You’ve got the world at your feet

Apprentice Technical EngineersThere are big, bright possibilities out there for people like you. So why not make the most of them with British Gas? Our apprentices mean the world to us. Many of our senior managers started off as apprentices and our investment in training and retaining our people means that nearly 92 percent are still with us five years after joining. That’s why we’re proud of our commitment to support National Apprenticeship Week again this year.

At our award-winning academies, we’ve got a wealth of resources to help you become a Technical Engineer. Working in either Service and Repair or Central Heating Installation, you’ll get classroom-based learning as well as on-the-job training with local, qualified Mentor Engineers. So there’ll always be someone experienced on hand

to answer your questions and give you the support you need. Don’t worry if you don’t live near one of our academies, as we can provide accommodation if necessary.

As far as the basics are concerned, you’ll need at least four GCSEs, grade C or equivalent. By the end of the course, you’ll also need to hold a full UK driving licence. If you haven’t learned to drive already, we’ve teamed up with the AA to offer discounts on lessons. Once qualified, you’ll be responsible for running your own day, so you’ll need to be customer focused and self reliant.

More and more, employers are looking for people with the right skills to do the job. Work-based learning, like an Apprenticeship, is a great way to start a career, earn qualifications and get paid...all at the same time!

Page 8: Open Doors LO

If you know what career you want to pursue, why not start working towards it? Work-based learning is a great way to learn the exact skills needed to do your job. You earn a nationally-recognised qualification, like an NVQ, which all employers value. In addition to industry-specific work, you’ll also learn important transferable skills like communication skills, teamwork and how to meet deadlines.

Work-based learning courses are designed to fit around you and your employers needs. This means you could agree with your employer to leave work to study one day a week at college, attend workshops or take up evening classes.

ApprenticeshipsOne of the most popular types of work-based learning is an Apprenticeship, which lets you learn while working and earning money. Apprenticeships are a recognised route into most sectors.

There are more than 180 Apprenticeships available in over 80 sectors including Business, Engineering, Media and more. Apprenticeships can lead to qualifications like an NVQ, a BTEC qualification, or National Certificates. They can take anywhere from one to three years to finish – it all depends on which one you decide to take.

To be qualified for an Apprenticeship, you can’t be in full time education and have to be at least 16 years old. You can find out everything you need to know about Apprenticeships here: www.apprenticeships.org.uk.

Foundation degreesThis is a higher education vocational work-based qualification that helps you build up your practical skills and knowledge in the workplace. You don’t need the traditional qualifications to do one.

work it!Work-based learning gives you the chance to learn and earn – and give your career a real headstart

tfStIf you’re already working but your job doesn’t offer training, you could be eligible for something called Time Off for Study or Training (TfST). You can qualify if you are 16 or 17 and did not get any Level 2 qualifications at school (like GCSEs at grades A*-C or NVQ Level 2).

TfST entitles you to reasonable paid time off during normal working hours to study or train for an approved Level 2 qualification that will help improve your future employment prospects.

What’s my career? It’s okay if you haven’t figured out what you want to be when you grow up yet. If you’re unsure about a career, you don’t have to take the plunge into an Apprenticeship. Here are some good ways to explore careers while keeping your options open.

• 14-19 Diplomas – these qualifications are linked to 14 broad sectors. A mixture of classroom time and work experience, the Diploma gives you the knowledge and skills needed for a sector of work and can open up other options too.

• Foundation Learning – these manageable courses help you figure out what you want to study, and how you want to study it. All courses are at entry level or Level 1 and gives you the grounding to move up to Level 2 qualifications.

• Work experience/volunteering – an easy way to test out a career is to try it out for a week. Volunteering and work experience give you first hand knowledge of what a job is really like – it can help you make a decision.

What’s on offer? There’s so much you can learn, from engineering to hairdressing. Find

out what courses and qualifications are available in your area with your

local 14-19 prospectus. It’s on page 52...

What’s your style?Everyone has a different learning style. Some people like

studying books while others prefer hands on learning. It’s

important to choose the type of learning that suits you!

There are three main types:

Work-based learningReady to start working? This type of learning involves

on-the-job practical training and work towards a nationally

recognised qualification, like an NVQ. You usually get

assessed through observation while you work.

Example: Apprenticeship

Vocationally-related learningIf you want a little bit of everything, this type of course is a

mixture of hands on learning, classroom learning and work

experience. You’ll get assessed through coursework, tests

and exams. Example: Diploma

Academic learningComfortable in the classroom? Academic learning is

studying the theory of a subject and can involve projects,

fieldwork or experiments. You’ll be assessed mainly on

written exams, plus some coursework.

Example: A levels

Choosing your course

Make sure you pick the right course by asking yourself questions like:

• what am I good at?

• what subjects do I enjoy?

• do I want to try something new?

• do I prefer lectures or practical workshops?

• where will the course lead? Does it fit in with my future plans?

Where can I study? There are different options, each with its own structure, atmosphere and courses on offer.

• Sixth forms You could study at your own school’s sixth form or branch out to a sixth form college. Sixth form colleges are usually bigger and more laid back than school sixth forms – plus, you’ll have the chance to meet new people.

• Further education colleges These can offer similar courses to sixth form colleges. Your fellow students may include adults of all ages as well as young people.

• Specialist colleges Some further education colleges specialise in particular areas, such as art and design, agriculture or drama.

experience of a lifetimeVictoria GrincisinaCourse: BTEC National Diploma in Forensic Science

City and Islington College

Victoria Grincisina had always been

interested in the Police Service and the

tremendous contribution of the criminal

justice system to our society, which is

why she enrolled on a BTEC National

Diploma in Forensic Science at City and

Islington College. Having now successfully completed

the course, Victoria is studying towards a degree in

Criminology at Durham University, where she will be

moving towards her eventual aim of having a career

working with victim support and crime prevention.

“City and Islington has excellent facilities, including

state-of-the-art science equipment. I thank the

College for all the help, support and opportunities it

has provided me with.”

Victoria didn’t just benefit from the high academic

standards demanded by City and Islington, she also got

involved in many extra-curricular activities organised by

the College and its Student Union. One of the highlights

of her time at City and Islington was the opportunity to

take part in a five week expedition to India.

She was one of a group of 21 young people who

took part in a Raleigh expedition in Kerala, Karnataka

and Tamil Nadu, joining volunteers from around the

globe to work on a project in a remote, rural Indian

community. The expedition not only helped the

villagers but also gave the students including Victoria

the chance to develop their self-confidence, and

leadership and team skills.

Fellow City and Islington student and Raleigh

expedition participant, Bijal Chandaria, said “Our

modern luxuries were taken away and we had outdoor

toilets and showers, and learnt how to build our own

shelters from tarpaulins and string. At first, it was tough

but you learnt to adjust, it was amazing as everyone

comes together and helps each other out. This

experience has been amazing.”

brad’s a winner!Bradley Smith, 20, began his first course at London College of Beauty Therapy in 2006 when he was just 15. After finding school difficult, he came to LCBT one day a week on a Schools Programme, designed to focus his studies while learning new beauty therapy skills, something that has always been of interest for Bradley. He said “The schools programme gave me the foundations I needed to do everything I have done since. I don’t feel I would have had the same experiences if I hadn’t enrolled on the programme at LCBT.”

In 2008, Bradley returned to LCBT to gain his Level 2 NVQ in Beauty Therapy after working in the industry for a year as a salon junior. He wanted to be sure that he was making the right decision and to get a feel for what it would be like as a fully qualified therapist.

This year Bradley completed his Level 3 NVQ Beauty Therapy and went on to win the Pride of LCBT Award at the LCBT student awards ceremony as his determination to succeed at college and within the beauty industry has been inspirational.

“Before starting at LCBT I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with myself and would probably have ended up without any skills or qualifications. I am now at University studying Beauty Salon Management and without my NVQs this would not be possible.”

When Bradley finishes his degree, he hopes to open his own salon.

a world of opportunity for billie

Billie, 18, attained a

number of GCSEs when

she left school. She was

unsure of what she wanted

to pursue as a future

career, so she decided

to take up A levels in

college. During her first

year, she realised that

further education was not

for her and she wanted a

more direct way to achieve

her career in a business

working environment.

Billie found information about TNG on the

apprenticeship scheme whilst searching on the

internet. She applied for the Business Administration

role and began in April 2010. Billie has a great deal

of responsibility as an apprentice; on a daily basis

she undertakes a variety of important tasks that

includes updating and editing information in the

database system, phoning customers, researching

information for colleagues and sending out welcome

and achievement letters to learners.

Since starting the course she has gained a lot of

knowledge about the company as well as achieving

her apprenticeship Level 2 in September 2010. The

apprenticeship course has also enabled Billie to

gain more confidence and experiences. She plans

to accomplish her Level 3 Business Administration

Advance by 2011, through the help of TNG to further

enhance her skills and area of responsibilities.

Billie says, “Doing an apprenticeship with TNG

opened up a world of opportunity.”

i did it and i loved it…Safra Siddique followed her dream of becoming a Montessori Teacher.

My country of origin, Sri Lanka, is highly influenced by Montessori. I attended a Montessori nursery as a child and there are lots of Montessori schools on the island.

Montessori is the world’s largest global education system. There are over 600 UK nurseries and 22,000 worldwide. It is a holistic, child-centred approach to education and enables the child to learn independently, at his or her own pace. The resources in a Montessori classroom are beautiful and the atmosphere is breathtaking.

I am studying in London at Montessori Centre International. It offers a new Montessori Foundation degree and means I graduate with a Montessori specialism. The qualification is dual which means you have a level 4 and 5 qualification (CWDC). It is in partnership with London Metropolitan University. After completing the two year course at MCI, I will study at London Metropolitan University on the BA (Hons) degree course in Early Childhood Studies.

The Foundation degree is full-time. You are in college three days a week and a Montessori nursery for two days. There is college, coursework and written and practical exams. Being in a Montessori nursery is an essential part of the course, as working with children gives you hands on experience and allows you to put all your Montessori theory into practice.

I have made lots of friends on the course and all the tutors here are friendly and helpful.

Montessori teachers are in greater demand today than ever before! The qualification is international so there is opportunity to live and work abroad.

graduate of holts academy and stone setter for celebrity jewellery designer shaun leaneStephen Webb, an NVQ graduate was recently rewarded with a five-year Goldsmiths’ Company apprenticeship as a stone setter with Shaun Leane, one of the UKs most innovative designers who has designed and made jewellery for high profile celebrities like Danni Minogue and Cheryl Cole.

Designed by the jewellery industry, for the jewellery industry, Holts Academy has a wealth of experience in training the trade’s next generation of talent. This is what attracted Stephen Webb to join the NVQ Level 2 Jewellery Manufacture programme.

Throughout his studies he used a wide variety of precious metals including silver, gold and platinum. He learnt various processes of jewellery manufacture, including wax carving, polishing and stone setting. The course culminated in a design project that was shown at the renowned Platform Showcase in Hatton Garden, the centre of the UK jewellery industry.

“The NVQ provided me with the skills and knowledge that I needed to apply for an apprenticeship. Even before I started on the course I was most interested in stone setting and that was the part I enjoyed the most. With very few apprenticeships available now, I was able to prove my abilities by having the qualification.”

Stephen is now working with high profile jewellery designers, specialising in incorporating beautiful precious diamonds and gemstones into jewellery.

case stUdyClelia Allen, 18, is doing an apprenticeship in Business Administration

“After my A Levels I knew that I didn’t want to go to university so I decided to enrol on an apprenticeship programme at Redbridge College. I am able to work while I learn and I am learning new skills every day. I love my job as the people are so friendly, and I can’t sing my teacher’s praises enough. She is always there for me when I need help and she is very honest with all her students. “Studying for an NVQ is very different to anything I have ever done before but the course is laid out in a very simple way and my units are integrated into my daily tasks. I get to organise and prepare team meetings and learn how to use all the office equipment and programs. “If you’re not 100% sure about what you want to do after school then an apprenticeship is a great option – it’s a midway point between going to college and getting a job. You’ve still got the learning element but you’re also getting valuable work experience and getting paid for it. “The skills you learn are useful for whatever you decide to do after: you can do the college or uni thing, get a full-time job or even do a higher level Apprenticeship. It gives you options, without locking you into doing any one thing.” Want to find out more? Call 020 8548 7431.

Page 22: Open Doors LO

This diverse sector deals with the efficient movement of people and goods. It can be broken down into two major areas: ‘Transport’, which covers the people moving side of things like buses, trains, taxis, aeroplanes and the Underground – and ‘Logistics,’ which covers the movement of goods and products across the country and abroad.

The UK transport industry is absolutely huge – it employs over 560,000 people across the different subsectors. Our logistics industry is worth £14.5 billion and employs around 2.3 million people in over 195,000 companies.

Both transport and logistics industries require skilled mechanics to keep the vehicles running, drivers to operate the vehicles safely, and organised people behind the scenes keeping the whole operation running to schedule.

Here are some of the main areas within this sector:

it’s all about movement – passengers travelling from A to B, goods being transported across the country, letters being sent across town, imports arriving in our ports from other countries...it’s truly a fast-moving industry!

transport &loGistiCs

Rail transport operationsIt’s no simple feat to keep our railway network running to schedule – we need people to drive the trains, take fares, assist customers, operate the signals and more. You could work for the Underground or above ground.Earnings: Around £13,000 a year.

AirportsIt takes more than pilots to keep plane passengers safe – air traffic controllers help planes land safely and baggage handlers make sure luggage reaches the right destination.Earnings: Between £14,000 and £17,000 a year.

engineering and maintenanceTransport and logistics rely heavily on vehicles – trains, buses, aeroplanes, vans, cars and motorcycles – so the sector needs people with the skills to keep them running. You could learn how to service sections of rail or fix lorries, depending on your interests.Earnings: Between £16,000 and £19,000 a year.

Mail servicesThis deals with the collection, processing and delivery of mail and packages. The Royal Mail is the largest employer, but there are lots of other specialist mail providers like FedEx. You could sort in a processing centre or be out and about, making deliveries.Earnings: Between £12,500 and £17,000 a year.

Driving & carrying goodsThis covers the transport and delivery of goods by both light vehicles (like motorcycles and van) and large goods vehicles (like lorries). Large goods vehicle driving requires a special type of driving license. Earnings: Between £10,500 and £12,500 a year.

Warehouse & storageAn essential part of transport and logistics, this area deals with the movement and storage of goods. It involves more than just lifting and moving things around – it takes organisation skills to manage inventory and specialist skills to operate forklifts and other machinery.Earnings: Around £13,000 a year.

London focusAs the nation’s capital with millions of residents, London has an extensive public transportation sector – one that’s growing to accommodate the 2012 Games. Also, London’s logistics sector is worth about £8 billion a year and employs 5% of the whole workforce. So there’s lots of opportunities out there...

Fast facts• employs nearly 110,000 people in passenger transport• employs 220,800 people in logistics • postal services is the second largest sub-sector, employing 15% of the logistics workforce in the capital• 25,400 people work in air freight• 9,100 people work as couriers• 8,900 people work in road haulage

case stUdyPF Whitehead brings Apprenticeships back

Croydon-based PF Whitehead is one of the UK’s largest transportation logistics providers. The company recalls the days when apprentice drivers were taken on regularly but this stopped once insurance premiums increased to make the apprenticeships non-viable.

Now, thanks to SLB Logistics’ Apprenticeship Training Agency, a work placement for a young person has been found once more. Tom Coyne, 18, from South Norwood, has been carrying out warehouse and stock control duties since July and his enthusiasm and commitment has led to the firm expanding his tasks to include direct dealing with customers.

“He’s a breath of fresh air around the place. He’s a good lad who wants to work,” says managing director Peter Whitehead. “He is now learning about the whole business and how the process operates.”

Mr Whitehead says he cannot speak highly enough of the system operated by SLB Logistics which matches the apprentice to the firm, carries out all the HR tasks and pays the apprentice £95 per week.

As for Tom, he is enjoying the experience of being part of the PF Whitehead team. “I heard about this apprenticeship scheme through a friend. This is a very good place to work. I see myself staying here.”

case stUdyWorld of IT opens up for Dan

Daniel left school not knowing which career he would end up in. He was hoping for a future in football, which didn’t end up quite how he planned. He started studying at a specialist Sports College but several months later decided to leave as he felt it wasn’t suitable for him.

Unsure of what he wanted to do in life, he applied for an IT User Apprenticeship with Information Horizons in London, where he would gain a high level of knowledge, understanding and experience within both IT and business administration.

Daniel enrolled on a Level 2 Apprenticeship in order to gain a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of IT and administration. Having successfully completed this at a rapid pace, he progressed to an Advanced IT User Apprenticeship, working as an Administrator at Information Horizons.

On completion of his Advanced Apprenticeship, Daniel was offered full-time employment as Training Administrator with Information Horizons.

He said “With the help of my family, friends and the staff at Information Horizons, I was able to gain a recognised IT qualification and secure a full-time job at the end of it. I owe a lot to the people who helped me throughout the course and I now feel comfortable and dedicated to working in this environment, hopefully, for many more years to come”.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of people working together to pull off major construction projects. Whether you like physical outdoor work or drawing technical plans in the office, there is a career path to suit everyone.

Here are some of the most popular trades. You can get into all of these areas through a Construction Apprenticeship:

BricklayingOne of the most popular trades and Apprenticeships, bricklaying is about building and repair walls, using a range of materials and techniques.

PlasteringApplying wet and dry plaster finishes to constructed walls and ceilings.

Painting and decoratingApplying the finishing touch to surfaces, like wallpaper, gloss and emulsion.

Civil engineeringCivil engineering is about the design and construction of buildings and other important structures like pipelines, bridges, railways and roads. They provide technical support on construction projects.

JoineryThe building and installation of wood products, such as floors, staircases, doors and roof trusses.

ScaffoldingBuilding safe working platforms for construction workers to use when working on buildings and other structures.

SurveyingBuilding surveyors give detailed advice on the construction, design and maintenance of proposed or existing buildings.

it’s more than just bricks and mortar. the construction industry is worth billions and builds the world around us, from hospitals and houses to bridges and football stadiums. Be a part of it!

apprentiCesHip week – wHat’s it all about?(7 – 11 februarY)

What is an apprenticeship? • Apprentices are employees

within a company, and are paid a wage.

• All apprentices receive training for a specific job and gain recognised qualifications.

Key benefits: • earn a salary

• get paid holidays

• receive training

• gain qualifications

• learn job-specific skills.

You earn while you learn, gain a variety of skills and work towards nationally recognised qualifications that enable you to progress in your chosen career. And the good news is funding for over 300,000 Apprenticeships will be provided by the Government each year for the next four years.

The annual Apprenticeship Week takes place this year from 7-11 February and celebrates apprentices across the country. It is an excellent opportunity to find out more about Apprenticeships, so if you’re considering your future options and career path then why not go along to an event? At apprenticeships.org.uk you can find out what events are taking place near you.

If you decide you are interested in applying for an Apprenticeship the website also provides the opportunity to search for Apprenticeship vacancies. At any one time there are around 9000 jobs available in a variety of industry sectors on the website. You can apply for as many as you like.

Many young people consider an Apprenticeship because they want to learn on the job and earn a salary whilst still continuing to work towards qualifications. Research has shown that people with an Advanced Apprenticeship earn on average around £100,000 more over their lifetime than those with a qualification at Level 2 or below and in many cases Apprenticeships can also lead onto higher education.

MAV MUSIC - SOCIAL AND DIGITAL MEDIA APPRENTICE

MAV Music is London’s premiere music consultancy creating bespoke soundtracks for clients such as

The Club at the Ivy, the VIP Room at the O2 and the Soho House.

Mikey Vettraino, Director, recently took on apprentice Dean Case, 16, as their Social & Digital Media Assistant.

“Working in music is always something I’ve wanted to do,” says Dean. “I spotted the apprenticeship on

www.apprenticeships.org.uk and it had everything I’m interested in.

“I went straight into the apprenticeship in Creative & Digital Media Level 3 and it’s helping me so much. I’m

getting more confident and learning all the time, especially problem solving. I feel like I’m contributing a lot to the

company, which is great for my first role.” And the future for Dean? “I would love to work in this business or a

similar line of work so I’m happy that this apprenticeship will take me one step of the way.”

THE LONDON BUBBLE THEATRE - WORKSHOP LEADER APPRENTICE

Southwark based employer, The London Bubble Theatre Company was founded in 1972. The

company’s mission is to provide the artistic direction, skills, environment and resources to create

inspirational, inclusive, involving theatre. The company has five employees, including one creative and

one business administration apprentice.

Miles McDonald, 18 year old Young Apprentice Workshop Leader is delighted to have the opportunity to work,

learn skills on the job and earn while studying for qualification.

“I’m in my first year of training and I’m doing a Creative Apprenticeship as a workshop leader. I’ve definitely

learnt new skills – using drama to communicate with other people. I devise the theatre projects working with

young actors and I take the productions to local schools, colleges and also universities.

“The Apprenticeship has definitely given me the option to explore different things – I never realised working

with a theatre is so much more than just acting! I want to continue working with a theatre company.”

Advanced ApprenticeshipsDo you want the chance to gain valuable engineering skills and make a real difference to the lives of millions of Londoners?

London deserves the best transport system in the world – and at Tube Lines, we’re helping to deliver it. Our job is to maintain and upgrade the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines. We’ve done a lot in the past six years, but there’s still much to be done. That’s why we place such importance on developing tomorrow’s engineers through our award-winning Advanced Apprenticeship scheme.

An Apprenticeship is the ideal way to kick-start a rewarding engineering career. The three-year scheme includes completing a Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Engineering. Our aim is to give you hands-on experience in different parts of the business, so you’ll be constantly learning new things and gaining a wealth of practical knowledge. And with experienced engineers on hand to give you help, support and direction, at the end of the scheme you’ll be ready to move into your first role.

Commitment, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are more important than knowledge of engineering or the Underground. So if you want to make a lasting impact on London, find out more at makeyourmarkonlondon.com
