ORIGINAL FLOUR MILL REMEMBERED AT THE AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS.

As part of the Australia day celebrations a display containing two signs from the original Flour Mill

were uncovered by the founding members of the Wedderburn Lions Club, Ray Tonkin, Frank

Canfield, Cliffe Hannah and Lance Ward. The full story of the flour Mill will be in the March edition

of Scoop & Scuttlebutt.

We continually hear ‘There is never anything on in Wedderburn’!

So what a great concept Marg has come up with for all you would

be dancing enthusiasts out there.

We all go to at least one Deb Ball in our lifetime – whether it be as a debutant/ partner or the proud parents, grandparents or

relatives.

Most comments, other than how good they all look, is the great job the trainer has done in getting these young people up and

dancing outside their comfort zones.

We are all in awe of their moves and the confidence displayed on the night. But will they get the opportunity to use these moves

again? Or - I wish I could dance like that!

Well now is your chance to get expert tuition from one of these

Deb Ball specialists – Dee Dee Williams.

Beginning on Tuesday 24 February you have the unique oppor-

tunity to have Dee Dee show you and your partner all the moves.

Culminating with the special Masquerade Ball on Friday night,

May 1st.

Dance packs are available $100 for 10 classes plus 2 tickets for

the Masquerade Ball.

Singles packs $80 for 10 lessons and a ticket to the Ball.

This is a great Valentines Day gift and who knows, this could also be the chance of a lifetime for those singles out there looking for

someone to dance with!

Don’t the sunflowers look a treat at the Centre!

The bees are certainly making the most of the blooms, at times

completely covering the seeds.

Several people have contacted us to let us know they have some

beauties also at their place.

Unfortunately many did not get much of a kick start with such a

dry spell before the rain eventually came.

Ours have been lovingly tended to by Robbie and his crew and we thank them for keeping our gardens watered during the hot

summer months so far.

STORMS MAKE A SENSATIONAL BACKDROP FOR SOPHIE & CAMERONS SPECIAL DAY.

On January 3rd, local girl Sophie Holt (eldest daughter of farmers, Tony and Alex Holt) married Bendigo boy (and Wedderburn Footballer)

Cameron Taylor (youngest son of Tony and Melanie Taylor) on a day that delivered the most spectacular and extreme weather conditions.

The forecast leading up to the wedding looked ominous: violent winds, 44 degree temperatures and inevitable dust storms. The wise

young couple decided to contact all their guests two days before the wedding to inform them that the ceremony would take place at 6pm,

rather than 3.30pm, to try and escape the heat of the day. January 3rd arrived and the wind gusts were even more aggressive than

predicted. Dust swelled in the air and created a smoky haze in the skies and the mercury rose quickly. Wonderful friends, family and

neighbours rallied together and set up in heat and dust without complaint.

The guests arrived at the farm around 5.30pm where they were ferried by bus to a secret location. Three kilometres from the Holt home-

stead, was the most majestic old red gum tree, under which Sophie and Cameron planned to exchange their vows. The guests were

dropped off on Amaroo road where icy refreshments awaited in wheelbarrows before embarking on a 200 metre walk. Several quirky

quotes painted on old timber boards erected along the walk kept the guests amused until they arrived at the ceremony site. Old church

pews and redgum sleeper seats were arranged under the tree for guests or they could stand if they preferred.

While the site was somewhat protected, the wind did not relent and a massive dust cloud was rolling in from the north. The guests must

have been bracing themselves for the bombardment as

there was no escape and no vehicles to run to for

cover. At 6pm, the bride arrived and it began to rain,

not much but enough to settle the dust……. and

MIRACULOUSLY the change brought an instant

decrease in the temperature which dropped to a com-

fortable 28 degrees and the wind completely disap-

peared. Sophie was totally calm and was actually

laughing when she arrived and said she did not want to

delay the service because of a few drops of rain.

Looking a picture of loveliness in a soft pink-toned

gown, Sophie emerged from the navy blue bridal ute

with a beaming broad smile. Her proud father collected

her by the arm and walked her down the aisle and as

he did the rain stopped completely. Celebrant Joy

Freeman, a special family friend, commenced the

service and as the couple exchanged vows thunder

claps cracked above. It was fabulous; the newlyweds

couldn’t have wished for more spectacular natural

elements. The thunder made everyone laugh and the weather really set the scene for a jubilant evening of celebrations.

After the ceremony, with a rural and rustic theme, refreshments were dispensed from an old rusty fridge and ringer washing tub located

under the peppercorn trees adjacent to the big old redgum and fresh lamb sandwiches with homemade relish were handed out.

Slowly people were bussed back to the marquee set up behind the farm’s shearing shed. The site was decorated with many vintage farm

implements dating back to the 1800s, old steel tractor seats bolted onto logs, a magnificent rustic water feature made especially for the

occasion by Sophie’s dad, an old wagon was used to dispense the drinks and lanterns made from old Mason jars emitted a soft warm

glow outside. With no wind and a warm night of 26 degrees, the sides of the marquee were taken down and guests mingled freely.

The evening will be remembered for its hilarious speeches, incredulous weather, ‘that water feature,’ truck loads of merriment and of

course the blissfully ‘in love’ bride and groom glowing with abundant joy all night. The newlyweds’ honeymoon involved caring for the

family farm so the folks could go on vacation. The actual honeymoon will take place later in the year involving a trip to the US to watch a

live game of baseball……among other things.

Wedderburn Country Women’s Association Our Branch is officially up and running, and we have

been enjoying some great fellowship and fun. In

October, we harnessed the skills of our member Vicki

Pfeiffer to demonstrate her considerable talent in the

culinary art of sponge making. What a great night!

Vicki shared so much useful and encouraging infor-

mation. Novices as well as seasoned sponge makers

all learned some valuable take home messages, and a

recipe sheet as well! Thanks Vicki for a great job, and I

am looking forward with confidence to entering the

sponge cake section of the Boort Show this year.

In December we had a small group meet for a

Christmas meal at the Wedderburn Hotel and once

again much enthusiastic discussion about the Branches

plans for 2015 . Our January meeting generated many

sheets of butcher’s paper full of ideas for our syllabus,

so look forward to a packed program of activities that

welcome all women from Wedderburn and the local

area.

FARMERS MARKET COMING UP. On Sunday March 8 we will be once again holding our Farmer’s Market in conjunction with an Art/Craft Market at the Wedderburn

Community Centre, 24 Wilson Street, Wedderburn. 9am – 1pm. Quality Entertainment & BBQ lunch provided.

As we have funding for the Start Up of a Farmer’s Market we are able to offer FM stallholders free sites for the first three markets. Contact us if you are not sure what you need to do to be compliant and we will assist you in any way we can. This is a great initiative for Wedder-burn and we hope it will attract people to our town while at the same time give local producers the opportunity to grow and sell their

produce locally.

done the BA course (breathing

and when the siren goes at

night I’m always concerned

and feel the responsibility. It’s a

part of my community and

small country towns rely on

their volunteers. I’m in ten dif-

ferent community groups, and

I’m President, Secretary and

Treasurer of a few!

THE MYSTERY OF THE BEARS SOLVED.

In June 2014 we built a bear from hay bales to announce the birth of our little son Josiah (Joe). The joy that Joe’s arrival has brought to

our family has been reinforced as we watched with surprise the number of cars stopping to photograph our creation and seeing our bear

pop up on the internet, television and radio. It was our intention to remove him soon after the birth, but parents told us how their children

look out for the bear with anticipation, people have given him names and he has begun to develop an identity all his own.

As Christmas approached we started to think

about continuing the bear theme, so came up

with the idea of a Santa bear and reindeer

teddy sitting around a Christmas tree.

Since the original bear appeared, the Bendigo

Advertiser have announced a hay bale

competition. There are now hay bale sheep,

Santa’s, aeroplanes, castles, Sponge Bob

Square Pants, even the Hungry Caterpillar.

Lovely time for Lichens!

The recent much appreciated rains have revived the parched and dried out lichens. Before the rain large patches of lichen

crunched underfoot making a sound like walking on cornflakes. They broke off in pieces and blew around waiting for some-

where to settle and soak up moisture when it did arrive.

Our local area has many species of lichens and mosses. These organisms show remarkable adaptation to the effects of

harsh environment and have a strong resistance to drought.

They are the primary coloniser of soil less surfaces and you can see a lot of

evidence where mining activity has stripped soil away long ago. Now there

may be several forms of lichen surviving on the bare ground and some-

times on rock surfaces.

Lichens grow very slowly, but they also dry out slowly, making the most of

being able to absorb about three to thirty five times their weight in water.

This is very important when water may only be available for short periods of

time.

So now, when a week ago a walk sounded like crunching cornflakes, now it

feels like walking on a thick brightly coloured squishy sponge.

Isn’t nature marvellous?

age sale you must register. The cost is $5.00 per garage sale and to participant it is important that you fill

Congratulations to the Lions Club who organised such a wonderful

Australia Day Event. It was the best ever. The weather was

wonderful, the organisation was terrific and the food, WOW those

pancakes....If you didn't come you missed out on a great cel-

ebration and hope it will continue each year.

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS. The Wedderburn Lions Club conducted the Australia Day celebrations in Jacka Park on a pleasant

sunny evening.

The event started at 5pm and was opened by the Lions President Barry Finch who welcomed the

Australia Day Ambassador Mr Aris Imbardelli and the Mayor, Councilor Mr Gavan Holt.

The band played the National Anthem with the raising of The Flag. We then had an informative

address by the Ambassador in front of a crowd of 150, or more, locals and visitors to our town.

After a short break the Mayor announced the Aus-

tralia Day Competition Awards to the students in

various categories, it was a pity many of the recipi-

ents were not present.

The Wedderburn Community Service Award went

to Mr Keith Ring who is involved with the Historical

Society and Co-author of “The Golden Harvest” a

history of Wedderburn. Keith has been President

of the Society and The Literary Institute and has

compiled several photos and histories of our town.

The Plaque Unveiling.

The Lions Club member David Lockhart obtained through a series of events some plaques com-

memorating the Flour Mill that was situated on Jacka Park. He gave a brief of the history of the

Flour Mill.

The stone came from David’s’ property and was installed by

the Lions Club members.

The unveiling was done by Lions members Cliffe Hannah,

Ray Tonkin, Lance Ward and Frank Canfield.

The Lions Club put on the BBQ with traditional “sausage”

followed up with pancakes and ice cream. The drinks tent

was kept busy quenching the thirst of many.

MAINLY MUSIC. An exciting new program called Mainly Music has come to Wedderburn and begins on the 24th of February 2015 at the Wedderburn Uniting Church hall at 10am and concludes at 11.30am. Started in 1990, Mainly Music is a fun music group for parents or primary

care givers to enjoy together with their young child.

Throughout the session, children develop gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, maths and pre-reading skills as well as socialise with others. Each Mainly Music is associated with and is run by volunteers from a local church. Children are introduced to music, creativity and more, plus families given a chance to think about the God-part of life. Amazing to think that all this can be

achieved in a loving, shared family environment.

Young children and their parents/caregivers join together for a fun, thirty minute music session, then afterwards enjoy snacks and refreshments in a relaxed setting. At playtime, the children are able to interact with others or read stories with their parents/

caregivers.

The Wedderburn Mainly Music team are enthusiastic about this new venture and look forward to welcoming young families to each

session. There is a small charge of $5 per family which covers morning tea, craft activities and membership costs.

GUESS WHO?

I met up with this happy chap in the library at Wedderburn College. Jacob was very excited to be collecting his books

and equipment to start school the following Monday.

It was no surprise to find him in the library as reading is Jacobs favourite past time, along with transformers and

World Wrestling Enterprise.

With the hat that Santa gave him, he claims to be the spit-ing image of WWE champion ‘The Undertaker’.

With Tanya Chalmers as his Prep teacher Jacob can’t wait to get into the classroom. But before school starts he has had a great summer at the beach where he dug a hole in the sand big enough for 8 people….He might have had a

little help from family!

Talk about funny guys, Jacob told me how he slipped at the beach and did a giant belly whacker on the sand. Boy did

he laugh at that one!

When he grows up Jacob hopes to be like his big brother Patrick. He also has a sister Kaitlyn, Mum Monique and

Dad Michael.

His name is ..Jacob Ward.
