Mysteries, mysteries, mysteries. Was there really a masked stranger who commissioned Mozart’s Requiem? What really is Ives’ Unanswered Question? Why did Holst write only seven movements to The Planets? What is Liszt’s Les Preludes a prelude to? What door does Gwyneth Walker’s Open the Door open? Who was the Brazilian Verdi? When whales sing, what do they sound like? And what is “little” about Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony?

These and other musical mysteries will be revealed during the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra’s 2019-20 season. If you’re from my generation, it’s like Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story, only musical.

Mysterious soloists? Why does a classical guitarist only call herself Jiji? Can a bassoon really be a concerto instrument? And for that matter, what does a Brazilian bassoon concerto sound like? The bassoon from Ipanema?

Solving a mystery is a triumphant moment. Hearing great music is just as triumphant. There no mystery about the Dvorak violin concert played by John Fadial, only triumph. Guest conductor Carlos Henrique Costa’s return to the UWSO podium: equally triumphant. Witness the denouements – and the triumphs. Order your tickets now.

Jessica Caviness will take over as UWSO Concertmaster in January. She follows in the footsteps of brilliant graduate students who held that seat in the past, including one now in The Cleveland Orchestra, one who is concertmaster in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and one who is concertmaster of the Roanoke Symphony.

University funding for our Concertmaster Fellowship has dwindled over the years. To help, we are starting a new event. The Concertmaster Fund Recital will feature Ms. Caviness in a solo role, plus a few other of our very best musicians playing chamber music with her. A private dessert and champagne reception will follow. This event will be in our beautiful new Recital Hall. Seating is limited, so order your special tickets now.

-Michael Griffith Jiji is brought to you by UW Presents, with financial support from the Symphony Association and the Music Department. We are so grateful for their cooperation and assistance. Guest soloists are always a wonderful addition to the orchestra’s season.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION,This coming symphony season, we are going to be treated to a variety of music ranging from Mozart through the Romantic composers to a living American composer with an entire concert of Brazilian music added in for a little spice. This promises to be an exciting season with something for the musical tastes of every classical music lover. As an entirely volunteer, donor-supported organization, the Symphony Association for the University of Wyoming is proud to be able to play a role in supporting classical orchestral music on the high plains through student scholarships, support of student conference attendance, and contributing to special needs of the symphony orchestra as they arise. This year, we have been asked to step up our financial support of the concertmaster. In addition, there will be a special concertmaster recital the proceeds of which will be entirely dedicated to the concertmaster’s stipend listed elsewhere in this brochure. I encourage you to attend this new event. To support these special requests while still maintaining our primary focus on first-year student scholarships, we rely on you to join us in the Symphony Association with your financial support. Since the budget cutbacks at the University of Wyoming, we have been asked to do more and our donors have generously stepped forward and increased their contributions. In addition, our corporate sponsors have continued to support us with Duane Toro Real Estate subsidizing this brochure and the UniWyo Federal Credit Union sponsoring the opening concert reception. Numerous others sponsor advertising before each concert. The majority of our budget, however, relies on individual contributions. Please join us today by adding a contribution to your season ticket subscription or go to our website, www.uwyo.edu/sa, follow the “Give Online” link to the Foundation and scroll down to the UW Symphony Association under “Gift Designation.” As a member of the Symphony Association, you will receive a newsletter previewing each concert with notes from Dr. Griffith, an acknowledgment in the concert programs, and a possible tax deduction. More importantly, your contribution will bring you the satisfaction of knowing you helped bring some of the musicians you hear on stage to the University of Wyoming. We look forward to your membership in the Symphony Asociation as we anticipate another outstanding concert season. — David Perry, President Symphony Association for the University of Wyoming
