1 Getting startedThank you for your purchase of the VITA Easyshade Compact precisioninstrument which provides accurate shade determination for naturaldentition and a variety of restorations.The instrument can measure a broad range of shades, includingVITA Linearguide 3D-MASTER, VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER includingthe BLEACHED SHADE GUIDE shades and VITAPAN c1assical A1-D4 shades.VITA Easyshade Compact also measures 3D “interpolated shades,” whichare intermediate shades achieved by mixing two or more porcelains together.For accurate shade matching results, please read these instructionscompletely before using your instrument.

Place the base unit on a flat surface.Insert the Easyshade Compact hand piece into the baseunit so that the battery charging port fits overthe charging pins.
1.3 System setupOpen the VITA Easyshade Compact shipping containerand remove the operating instructions, the CD-Romwith the Operating Instructions and LabRX,the Easyshade Compact hand piece, base unit withcalibration holder and power supply.Remove the power supply from the cardboardcontainer and insert the appropriate universalwall plug into the power supply.
The hand piece and the calibration holder will havethe same serial number (fig. 1); if not, contact VITAimmediately. The base unit may have a differentserial number.

2 1.4 Battery chargingPlug the power supply into an appropriate power source usingone of the supplied universal wall plugs.Insert the plug into the base unit (fig. 2).
The green LED battery charging indicator light is lit when the batteryis charging (fig. 2). Let the battery of the hand piece charge for a minimumof five hours before initial use.
1.5 Applying an anti-infection coverIt is important to properly clean and disinfect the instrument betweenpatient uses and to use a new VITA Easyshade Compact anti-infection coverfor each patient to prevent patient cross-contamination.
The anti-infection cover also protects the fiber optics in theprobe tip from damage.

Verify that the anti-infection cover is stretched uniformly and flatly overthe face of the probe tip and that the cover has not torn during application(fig. 3-5).
The anti-infection cover should remain in place for all measurementswith the same patient, unless re-calibration is necessary as indicatedin section 1.7.3.
These non-sterile covers are for single patient use only and should beproperly disposed of.
Note: An anti-infection cover that has come into contact witha patient must not contact the calibration block assembly.If this occurs, follow the instructions for cleaning and disinfectionof the calibration block assembly in section 8.

1.6 Power-onTurn on VITA Easyshade Compact by pressing and holding the measurementswitch on the top of the unit or any of the display switches for two seconds.As long as the hourglass icon is displayed, the unit is not ready for use.When the blinking calibration icon is displayed, VITA Easyshade Compactcan be calibrated (see section 1.7.1).
1.7 CalibrationThe unit may only be calibrated with a new anti-infection coverin order to prevent patient to patient cross-contamination.
1.7.1 Automatic calibrationIf the base unit is connected to the mains supply, the calibration procedureis carried out automatically.
Place the instrument in the calibration holder so that the probe tip is flushwith and perpendicular to the calibration block and depresses the calibrationswitch (see adjacent figure, anti-infection cover not shown).Make sure that the hand piece is fully seated in the calibration holder.
A green light in the center of the base unit is lit and shortly afterwardsthe hand piece probe will illuminate the calibration block (fig. 8).
A triple “beep” indicates the end of the calibration process.
Note: When the calibration icon is blinking, the hand pieceswitch will not function; measurements can not be carried out.Before carrying out any measurement, the unit must be calibrated.If power is not available to the base unit, the unit must be calibratedmanually (section 1.7.2).

After successful calibration, the measurement menu is displayed (fig. 9)and the unit is ready for use. The measurement used last is highlightedand activated after pressing the Enter key.
If a single “beep” sounds, the adjacent screen (fig. 10) anda corresponding error number will be displayed (see section 12.4).Calibration has failed and should be repeated.
Note: Make sure not to block the IR ports located on thehand piece and the base unit (see adjacent figure).
Avoid placing the unit in the vicinity of a powerful light source(such as sunlight or an incandescent light), which may interferewith the signal transmission between the base unit and the hand piece.

12 1.7.2 Manual calibrationThe instrument can also be calibrated when a power source is notavailable for the base unit. For this purpose select the calibration iconin the Setting menu which is accessed from the toolbar icon in theMain menu (see section 12.3 Menus).
Place the hand piece in the calibration holder and press the hand pieceswitch to activate the calibration procedure.
The green light in the base unit will not illuminate.
Note: VITA Easyshade Compact is pre-calibrated at the factoryfor the calibration block that is shipped with the instrument.If you own more than one VITA Easyshade Compact, care must be takennot to switch calibration blocks between VITA Easyshade Compact units,which may adversely affect the accuracy of measurements.
Make sure that the serial number on the hand piece matchesthe serial number on the calibration holder (see section 1).
1.7.3 Monitoring the calibrationDue to environmental changes or after repeated use, it may be necessaryto re-calibrate the instument when performing repeated measurements.A blinking calibration icon, as indicated in figure 13, indicates thatthe instrument must be re-calibrated.
Re-calibration should be performed as soon as possible.If immediate re-calibration is required, error no. 106 will be displayedand the instrument will need to be re-calibrated before additionalmeasurements can be made (see section 12.4).

3 Measuring a toothThe instrument may be used to measure a single area on a tooth(“Tooth single”) or to measure the cervical, middle and incisal areas(“Tooth areas”) as described in section 4.
Procedure to perform accurate measurements withVITA Easyshade Compact:
The probe tip must be placed perpendicular and flush to the tooth surfaceas indicated in the adjacent figure (fig. 15).
For purposes of illustration, the probe tip is shown without an anti-infectioncover.
The probe tip must be placed on an area of the enamel surfacethat has underlying dentine.
While holding the probe tip steady against the tooth,press the Measurement button until three rapid “beeps” can be heardto indicate completion of the measurement.
VITA Easyshade Compact will display the results of the measurement.

17 Incorrect placement – incisal (fig. 17):Probe tip must be a minimum of 2 mmfrom the incisal edge.
Incorrect placement – cervical (fig. 18):Probe tip too close to gingival tissue.Maintain a minimum distance of 2 mm to the tissue margin.
If the probe tip is moved off of the tooth prior to the instrumentsounding a “beep”, an error message or an erroneous measurementwill be displayed and the measurement will need to be repeated.
Note: Prior to measuring a tooth, an anti-infection cover must beapplied to the VITA Easyshade Compact probe and the instrument mustbe calibrated. It is recommended to remove any stains from the surfaceof a tooth prior to measurement. It may be required to wipe the toothwith gauze to prevent the tip from sliding. The probe tip must be placedentirely on the natural tooth. Any contact with existing restorationsmust be avoided. Underlying restorations may adversely affect themeasurement result.

19 4 Modes of operation
4.1 Single tooth modeTo measure the base shade of a tooth, highlight and selectthe Tooth single icon on the Measurement menu and confirmby pressing the Enter button. Place the probe tip on the uppermiddle third of the tooth and press the measurement switch.
The measurement results will be displayedon the screen of VITA Easyshade Compact:
The closest interpolated VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER shadeis displayed.
Both the VITAPAN classical A1-D4 and theVITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER shades are displayed.
A detailed description of these screenscan be found in sections 6.1 and 6.2.

When more than one VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade is indicatedon the screen, the shade with the largest font is the closestVITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade and the nearest neighborVITAPAN classical A1-D4 shades are indicated with the small font(see fig. 21).
4.2 Tooth areas modeTo measure the cervical, middle and incisal shades of a tooth,highlight and select the Tooth area icon on the Measurement menu.
Measurement sequence: cervical, middle and incisal.
To begin, place the probe on the cervical area of the tooth andpress the measurement switch. Three rapid “beeps” will indicatea successful measurement and “OK” will be displayed.
Proceed with the measurements of the middle and incisal areas.

26 After successful measurement of all areas, the VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTERand VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade results will be displayed.
If an error occurs during measurement, a long “beep” will soundand an “X” will be displayed in the measured tooth area (not shown).Repeat the measurement of the area until a successful measurementresult is obtained.
To receive extended color information, highlight and select oneof the displayed shade results. Refer to section 6.2 for a detaileddesciption of the results.
4.3 Restoration modeVITA Easyshade Compact enables dental professionals to extra-orallyverify that a restoration's shade is an acceptable match to the prescribedintra-oral shade. Both the 52 VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER interpolatedshades and the 16 VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shades can be verified.
To verify a restoration, highlight and select the Restoration iconon the Measurement menu and press the Enter button.
The target shade is selected before measuring the restoration.

29 Use the arrow buttons and the Enter button to selecta VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER or VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shadeas illustrated in the adjacent screens.
The arrow buttons are used to switch between the value,hue and chroma groups of VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER.
The Enter button is used to scroll within each value,hue and chroma group.
Note: To verify a restoration, only the base shade of the restorationis measured in the middle third of the restoration.The ceramic material must have a minimum thickness of 0.8 to 1.5 mmto ensure accuracy of the measurement. Very translucent all-ceramicrestorations, such as veneers, will require the application of atooth-colored material, such as VITA Simulate, to obtain accuratemeasurement results.
Once the target shade is selected, measure the middle third of the restoration.
The degree to which the restoration matches the target shade is indicatedby 1 to 3 asterisks, as shown in the following figures.

33 *** ”Good” means that the base color of the restoration haslittle or no color difference from the target shade to whichit has been verified.
** ”Fair” means that the base color of the restoration may havea noticeable but acceptable difference from the target shadeto which it has been verified. However, this may not be acceptablefor an anterior restoration.
* ”Adjust” means that the base color of the restorationhas a noticeable difference from the target shade to whichit has been verified, and that the restoration should be adjustedto be an acceptable shade match.
For extended color information, highlight and select the asterisk field.Refer to section 6.3 for a detailed description of the results.
Press the Enter button to return to the “Verify restoration” screen.

36 4.4 Training modeTo learn how to use VITA Easyshade Compact, it is useful to practiseusing the instrument by measuring VITA Linearguide 3D-MASTER,VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER or VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade tabs.
To measure a shade tab, highlight the Shade tab iconon the Measurement menu.
Hold the probe tip steady on the middle of the shade tab and pressthe measurement switch until three rapid “beeps” can be heard,which indicate completion of the measurement.
The measurement result with the closest shade match as determinedby the instrument is displayed on the screen.
Use the Classical and 3D-MASTER icons to switch betweenthe different shade systems.
If the probe tip is not held steady or is partially off the shade tab,a measurement error will be displayed on the Measurement screen.
For purposes of training, repeat the measurement until a correct resultis displayed.
Note: The 29 VITA Linearguide or Toothguide 3D-MASTER shadesand the 16 VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shades are displayed in the training mode.Measuring other shade guides or interpolated VITA shade tabs will producedifferent (possibly inaccurate) results. Due to the small difference in the colorand the natural color variations of the shade tabs, even slight changes inthe measurement process may lead to the fact that a nearest “neighbor shade”is displayed for some shades.

5 Recording the resultsThe instrument has a memory capacity to store 25 successfulmeasurements in the order in which they were made.Each set of tooth area measurement is stored as one result.
The Record icon is located on the lower left of theMeasurement menu screen.
When recording measurement results, a bar will be displayedwithin the Record icon. The length of the bar indicates the numberof measurements stored. Directional arrows allow navigationwithin the recorded data.
Once the maximum number of measurements is stored,the number 25 will flash. If additional measurement results are added,the value of position 25 will be replaced with the last measurement value.The first 24 measurement values will not be changed.
It is recommended to delete results before reachingthe number 25 position.
To delete results, highlight and select (Enter button)the Record icon on the Setting screen (see appendix 12.2 Icons).To avoid accidental deletion, the Record icon must be highlightedagain and the data in the memory will be deleted after pressingthe Enter button.

6 Extended color information
6.1 VITAPAN® classical A1–D4 shadesThis screen indicates the distances in color space betweenthe measured area of the tooth and the closest matchingVITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade.
The bars graphically indicate the color distances.
L +/- The tooth's value is higher/lower than theVITAPAN classical A1–D4 shade.
C +/- The tooth's chroma is higher/lower than theVITAPAN classical A1–D4 shade.
h +/- The tooth's hue is yellower/redder than theVITAPAN classical A1–D4 shade.
6.2 VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER® shadesThis screen displays the L*C*h* *a*b color coordinatesin the CIEL*a*b color space for the measured area of the tooth.

8 Cleaning and disinfectingAfter each patient use, the hand piece and base unit should be cleanedwith a dental surface disinfectant wipe (such as MetriWipes®,Sani-Cloth® Plus, Sani-Cloth HB®, or Asepti-Wipe®).The recommended surface wipes are based upon quaternaryammonium compounds.Please follow the manufacturers' instructions for use.
If iodine, phenyl phenol-based products or isopropyl alcohol are usedto clean or disinfect VITA Easyshade Compact, permanent discolorationand/or cracks may result which are not covered by the Product Warranty.
Note: The dentist or health care provider should followthe CDC's recommendations for universal precautions duringthe use of VITA Easyshade Compact.
VITA Easyshade Compact may only be calibrated with a new anti-infectioncover. In the event that the calibration block becomes contaminated,the calibration block including holder must be removed from the base unit andsterilized using a steam autoclave in accordance with the instructions of themanufacturer of the sterilizing agent. Do not use a “heat only” autoclave.
While holding the base unit with one hand,turn the calibration block holder 1/4 turn anticlockwise to remove itfrom the base unit (fig. 50).

9 Automatic power offAfter twenty minutes of inactivity, VITA Easyshade Compact turns off auto-matically (automatic power off) to save battery energy, unless the instrumentis connected to a computer via a USB cable.Press any switch to return to the Calibration screen.The unit must now be re-calibrated with a new anti-infection cover priorto performing new measurements.
To manually power off (turn off) the instrument, select the Power officon on the Settings screen (see appendix 12.2 Icons).The power off function is not available if the unit is connectedto a computer via a USB cable.

Consistently inaccurate shades aredisplayed when testing on shade tabs

Charge the battery as described in section 1.4.
Make sure that the probe tip is correctly placed into the calibrationblock holder and held at an angle of 90° and is not lifted before hearingthe “beep”, which indicates completion of calibration.Reposition the probe tip as needed. Make sure that the IR portsof the base unit and the hand piece are not blocked (see section 1.7.1).
Make sure that the correct Measurement mode icon (see section 4)is highlighted on the Measurement screen.Make sure that the instrument is calibrated in accordance with section 1.7.1.
Either the color is outside the known range of dental shades,the probe tip was not correctly positioned or was lifted or movedduring the measurement. Measure again; be careful to use properplacement technique.
Make sure that Easyshade is in Shade Tab mode.Make sure that the calibration block and the probe tip are clean;then re-calibrate the unit. Use only approved VITA Easyshade Compactanti-infection covers. Repeat the measurement, assuring that the probe tipis touching the surface at 90° in the middle of the shade tab andthat the probe tip is not moving during the measurement.Verify that the correct calibration block for VITA Easyshade Compactis installed. Make sure that only VITA Linearguide or Toothguide 3D-Masterand VITAPAN classical A1-D4 shade tabs are used.
This indicates a temporary change to the instrument, due to environmentalfactors, such as static discharge or disconnecting the battery.Turn the unit off and on again; the letter will not be displayed.
