Preface

1. Scope

This document collects procedures needed for basic operations on Alcatel-Lucent OSP PlatformRelease 2.4.It also explains the procedures related to the scheduling of commands and commands logging.

For convenient use, we decided to merge the Diagnosis Tools User’s Guide and the BasicOperations Guide in one single document. For historical reasons, the procedures present inthese two documents were put in two separate documents. As these reasons don’t exist anymore,we thought it more appropriate to group linked procedures together in a same document.

2. Audience

This document is intended for people who want to know the basic operations possible on the OSP2.4.

3. References

While you read this document, you might need to refer to other ones. What follows lists some ofthem.

2 In the Name field, fill in or select pfmalarm, then select Display in the Configuration menu.

Figure 1.5 - Configuration menu - Display

This is a unique object: it cannot be created, and no other object can beadded to the service.

3 In the Filtering: minimum level frame, select a severity level. All events and alarms below this level will be ignored by the service. The list ranges from Warning (1) to Benign (3) and from Minor (4) to Major (6). By default, 'Warning' is selected: as it is the lowest possible level, all events and alarms are kept in the service database.

Figure 1.6 - Filtering: minimum level frame

4 The Live Time… field defines how long a closed alarm is kept in the database before being cleaned up. The default duration is 600 sec's (10 minutes). Every 10 seconds, the Alarm service looks up the database for alarms that have been closed for more than 10 minutes and removes them. You are allowed to modify these settings.

5 Events and alarms are saved to the database ('commit') every 10 seconds or whenever 100 events and/or alarms have occurred. You are allowed to modify these settings.

4. Event severity level object

4.1. Description

When a service is created, a catalogue of all events that could be sent by this service is created atthe same time. Events are defined by the name, the code and the severity level. This level can bemodified to match specific requirements. The event severity levels can be customised via the eventseverity object, and are created at the installation of a service. Upon reception of an event, thealarm service overwrites the event severity level, set by prOSPer, with the value customised via thisobject.

4.2. Default level meaning

Table 10: Event security levels .

Default levels Meaning

Warning Simple indication, can be considered as normal behaviour of the system.

Threshold System behaviour can be considered as normal, but a system limit has been reached.

Benign An abnormal event has happened; no specific action to take; the system can continue processing.

Minor An abnormal event has happened; a specific action has to be taken locally in the process where the alarm was detected; otherwise the system cannot continue processing.

Blocking An abnormal event has happened; an operator has to take a specific action, otherwise the system cannot continue processing.

Major Abnormal system behaviour; there is no possible action to take; the system is not reliable any more.

It will be used by the alarm service to get the event severity level of events for which a specific event code (strictly positive) has not been populated in the corresponding event catalogue.

3 The description, cause, action and effects must not be populated here but via the message object of pfmconfig service.

This object is fully described in the OSP 2.4 Configuration Service Descriptionand enables language-dependent messages to be defined.

This message object requires a specific number to identify a language-dependent message. The following numbers must be used for the event messages:Event code * 4 to refer the event description message;(Event code * 4) + 1 to refer the event cause message;(Event code * 4) + 2 to refer the event action message;(Event code * 4) + 3 to refer the event effect message.

4 Click Create in the Event severity menu.

5.1. Description

The Alarm Box is a convenient control panel that groups information from any host about:

• memory and swap usage

• defence

• CPU usage

• disk mirroring status

• file system usage information.

It also monitors alarms related with the connected host through a "dummy" subscription.

The Alarm Box displays the information collected by thepfmhwagent service from the object. The operator profile musttherefore have provider rights to use the methods on the HostSupervision object for the Alarm Box to display.

2. Managing the Statistics service

1. Introduction

The management of statistical data by operators is based on a subscription mechanism. Asubscription to specific events of a specific service must be created first. An operator with providerrights usually creates the subscriptions. Then operators, usually with subscriber rights, can use thesubscription to display reports and perform various operations on the statistical data. However, the Subscription Wizard is now part of the pfmstat service. This very convenient toolimpacts many aspects of the procedures related with the management of statistical data. It isdescribed in “Subscription Wizard” on page 134 below.

2. Statistics available within the OSP 2.4 platform.

Reports are defined for the service during service development using statistical events in SIBs.There is no way for an operator to create or modify reports: they are part of the servicespecifications.

3.3.2. Monitoring of existing subscription

With Release 2.4, a new command “Monitor” allows the operator to open a monitoring windowbased on the specifications of any subscription. The procedure to follow is the same as the one for displaying a Normal subscription with orwithout dimensions. At the end of the procedure, just click on Monitor in the Subscriptionmenu.

It can appear that sometimes in the monitoring data shown, you get full "-1" counters data. This is normal, this only happens for normal subscriptions you monitor (not for monitoringsubscription you create). In that context, if the period (according to the granularity of thesubscription) has changed between two monitor requests, counters have been written todisk (counter files) and have been reset in memory segment of current period to zero, sowe loose some data if we give information at the first monitor request after the change ofperiod (as the monitoring is directly reading in that memory segment). In that case, instead of giving non complete information, we return all -1.

To illustrate, let's take the example of a monitoring every 10 seconds on a normal subscription witha 5 minutes granularity. Suppose the real counters value in memory segment of the current periodare:

At 10:29:35: 4, 2, 5At 10:29:45: 6, 3, 5At 10:29:55: 7, 3, 8==> Write of counters on disk + reset of memory segment to 0 at 10:30:00At 10:30:05: 0, 1, 0

The counters shown by the monitoring window will be:

At 10:29:35: 4-(value of first cnt 10s before), 2-(value of second cnt 10s before), 5-(value of thirdcnt 10s before)At 10:29:45: 2, 1, 0At 10:29:55: 1, 0, 3At 10:30:05: -1, -1, -1

10 If you minimise the Statistical Results window, you can see the new subscription in the list of available subscriptions for the service:

Table 10: Procedure for creating a monitoring subscription (Continued).

Step Action

96/216 3CL 02350 BBXX BAZZA Basic Operation’s Guide

Page 98: Osp 24 Basic Operations Guide Ed 06

Managing the Statistics service December 7, 2006

We can not show 0, 1, 0 because at 10:29:58, maybe some counters have still been updated inmemory but erased at the end of the period by the write operation. So, at the change of period, we took the decision to show "crazy" data to avoid showing inconsitantdata. We could, to avoid the surprise effect of the negative values, show all zeroes, but all zeroescan be a consistant data in some cases, while here we are in the case it can not be.

3.4. Televoting subscription

A Televoting subscription is similar to a Normal one except that :

• at least two dimensions are mandatory (with a maximum of three dimensions). The first one is the televoting session. The second / third ones are other dimensions (e.g.: service access number, the origin of the call, …).

• a specific report is dedicated to televoting, which is the only one to be selected for the subscription.

3.6. Adding dimensions to a subscription

3.6.1. Object as dimension

Execute the procedure below to add dimensions to a subscription.

At this point, the operator has to specify, for each object, which type of selection is needed. In theSelection window, there is a frame for each object. The operator has three possibilities:

• select all instances of the object,

• specify a SQL used to find the instances,

• specify a list of instances (limited to 20).

Figure 2.30 - Display selection frame in Selection tab

Selection of ALLThe operator has to select as Selection type ‘All’ option.

Selection of SQLThe operator has to select as Selection type ‘SQL’ option and to enter a SQL condition.

MN is the only attribute usable in the SQL condition. MN transparently maps to the right attribute(e.g. MN10, NAME) for that object.

EXAMPLES:

IMPORTANT: The space reserved for the counters is the space allocated for the existing instances when the subscription is created. Future instances created will never be considered by the subscription, unless the selection ALL is used. In this case, the subscription is dimensioned using all the tuples in the table, empty or not.

3.6.1.1. Selection of list

Execute the procedure below to select a list of instances.

5. DisplayReport Subscription with Dimension

The procedure to follow is the same as the one for displaying a Normal subscription. The operatorhas two additional possibilities:

• to specify a X-scale, either using time or one of the selected dimensions,

• to specify a sub-selection (All, SQL or List) for each object dimension, based on the selection made when the subscription was created.

This sub-selection is not available for report dimension, as all the events of the report are alwaysselected. There is a maximum of 500 instances if a dimension is used on the X-scale.

For a televoting subscription, it is possible to select a dimension as Y-scale. For example, the results of the televoting could be viewed by 'service access number' as X-scale and'origin of the calls' as Y-scale.

It is also possible to use the new command Monitor on any subscription with dimensions.

6. Operations on statistical report data

6.1. Introduction

The report window of a subscription allows calculating the total and the mean of the data bycolumn (V-Total, V-Mean) and by line (H-Total, H-Mean).When a total or mean are selected, additional series appear in the Graph display; in the Datadisplay, columns are added at the right or the bottom of the data sheet.

Command Description

Expand all Expands the tree branches down to the dimensions.

Collapse Collapses all branches, and returns the following (may vary depending on the operator logged):

Refresh Tree Refreshes the display of the tree. This command is needed because several operators can be using pfmstat at the same time, creating or removing subscriptions (which become then unavailable).

When the dimension is an object, itsmnemonics can be accessed, but they arenot displayed through this command. Thisis because too many mnemonics in someobjects would make the display last toolong.

10.4. How to view mnemonics

10.4.1. Warnings and conditions

The mnemonics are usually not displayed to avoid time loss and prevent heavy CPU consumption.

EXAMPLE: In a Prepaid service, one of the mnemonics is the subscribers' card number. This counts in millions: displaying such a mnemonic should therefore be avoided.

Moreover, mnemonics can only be displayed when they exist: for mnemonics to be available, thedimension must be based on an object.

10.4.2. Procedure

Execute the procedure below to view the mnemonics available with the selecteddimension.

Table 36: Procedure for viewing mnemonics.

Step Action

1 Make sure the dimension is based on an object.

2 Make sure the number of tuples will not exceed available time. Common sense should help you to avoid selecting dimensions with huge number of mnemonics. There is no limitation - but displaying millions of values would take inappropriate time.

3 Select the dimension.

10.5.1. Conditions

This operation can be compared with X-scale in the Selection data tab of the Subscriptionobject. By default, the X-axis of reports is expressed in TimeUnits, but other X's are possible.Only one dimension can be affected to X-axis. If you repeat the operation with a seconddimension, this last one will be the X-axis.If no dimension is selected as X-scale, the default scale is Time Units.

10.6. How to display a report, send it by mail or save it as a preference

10.6.1. Introduction

When you use the DisplayReport method on the Subscription object, you must:

• give the time scope considered,

• select one report.

This is the Easy data selection.

You may, optionally:

• select a dimension as X (or Y if televoting is involved),

• select some mnemonics.

This is the Advanced data selection.

The Stat Tree works rather the same way.

• With easy data selection, you can select one report and have it displayed or sent by mail, and you can save it as a preference.

• With advanced data selection, you can group several subscriptions belonging to different services, or several reports, using dimensions and mnemonics, into one display (the reports, graphs and tables will not be mixed together!).

You can then have the report displayed or sent by mail or saved as a preference.

10.6.2. Easy data selection

Execute the procedure below to make an easy data selection, display a report, send it by mail or save it as preference.

Preferences are time-related: all items in Time selection are relative, except Other, which isabsolute (you give it absolute start and end). It is therefore not allowed to use Other as atime selection if you want to save the report selections as a preference. Most certainlyindeed, the data stored for the days you would select in Other will be cleaned up the nexttime the preference is loaded.

10.7. Possible selections

10.7.1. Introduction

The information presented here explains the effect of selections made by the operator in the StatTree.

10.7.2. Only the report is selected

Figure 2.75 - Only the report is selected

The report 'LOGON RESULT' is selected. All the dimensions of the subscription 'OSP_operator' areimplicitly selected. Time Units is the X-scale for the report, as no dimension has been selected as X-scale. The mnemonics of domainid dimension are displayed. The labels of the X-axis are TimeUnits (or days, months depending on the Time selection).

10.7.3. A dimension becomes X-scale

Figure 2.76 - A dimension becomes X-scale

If no mnemonic is selected, all mnemonics of all dimensions are selected implicitly. As the svcdimension has been selected as X-scale, its mnemonics will be the labels of the X-axis.

10.7.4. No X-scale defined, mnemonics selected

Figure 2.77 - No X-scale defined, mnemonics selected.

The labels of the X-axis will be Time Units (or days, months…) as in case 1: no dimension has beenselected as X-scale. But the displayed values from the stat counters will be the sum of themnemonic selected in the first dimension and of the two mnemonics selected in the seconddimension.

1.1. Customised decoding libraries

When the output of the generic decoding library needs to be customised, it is allowed to select acustom library that will be used instead of the generic one. This library inherits the generic one; all the methods can be overwritten and adapted as needed.Only one decoding library can be used at a time; several customised libraries can be used atdifferent times or for different purposes. The library to be used must be selected according to theprocedure in OSP 2.4 Accounting Service Description - Operator’s Workflow.

3 • Provide a unique name for the decoded file.

• If left empty, a sequence number will be used as name.

In both cases, the name will be automatically prefixed with 'hd_' to give the file name.

4 Set the internet mail address to which the message will be sent at the end of the decoding.

5 Select Generic or Custom as decoding library.

See Section 1.1. "Customised decoding libraries" on page 170.

2.1. How to create a new report

Providers may create reports using the HISTORICAL DATA object. The accounting tickets are stored on disk in a binary format. The 'create' process converts them toa readable format and is driven by filters and selector elements. It provides a more flexibledecoding than the standard 'decode' process. The table below describes the procedure for creating reports. Once the decoding process isfinished, a mail is sent to the operator.

Page 188: Osp 24 Basic Operations Guide Ed 06

How to schedule a job December 7, 2006

5. How to schedule a job

By default, the commands that can be scheduled for recording are Create, Modify andRemove, because they change the state of the database. It is thus meaningful to be able to recordsuch commands. On the contrary, the commands Count, Display, Help and List cannot be scheduled, becausetheir purpose is to give information at runtime: they do not impact the information itself. There are some exceptions to this default behaviour.A designer can alter the default behaviour of a method for some specific reasons. For example, one cannot record the creation of an operator because the password would then be visible in anunencrypted format.

How to analyse command & session log December 7, 2006

10. How to analyse command & session log

Seven data are recorded in the Command Log when a command is launched:

• the command itself,

• its parameters,

• the operator who launched it,

• the date and

• the time of its execution,

• the CPU time consumed by its execution, and

• its result (ok / not ok).

If the result of the command is OK, there should be no possible misinterpretation, as thecommand and its parameters are available. If the result is NOK, verify in the table below which category of error the NOK result belongs to,and take appropriate action. (BARin14279).

Table 1: Error categories .

Error category means that... Example

Environment error The cause is external to the platform software.

The Oracle database is not running.

Syntax error The command launched by the user is not correct.

A mandatory parameter is missing.

Semantic error The syntax of the command is correct but the command cannot be played successfully.

The values chosen for the mandatory parameters identify more than one object in the database.
