A Ministry by the students for the students
Why Student Ministry ?Future LeadersCream of the societyGreat potential and are powerful15 – 25 age group is an important period Intermediate stage between adolescence & adulthood (Identity Crisis)Critical Stage: form values and standards
Peer Pressure to conform to anythingSeek happiness (friendship, pleasure etc)
Transition stage: looking for meaning & directionOpenVulnerable: easy targets of Antisocial Elements
HOW DID IT ALL BEGAN ?
1949 – 1951 MADRAS: Prof H Enoch, a teacher of zoology in Presidency College, Madras believed that the Lord was encouraging him to raise a student movement which would be true to the Word of God shared his concern with students and senior friends from different churches in the city like Ms H Eckmann, David CC Watson, and M D Paul and later Dr T Norton Sterrett. This resulted in forming a small fellowship in his home every Friday evening which later became the MADRAS ICEU in 1951
1948 – 1951 CMC VELLORE: Early in 1948, a small gathering of about half a dozen students of CMC, Vellore, felt the need for a deeper fellowship and a great longing to start a witnessing evangelical group than what was provided by the existing Christian organization in the College SCM. God send Dr. John Moody from Australia in 1950 to be on the staff of the C M C, Vellore who started Bible studies & Prayer meetings with them.
In November 1951 Dr Sterrett paid a visit to Vellore on request by the members. He along with John Moody helped members form an Evangelical Union.
1949 – 1952 Coimbatore: D Jayapaul a student of GCT, Coimbatore had no Christian fellowship. However, he used to go out into the open field and pray that the Lord would raise up prayer cell in G C T hostel. In answer to prayer, the Lord sent H S Ponnuraj which resulted in a small prayer cell which grew up steadily. They showed the film God and Creation to all hostel students and staff. They did some outreach in the nearby colleges including the Agricultural College.
The EU in Coimbatore was formed in 1952
BIRTH OF UESI Evidence of God's leading in the fact that the
seniors and students associated with the formation of Madras, Vellore & Coimbatore Unions were entirely unaware of each other's existence until they met sometime in 1951.
The groups at Madras, Vellore, and Coimbatore which met for a retreat at Katpadi Farm near Vellore had a burden and vision not only for their own places but also for the other students in India and launched UESI as a national movement on
18 September 1954.

AIMS
1. EVANGELISM - To present the claims of Jesus Christ so that other students may come to a personal experience of Him as Saviour, Lord and God, through the new birth.
2. FELLOWSHIP - To have fellowship with all students of like precious faith for mutual help and growth in the Christian life, especially by means of Bible study and prayer, and to encourage one another in witnessing for Christ.
3. TESTIMONY - To raise in the Colleges a testimony to the truths of the historic Christian faith, and present their message for the whole of life and the problems of mankind.
4. MISSIONS - To present God's missionary command and so to help students discover and obey His will for them at home or abroad in world evangelisation.
Why AIMS ?
No person, society or organisation can have a meaningful existence or direction to progress without a vision purpose or aim to live for.
UESI has AIMS which summarize its VISION
"UESI seeks to evangelise post-matric students in India, nurture them as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, that they may serve the Church and Society".
VISION
DOCTRINES1. The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.
2. The Sovereignty of God in creation, revelation, redemption and final judgment.
3. The divine inspiration and infallibility of Holy Scripture (by which we understand the 66 books of the Bible), as originally given, and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (2 Tim 3:16)
4. The universal sinfulness and guilt of human nature since the fall, rendering man subject to God's wrath and condemnation.
5. Redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only through the sacrificial death (as our Representative and Substitute) of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God
6. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
7. The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective to the individual sinner, granting him repentance towards God and faith in Jesus Christ.
8. The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.
9. The only holy universal Church, which is the Body of Christ, and to which all believers belong.
10. The expectation of the personal return of the Lord Jesus Christ
Why Doctrines ?
UESI believe in the historic, evangelical faith based on the teaching of Christ and the Apostles which should not be compromised.
Fundamentals of our faith
Helps us to know whom we or should not associate
Held common by all Evangelical Christians
UNIQUENESS & DISTINCTIVES
OF
UESI
UESI is Bible-believing. In contrast to some who accept the Word of God "as contained in the Bible", we believe that the whole Bible is the Word of God. (2 Tim 3:16) "The Scripture cannot be broken." (John 10:35).
UESI is evangelical. The dictionary definition of this word is: maintaining "the doctrines based by some Protestant theologies upon the Gospels, such as original sin, atonement by the death of Christ, justification by faith, conversion etc. (V)
UESI is evangelistic. Our primary concern is the propagation of our faith. We believe what Jesus commanded, "Preach the gospel to every creature“ (Mark 16:15)
UESI is a fellowship of new life. We are not all trained theologians, but we do know that we have passed from death into life, that we have been 'born again' by faith in Christ crucified. (Col 3:16, 17: Heb 10:24-25)
UESI is interdenominational. Our objective is limited to win souls for Christ in the university and to strengthen those who have believed on Him. Therefore our Basis includes only those doctrines which are held common by all Evangelical Christians. Matters such as church organistation, baptism, etc. do not concern us as a group, but individuals within our groups are free to hold their own views about them. Thus our members are drawn from most branches of the Church.
UESI is financially independent. "UESI looks to God in faith and prayer for the supply of all needs. Membership fees will not be charged nor appeals made to the general public." However, financial conditions and needs will be made known periodically by the Executive Committee to the active members and to those who request for the same.
UESI is not a church. EU meetings are never meant to be a substitute for Sunday worship. EU members, especially those who study in their home town, are encouraged to help their local church or assembly.
UESI is international in its sympathies, though entirely autonomous. We are linked with similar movements internationally through the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES).
