Congratulations to the players and managers of the 12 Premier team, who having lost to Templeogue Utd in last season’s national cup final, achieved success this time round when beating St Kevins 1-0 in the SFAI Norton Cup final at Jackson Park Kilternan on 14th May. Andy O’Reilly, who scored the winner in the semi-final against Malahide Utd, did it again in the final when he netted in stoppage time. There was national cup final disappointment for the 11 Premier and 14 Premier sides, however, both losing 2-0 to St Kevins and St Joseph’s respectively. Well done also to the 15 Premier team, who won the Conway Cup in a penalty shoot- out after a 1-1 draw with home Farm and the 7A and 9A1 sides, who won their leagues. And congratulations also to the Senior Sunday team, who reached the final of the FAI Intermediate Cup and won the league title, ensuring a return to the top division in the intermediate grade. l l l l l orchard news www.cherryorchardfc.ie No. 107, June 2011 THE CHERRY 12 Premier Win SFAI Norton Cup 1 Sean Whelan raises the Norton Cup

With the 2010/11 season over, I wouldtake this opportunity to thank theplayers, managers and coaches of allteams for their efforts over the season..

It was a good season with our under 9s,11s, 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s amongst themedals and the 7A team topping theirdivision. And congratulations to theSenior Sunday team for winning theleague and regaining their place in thetop division of the Leinster SeniorLeague at the first time of asking.

Again we were well represented onleague and international squads and Icongratulate those boys who wereinvolved. And, across the water, welldone to our former player Gary Dicker, who helped Brighton to win the LeagueOne title with something to spare.

This year we have five players joiningprofessional clubs in the UK. ShaneFagan (Coventry City), Danny O’Reilly(Fulham), and Lee Desmond (NewcastleUtd.) all of the 15 Premier team andDanny Rogers (Aberdeen) and Joe

Gorman (Crewe Alexandra) from our 16Premier side. I also understand thatsome of our 16 Premier players arehoping to follow in the footsteps offormer team mate David Graydon andwin soccer scholarships to colleges inthe USA – best of luck to them all.

During the close season our under 14sare heading to Galway for the UmbroCup while the under 16s are off toColeraine for the Milk Cup. Good luck boys.

Sadly, we learned of the recent passingof Tony “Musso” Wright, a fine playerfor the Orchard Seniors during the1960s. May he rest in peace.

Finally, may I, on your behalf, thank mycolleagues on both the Schoolboy andExecutive Committees for their effortsduring the past year.

Enjoy the break !!!

Des Kelly must have been up all night. The Wayside pitch was like a carpet thatwas fit for a queen. Both teamsdecorated it in the first of Saturday’sSFAI finals, the U11 Menton Seery Cup.

“We have been working with this groupnow for three years and we have beenconcentrating on first touch”, remarkedKevin’s manager, Billy McCormack. “Ithink it is important for Irish footballthat players are encouraged to get theball down and play, no matter what thecircumstances. Their attitude was spoton and we were absolutely thrilled”,reflected Billy, who manages the sidewith Willie Burke and Frank Loftus. Billyadded that “the Orchard are a fabulous

football side”. They had the celebratedEamon Collins as manager.

The Orchard midfielder, Cian Dunne, showed lovely quick feet. He was at thehear of all their best work. TheBallyfermot centre-forward JoshuaUkek, has a golden touch. He alwaysfound a shirt, while out on the left-wing, Oliver Dunne went on somecharming runs.

Overall though , Kevins dominated thepossession. Captain Dara O’Shea, didmore than pull the strings at midfield. He knitted some delicious passes as well.

The lead goal came at the clubhouse endin the 17th minute. The skilful Shane

Andy O’Reilly hit the Jackson Parkjackpot on Saturday. And not for thefirst time. His late, late goal saw theSFAI U12 Norton Cup travel joyouslyhome to Ballyfermot. It was Andy whoalso got the winner against MalahideUnited in the semi-final which went toextra-time. And on this occasion, withthe tie looking set for extra-time, hecame off the bench to pop in the goldengoal deep in injury time from inside thesix yard box at the Carrickmines end. Itwas the perfect example of being in theright place at the right time, a realstriker’s instinct.

It was the first defeat of the season forKevin’s. And it came at the end of a longweek. Last Saturday they beat the Farmafter extra-time to lift the DDSL TonyRyan Cup. And on Tuesday night, thaytwice came from behind to overcome lastyear’s U11 national champs, TempleogueUnited, in an epic semi-final on ShanowenRoad. But the double is still very much onas they can now focus on the league.

Joseph’s had the breeze in the first halfas they attacked the Carrickmines end.And two minutes in, they were ahead.Oisin Pennycooke tumbled on the leftside of the box. Aaron Byrne convertedthe penalty, low to the right corner.Orchard came more into it after that. The nearest they came to disturbing the

The second goal arrived in the 52ndminute. Gareth McDonagh delivered in acrisp free-kick and, at the secondattempt, the skilful MuhammedBukhatwa rolled the ball low straightinto the basket. The Joseph’s name wasnow written all over the trophy. Theycontinued to keep the blinds firmlypulled down as Orchard sought the goalthat might have sparked a comeback.Overall though there was no argument.

Cherry Orchard 1 Home Farm 1(Orchard win 5-4 on penalties)

It was always going to be a tight call, two of the top under 15 teams and bothwith fine defensive records. In the end ittook a penalty shoot-out to separateCherry Orchard and Home Farm in theConway Cup final.

Orchard began the brighter and almostwent a goal up after two minutes. SeanLong sped down the right flank and hiscross was met by the head of Lee Smithwho steered just wide of the target.

Home Farm enjoyed a purple periodthereafter but the closest they came toscoring was a long range Luke Kellyeffort, which Shane Fagan got his bodybehind to save. The momentum switchedand Orchard went close on 21 and 2. Apinpoint free kick from Sean Coyne

found Dan O’Reilly who rose well butwas inches wide with his header. Thenglody Nsay played a one two with EthanKeogh and only a last ditch tackle fromFarm skipper Shane Hamilton deniedNsay a certain goal.
