Science Week

Science week was celebrated across Australia last week. This year the theme of Science Week was the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. During science lessons students at Osborne learnt something about this very important achievement in aeronautical science. They saw the video film of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the lunar surface and talked about the Apollo 11 spacecraft and lunar module that successfully carried the astronauts on their mission. It is such a remarkable scientific accomplishment – I suggest you take a moment to reflect on the moon landing with your children. Encourage them to talk to their grandparents or other friends or family members that would remember the day that man first walked on the moon.

Life Education Van The Life Education Van will be continuing at Osborne Primary School until Wednesday 28th August. Many students have already attended sessions with a focus on issues around food and nutrition, personal safety, physical activity, cyber safety, safety with medicine and legal drugs, depending on their year level. They also help children to develop relationship skills, positive communication (both face to face and online), problem solving and decision making skills which links well to our Play is the Way program.

Kindness

Want to raise kind kids? Explain the science of kindness.

CHILDREN OF ALL AGES Explain that the benefits of kindness are experienced by the person who receives the kindness, the person who offers the kindness, and anyone who witnesses the kind act. Everyone who feels the benefits of the kind act will be inspired to “pay it forward” by being kind themselves. Younger Children Say that kindness makes people healthier, happier, and more relaxed. You can explain kindness as a superpower that helps others and changes the world for the better. Older Children Discuss the chemicals released when we see, experience, or witness acts of kindness: Serotonin increases happiness and helps with appetite, sleep, and memory. Endorphins trigger positive feelings and are natural painkillers. Oxytocin reduces blood pressure and protects the heart. It produces a feeling of love and satisfaction. Next Steps Once you’ve explained the benefits, be sure to model kind words and deeds yourself. Acknowledge and celebrate when you notice children being kind. Encourage children to practice random acts of kindness/have a random acts of kindness challenge. Adapted from www.biglifejournal.com Brett Hose - Wellbeing Team

On Tuesday the 6th of August the Year 5 team started up the OS FM 87.6 radio

station for 2019. The radio is broadcasted every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

between 8:30- 8:50am so students can enjoy some entertainment before going

into class. Every week there will be a different radio team of four students running the radio pro-

gram.

In the office there is a Radio competition box and sometimes there will be a competition involving

students so please grab a slip of paper and write your name, grade, answer and the competition

name on the paper and then slip it into the box.

SKI CAMP

On Monday the 5th of August, a group of students from Years 5 and 6 attended ski camp at Mount Hotham. Each day the students started off with a lesson with a ski instructor and spent the afternoons improving their skills with teachers and volunteers. Although it was tricky to begin with, all students could ski confidently by the end of the trip. It was a wonderful week and the students were lucky enough to experience fresh snow on the last couple of days. All students who attended should be commended on their resilience and energy during the trip.

Well done!
