Mission: (1) create a trusted archive of important scholarly literature, and (2) to extend access to that archive as broadly as possible.

Originally conceived as a demonstration project at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1994

Established as an independent not-for-profit organization in August 1995

Initially a pilot project (University of Michigan) to provide electronic access to the backfiles of ten journals in two core fields, economics and history

Offices in New York City and Ann Arbor, Michigan USA

What Is ARTstor?• A not-for-profit organization created by The Andrew W.

Mellon Foundation that is developing a digital library of images to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and humanities

– A repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data;

– The tools to actively use those images; and – A restricted usage environment that seeks to balance the rights

of content providers with the needs and interests of content users.
