    A). Overview in India:-

This months briefing looks at Indias automotive industry, it gives

a political and economic overview, light vehicle market, and the manufacturing and

components industry. The manufacturing sector has registered a steady growth in the past few

years. Exports of manufactured goods from India surpassed US$22bn in 2005, up from

US$6bn in 2000, and the Indian automotive supplier industrys sales are expected to grow by

around 14% in 2006 and 15 to 16% in 2007. Growth would be driven by strong demand for

automobiles in the country, and high growth in exports of components. India is fast becoming

a global outsourcing and strong skills base, and with the emergence of Indian suppliers into

the global market, the Indian manufacturing industry is gearing up for expansion.

Renault already has a partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra for

selling the Logan in India. The two partners, along Nissan, are also putting up a greenfield

plant in Chennai which will be used by all three. Renault is also putting up a powertrain plant

in India as a 100% subsidiary. M& M plans to focus on the SUV market.

Estimating a good market of high network individuals, all Japanese

bike makers are launching their mean machines in the Indian market. Yamaha, Suzuki and

Honda are lining up their top bikes for the Indian market by 2007 end and 2008.

Over a period of more than two decades the Indian Automobile

industry has been driving its own growth through phases. The entry of Suzuki Corporation in

Indian passenger car manufacturing is often pointed as the first sign of India turning to a

market economy. Since then the automobile sector witnessed rapid growth year after year. By

late-90's the industry reached self reliance in engine and component manufacturing from the

    status of large scale importer.

With comparatively higher rate of economic growth rate index

against that of great global powers, India has become a hub of domestic and exports

business. The automobile sector has been contributing its share to the shining economic

performance of India in the recent years. With the Indian middle class earning higher per

capita income, more people are ready to own private vehicles including cars and two-

wheelers. Product movements and manned services have boosted in the sales of medium and

sized commercial vehicles for passenger and goods transport.

Government has liberalized the norms for foreign

investment and import of technology and that appears to have benefited the automobile

sector. The production of total vehicles increased from 4.2 million in 1998- 99 to 7.3 million

in 2003-04. It is likely that the production of such vehicles will exceed 10 million in the

    next couple of years.

The industry has adopted the global standards and this was

manifested in the increasing exports of the sector. After a temporary slump during 1998- 99

and 1999-00, such exports registered robust growth rates of well over 50 per cent in 2002-03

and 2003-04 each to exceed two and- a-half times the export figure for 2001-02.

Side by side with fresh vehicle sales growth, the automotivecomponents sector has witnessed big growth. The domestic auto components consumption

has crossed rupees 9000 crores and an export of one half size of this figure.

The market shares of the segments of the automobile industry

The automobile industry had a growth of 15.4 % during

April-January 2007, with the average annual growth of 10-15% over the last decade or so.

With the incremental investment of $35-40 billion, the growth is expected to double in the

    next 10 years.

    B).ImportsExports of Automobile industry:-

    Imports:-

Indias automobile industry could increase import of components by as

much as 42 percent by 2013-14, based on current consumption levels. Imports could grow

faster, once free trade agreements (FTA) with a host of countries come into effect, says an

    industry body.

According to a study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of

Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on imports of auto components, the share of imported auto

components in Indias domestic market is set to make a manifold jump from the current 31percent.

In view of custom duty reduction on several auto components under

India-ASEAN and India-South Korea FTA, and forthcoming India-EU and India-Japan FTA,

the share of imports in domestic auto component market is likely to be 50 percent by 2013-

    14, the study said.

As per the India-ASEAN FTA, custom duty on auto parts like pistons,

piston rings, bumpers, gear boxes and radiators would be 0 by 2013.

Similarly, custom duty on motorcycle and engine parts would also come

down to 5 percent level or 0 under the India-South Korea FTA.

This could affect our plans to achieve the targeted size of $40-45 billion of

auto component industry by 2016 under the Automotive Mission Plan announced in 2006,

    said the report.

India continues to be a net importer of auto components, despite being a

    favourable destination for small cars.

The countrys trade deficit in auto components has soared from 371 million

dollars in 2004-05 to 2.8 billion dollars in 2008-09.

    6/52

Auto parts imports increased by an annual average rate of 30 percent during

this period but exports grew by 17 percent (much below the imports) for the same period.

The European Union continues to be the largest source of imports with a

share of 35-37 percent in our total auto component imports. Imports from China increased 4.5

times from 2 percent in 2004-05 to 9 percent in 2008-09.

South Koreas share grew from 15.4 percent to 17 percent in the same period

while that of the US and Japan came down. Of late, imports from ASEAN countries have

    shown a rising trend.

In order to ensure orderly development of domestic auto-component

industry in view of the growing challenges from various FTAs, FICCI suggests that the

government should create a conducive environment to attract investments in the sector, said

    a FICCI statement.

The government should provide fiscal incentives for promoting production

of critical and high value added components, it added.

The body suggested constituting an Automotive Development Fund (ADF)

and Industrial Adjustment Fund (IAF) on the lines of similar resources created in Malaysia.

The ADF in Malaysia is a government initiative which extends soft loans

(below market interest rates) to improve the overall competitiveness of the automotive

industry, particularly the parts and components manufacturers.

And IAF was established to assist Malaysian manufacturers to face the

challenges brought about by increased competition and liberalisation.

    A). History of Honda Company:-

History:-From a young age, Honda's founder, Soichiro Honda, Honda had a

great interest in automobiles. He worked as a mechanic at a Japanese tuning shop, Art

Shokai, where he tuned cars and entered them in races. A self-taught engineer, he later

worked on a piston design which he hoped to sell to Toyota. The first drafts of his design

were rejected, and Soichiro worked painstakingly to perfect the design, even going back to

school and pawning his wife's jewelry for collateral. Eventually, he won a contract with

Toyota and built a factory to construct pistons for them, which was destroyed in an

earthquake. Due to a gasoline shortage during World War II, Honda was unable to use his

car, and his novel idea of attaching a small engine to his bicycle attracted much curiosity. He

then established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan, to develop

and produce small 2-cycle motorbike engines. Calling upon 18,000 bicycle shop owners

across Japan to take part in revitalizing a nation torn apart by war, Soichiro received enough

capital to engineer his first motorcycle, the Honda Cub. This marked the beginning of Honda

Motor Company, which would grow a short time later to be the world's largest manufacturer

    of motorcycles by 1964.

The first production automobile from Honda was the mini pick-up

truck, which went on sale in August 1963. Powered by a small 356 cc straight-4 gasoline

engine, it was classified under the cheaperKei cartax bracket. The first production car from

Honda was theS500sports car, which followed the T360 into production in October 1963. Its

chain driven rear wheels point to Honda's motorcycle origins.

    History of Honda Activa:-

Honda Activa is the incorporation of

innovative design for better riding posture; ease of driving for

great stability on the road; and convenient body line for easier

and faster maintenance. Activa provides 8 bhp of maximum

power through its 109 cc engine. With all these features

Honda Activa takes a strong lead in the ungeared scooter

    market.

Honda Activa is recommended for its more practical and consrvative styling,

ease of use, better ride quality and the improved 109 cc engine. The scooter is also known as

a family two-wheeler for its higher load carrying capacity. The vehicle has the option of kick-

and self-start. The chassis is of high rigidity under bone type and the body panels are

    moulded steel sheet.

Activa incorporates better rider comfort and includes the puncture-resistant

"tuff-up" tyre and tube combination. It has low riding height and low noise 4-cycle engine. It

gives the mileage of about 45 km per litre in the long run.

The Honda Activa is an amazing bike. Ask anybody who owns it and they

will vouch for it. Let me introduce you to this 2 wheeled marvel and show you why Honda is

a master of their art of building 2 wheelers.

    A Winner among the Masses:

Since its launch in 2001 the Honda Activa has become a hit with both

men and women as it caters to the needs of both genders. Practical, comfortable, convenient,

reliable, durable, maintenance and stress free, workhorse, family carrier etc are some of the

    adjectives associated with the Activa.

    The Engine:

The bike has a 102 cc engine with v-matic 4-speed transmission and 7

bhp of power. The only shortcoming is, the bike gives only 40 km/ltr in city and 45 on

highway. I am sure this is a small price to pay as once you ride the bike and feel the

refinement ofthe engine even at 70 km/hr you wont mind about mileage at all.

    Lots of Storage Space:

The bike has plenty of storage space for little knick-knacks and

for those trips to the market and grocery stores. You have an optional storage compartment

box to fit beneath the handlebar for extra storage space. Beneath the seat you can keep your

full-face helmet and save money, as you wont need a helmet lock.

    Wings of Change:

Activa has a 6-liter fuel tank and has a range of 240 kms on

highways before needing a refill. The bike has a metal body that is sturdy and because of this

the bike weighs almost 110 kgs. The weight is an advantage to you as, cross winds wont

affect you when you are driving in city or highways and the bike is stable and steady on all

kinds of roads. The suspension and the wide comfortable seat keep the rider and pillion

isolated from the bumps and other irregularities.

    Have you got your Honda?

The Activa is the best bike for those crowded rush hour traffic

and nothing even comes close. You can out maneuver anything else with this bike and I think

you should call it traffic buster. The bike is in my opinion the easiest 2 wheeler to drive. No

gears, no clutch, self-start for easy starts. The bike has tuff-up tube tires on both wheels,

which are puncture proof. I feel the bike is even easier than a cycle as you have to just sit and

twist the throttle and zip away. Remember in a cycle you have to pedal and its a pain while

Honda Activa is a pleasure to drive.

Honda has always been a top automobile company and their

products are the best. Just take a look around you and you will realize that some of the best

bikes in India are from Honda. Unicorn, CBZ Xtreme, Hunk, Activa, Splendour, Passion,

Dio, Shine, the old CBZ, CBF Stunner, Pleasure etc. to name a few.

You see even Pleasure is also a Honda underneath. What I am

trying to tell you is that Honda tech is the one of the best in the world why else do you thinkcompanies like Kinetic and Hero had collaborations with Honda.

So obviously when Honda releases a product it will be truly

world class. Honda entered the Indian market with the active and soon the bike became a hit.

Honda established itself in India as a major 2 wheeler force. Later we had Dio, Unicorn,

    Shine and now Stunner.

selling bikes in young generation. Eg. Their capacity of selling is 100 Activa in a month.

Honda motors Co.Ltd sells around 28,000 units of Honda Activa

every month across its various dealers all over India. Recently in December, 2007 Honda

    Motors Co. Ltd.

E).Market share of Honda Activa with competitor share:-

Perfect in design and technology, Honda Activa is more than just

a means of transportation. The Convenient Lift up Independent Cover (CLIC), adopted for

the first time on a scooter in India, makes maintenance easier and faster, helping the rider to

get back on the road much quicker than any other scooter.

Honda Activa for its more practical and conservative styling,

ease of use, better ride quality and the excellent 102cc engine. The Activa is also built to be a

family two-wheeler and features higher load carrying capacity than the other two scooter.

    PRICE-RANGE: 44,000 -56,000-INR

Probable Income Range Of People Purchasing Honda Activa :

    Salaried: - Rs.6000 and above

    Professional:- Rs.7,500 and above

Business:- Rs. 50,000 per annum and above

Honda Motors Co. Ltd. has the largest market share in the non-

geared two-wheelers market. It sells around 28,000 units of Honda Activa every month

across its various dealers all over India. Recently in December, 2007 Honda Motors Co. Ltd.

celebrated 2 million mark in Activa sales. Also it is the most appreciated vehicle for its

simple looks combined with excellent performance on the Indian roads.

Activa was launched in 2001 but with the passage of time the tastes

and preferences of people ought to change. It has reached its maturity stage and now

company must add few new features to attract the young generation. Also to mention that

Activa is soon to face stiff competition from its own companys Aviator and Suzukis

    Access-125

Both new competitors are priced more then Activa but they have

completely new stylish looks and features especially designed keeping the market segment

buyers in mind. Also their color scheme and graphics are more appealing then Activa. Activa

lacks a front luggage basket which makes it inconvenient for the riders to place their regular

light weight stuff under the seat.

Key Independent Variables affecting sales of Honda Activa:

Easy Availability of Loans: The service sector also has boomed which aptly is

    reflecting in an

increased sale of vehicles especially in the automobile sector.Easy Availability of loans at a

cheaper rate would lead to an increase in demand of activa

Increased Living Standards: With development the peoples disposable income has also

    increased.

They are inclined towards purchasing more durable commodities for meeting their

satisfaction of owning vehicles for speedy and smooth movement around the city.

These factors have positive relation with demand for Honda Activa.

The below mentioned factors have inverse relations with demand for Honda Activa:

Mass Transportation System: India still does not have an efficient mass transportation

system. People are more inclined towards traveling in their own vehicle instead of using the

    lethargic state transport buses.

Technological Advancement : Technology is advancing at a brisk pace. And the producers

are smart enough to tap these changes to increase their product demand using the latest

technology. The technological advancement in a way would lead to a decrease in the demand

of activa as through technological advancement new fuel efficient substitutes having varied

new features would be launched and the people would tend to get fascinated towards them

    thereby reducing activas market share.

    A). Main objective of Research:-

To gain familiarity with a phenomenon as to achieve new insights into it.

To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular individual, situation or a group.

To determine the frequency with which something occurs or with which it is associated

    with something else.

To test the hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables.

There are many companies in Automobiles Industry:-

Maruti Udyog Ltd. General Motors India Ford India Ltd. Hero Motors Hindustan Motors Hyundai Motor India Ltd TVS Motors Bajaj Auto Limited Mahindra Group Yamaha Motor India Honda Siel Cars India Limited.

The object of our research is to find out the impact of Honda activa

satisfaction of Customers. We are to seek answers to following questions:

    1. Are our customers satisfied?2. Is the distribution system is convenient?3. Are they satisfied with the product?4. Do they like to prefer it again?

In other words we had to find out that, what is the ratio of the Customer thoseare using Honda Activa and why, when the substitute is present in the market.

    25/52

    B). Nature of research:-

    Basic Research:

Research that seeks to create new knowledge and is not directly

related to technical or practical problems. An example of basic research is a study

conducted to analyze the types of information systems physicians use. This research

provides new knowledge about a particular user group but does not specify a way this

knowledge can be used to solve a problem.

    Applied Research:

Research that seeks to solve problems practitioners in Library and

Information Science face. Using a variety of techniques this research aims to develop

solutions and recommendations that can be used to improve practices. A study

conducted on how information systems can be used to improve the ability of

physicians to more accurately diagnose illnesses is an example of applied research.

    Case Studies:

Examines in-depth the practices or trends of a single or limited

number of groups. According to the Second Edition of the Dictionary of Sociology

edited by Gordon Marshal, case studies include "descriptive reports on typical,

    illustrative, or deviant examples; descriptions of good practices in policy research;

evaluations of policies after implementation in an organization; studies that focus on

extreme or strategic cases; the rigorous test of a well-defined hypothesis through the

carefully selected contrasting cases; and studies of natural experiments."

    Empirical Studies:

Research based on critical evaluation through observation or experimentation.

    Experimental Research:

Examines the relationship between two variables. This type of

research conducts experiments on test and control groups to test a hypothesis about therelationship between two variables.

    C). Data collection method:-

    PRIMARY DATA:

The primary data are those data which are collected a fresh and for thefirst time. Primary data is also called as basic data or original data.

Methods of primary data. These are also called as sources of primary data collection.

    1. Observation method.2. Interview method.3. Schedules and questionnaire method.4. Internet

    OBSERVATION METHOD:

In Observation method we have observed that which product customers

is purchasing at retailers and for which product they are inquiring about.

    INTERVIEW METHOD:

Interview was conducted and the question were ask from the retailers

how do they like the product.

    QUESTIONNAIRE METHOD:

A structure and disguised questionnaire was prepared and the responses

were collected from the Honda Activa users for the research study. There were two

type of question open ended or close ended.

The main objective of questionnaire was to find preference of Customers

with regards to Honda Activa. The subsidiary objective was to find the aspects {i.e.,

4ps of marketing} in which it is lacking or leading.

So the questionnaire has been divided into four parts:-

    1} Information about product.

    2} Information about price.

    3} Information about promotion.

    4} Information about distribution.

  • 7/28/2019 Original Report of Rm

    27/52

In the 1st part question has been farmed together information about

product i.e., from the product customers feels excellent, satisfaction, good or poor. In

second part promotion has been undertaking. The question has been farmed such as

    have you seen the hoarding?

The option to question was very often, often, rarely and never.

The next two parts include price and distribution. The option to this

    question is close ended {i.e., yes or no}

Collected data have been presented in the report in the form of table,

which are analysis below the table. This analysis finally helped in drawing the

conclusion and making suggestion. This methodology is also useful to find out thenext result of the project.

    SECONDARY DATA:

The secondary data means that are already available in various reports,

diaries, letters, periodicals, etc. The secondary data are those which have been used

previously for any research and now used for second time. In short, the data presented in

research reports when used again for further research, the data are to be said as Secondary

    Data.

    Sources of secondary data :

    1. Life history, diaries, autobiographies, letters and testaments.2. Reports published by various organizations.3. Books, magazines, journals, newspapers, prospectus etc.4. Technical and trade journals.5. Use of mechanical devices.6. Census of survey reports.7. Various publications of state and central government.8. Encyclopedias ,bibliography, indexes etc.

    D). Response Rate:-

The responses of the respondents are good & all the respondents are

    co-ordinated with us while surveying.

According to Survey, the response rate is 100%.

    E). Sampling:-

Sampling is that part ofstatistical practiceconcerned with the selection

of individual observations intended to yield some knowledge about apopulationof concern,

especially for the purposes of statistical inference. Each observation measures one or more

properties (weight, location, etc.) of an observable entity enumerated to distinguish objects or

individuals. Survey weights often need to be applied to the data to adjust for the sample

design. Results fromprobability theoryandstatistical theoryare employed to guide practice.

    Bogrdus defined sampling as:

Sampling is the selection of certain percentage of a group of items

    according to a predetermined plan

    Mildred Parton defined sampling as

Sampling method is the process ormethod of drawing a definite number

of individuals, cases or observations from a particular universe, selecting past of a total

    group for investigation.

    1). Sampling Size:-

In our survey, the sample size is 150 samples out of the whole

population of Honda Activa Users.150 are the respondents who give the answers regarding

the Customers satisfaction of Honda Activa.

    2). Sampling Method:-

Within any of the types of frame identified above, a variety of sampling

methods can be employed, individually or in combination. sampling is divided in two

    categories

    1. Probability Sampling 2. Non-probability Sampling

    1).Probability sampling includes:

Simple Random Method, Systematic Sampling, Stratified Sampling and Cluster or Multistage

    Sampling

    Simple random sampling:

In asimple random sampleof a given size, all such subsets of the frame are given an equal

probability. Each element of the frame thus has an equal probability of selection: the frame is

not subdivided or partitioned. It is possible that the sample will not be completely random.

    Systematic sampling:

Selecting (say) every 10th name from the telephone directory is called an every 10th sample,

which is an example of systematic sampling. It is a type ofprobability samplingunless the

    directory itself is notrandomized.

    Stratified sampling:

Where the population embraces a number of distinct categories, the frame can be organized

by these categories into separate "strata." A sample is then selected from each "stratum"

separately, producing a stratified sample. However, if variances differ significantly across

strata, sample sizes should be made proportional to the stratum standard deviation.

Disproportionate stratification can provide better precision than proportionate stratification.

Typically, strata should be chosen to:

havemeanswhich differ substantially from one another minimizevariancewithin strata and maximize variance between strata.

  • 7/28/2019 Original Report of Rm

    30/52

    Cluster sampling:

Sometimes it is cheaper to 'cluster' the sample in some way e.g. by selecting respondents

from certain areas only, or certain time-periods only. (Nearly all samples are in some sense

'clustered' in time - although this is rarely taken into account in the analysis.)

Cluster samplingis an example of 'two-stage sampling' or 'multistage sampling': in the first

stage a sample of areas is chosen; in the second stage a sample of respondent within those

    areas is selected.

    2).Non-probability Sampling includes:

Accidental Sampling, Quota Sampling and Purposive Sampling

    Quota sampling:

In quota sampling, the population is first segmented intomutually exclusivesub-groups, just

as in stratified sampling. Then judgment is used to select the subjects or units from each

segment based on a specified proportion. For example, an interviewer may be told to sample

200 females and 300 males between the age of 45 and 60.

It is this second step which makes the technique one of non-probability sampling. In quota

sampling the selection of the sample is non-random. For example interviewers might be

tempted to interview those who look most helpful. The problem is that these samples may be

biasedbecause not everyone gets a chance of selection. This random element is its greatest

weakness and quota versus probability has been a matter of controversy for many years.

    Convenience sampling:

Sometimes called grab or opportunity sampling, this is the method of choosing items

arbitrarily and in an unstructured manner from the frame. Though almost impossible to treat

rigorously, it is the method most commonly employed in many practical situations. In social

science research, snowball samplingis a similar technique, where existing study subjects are

used to recruit more subjects into the sample

    3). Survey Tool:-

In our survey, we are used questionnaire forms as our main survey tools.

    4). Sample element:-

    F). Pilot Survey:-

The main purpose of pilot survey is to analysis the questionnaire

which is understood by the respondent or not.

In our pilot survey, our sample size is 10. There are some problems

arise regarding questions of questionnaire because some of the questions options are not

related with the respondents choice of view.

When we were surveying, most of the respondents are doing mistakes

while fill up the questionnaire form. They could not understand the few questions & some of

the questions objectives and some difficulties regarding questions.

For example, some questions is like,

    1. Why did you prefer Honda Activa? (Rank them from 1 to 5).2. While purchasing Honda Activa which factors do you consider most

important? (Rank them in order of importance).

All the respondents gave 100% response while surveying the pilot

    survey of questionnaire.

    G). Limitation of Study:-

The project also has some limitations in it. No doubt the sincere

efforts have been made in order to get fruitful results but still we had encountered few

    limitations as such:

As the sample size was more than 100 findings cannot be generalized to the wholepopulation.

The research work has been completed with the span of few days and the timeavailable was limited to carryout prefect research.

We did not receive desperate response from the respondents; very few showed theirinterest in answering them.

The limitation is on the basis of perceptions of interviewer and interviewee. The area selected for survey was Surat city. Due to large geographical area it was difficult to choose appropriate sample. At last after having all the above mentioned limitations the project cover all the major

aspects of analysis in order to prove the attributes affecting customer satisfaction.

    Chapter-5

    Finding or conclusion

After the analysis of the conducted survey the very first thing observed is that twowheelers like mopeds or scooters are largely used by students for purpose of tuition or

college transportation and also by the housewives for moving within the locality.

The medium through which respondents get the information of Honda Activa is alsoof high importance. As per our analysis, most of the respondents get the information

of Honda Activa through their friends & relatives. So the word of mouth plays a role

here. The promotional advertisement and mass media also plays a major role as a

source of information as most of our respondents here are of student community,

business men, jobbers, housewifes who get highly influenced by the promotional

advertisement or their friends or relatives.

When asked about other two-wheeler mopeds preferred by them, again Honda winsthe hearts of people along with its another product Dio, aviator etc.

The next thing the respondents consider before purchasing the two wheelers is thelooks & comfort level. Honda Activa provides with the best looks which we can

conclude from the above obtained data. Also the respondents are greatly satisfied with

the comfort of Activa. And hence here we meet the consumer requirements with

    Honda Activa.

Here its a bit disappointing fact for Honda Activa as many respondents are notsatisfied with price & after sales services.

As per the ratings and opinions provided by the respondents on the whole they aresatisfied with Honda Activa but there are a few loop holes which cannot be neglected.

The most unsatisfactory factor here is the mileage of Activa which as per our analysis

many respondents are disappointed with. Hence more emphasis should be given on

this factor during the development for future marketing strategy. Service and

maintenance cost for the Honda Activa is quite high.

Many of the respondents do face the problems with the delivery of Activa on thecommitted time period even after giving a cash on hand to the dealers.
