silk, wood, terracotta, metal craft, and jute, manufactured in the NER. Though the majordrawbacks are lack of varied designs and anoverwhelming infusion of ethnic andreligious art forms, there is a consequent lackof modern marketing. Mr. Kumar explained,"as the worldwide demand accentuates greenand sustainable natural materials (people-positive and planet positive), there ought tobe a creation of a market that caters to the

aforementioned quota. For example, in Assam, there is the productionof Muga silk and Eri silk that falls under the ethnic categories.Furthermore, with the South-East Asian competitors includingPhilippines, Thailand, Indonesia being the current leading exportingcountries of handicrafts, the domestic markets are not lagging behind,as is indicated by the increase of exports in handicrafts from Rs. 386crores to Rs. 20, 000 crores in just two decades". Moreover, the sellerought to focus upon the commercial viability of the product, as itcomes in contact with the international brands that source from India, including IKEA and Zara, he added and further emphasized that Indianmarkets also ought to tap into the e-commerce retail section, forfurther coverage of handicrafts. Finally, he stressed on the hiring ofopen warehouses in the USA and establishment of the NER brand, withthe implementation of alternative selling venues, such as airports andmetros.

Leaner, cleaner and under-embellished design...

International lifestyle designer, P.J Aranador, spoke upon the two avenues for productdevelopment and design. This includes scopemethod, so as to understand the design indemand and the particular material usage, which includes a leaner, cleaner and under-embellished design. He displayed theinnovative designs produced in Philippines, including crazy weaves, utilitarian andvertebral design, modern tribal art forms, bi-color combination, storied crafts, patchwork

and implementation of laser-cut technology in the handicraft industry. He also listed the top three seller categories from the North-East Region,

Provision of sufficient capital and credit for smallartisans and entrepreneurs and emphasis on marketingquotient....

The conference was initiated by Mr. A M Singh(IFS), who mainly focused on the appropriatecommercial positioning of handicrafts of North-East. Being a resident in Meghalaya for 30 years,he spoke primarily on the question of why theNorth-East markets have not yet achieveddomestic success, that is very much due, tothem. He enumerated the two issues required toimplement the successful exposure ofhandicraft products; provision of sufficientcapital and credit for the small artisans and

entrepreneurs; and the emphasis on marketing quotient. Furtherdeliberation of these issues would help solve the domestic matter, he saidand added, in statistical terms, the domestic markets incur a loss of 100crore rupees, due to inefficient marketing intelligence. So, one ought totake the strategies and implement them as soon as possible for betterexposure towards foreign dealings.

The worldwide demand accentuates green andsustainable natural materials (people-positive andplanet positive)....

Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director, EPCH, elaborated on the North-Easthandicrafts connotation, in which importers are amazed by theuniqueness of the products resulting in their higher demand in other partsof the country. He entailed the different product kinds like, bamboo, cane,

SeminarNecessary Compliances in

Handicrafts Sector

Success in the international marketis not a matter of chance...

Mr. Ashit Kundra elaborated on how success ininternational market is not a matter of chance. In fact, the only catalyst to success is upholdingthe standards. The standards of internationalbusiness aren't limited to terms of quality andenvironment but have proceeded further totake various other issues in their ambit. Whileemphasizing the necessity to build and standtrue to the brand name, he insisted that

suppliers and risk mitigationgo hand in hand. If one is tofollow that rule rejectionlevels can even make a dropfrom 10-12% to 100ppm.Citing the economicliberalization of 1992-93 asthe reason for a surge in thecompetition, he went on toexplain the number ofstandards that sprung up invarious places. Heemphasized the need for

compliance standards by defining the multiplestandards as "good books of goodmanagement practice."

The evolution of trade standards through thepast couple of decades has moved fromBusiness to Business model to Business toConsumer and now this decade is wholly set tobe Business to Society. Resource sustainabilityissues are the forefront runners in thecompliance sector and something that can't be

compromised on.The concerns inIndustry rangingfrom wages, workers, health andsafety andenvironment onlyshow the model ofsustainability goingforward. Introducingthe Audit function ofIntertek, a globalsolution providerfirm and its systemreferred as WCA, Mr.Kundrademonstratedvarious aspect of it.WCA Reports standon 5 pillars ofassessment namelyLabor, wages, healthand safety, management system

and environment. It not only reduces thefrequent audits, but cuts down the auditfatigue. The first steptowards their solution ismeasuring the scale ofcurrent standing. Thebackbone of WCAimprovement is the initialevaluation andmeasurement. Emphasizingthe need to measure, thereare several levels that act ascomparative as well asimprovement scale. There ishowever always a list ofzero tolerance items forWCA, child labor being one of the foremost.

Detect non conformities at theearliest level of manufacturing....

Continuing with the theoretical demonstrationof WCA, Mr. Satish Gupta, Manager, Inspectionsand Technical Auditor Intertek India Pvt. Ltd.and Mr. Omprakash, Manager, Hard-line,Intertek India Pvt. Limited, illustrated themethods, several parameters throughexamples, right from regulatory parameters, tophysical characteristics and down toconstruction qualities. The main objective hereis to detect non conformities at the earliestlevel of manufacturing making WCA one of themost cost effective and time effective solutionto avoid damages and be globally capable inthe long haul.

Mr. AshitKundra, NationalSales Head -BusinessAssurance,Intertek IndiaPvt Ltd.

Mr. SatishGupta, Manager,Inspections &TechnicalAuditor, IntertekIndia Pvt. Ltd.

Presenters at this seminar, Mr. Ashit Kundra, National Sales Head - BusinessAssurance, Intertek India Pvt Ltd. and Mr. Satish Gupta, Manager, Inspections& Technical Auditor, Intertek India Pvt. Ltd. informed the participants onPre Production Inspection, During Production Inspection, Final RandomInspection, Control of Origin, In-line & Mid-line inspections for Hardgoodsand Handicrafts products, Loading Supervision, Fabric Inspection etc. Thesession also focused on Evolving Trade Standards, Social complianceWCA(Workplace Condition Assessment) and Capacity Building.

including lighting; storage, bed and bath;and kitchen & dining. He stressed upon thefact that the future of handicrafts industryrelies upon the application of product anddesign innovations.

Technological interventions, upgrades and capacity buildingfor the grass root-levelentrepreneurs...

Mr. O P Prahladka,RegionalConvenor(East),EPCH shared abouthow EPCH hasbeen passionateabout theshowcasing ofNorth-Easthandicrafts in itsinternational

shows like IHGF. Though most of theirproducts cater to the domestic markets, thereshould be technological interventions, upgrades and capacity building for the grassroot-level entrepreneurs. In other words, oneought to create entrepreneurs from theartisans to culminate in market growth. Forthe near future, he suggested establishmentof a warehouse and a showcasing facility inKolkata, which would take care of the urgentneed of collection and storage facilities, so asto cater to international demands. With theestablishment of a brand and further sub-brands from the clusters, there has to be anadded investment in the souvenir section andnew production materials as well.

Visual presentation, detailing andbranding to take NER crafts tonew heights…

Mr. Dhiraj Thakuria,Managing Director,North Eastern H &H Dev. Corp. Ltd.emphasized uponthe fact that onehas to focus on thenomenclature andbranding of theproduct before itspositioning. Headded that there

should be a promotional impetus to thecurrent marketing strategies. With arelocation of smaller faculties in the artisans'villages rather than in towns, and an addedemphasis on better visual presentation withproduct details, the creation of the North-Easthandicraft industry is bound to reach newheights in the coming years.

The discussion focused on the initiativesbeing undertaken by various agencies todevelop and promote exports from theregion. The discussions also paved way toshape a road map for developing a premierbrand for NER crafts.

Buyers Comment....Prime Interest: Lighting and

Accessories

I own Philadelphia

Estate Lighting and

Accessories,

Philadelphia, USA. I

have been a regular

visitor at EPCH fairs for

close to two decades

now and am back to

the fair after a gap of 3 years. I deal mainly in

lighting, furniture and some accessories. Other

than India, I source from China and Singapore.

At IHGF, stall organization is the best

improvement as proper directions and

signboards help reduce waste of time as one

searches for certains stalls. The products in India

are very good and the best part is they are

getting better every year. With regard to pricing,

the Indian market now has an edge as prices

are going up in China, India’s main competitor.

Eddie Mc Gowan, USA

Prime Interest: Wood crafts

I am the managing directore of Bacalor

Strategic Consulting,

Israel. This is my first

trade show visit to

India, though I have

visited shows in other

international markets

like China, Germany

and Birmingham,

England. My focus is on wood crafts and carving

as well as gifts in this category. I am quite happy

with the massive range of products showcased

in IHGF. I am overwhelmed by the intricacy of

the products and the hospitality of the

organizers. I am sure to be back next year.

Gabriel Bacal, Israel

Prime Interest: Home Decor

I am an

entrepreneur from

the US and am

engaged in the

field of product

designing, interior

designing and

architecture. I am a rookie visitor to EPCH and I

am impressed by the general feel of it all.

Other than India I buy home décor products

and textiles from China, Mexico and Singapore.

On the pricing front, textiles are seeing a

higher pricing in India. I can see that this

industry is growing bigger.

Elizabeth Hales, USA

Prime Interest: Furniture and

Accessories

I have recently

started my

business in

Johannesburg,

South Africa and

this is my first visit

to EPCH as well as

India. I came to know about the fair from the

internet. Accessories and furniture are my main

interests. I have done business in Shanghai and

Singapore in the past and I am happy to inform

that this fair has far exceeded expectations in

terms of the segmentisation. I appreciate the

way products are arranged categorically and

nothing is out of place-facilitating easy

browsing. In terms of hospitality, transportation

and hotel accommodation, all are very

comfortable. These small details are going to be

the game winner for India.

Sally Muir and associate, South Africa

Prime Interest: Fashion Accessories

I am the CEO of Le

Deure Designs which

is based in Montreal,

Canada. I am here to

buy fashion

accessories, jewellery

and bags which are

hugely popular and

highly in demand as Montreal is the fashion

hub of Canada. We have business branches

across the globe with chain stores in Europe,

Australia, US as well as India. I am based in

India acting as a link between India and Canada

as we import from India and Bangladesh only. I

feel despite slow global market, the buyers’

footfall at IHGF Delhi Fair is tremendous and

that reflects how successful EPCH has been.

This is my first time at this fair and I am positive

that I will visit again.

I Zaman, Canada

Prime Interest: Textiles for Home

This is my 4th year of

visiting the IHGF Delhi

Fair and I find it a

much better

organized, a lot bigger

affair than the last few

times. I deal in textile

home décor articles

like curtains and pillows, and generally buy from

India and China, further selling them at

wholesale in my local market in Philippines. I

prefer the products purchased from the Indian

market due to their craftsmanship, and the love

that the artisans make their articles with. It is

also the cultural familiarity with India that helps

my customer base as they can relate with the

products bought from here.

Alex Ong, Philippines
