Open Learning Analytics – the story so far

2011 – “integrated and modularized platform”“Proposal to design, implement and evaluate an open platform to integrate

heterogeneous learning analytics techniques”

Interpretation = a template for action

2014 – “knowledge domains” and “OLA Network”1. Open Data and Models2. Open Research3. Open-Source Software/Platforms4. Open Strategy and Policy5. Open Learning Designs

Interpretation = conceptual divide and conquer

See http://bit.ly/OLANetEU14 for more background

Open Learning Analytics – next chapter?

2015 – frameworks, scaffolding + network ? – Concrete, bottom-up practical action– Finding synergy in diversity– Coordinating activity to realise synergy

Anticipation = a productive commons

Aims for today:– Extend the community– Continue to develop the concept of OLA– Find synergies– Take steps to practical action (tentative or firm commitments)

OLA Knowledge Domains

• Open Data and Models– Releasing data sets and models under open licenses

• Open Research– Publishing research in open-access journals

• Open-Source Software/Platforms– Open software, standards and APIs

• Open Strategy and Policy– Open documents on strategy and policy

• Open Learning Designs– Combine LD, OER & LA to create new models of learning

Based on summary from “Open Learning Analytics panel” at Open Education Conference 2014 (J. Baron, S. Håklev , N. Bier)

From the Call to Participate

• Open, with processes, algorithms, and technologies being accessible and changeable.

• Transparently validated, with the technical aspects, usability, and effectiveness evaluated, and the results and methodology captured in an intelligible format.

• Modular to support the development and integration of “best of breed” components. ... integrated into diverse learning platforms.

• Standards-based to reduce the barrier to modularity and aid incremental adoption.

Horizon 2020 – ICT-20Specific Challenge: ... an industry-led approach in close cooperation

with academia to defining the frameworks and interoperability requirements for the building blocks of a digital ecosystem for learning (including informal learning) that develops and integrates tools and systems that apply e.g. adaptive learning, augmented cognition technologies, affective learning, microlearning, game-based learning and/or virtual environments/virtual worlds to real-life learning situations. ... better use of educational cloud solutions, mobile technology, learning analytics and big data, and to facilitate the use, re-use and creation of learning material and new ways to educate and learn online.

Group Task 1

Explore the dimensions of Open and the nature of an open learning analytics ecosystem

• What makes for Open Learning Analytics?• What would comprise a digital ecosystem for learning?• What role would learning analytics and big data have in such an

ecosystem?

Mode of group work• Not sector-specific• Brain-storming exploration• Identify key points of agreement (*)

Group Task 2

Explore ideas for practical action in OLA• What project objectives for 2-4 year time-scale?• How to achieve these objectives?

– E.g. Strategy, tactics, expertise mobilised, ...

• How to develop OLA as a means of coordinating action?– Social/documentary/architectural/technical? “infrastructure”

Mode of group work• Variously sector-specific• Before coffee, brain-storming exploration• After coffee break, sort and prioritise, develop ideas a little

What Next?

• Already in planning– First Annual Open Learning Analytics Hackathon

March 16/17, 2015, at LAK15http://lak15.solaresearch.org/hackathon

• Ideas– Webinar in Jan 2015, to take key summit points to wider audience

(volunteers to present needed)

• What do you think?– Infrastructure (social, documentary, technical?) for coordinated action?
