From The VicarageDear FriendsI am wri ng this in June with a forward view to July and early August, which makes me feel that what summer there is, is slipping through my fi ngers! This quarter of the year from May through to July is one of passionate ac vity in our rural villages. That is true for residents with gardens or allotments, as the schedule for sowing and weeding runs away from us with the lengthening days. It is also true of the village calendars as May Fairs and Open Gardens, Fetes, weddings and Music Fes vals crowd upon us.There is a sort of hinge point just around the la er days of July, as the school terms come to an end, when it is possible to catch breath, and then August proceeds at a slightly slower pace before picking up again for September. How does one hold on to me? One way is to get out into it every day and experience the longer light and see that the grass has grown, so that the sudden shock of fi nding footpaths impassable with heavy dewed seeded heads does not overwhelm.Another is to celebrate and mark the me. At the end of July and beginning of August we have two par cular celebra ons in churches. The fi rst will be Evensong in the li le church at Up Cerne. This is now a privately-owned chapel, but once a year the Turnauer family invite any who wish to a end this service, this year on Sunday th July at pm. A erwards there are refreshments on the terrace at Up Cerne House. On Sunday th August at noon we will hold our Lammas Day Celebra on at St Mary’s Cerne Abbas. At this we present with thanksgiving the fi rst fruits of the harvest, grain from the valley, bread baked in the village and beer brewed at the Cerne Abbas brewery. A er this we share a ploughman’s lunch on the green before the church. The dona ons and off erings given support the work of FutureRoots at Ryland’s Farm, and we hope to have an update on their work.Enjoy the summer, and feel free to come and join us!

Refreshments and cake on sale all a ernoon un l the prizes are awarded at the end of the show. Good Luck to all who enter!

Cheryl SpraySir Frederick Treves in his book Highways and Byways in Dorset: “On entering the main street of Cerne Abbas it is evident that some trouble has fallen upon the Abbey town. It is silent and well-nigh deserted. Sad to say, Cerne Abbas is dying. The joy went out of its life when the Abbey was taken away. Grass is growing in the streets, many houses have long been deserted, many have their windows boarded up, or are falling into listless ruin. Here are empty barns, gates falling off their hinges and doorways grown up with weeds. There are quaint old shops with bow windows, but the windows are empty of everything but a faded red curtain, while over the door in very dim paint, are traces of a name. One feels compelled to walk very quietly through the echoing streets and to talk in whispers for fear that the sleep of Cerne should be broken.” It is hardly a surprise that they decided to sell!

pm on Tuesday st October in Cerne Abbas Village Hall. Beginning in the ancient world and the Greek idea of heroism, we examine the a ermath of the Trojan War in The Odyssey (recommended edi on, EV Rieu’s Penguin Classic transla on). Modern takes on this saga from a woman’s viewpoint can be found in Margaret Atwood’s recent novel The Penelopiad or Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls.Several centuries on we come to Henry Fielding’s block-buster Tom Jones, introducing this picaresque and rakish foundling who swashbuckles his way through a series of adventures and misadventures.About a hundred years later in Charlo e Brontë’s Jane Eyre we follow the fortunes of a young woman whose integrity and courage marks her out as a heroine not just of her own me, but for our me too.Next is Great Expecta ons ( ) in which Dickens provides an extraordinary cast of characters as he charts the progress of Pip from childhood to maturity, exploring some of the most extreme manifesta ons of human behaviour. Graham Greene, in his novel Brighton Rock, presents the reader with vicious psychopathic teenager Pinkie – a fana cal Catholic and a murderer – perhaps one of the most shocking depic ons of wickedness in fi c on.The fi nal book is Gail Honeyman’s acclaimed novel Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. We realise early on in the book that she is not fi ne at all; as the story progresses we encounter unexpected quali es of heroism as well as iden fying the real villain of the piece as Eleanor starts to unravel the traumas of her past. The tutor is Liz Merry, and anyone interested in joining the class can contact her at [email protected], www.elizabethmerry.co.uk

Men who spend long periods of me outdoors are being urged to protect themselves against the sun this summer amid a rise in the number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer in the South of England. Farmers, builders, sportsmen and gardeners are all being targeted to “Cover Up, Mate” because of their prolonged exposure to the sun – men are a par cular focus because research indicates that they are much less likely than women to slap on the sunscreen. Na onal Farmers Union South West Regional Board Chairman, James Small, said: “Working in the rough, tough world of farming, we o en want to brush things off and just get on with the job, but there are mes when that kind of resilience can come back and bite you and this is one of those. We owe it to ourselves and our families to take the risk of skin cancer seriously and above all if we are bothered by something not to dismiss it, but get it checked out.”

be cleared, have approved for the hawthorns in the Snicket to be removed, along with shaping the yews in the burial ground. The posts and benches in the play park have been fi xed. On the subject of the Snicket, there is a large planter which is causing an obstruc on. We understand that it was le by a previous owner. This is going to be removed but if anybody wishes to take ownership please let us know. The chalking of the Giant is ge ng closer. Cllr Richard Wilkin is going to lead on this for CVPC. We will then make our way to the village hall for our yearly social evening. Please remember to bring a dish of fi nger food to share and a bo le of your chosen pple.

Thanks, lett ers and other SNIPPETSTHE OBSERVANT DOG WALKER It’s summer, so they say, with the Sols ce having happened by the me this reaches you. But the current cold weather is not encouraging us to be outside and the bu erfl ies have disappeared again a er a brief appearance earlier in June. I’ve just watched the Countryfi le forecast for the week with no encouraging high approaching, so wellies and winter woollies go back on and, dare I say it, hea ng in the evenings!

However, dog walkers are a hardy bunch and (mostly), the dogs too. Our paths and fi elds will always see these dedicated owners giving their pets their daily exercise. That brings me to a story of extreme exercise in challenging condi ons – have you read The Salt Path by Raynor Winn? It’s recommended reading for anyone who enjoys an extended walk and who maybe has that li le bit inside them which says “doing the SW coast path would be good”. This personal story is what underpins the amazing achievement of walking the miles plus from Minehead to Poole with only a small tent for shelter. Our walkers can head home to warmth and comfort whatever the weather!REMINDER TH LEIGH FOOD FAIR & VINTAGE/CLASSIC CAR/BIKE DISPLAY on Saturday th July am to pm, Leigh Village Hall, DT HL. Cerne’s iconic red phone box gets some much needed a en on today as Mick and Luke from DC Transport give our Gilbert Sco designed K a new coat of ‘Post Offi ce Red’ paint. The door is made of teak, unlike the rest which is cast iron. First appearing in , which coincided with the fi rst appearance of the revised black Bakelite phone, the K (the K stands for kiosk) became a much loved icon. It was the fi rst unifi ed UK kiosk design and was even installed in Bermuda, Malta and Gibraltar. The Cerne phone box is being taken over by the village as part of BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme with over , kiosks adopted.
