ORCID FOR
Who we are … UniKL started out with the amalgamation of seven (7) technical institutes into a entrepreneurial technical university in 2002.
BIG QUESTION !
How do you improve the visibility and impact of your profession to society?
THINK HARD……WORK SMART
THE ANSWER…. The best way to do this is to :
• emphasize the quality of the library customer services;
• make people think differently about librarians,
• make users appreciate your value and impact that is compelling, convincing, and credible.
• the visible librarian is engaged, actively managing the relationship between institution and user to assure the highest quality results.
• Visible librarians link a bustling central hub to the community.
• It’s all about how to deliver a significant user experience; which includes the competence of staff and the diversity of library resources to measure how is the user treated and how effectively are the users’ reference needs met.
WHAT IS ORC ID?
• Acronym of Open Researcher and
Contributor ID • Was first used by Thomson Reuters for its
Researcher ID system
• Freely usable and interoperable with
other ID systems
• Using 16 character identifiers
To solve name ambiguity in scholarly communications by creating a central registry of unique identifiers and an open and transparent linking mechanism between ORCID and other
researcher IDs and research workflows ORCID.ORG

ORCID @ UNIKL
• February 2016 - PPM and MCC organized a talk on ORCID
• Presented and shared the information in the University Research committee meeting(URPC)
• Engaged with Research Center and ITD in a meeting the next month
• Highlight the benefits of ORCID in STAFOR – chaired by Dep. President Academic and Technology
• A circular was sent to all campus academicians encouraging the registration of ORCID
• Dep. President highlighted the importance of having ORCID during his academic engagements with all campuses.
• Incorporating the implementation of ORCID in upgrading the university research information systems/ research portal, it was just in time approach to be aligned with the objectives.
Issues and Challenges
Generally, academics may see ORCID as ‘another level of bureaucracy’
resulting in a degree of resistance to using it.
Early career researchers tended to see the benefits of ORCID and embrace
them more positively than established researchers and senior academics.
Academics expressed concern about duplication of effort in entering their
information into numerous different systems. They often questioned what
benefits ORCID offered over existing proprietary identifiers, such as
Thomson Reuters ResearcherID and Scopus author ID, or profiling services
such as Academia.edu and ResearchGate.
Dealing with the challenges
Developing a clear communication rollout plan for ORCID
involving a multichannel approach involving
- email communication – monthly,
- web -based guidance, in researcher portal
- training sessions (librarians be the trainers) and
- other advocacy approaches,
- working together with ITD and CORI
- and most importantly - Key to the success of the
projects is the support from the top management

Whats next ?:
1. ORCID will be integrated in our IR
2. KPI for ORCID registration ?
3. Bulk registration by the library and linking to UIR?
4. Grant management system – at a very early
review stage
5. Publication policy -will require the use of ORCID by
researchers when submitting and recording their
publications
