LA LEGGENDA DEI NANI THE LEGEND OF THE DWARVES

A due passi da Monte Berico e da Villa La Rotonda, sulle pendici del colle di San Bastian, la settecentesca Villa Valmarana ai Nani domina dall’alto uno dei panorami più suggestivi di Vicenza: la Valletta del Silenzio, il luogo che ha ispirato gli scrittori Fogazzaro e Piovene, entrambi legati alla famiglia.Nel 1720 i Valmarana, appartenenti alla nobiltà vicentina, acquistano questa casa colonica, risalente al 1669, per utilizzarla come residenza estiva e ripararsi sui colli dal caldo cittadino. Il restauro della Villa viene affidato a Francesco Muttoni, celebre architetto e studioso di Andrea Palladio. La ristrutturazione e le decorazioni della Palazzina, gli interventi sulla Foresteria, la realizzazione del Portico e della Scuderia sono, infatti, testimonianza del gusto settecentesco che riprende lo stile palladiano e la cultura classica. La Villa è attorniata da uno splendido parco, che si snoda tra aiuole di rose e carpinate, fino al giardino all’italiana con la quinta scenica ed il pozzo, custodendo scenari segreti come la pagoda nel bosco.Nel 1757 Giustino Valmarana chiede a Tiepolo, il più grande pittore del Settecento, di affrescare le sale della Villa. Giambattista Tiepolo decora così i soffitti e le pareti della Palazzina, residenza della famiglia, con i temi delle letture classiche preferite dal committente, Giustino Valmarana: il Sacrificio di Ifigenia, l’ Iliade, l’Eneide, l’Orlando Furioso e la Gerusalemme Liberata. Gli affreschi della Palazzina rappresentano l’ultimo ciclo pittorico italiano di Giambattista Tiepolo, che partirà poi per Madrid, dove affrescherà i soffitti del Palazzo Reale per Re Carlo III di Spagna.Le sale della Foresteria, riservate agli ospiti della famiglia, i foresti, vengono affidate al figlio Giandomenico, che sceglierà di affrescare gli ambienti con soggetti realistici e con riferimenti alle mode dell’epoca: le cineserie, la vita dei contadini, i nobili, il carnevale veneziano.La sala degli Dei dell’Olimpo è invece opera del padre, Giambattista. Nella Foresteria è custodito l’unico ritratto esistente di Andrea Palladio. Con i suoi 800 mq di affreschi, fra soffitti e pareti, il ciclo pittorico di Villa Valmarana è uno dei massimi capolavori di Giambattista Tiepolo, nonché l’unico luogo in cui poter ammirare l’arte dei due Tiepolo a confronto.

The 18th century Villa Valmarana ai Nani is located on the slopes of Colle di San Bastian, close to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico and Palladio’ s Villa La Rotonda.It offers one of the most striking panoramas overlooking the enchanted Valletta del Silenzio. This special setting has inspired the writers Antonio Fogazzaro and Guido Piovene, both linked to the Valmarana family. In 1720 the Valmaranas purchased the original farmhouse, built in 1669, to use it as a summer residence and enjoy the hills coolness during the warmer months. Restoration works were assigned to Francesco Muttoni, a well-known architect and scholar of Andrea Palladio. The renovation and decoration of the Palazzina (Owners’ residence), the restauration works on the Foresteria (Guesthouse), the building of the Porch and the Stables show indeed the 18th century taste for the Palladian style and classical culture. The Villa is surrounded by a magnificent park with flowerbeds and hornbeams, an Italian garden, a theatrical setting and a well; the two hundred old holms of the wood guard the statutes and the ancient frescoed Pagoda.In 1757 Giustino Valmarana called Tiepolo, the greatest painter of the 18th century, to fresco the Villa. Giambattista Tiepolo decorates the Palazzina with themes drawn from the classical masterpieces which the owner cherished: the Sacrifice of Iphigenia, the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Furious Orland and the Liberated Jerusalem.Giambattista Tiepolo’s work in the Palazzina represents his last pictorial cycle in Italy. He will then leave for Madrid, to fresco the ceilings of the Royal Palace for Charles III, King of Spain. The son, Giandomenico Tiepolo, was entrusted to fresco the Foresteria. He depicts real subjects and trends of his time: the Chinoiseries, the peasants’ life, the nobility, the Venetian Carnival. However, the Gods of the Olympus room was painted by the father Giambattista.The most famous portrait of Andrea Palladio hangs on the wall of the Foresteria’s main room.The 800 square meters of frescoes represent one of Giambattista Tiepolo’s greatest masterpieces. It is also the only place where you can admire and compare the works of both Tiepolos.

The statues of the seventeen dwarves, once located on the grounds of the park, now welcome the visitors from the top of the boundary wall. They represent the typical characters of the 18th century Italian society such as the Lady, the Knight, or the Spinner; they have inspired several popular legends. The most famous one tells the unfortunate story of the dwarf Princess Layana. She lived locked up in a castle, surrounded by her dwarf servants. In this way she was protected from knowing that she was different. One day, Layana after hearing some noise coming from the outside, decided to climb the highest tower to discover what had caught her attention. There she saw a handsome young man on horseback, riding past San Bastian alley. In that moment the princess realized that she was different and, out of despair, decided to throw herself off the tower’s castle. The dwarves, who weren’t able to protect Layana, were turned into stone by a gust of wind as a punishment for their negligence. Still today, the dwarves that stand on the boundary wall, keep an eye on the alley, guarding the Villa’s treasures.

Le statue dei diciassette nani, un tempo situate nei giardini, accolgono ora i visitatori dalla sommità del muro perimetrale. I nani rappresentano personaggi tipici della società settecentesca come la Dama, lo Spadaccino o la Filatrice, che nel corso dei secoli hanno ispirato molte leggende popolari. La più famosa racconta la sfortunata vita della principessa nana Layana, che viveva rinchiusa in un castello, circondata da servitori nani. In questo modo non avrebbe avuto contatti col mondo esterno e non si sarebbe accorta della sua deformità. Un giorno Layana, sentendo rumori provenienti dall’esterno, decise di salire sulla torre più alta. Fu allora che vide un affascinante giovane a cavallo passare sulla stradina di San Bastian. In quel momento la principessa capì di essere deforme e, colta dalla disperazione, si gettò dalla torre. I nani, che non furono in grado di proteggere Layana, vennero pietrificati da una folata di vento, come punizione per la loro negligenza. Ancora oggi i nani, posti sulla mura di cinta, vigilano sulla stradina di San Bastian, custodendo i tesori della Villa.

La Villa è aperta al pubblico durante tutto l’arco dell’anno. Con il biglietto d’ingresso è possibile visitare le tredici sale affrescate e passeggiare liberamente nel parco.Le schede cartacee, assieme alle guide multimediali, vi accompagneranno lungo tutto il percorso, offrendovi un’esperienza affascinante alla scoperta di personaggi e storie che hanno reso la Villa una pagina fondamentale dell’arte e della cultura italiana. Sono inoltre disponibili visite guidate per gruppi e percorsi didattici in linea con le esigenze di bambini e ragazzi. Tutte le domeniche alle 10.30 la Villa dà la possibilità di partecipare ad una visita guidata, senza obbligo di prenotazione.

HOSPITALITY The Villa offers unforgettable overnight stays. The Flat Nani 2 was originally the Foresteria’s old granary, restored and transformed in a large and comfortable open space of approx 150 sqm, facing the splendid Valletta del Silenzio. Ai Nani 2 is composed of three bedrooms, two bathrooms with shower and bathtub. A dishwasher, a washing machine and Wifi are also available.On the first floor of the Palazzina are situated two large, exclusive and recently restructured apartments with an amazing view. COFFEE & BOOKSHOP The old kitchens of the Foresteria have been transformed into the Caffé di Villa Valmarana, open to the visitors of the Villa as well as to anyone passing by. From the tables of the enchanting terrace you will enjoy the marvelousview both of the 18th century façade of the Scuderia and of the Valletta del Silenzio, where the solemn Sanctuary of Monte Berico stands. In addition to the bar service, lunches under the Porch and celebrations of special events can be organized.The opening hours of the Caffé may change according to season, as indicated on our website.

The bookshop is situated in the Palazzina’s basement. Gli antichi locali delle cucine della Foresteria oggi ospitano il raffinato Caffè di Villa Valmarana, aperto a chi visita la Villa e chi arriva in passeggiata. Dai tavolini della sua incantevole terrazza si può godere la meravigliosa vista sulla facciata settecentesca della Scuderia e sullo splendido panorama della Valletta del Silenzio, dove si staglia solenne il Santuario di Monte Berico. Oltre al servizio bar, su prenotazione, è possibile organizzare pranzi sotto il Portico o feste per occasioni particolari. Gli orari del bar cambiano a seconda della stagione, come indicato sul nostro sito.

Il piano seminterrato della Palazzina ospita il Bookshop che offre pubblicazioni esclusive su Villa Valmarana ai Nani, Andrea Palladio, le Ville venete e la città di Vicenza in diverse lingue. Arricchiscono l’offerta cartoline, puzzle, calendari e preziose stampe che riproducono le scene più belle degli affreschi dei Tiepolo, oltre a oggettistica, prodotti enogastronomici selezionati e di artigianato locale. OSPITALITÀ

La Villa offre la possibilità di pernottare all’interno della proprietà. Il grande appartamento Nani 2 si trova sopra la Foresteria ed è ricavato dall’antico granaio, da poco restaurato. È un ampio open space, per sette persone, dotato di ogni comfort, con grande salotto, una ricca libreria, cucina attrezzata, tre camere da letto, due bagni con vasca e doccia, di cui uno affrescato. WiFi, aria condizionata e una splendida vista sulla Valletta del Silenzio completano l’accoglienza. Al primo piano della Palazzina si trovano due ampi ed eleganti appartamenti, anch’essi recentemente ristrutturati, da cui si può godere di una magnifica vista. Suite Achille e Suite Ifigenia sono arredate con preziosi mobili originali d’epoca, per poter rivivere il fascino autentico dell’atmosfera unica di questa antica dimora nobiliare. Sono entrambe arricchite da moderne finiture di pregio e dotate di ampia cucina, bagno privato con decorazioni a mosaico e vasca idromassaggio, per poter garantire agli ospiti un’esperienza di comfort e relax totale.
