at 204 mph in Alton, Illinois – becoming the first to turn the 200 mph milestone.

While the days of rebuilding an engine over a weekend may be long past, Wackerlin says cars are still in his blood – pointing to his current collection of a 1965 and 2014 Corvette, a 1965 Mustang with Cobra engine, a 1955 Chevy with a 502 engine, a 1932 Ford Roadster and a 1931 Ford pickup truck with a Corvette motor.

NOSTALGIA CONTINUES WITH ANNUAL EVENTOswego’s long drag racing history and its nostalgia

continues today as residents and racing enthusiasts celebrate Drag Strip Days in early September.

“The event features a Saturday night cruise night and Sunday car show with over 300 cars, food, vendors, nostalgic music and much more,” says Harry Warner, owner, Harry’s Auto Repair, and co-owner with his wife, Fran, of Carousel Sound.

Involved for more than 10 years in the event, another driver, Ted Beach of Ted’s Paint & Body in Aurora and owner of two Oswego race cars, says last year’s 2014 reunion cruise and show set the bar high, offering awards to best original or modified racers, street rods, pro-street, nostalgic gassers and dragsters.

Beach grew up on the southwest side of Aurora, about eight miles from the track, and says that on days when the wind was blowing the right direction he could hear the cars racing.

At 15 he bought a black 1960 Chevy Biscayne 327 with a three-speed on the floor and rebuilt it. After turning 16, he began racing at Oswego.

“Later on, my friend Jim Simpson and I bought a 1967 Dodge RT, rebuilt the motor and decided to go racing together,” Beach says. “Luckily for me, the car was a four-speed and he couldn’t drive stick, which left me with the driving duties.”

The duo managed to win a race with that car in run tuff eliminator. Later he had a 1969 Camaro that he also raced and won with at Oswego.

Beach restored and now owns “Daddy’s Thing,” a 1958 Chevy Bel Air. The car was originally built and raced by Frank Marshall of Naperville in the early 1970s, along with his wife and his seven daughters. His wife also raced a 1971 Plymouth Duster.

“The car was a regular in the run tuff eliminator class and

many people still come up to us at races and shows to tell us they remember seeing the car run at Oswego all the time,” says Beach.

When the track closed, Beach turned to boat racing, then mud racing with a blown 4x4 Chevy truck, and eventually started restoring muscle cars before getting back into drag racing in the mid 1990s with a low 9 second ’68 Chevelle and then a low 8 second ’70 Camaro. After acquiring an original 1958 Chevy that was built and raced in the 1970s, he began a major restoration project, bringing it back to life in his shop. Eventually the Midwest Gassers group at Great Lakes Dragaway convinced Beach to start racing the car and reignited his racing bug.

“Soon after that I recreated Ray Lumbert’s Uncle Sam 37 gasser and started racing it,” says Beach, who today drives “Uncle Sam” while his two sons share driving duties in “Daddy’s Thing.”

“I think it’s very special that this car that helped build so many memories for Frank Marshall’s family and is doing the same for my family all these years later,” he adds. “It really is an honor to help carry on the legacy of that car and that track, as well as that era of drag racing, that so many people still fondly remember, as well as for the people who missed out on it.”

This year’s Drag Strip Days event, celebrating 60 years of Oswego’s racing history, is slated for Sept. 12-13 at the Park ’N Ride lot off Orchard Avenue, just south of Route 34.

Parks & Recreation

With 1,000 acres of park space open and ready for adventure, Oswegoland is a great place to play. The Oswegoland Park District (313 E. Washington St.) has a vision of “creating opportunities for a healthy community”. That goal is exceeded all over the community with parks, playgrounds, natural areas and amenities throughout Oswego and the surrounding areas. These places to play are open to all who look to delight, gather, celebrate, learn, and enjoy nature. The park district maintains 64 parks, greenways, miles of trails, as well as a variety of attractions for all ages. Enjoy playgrounds, tennis courts, roller hockey rinks, fishing, and so much more. PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE TRAILSThe Park District has 16 miles of bike trails throughout

the community, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor activities year-round. Stroll, walk, jog, run, pedal, roll, or skate your way to good health and a great day on the area’s many recreation paths. A map of paved trails and local paths has been included in a Trail Guide, available online and in print at any park district facility.

SKATE PARKSSkateboards, inline skates, and bikes are all welcome at the

park district’s two skate parks. For those just getting started or wanting to improve their techniques, the beginner’s skate park located along the Waubonnsie Trail at Chesterfield Park is the place to be. Practice on the steel equipment including flybox, stairs, rails, spine ramp, and launch ramp.

The more challenging concrete skate park at Prairie Point Community Park, built by California’s Spohn Ranch, offers

three elevated sections that include stairs, hubbas, ledges, grind rails, and a five foot bowl. Bleachers provide a place for spectators to watch the action.

DISC GOLF COURSE AT EAGLE RIDGE PARK

The Park District’s 18-hole disc golf course is located at Eagle Ridge Park. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, however, instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc, similar to a Frisbee. A disc is thrown from a tee area to a basket, which is the “hole.” Players progress down the fairway, making each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer! There is no fee to play.

WATER PARKS AND SPLASH PADThe Oswegoland Park District features three terrific

water play experiences. The Civic Center Aquatic Park (5 Ashlawn, Montgomery) and Winrock Pool (21 Winrock Road, Montgomery) are open May through September and feature zero depth pools, play fountains, waterslides, and lap lanes. Season passes and daily fees are available for residents and non-residents. The Prairie Point Splash Playground (4120 Plainfield Road) features 17 spray and play features, this park is a busy place all summer long, offering a free and refreshing reprieve on hot days.

FOX BEND GOLF COURSEThe Oswegoland Park District’s Fox Bend Golf Course

(3516 Route 34) offers a challenging course at a terrific value! Fox Bend boasts plush fairways, mature trees, and meticulous greens. This 6,890 yard, par 72 course tests golf skills of all levels with 34 well-positioned sand traps and water coming into play on 10 holes. Group lessons, private lessons, putting greens, and a driving range are available for those just getting into the game or for golfers looking to fine tune their skills.

FITNESS, HEALTH & WELLNESS CLASSES AVAILABLE TOO!The Oswegoland Park District offers over 30 different

types of fitness classes each season for adults of all ages and abilities. Whether you like aerobics, strength training, Zumba, spinning, or yoga, you’re sure to find a program to meet your exercise needs. Find total health by pairing a nutrition class with your current fitness regimen. A variety of cooking and nutrition classes are offered seasonally. For those who would prefer some one-on-one time with the district’s Registered Dietician, personal nutrition counseling is also available.

YEAR-ROUND EVENTSOswego is the place to gather! The community comes

together to celebrate over Father’s Day weekend with the Oswegoland Park District’s PrairieFest Festival. The four-day fest features a carnival, parade, 5K Run and One Mile Prairie Dog Jog, national music and food featured on the Food Network’s Carnival Eats. Fall brings September’s Brew at the Bridge, craft beer event, and October’s Monster Mash Bash for the kids and haunted Park After Dark for teens and adults. The Park District closes out the yearly calendar in December with family favorite, the Oswego Holiday Express.

OSWEGO COUNTRY MARKETHosted by the Oswegoland

Park District, the Oswego Country Market on Main Street draws area residents to the downtown business district every Sunday morning from June through September. Unique local vendors, provide access to a variety of unique items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads and sweets.

RACES AND FUN RUNSThe Oswegoland Park District offers five endurance events

for all ages each year! The Oswego Big Mouth Adventure Race kicks off the event season in April with teams competing to complete a variety of challenges, all while canoeing, running, off-road, and on-road biking along the 16-mile course.

The PrairieFest 5K Run and Prairie Dog Jog offer a prelude to Father’s Day celebrations each June. Walkers and four-legged friends are invited to join in the fun of the one-mile Prairie Dog Jog, and participants in both races receive a tech tee, participation ribbon and refreshments.

If you’re a multisport athlete, then the I Tried a Triathlon in August might be your event of choice. This sprint triathlon is a great way to mix up training, set personal goals, or try a first triathlon with distances of a 250-yard swim, six-mile bike and two-mile run.

Oswego’s future Iron Man or Woman might just be in the Have Fun? You Won! Kids Triathlon in September. This mini triathlon is held each year specifically for girls and boys in third through sixth grade. Kids can compete individually or as

a team to complete the 100-meter swim, three-mile bike ride and half-mile run.

The district’s athletic event calendar ends in November with the annual Gobbler Hobbler 10K Run and Mashed Potato Mile. The scenic 10K is chip-timed and travels along the beautiful Fox River. Runners in both of these races receive a hoodie sweatshirt as well as the event’s signature walking pancakes.

The Limelight Theatre Company has been serving the Oswegoland community since 2000. An enthusiastic entity of the Oswegoland Park District, Limelight offers a wide range of opportunities including productions, skill-based classes, and workshops throughout the year. Each year, the theater company creates and performs around 15 different shows including full-length comedies, original productions, dramas, musicals, one-acts, radio dramas and more.

Making the theater company unique, Limelight adopts a process where teaching, learning, creating and sharing is just as important as the final product. Artistic Director Cori Veverka says

of the process, “When you grow and improve with each class or production, it is very easy to have an end product/production that you can be proud of.”

Limelight performs at a variety of venues throughout the area including local schools, the historic Little White School Museum, and even open parks in the summer of 2015. Limelight classes are open to aspiring artists as young as five and opportunities to audition and perform in shows are for actors eight and up.

Certain shows are designed to have a minimal time commitment, so that working adults and busy college students can be involved. Limelight offers several chances for families to share these theatrical experiences together, on stage and off.

Audiences throughout the area have been delighted by the group’s annual holiday performances, unique radio shows and summer schedule of theatrical events.
