BOOT CAMPBOOT CAMPAny youth wishing to join our unit must first complete
recruit training.
NOT U.S. Marine Corps boot camp! • Drill+customs, physical exercise, classroom instruction• Held over 9 consecutive Saturdays in Spring, 8am–2pm.• No more than 2 excused absences before being
dropped from training–Most recruits who do not complete can try again the
following Spring. 5
RECRUIT UNIFORM AND GEARRECRUIT UNIFORM AND GEAREach recruit required to wear/have:– Blue jeans (regular not baggy or “skinny”), with
belt– White T-shirt (labeled with recruit’s last name on
front and back – duct tape OK)– White crew-length socks– Black athletic shorts– Running shoes (not “skate” shoes or “high-tops”)– Hydration: Camelback™, or canteen, or refillable
water bottle– Haircut! (Male/female grooming rules will be
explained on day 1)– Small backpack for gear, notebook, chow(packed lunch, no junk food), sunscreen.

STAFF MEMBERSSTAFF MEMBERS
• Unit staff members (“Registered Adult Leaders”) and active-duty Marines are volunteers.
• Registered Adults are screened, background-checked by National HQ. Male and female registered adults must be present when supervising both genders.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: RECRUIT TRAININGPARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: RECRUIT TRAININGRecruits held accountable for attendance and
readiness to train (correct gear, grooming, and studying between Saturdays).
Parents help by ensuring that recruit:1. gets good night’s sleep and eats healthy breakfast
(avoid fatty foods)2. arrives on time – allow +10 minutes for gate security
checks. Have current license/registration/insurance with you. - Parents please leave promptly after drop-off!
3. is picked up on time (before 2pm)4. Has time for studying and physical exercise between Saturdays.

MEDICAL INFORMATIONMEDICAL INFORMATION
• For your child’s safety, you MUST tell us about ongoing or new medical issues. - All information kept confidential.
• If your child needs medication during training, please tell our training officer.– Asthma inhalers/Epi pens must be brought to training if
prescribed!• Some children have other special needs. Please
discuss with staff in advance – we will try to work with you. – Unfortunately we cannot accept every child, as our staff
are not trained to deal with all circumstances.14

• Complete information is required, including the Physical Exam form.- A current “after-school sports physical” is acceptable. CVS
and other pharmacies offer sports physicals without appointments.

Enrollment fee: $250.00 for first child in family, $225.00 per additional child
Includes:• Uniform (blouse, trousers, cover, belt, unit patch, name tapes, boot
bands, 1 green and 1 red YM T-shirt)• YM Basic Guidebook
Does NOT include:• PT Gear: black shorts (no longer than mid-knee), white crew socks,
athletic shoes.• Boots: (black lace-up “jungle” combat boots). At most military

National HQ requires re-registration for all YMs every September, along with new physical exam form (even if just graduated boot camp)
• Some activities require additional cost, e.g.– Camping trips– USS Midway overnight– Leadership schools
• Unit subsidizes some costs via fundraising. (Ask how you can help!)

AFTER RECRUIT GRADUATION: WATCH AFTER RECRUIT GRADUATION: WATCH YOUR YM GROW, LEARN, AND LEADYOUR YM GROW, LEARN, AND LEAD
• Graduates become a Young Marine Private (YM/Pvt)– entitled to wear uniform and insignia
• National Director Mike Kessler’s Challenge to new YMs: Earn promotion to Private First Class (YM/PFC) within 3 months by:– regular attendance– community service (within or outside Young Marines)– exemplifying core values: Discipline, Leadership, Teamwork
• YMs can also earn ribbons for achievements in or outside the program, e.g. CPR/First Aid, academic, music, Drug Demand Reduction education, Veterans Appreciation, ….
• Parents of graduated Young Marines welcome to observe, help staff with weekly activities, fundraising, etc. - To work directly with YMs, apply to be a Registered Adult volunteer! 21
TIMELINESSTIMELINESS• YMs, recruits held responsible for arriving on time before
0800.
• Parents – use East Gate onto base. Allow +10 minutes for gate security checks. Have current license/registration/insurance with you.
• Please pick up recruit ON-TIME before 1400 (2pm). Volunteer staff are not a day-care service!- Call us if you will be late due to unforeseen reasons (e.g.
car trouble, family emergency). - Network with other parents in advance (today!) to
carpool or provide backup rides.• Make sure Adjutant has up-to-date phone numbers. – - Keep cellphone on while your child is with us (in case
of emergency; also some events finish early).

• For uniform/equipment requests: Print and complete request form on the www.sandiegoyoungmarines.org website. Give form and payment to Supply Officer.
• We will email you and /or your child “SDYM Weekly Announcements”. Please read carefully – meeting locations, pick-up times, uniform requirements can change weekly.
