    Retail Lighting

Retailing worlds – shops, bout iques, out lets, showrooms, mega shopping malls and large stores – are a main focus for Ansorg. In the success areas of sports, fashion, automotive und beauty Ansorg has successfully posit ioned itself as a trendsett ing supplier of modern light ing solut ions. Well-known brands are based world-wide on this know-how. Tried and tested series products which have been awarded design prizes are in this context just as much Ansorg’s strong point as are situat ion-related special solut ions at the leading edge of light ing technology. It is only with the help of light that the tension eld between the observer and the goods becomes a visible and tangible medium. Retailing has therefore, despite e-commerce, or exact ly because of it, gone off on ights of fancy as an alternat ive that can be experienced. New standards, examples and prospectscharacterise the future light ing business. Good design, the latest technology, the highest degree of ecological protect ion have become image and market ing factors which part icularly at the point of sale can be convincing and be decisive for success.

    Retail Lighting Food

Food makes high demands on optimum scene sett ing with light. Light ing design in the food area, from discounters to delicatessen shops requires high professionalism and sophist icated know-how. The presentat ion of food is always an area of invisible values. Compliance with standards, energy savings effects, and excellent light ing qualit ies are only to be achieved and optimised by means of constant innovation. Light can bring about posit ive emphasising of the quality of products and underline their authent icity. This quality is in line with the needs of many customers in a world which is increasingly perceived as being too art i cial. A further approach from the invisible values of high-quality light ing is of an economic nature: luminaires with innovative lamps and a high luminous ef ciency reduce the numbers of units and thus the capital expenditure. Ansorg has been dealing with such optimisat ion and problem areas for decades and is constant ly optimising, specialising and focussing its products.

    Architectural Lighting

At the start of the 21st century, architecture is increasingly acquiring a greater role and receiving more attent ion when it is a matter of present ing corporate values and public prest ige. Modern architecture and up-to-date design are values which can set buildings, rooms and companies and organisat ions associated with them apart from the mainstream. Architecture and the light ing design associated with it architectural applicat ions are therefore to be viewed as the royal discipline of light ing design is occupying an increasingly larger guiding example funct ion. The market characterised by high-speed change therefore demands in this segment excellent variable standard ranges as well as highly complex special solut ions. Technical building management and light ing design are inseparable components of a holist ic light ing solut ion which we develop joint ly with our customers. Space, light, design and ecology provide the new architecture with a characterist ic dimension. Together they form an impressive, modern att itude to which we feel committed.

    A Compendium of Lighting Technology

What is the best light for the respect ive purpose?

Is selling, informing, scene sett ing, work being carried out? Where is the space or room and what is it like? What is the daylight like? What kind of atmosphere is to prevail? What is the course of gaze like? Where is ambient light to take effect, where are accents placed? How is the light distributed? On what merchandise? In what situat ions? Where are the basics appro-priate? What are special ideas and solut ions needed for?

These are quest ions that our engineers who support development with scient i c know-how also ask themselves: where is which luminaire solut ion the right one with which lamp? With which concept? Where is which technology effect ive? How to calculate, how to verify? In what intelligent and pract icable implementat ion? And how do you combine innovat ive tech-nical quality with economic ef ciency, sustainability and ef ciency?

In this process, many parameters are discussed which we would like to explain on the following pages about re ector calculat ion and assessment, about lamps, lters and ballasts, about engineering made to measure.

We would be pleased if the following pages ful lled their useful purpose, and provided help for our readers with one quest ion or another. Or if they permit insights into how we under-stand the topic.

Rotat ion-symmetrical re ectors are pro-duced by the rotat ion of a previously calculated re ector contour around any axis. They are used with point-shaped lamps.

Strip re ectors are produced by the displacement of a previously calculated re ector contour perpendicular to the plane of project ion. A dist inct ion is to be made between symmetrical and asymmetrical re ectors. They are used for elongated, tubular lamps.

Re ector technology Types and shapes

    The basic re ector types

Together with the lamp, the re ector determines the light quality and the economic ef ciency of a luminaire. It is its task to collect and focus the light and to direct it onto an effect ive area, with glare being avoided at the same t ime. Depending on the size, shape and material structure of the re ector, different beam angles and luminous in-tensity distribut ions are possible.

Among others, there are rotat ion-sym-metrical re ectors and strip re ectors. The shape of a re ector is based as a matter of principle on mathematically described curves, the conic sect ions. In pract ice most ly freely calculated contours and/or mixed shapes are used in order to permit opt imum light distribut ion for the many areas of applicat ion.

    General diffusion light source

A general diffusion lamp distributes the light ux throughout the whole room.

  • 51 Light ing tools 12 l ansorg l

    Ellipse

The special feature of the ellipsoid re ector is to be found in its two focal points. All of the beams originat ing from the rst focal point are re ected to the second focal point. If the second focal point is in the emergence plane of a ceiling opening, it is possible to direct a lot of light through narrow apertures.

    Involute

The involute is not one of the conic sect ions. With it every light beam tan-gent ially leaving the intersect ing plane of a tubular lamp is re ected in itself and directed around the lamp. No re ect ion takes place. In that way the lamp is subjected to only litt le wear and the ef ciency is increased. The shape of the involute is used, for example, as a head re ector for uorescent lamps.

    Parabola

Each parabola encloses a focal point. All of the light beams originat ing from this point are re ected parallel to the axis. The parabola shape generates a narrow beam angle for precisely accu-rate illuminat ion.

    Circle

All of the beams originat ing from the central point are re ected in them-selves. Upon a slight displacement from the central point posit ion a real image of the lamp is produced immediately adjacent to the original lamp. This con-tour is used in counter-re ector systems.

    The basic re ector shapes

Mixed shape with Silla as the example

In pract ical applicat ion the curves often deviate. They are calculated freely in order to systematically comply with problem de nit ions. The spot light Silla is posit ioned in the centre of aisle are-as and illuminates rows of shelves on the right and the left at a certain height at the same t ime. In this case several re ector segments in a transverse direc-t ion were used.

What counts with regard to the light ing in a museum or an open-plan of ce, is not mandatory for merchandise presen-tat ion in a department store or shop – and vice versa. The basis for the re ec-tor calculat ion consists of the speci c, individualised demands made by our clients, light ing designers or architects.

Technical requirement parameters are, for example, the type and wattage of the lamp, the beam angle to be achieved, the re ector diameter, the qualitat ive form of the light intensity distribut ion curve ( LIDC). Further gener-al quality requirements are: homogene-ous beam pattern, appropriate glare reduct ion, a long product life of the lamp and the ballast equipment as well as, decisively, the energy ef ciency and the light output rat io.

Re ector technology On the quality of re ector calculation, Part 1

The matching beam angle for the lighting task

The beam angle to be achieved is ob-tained from the radius of the circular area which is to be illuminated and the space between the light points. There-fore the smaller the angle is the nar-rower/brighter the illuminat ion of the object is, the wider the beam angle is the larger/weaker the illuminat ion is.In shop light ing, the most varied prod-ucts are illuminated – from mobile phones via the fashionable out t as far as the shelf area. From this, demands made on the size of the cone of light are deduced. In order to cover the wide range of tasks required in actual prac-t ice, Ansorg’s range comprises four main re ectors.

Illustrat ions: Super Spot re ector 0°– 9°for precisely accurate scene-sett ing for very small items of merchandise

Spot re ector 10°–19°for the illuminat ion of individual objectssuch as bags or pictures

Medium Flood re ector 20°– 29°for larger objects such as busts or furniture

Flood re ector 30°– 39°for the illuminat ion of shop window dummies or shelves

    without illustrat ion:

For wall illuminat ion there are special wide re ector types:Wide Flood 40°– 69°Very Wide Flood > 70°

  • 53 Light ing tools 12 l ansorg l

    Re ector diameter

An important parameter for the devel-opment of the contour is the size of the re ector diameter. This can, for exam-ple, in the case of recessed luminaires, be deduced from the ceiling cut-outs. At Ansorg there are mainly standardised ceiling cut-outs of 130mm and 185mm which make the design of a homogene-ous ceiling pattern possible and reduce mount ing costs and t imes.

A further criterion is the lamp opening. It has an in uence on the light output rat io. It is necessary to place the re ec-tor as close as possible around the lamp so that no light is diffused towards the rear and lost unused.

The ef ciency of re ector/luminaire sys-tems is generally equated with the LOR (light output rat io) ef ciency. However, this stands only for the quant ity of light output by a luminaire. The assessment of the ef ciency of a re ector exclusive-ly according to its LOR value is one sub-aspect and can in certain circumstances produce a misleading result.

One simple example: a freely burning lamp has, for example, an LOR of 100%, but the illuminance is not suf -cient for accentuated illuminat ion of the object, because the light is distributed undirected within the room. It therefore does not illuminate the required object. A high LOR ef ciency is therefore not synonymous with the opt imum ful lment of the light ing task.

On the other hand, ef ciency is gener-ally de ned as the rat io of effort and performance. For re ectors, the objec-t ive is to direct as much light as possi-ble in a required direct ion: what is de-cisive is that arrives where it is meant to arrive. At Ansorg one therefore talks of an ‘applicat ion-orientated ef ciency’.

    Operating ef ciency

    Light distribution curves

The speci c distribut ion of the light ux arising from re ect ion can be pictorially presented with the help of a standard-ised light intensity distribut ion curve (LIDC). It describes the desired light distribut ion in the room and is a target for the development of the re ector contour.

Decisive for the light distribut ion curve of a re ector are the shape and size of the burner image in the re ector.

Re ector technology On the quality of re ector calculation, Part 2

The light distribut ion curve shows the opt imum and clearly delimited double direct ional beam of the luminaire Silla SIL

  • 55 Light ing tools 12 l ansorg l

Veri cation of the re ector contour

On the basis of the contours calculated beforehand, the contours prepared are read in with a separate simulat ion pro-gram and theoret ically evaluated with a real light source and, if necessary, corrected. At the beginning of the simu-lat ion, a high-gloss surface material is used that reacts part icularly sensit ively. The result of the simulat ion is a light distribut ion curve which serves as an assessment and decision-making basis before product ion of the tool or sam-pling takes place.

    Re ector material

The surface also plays a part in decid-ing the assessment of the quality of a re ector. The degree of re ect ion de- nes its quality level: simple solid alu-minium material has a high degree of re ect ion reaching 85 %, high-grade re ector material provides degrees of re ect ion of 95 % and above.

By means of different surface structures, further possibilit ies are obtained for the opt imisat ion of the light beam pattern.

Focusable re ector with Boxx as the example

This exible luminaire provides the funct ions general, ambient light ing and accent light ing in one product. What is special about Boxx is its user-friendly technology: the spot light can be focused without the use of tools and in nitely variably from 20° to 50°. By means of simple turning of the re- ector, you can achieve different light beam patterns – whether narrowly accentuated or wide beamed. Different beam angles are therefore possible without a change of re ector and this is advantageous in sales rooms with va-rying posit ioning of merchandise. The high-grade re ector material is sand-blasted and minimises scattering losses.

By means of in nitely variable re ector adjustment, the beam angle of the light changes, leading to a narrower or wider light distribut ion.

Interchangeable re ectors with Brick as the example

The opt ion of a large variety of inter-changeable re ectors characterises the Ansorg range. The luminaire Brick is compatible with different re ectors – achieved with a uniform burning posi-t ion. Four re ectors with facetted sur-faces and four different beam angles are available. By means of the easy and user-friendly re ector replacement, Brick permits the performance of all tasks: from point accent light ing to large-area scattered light ing.

Homogeneous wall illumination with Bola as the example

The luminaire Bola provides, by means of the t ilted forward 2-component re- ector, a homogeneous, and full-area light distribut ion on the walls – as far as the ceiling. The light quality and the large-area light distribut ion addit ionally permit large spaces between luminaires in light ing design, thus reducing invest-ment and running costs.

High-grade re ector material with Silla as the example

The spot light Silla designed for aisle area and shelf light ing is equipped with ultra-high-grade re ector material. This aluminium material has an extreme-ly high degree of re ect ion of up to 95 %. As a result, scattering losses are minimised and the light quality is increased. Also in the case of large spaces between luminaires, the homo-geneous illuminat ion is included to the full extent, a fact indicat ing great economic ef ciency. Silla provides three re ector types as variants for different areas of use.

The asymmetrical light ing distribut ion produces opt imum illuminat ion of the peripheral area.

HIT technology and light directing for the racks in the food area

Optimum merchandise presentat ion for fruit and vegetables is an important object ive in the market. Especially for this area, Ansorg has developed a re ector for HIT lamps. Due to the well thought-out combinat ion of re ector geometry, choice of material and struc-ture of the facets the light is distributed evenly and without colour differences over the area and over the goods.

Re ector technologySelected examples from practice

The re ector solves a number of problems in the characterist ics of the HIT equipment. Deposits on the burners of the lamp can produce undesirable colour effects on the goods.

The re ector from Ansorg produces a uniform light colour temperature and light beam pattern. Even in the corners of the racks a high light ing intensity is achieved. At the same t ime, scattered light is minimized.

In the light cone itself, only homogene-ous, white light is to be seen, without any disturbing colour re ect ions.

LED technology and the optimum light beam pattern in the retail eld

LEDs, with their posit ioning in the lumi-naire and their radiat ion characteris-t ics, entail new challenges for re ector de-velopment. In order to comply with the peculiarit ies of the LED light sources, re ectors also meet special requirements so as to achieve the opt imum result as regards light ing intensity and light quality.

The Take TKL spot light serves as an ex-ample of the requirements which a re ector must meet in actual pract ice. The LED unit used produces a high light ux and a high light quality. So that these parameters can be incorporated into a harmonious light ing atmosphere at the PoS, a re ector type has been de-veloped by Ansorg which in its geometry is adapted to the LED unit.

Faceting permits effective control of the light ux from the LED unit to the goods. There are no undesirable lighting effects.

Here the problems arise with the use of plain re ectors. Some LED units then yield irritating light beam patterns, e.g. a dark spot in the middle.

This is the optimum light beam pattern: special faceting or structuring of the re ector enables effective light direc-ting which overlays the undesirable structures – in that way the light reaches the goods homogeneously and ensures optimum lighting intensity.

    Standards and safety

Computer-controlled goniophotometer in the Ansorg light ing laboratory for the measurement of spat ial light intensity distri-but ions

Ansorg’s light ing laboratory enables Ansorg to play on its home ground. This laboratory is equipped with a computer-controlled goniometer with an addit ional image-resolving luminance measuring camera: it makes it possible to determine the beam angle, the light distribut ion, the luminance and standardized ef ciency of the luminaires and the spectral distribut ion of lamps in compliance with the standards. The light ing laboratory provides our engineers with excellent condit ions for exploring, analysing and improving developments and products. At the same t ime, an important aspect is that the light ing technology requirements are not only achievable, but also reproducible.

Ansorg luminaires naturally comply with all standards concerning safety. Authoritat ive standards are the Interna-t ional Standard for Luminaires (IEC60598) and the Acts on Electro-magnet ic Compatibility and Electro-magnet ic Fields. This is con rmed by the cert i cates from many test inst itutes, including internat ional ones. Our aspi-rat ions go far above the basic require-ments of these standards and are docu-mented in our own company standards. So that Ansorg products can sat isfy the increasingly stringent demands, the in-volvement in specialist committees and working groups of ZVEI, LiTG and DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) is a further, future-orientated quality criterion.

    Long product life, simple installation

For HIT lamps a new generat ion of con-vent ional (KVG) and electronic (EVG) ballasts is in use. Technical innovat ions increase the product lives of the ballasts and set new safety standards. They are extremely pract ical as regards installat ion and since very recent ly they have been available in almost all wattages.

    Protection from overvoltage and overheating

Overloaded voltage networks and volt-age peaks are increasingly reducing product lives. The new electronic ballasts are protected from high voltage pulses of up to 2,500 volts, standard equipment is merely 2,000 volts.

Excessively high ambient temperatures can heat up and destroy a ballast. The new products are rated for + 55° C. As soon as the temperature rises further they switch off automatically.

    EOL (end of life) cut-off

As soon as the lamp has reached the end of its useful life and the light ing quality deteriorates, the ballasts cut off automatically. There is no ickering, the system is not overheated and the user on the spot immediately realizes when a lamp has to be replaced.

    Ballast technology

  • 65 Light ing tools 12 l ansorg l

    Longer product lives.

The technical advantages result in a longer service life which saves the need for frequent replacement of the ballasts and indicates economic ef ciency. The convent ional ballasts have an aver-age product life of 50,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 50° C. In the case of electronic ballasts even a mini-mum product life of 30,000 hours is guaranteed.

Simple installation with plug & play.

Connect ing up the luminaire is very easy. The integrated jack for the Wieland safety plug system permits direct connect ion of the luminaire and mains cable to the bal-last. This results in a exible and simple change of wattage, e.g. from 35 W to 50 W and 70 W. This aspect is of impor-tance part icularly for constant ly changing display and decorat ion spaces in retail ar-eas.

One of our specialit ies is the development and product ion of individual special luminaires. For a good reason, since for our customers the result is an unmistakable element of corporate ident ity, an independent part of corporate culture: luminaires that contribute their share to the unique posit ion and different iat ion in compet it ion. Via the design, or via the funct ion: those rather nondescript luminaires that solve complex problems on the spot, provide innovat ive approaches and combine quality with economic ef ciency.

This problem de nit ion is related to real challenges. For this, in the everyday work of the company not only many years of experience and high exibility are required, but especially staff with expert knowledge, in order to put the concepts into pract ice without any problems. Many successful projects are for us de nit ive proof of the fact that theory intermeshes with pract ice: for internat ionally expanding fashion brands, ultra-modern shopping malls, airports and cultural centres.

    Glossary

    Beam angle

The beam angle is the opening angle of the light beam of a luminaire or re ector lamp. It is determined by the type of construct ion of the re ector. Lu-minaires with a small beam angle pro-duce small, bright ly illuminated areas. Light sources with a wide beam angle produce large, but less bright ly illumi-nated areas. In the opening angle the luminous intensity drops off to half of the maximum value.

For homogeneous illuminat ion, wide beam luminaires with large beam an-gles must be used. For accent light ing as a rule narrower beam light is neces-sary. The characterist ic of wide beam light with larger beam angles is desig-nated as ‘Flood‘ and ‘Wide ood‘, that of narrow beam light with a small beam angle – for example 10° – is referred to as ‘Spot’.

Ansorg dist inguishes between six main beam angles:

    Superspot 0° – 9°Spot 10° – 19°Medium ood 20° – 29°Flood 30° – 39°Wide ood 40° – 69°Very wide ood > 70°

    Illuminance

Illuminance ( letter symbol: E, unit of measure: lux ) de nes how much light – from a light ing technology point of view more precisely how much light ux (in lumens) – falls on a certain area: it amounts to one lux, if the light ux of one lumen homogeneously illuminates an area of one square metre.

The illuminance is measured with an illuminat ion photometer on horizontal and vert ical surfaces. It does not, how-ever, precisely describe the brightness impression of a room, as this depends mainly on the re ect ion characterist ics of the room surfaces. In that way a white room appears, with the same illuminance, brighter than a dark one.

    Colour temperature

The light colour temperature of a lamp is described by the colour temperature in Kelvin (K). The commonly used lamps have colour temperatures in the order of magnitude of less than 3,300 Kelvin (warm white), 3,300 to 5,300 Kelvin (neutral white) to less than 5,300 Kelvin (daylight white).

    Colour rendering index (CRI)

The colour rendit ion of a lamp charac-terizes the colour effect which its light brings about on objects or persons. It is rated with the general colour ren-dering index Ra. This indicates how naturally colours are rendered in the light of a lamp.

The colour rendering index is derived from eight frequent ly occurring test colours. Ra = 100 stands for the best value; the lower the index is, the worse are the colour rendit ion characterist ics. Lamps with an Ra-index of less than 80 should not be used indoors.

    Lamp wattage

The power consumption (also lamp wattage) describes the electric power in watts (W) consumed by a lamp or a ballast. In the case of low-pressure and high-pressure discharge lamps, the addit ion of lamp wattage and power consumption of the ballast give the system wattage.

  • 69 Light ing tools 12 l ansorg l

    Luminous intensity/luminous intensity distribution

The luminous intensity (letter symbol: I) is the part of the light ux that radiates in a certain direct ion. It is measured in candela (cd).

The spat ial distribut ion of the luminous intensity (luminous intensity distribut ion) characterises the luminous exitance of luminaires and re ector lamps. The luminous intensity distribut ion is presented graphically in the form of curves, the luminous intensity distribu-t ion curves (LIDC).

Presentat ion of the photometric data:

    Polar diagram

If the luminous intensity (candela, cd) in the room (or within the planes) around the lamp or luminaire are measured and recorded, the luminous intensity distribut ion is obtained. This photometric curve is presented in what is referred to as a polar diagram. The luminous intensity is standardised to a lamp luminous ux of 1000 lm.

    Illuminance cone

The illuminance cone is used to illustrate the beam patterns of rotat ion-symme-trical luminaires It describes the light bundle emitted at one-half-peak-diver-gence or half-value angle. This is the term used for the aperture angle at which maximum luminous intensity is halved. In general the maximum value is achieved at a beam angle of 0°.

The illuminance cone diagram shows illuminance available within an area delimited by the half-value angler (light cone diameter) for various moun-t ing heights. The illuminance values E (lx) refer to the centre of the illumi-nance cone.

    Chart wall illuminance

For asymmetrical luminaires, illumi-nance values are given for different mount ing heights and distances be-tween walls. The illuminance values likewise refer to the centre of the illuminance cone.

    Light-source ef cacy

Light-source ef cacy is the measure of the economic ef ciency of a lamp. It states how much luminous ux in lumens (lm) per watt (W) of its power consumption a lamp generates. The higher the rat io of lumens/watts, the better a lamp applies the energy introduced. Here are some examples: – Metal halide lamp 100 lm/W, – Halogen lamp 30 lm/W, – Compact uorescent lamp 75 lm/W, – Tubular uorescent lamp 100 lm/W.

    Light ux

The light ux or luminous ux – meas-ured in lumens (lm) – is the luminous ef cacy of a lamp. It describes the output radiated by the light source in all direct ions in the visible range.

    Luminance

The luminance (letter symbol: l) is the measure of the brightness impression that the eye gains from a luminous or illuminated area. The luminance is measured in candelas per unit area (cd/m2).

    Operational ef ciency (LOR)

The operat ional ef ciency or light out-put rat io states how much of the lumi-nous ux generated by a lamp actually leaves the luminaire. The type of direct-ing of the lamp’s luminous ux and the thermal condit ions inside the luminaire determine the light output rat io.

    Degree of re ection

The degree of re ect ion states what percentage of the light ux falling on a surface is re ected. Light surfaces have a high degree of re ect ion and dark ones have a low degree of re ect ion: white walls re ect up to 85 % of the light, panelling in light coloured wood st ill up to 35 %, red bricks, on the other hand, only up to 15 %. Conclusion: the darker a room is furnished, the more light is required to achieve the same illuminance on the working plane.

The product philosophy of "the reflector as a luminaire" has been taken a step further with BOXX. The shape concentrates on essentials, while the function is based on high-quality lighting and electrical equipment. What is special about BOXX is the continuous adjustment of the focusing from narrow to wide beam carried out without any change of reflector which means that this is an extremely user-friendly design. Due to its flat shape this spotlight is suitable for areas with low ceilings.

    • Geometrical, graphic design• Zoom re ector with in nitely variable beam angle

permits the adjustment of the light beam to every requirement with only one movement of the hand

    • The at structure of the spot light is suitable part icu-larly for low room heights - also in the t ilted-out state

VELO is a spotlight with a mono-casing into which the transformer has been integrated. An efficient temperature management system leads to a markedly longer service life. Direct ceiling mounting is also possible in connection with a ceiling jack. Optionally VELO can be configured for mounting on luminaire carriers, as luminaires fitted on wall brackets or fitting on a suspended supply track. The toolfree replacement system for the reflector and the safety glass is a feature which indicates VELO's ease of handling. Anti-glare, mood filter or diffuser are meaningful accessories and supplement VELO's basic equipment.

    • Compact, organic use of shapes• Integrated temperature separat ion between re ector

and ballast• equipment in a very con ned space: this results in

a higher product life for all of the components and at the same t ime makes a compact structural shape possible

    • Ef cient re ectors and a high light output reduce the number of luminaires required
