With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago – Contemporary Art Center invites artists to look at the Azorean islands from a 21st century perspective; to rediscover this territory through art.

We invite three artists to live and work for one month in one of these islands: São Miguel, Terceira, and Flores.

The selected artists should produce artistic work using the historical, social, cultural, economic, and geographic context of the islands as reference. The Contemporary Art Center will provide some information contextualizing the islands, which can be used as the starting point for the artist’s research during his or her residency.

The artist residency Terra Incógnita aims to produce a series of artistic works that will integrate an exhibition at the Arquipélago – Contemporary Art Center in June 2017.

The Museu Carlos Machado is the cultural, scientific and artistic partner of this Artistic Residency. The Museum opened its doors for the first time in 1880 and “combining our ages we assure continuity between past and future.”

Arquipélago – Contemporary Art Center has invited the international curator Carolina Grau to produce this Residency with our Contemporary Art Center. Carolina Grau will integrate the selection jury and curate the exhibition Terra Incógnita.

B) HISTORIC CONTEXTUALIZATION OF THE AZORES

AZORES: GEOGRAPHIC, GEOLOGIC AND CLIMATIC CONFIGURATION

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean at the junction between the lithospheric plates of North America, Eurasia and Africa – more precisely in the microplate of the Azores - the Azorean Archipelago is constituted by nine oceanic islands of relatively recent volcanic origin (between 0.3 and 8 million years) (Morten, et.al., 1998).

Figure 1 – The Azores and their location in the Atlantic Ocean. The darkened areas on each island correspond to protected areas, based on the recent system of IUCN from Island Parks (Parques de Ilha). Beside each island there is presented its geologic age in Millions of years (Myr.) Source: Borges et. al. (2009)

Geologically, the Azores can be understood as a volcanic plateau with 20-36 million years (MA); the oldest island (Santa Maria) arose approximately 8 million years ago, while the youngest island (Pico) has approximately 0.250 million years. Contrary to the Hawaiian archipelago, for example, where the islands are arranged in accordance with their chronological origin, the localization of the Azores does not show any correlation between their distances to the eruptive center and its date of emergence (França et. al., 2003)

The oceanic distribution of these islands, and consequentially their relative positions, led to the establishment of the following groupings: (i) the western group, composed of the islands Flores and Corvo; (ii) central group, which includes the islands Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira and (iii) the eastern group including São Miguel, Santa Maria and the

Page 13: OPEN CALL | | Artist Residency | Terra Incógnitaarquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/website/wp... · 2016-12-06 · With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago

Formigas islands. The different islands appear in an alignment following a band which is generally oriented NW-SE, with an expanse of nearly 600 km (375 miles) stretching between Santa Maria and Corvo.

The Azores are separated from the most westerly point of the European continent by 1392 kilometers. Their localization at an average latitude of 38° 30'N provides the archipelago with a distinctly Oceanic climate. The climate of these islands can be characterized by its thermal amenity, by the elevated index of atmospheric moisture, relatively low levels of solar exposure, regular and abundant rainfalls, and by a set of vigorous winds which surround the archipelago, accompanying the evolution of patterns of atmospheric circulation within the North Atlantic basin (Azevedo, 2001). Climactic asymmetries in the interior of each island are related not only with the shape and orientation of the elevations, as well as the superficial geologic structure, with the vegetation, and in some cases, with the reciprocal influence of neighboring islands.

HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF THE AZOREAN ARCHIPELAGO

Despite the reported sighting of the Azores in 1427 by Diogo de Silves, only in 1432 did Gonçalo Velho Cabral and his crew disembark on the island of Santa Maria, initiating with this act the beginning of the process of the inhabitation of the archipelago. In 1439, the islands which were then known, were occupied primarily by people originating from the continental regions of the Alentejo, Algarve, Estremadura and Minho. After the islands of the eastern group, Santa Maria and São Miguel (1444), followed the islands of the central group, the islands Terceira, (initially named the Island of Jesus Christ) (ca.1450), São Jorge (ca. 1443), Pico, Graciosa (ca.1450) and Faial (ca.1460), being discovered, almost twenty years after the landing at Santa Maria, in 1452, the islands of Flores (initially named the islands of São Tomás e Santa Iria) and Corvo, in the Western group. By 1457 all of the islands had been visited, both by Portuguese as well as Flemish sailors, who were to fulfill an important role in the populating of the islands, as were colonizers of other European locales such as the North of France.

The archipelago of the Azores assumed, since its discovery, an important geostrategic role considered above all as the universal stopover in the western sea, as recognized by Gaspar

Page 14: OPEN CALL | | Artist Residency | Terra Incógnitaarquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/website/wp... · 2016-12-06 · With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago

Frutuoso (Frutuoso, 1586-1590, Livro VI), and in the big picture of the Atlantic, constituting the most important harbor for nautical voyages returning to Europe, by being precisely the point of departure for the last stage of the journey heading towards the European continent.

The geographic position of the Sea of the Azores , and their winds favorable to sailing, with their islands populated by hospitable peoples, providing vigilance, supplies and defense for the ships on this stoppage, made this territory an important logistic outpost, not only during the time of the Portuguese Expansion but also in the dynamic of the principal international commercial fleets belonging to European powers which were circulating throughout the Atlantic since the sixteenth century.

Beyond their notable role in the grand scheme of the European economic expansion of the Modern Era, the Azores were also an important base for supporting maritime expeditions developed by scientific explorers of different nationalities. This condition, as a point of transcultural confluence, deriving from the intersection of return routes from India, Africa or Brazil, of adventurous navigators and the consequential arrival of people from distant origins, generated a natural pre-disposition for that which came from the outside, and towards a universal creationist conscience.

In the context of the dominion of King Felipe, the Azores constituted the last bastion of resistance to Castilian subjection, playing a special role in the installation of Dom António I of Portugal, Prior of Crato, in the island of Terceira, governing the country from there, a resistance which persisted until 1583. The famous battle of the Bay of Salga took place on the 25th of July in 1581, on the island of Terceira, with the Portuguese as victors, having had the French as their allies. However, there soon followed the Naval Battle of Vila Franca (São Miguel), which occurred the 26th of July 1582, which led to the definitive loss of control over the island of São Miguel, fragilizing the Azorean resistance. One year later, the Castilian armada led by D. Álvaro de Bazan, one of the most experienced admirals of Felipe II of Spain, who had won the famous battle of Lepanto, putting an end to the resistance of the island of Terceira with the Landing at the Bay of Mós.

Page 15: OPEN CALL | | Artist Residency | Terra Incógnitaarquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/website/wp... · 2016-12-06 · With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago

In the context of the Liberal Struggle, the Azores also assumed a major role, above all regarding the Portuguese Civil War, in the Battle of Vila da Praia, on the island of Terceira, which granted victory to the liberal forces, taking place on the 11th of August 1829. The following year, on Terceira, there was established the Council of the Regency of D. Maria II, becoming capital of the kingdom, the so-called Regency of Angra, lasting from 1828 to 1832. During the period of the Constitutional Monarchy (1832-1891), the Azores returned to their peripheral role, having been created through the administrative code of 1836, the eastern, central and western districts.

As a result of the harsh living conditions on the archipelago, and of a recurring populational pressure in the territory of the island, the phenomena of Azorean emigration was cyclical. Since the 17th century, the Azorean diaspora has participated in the colonization of the north and north-east of Brazil, notably in the provinces of Maranhão, Pará and Ceará, and to the south, installing themselves in Santa Catarina, Nossa Senhora do Desterro, Porto Alegre and São Pedro do Rio Grande. Starting in the 18th century the emigration opened up to destinations in North America, becoming commonplace to emigrate to the United States of America, intensifying in these localities during the 19th and the 20th centuries, expanding into Canada since the decade of the 1950's.

Introduced to the Azorean archipelago in the 16th century, oranges were a very successful crop on several islands, a business which was only to set sail commercially between the middle of the 18th century and the third quarter of the following century, with the English market being their principal destination. The orange cycle, was a notable episode in the economic history of the Azores, which transformed the landscape, the society and culture of the Azores, with the production on São Miguel being particularly remarkable, where it reigned supreme. On the remaining islands, despite also being producers of fruit, they were of lesser importance, with Terceira complementing their harvests with the production and exportation of cereals, and on Faial and Pico, a diversified economy.

In the 19th century there were frequent attacks of various plagues, among which cocus hesperidum and teardrop, became factors which along with a crisis in the Anglo-Saxonic market, competitiveness from Spanish and Italian producers, and a price drop on the produce resulted in low profitability in the production and consequently, in its unviability.

Page 16: OPEN CALL | | Artist Residency | Terra Incógnitaarquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/website/wp... · 2016-12-06 · With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago

The second half of the 19th century is a period of great dynamism in respect to agriculture, business and industry. In the agricultural sphere, the diffusion and implementation of new techniques and growing methods resulted in growth in production and improvements in quality, giving rise to new crops such as pineapples, tea and tobacco, in response to the crisis in the orange market and the vineyards.

With the Red Carnation Revolution, on April 25 of 1974, the process of autonomy became consolidated, having origins in the Decree of March 2nd, 1895, and culminating in 1976 with the constitution of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

E) ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY (FAUNA + FLORA)

BIODIVERSITY IN THE AZOREAN ACRHIPELAGO – FAUNA AND FLORA OF THE AZORES

Among the biogeographic characteristics most relevant to these oceanic islands is their extreme isolation and consequentially very difficult accessibility. In this way it is natural that the flora and fauna of the islands are characterized by a relative low statistical diversity and even the complete absence of certain taxonomic groups. However, this lack of diversity does not imply that there is any shortage of extraordinary natural elements.

Page 41: OPEN CALL | | Artist Residency | Terra Incógnitaarquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/website/wp... · 2016-12-06 · With the artist residency Terra Incógnita, the Arquipélago

The isolation and the dynamic geological history have facilitated the process of speciation, giving rise to elevated percentages of endemic species (a species which occurs exclusively in a determined area or geographic region). The Azores are, as oceanic islands tend to be, exceptional ecological and evolutionary laboratories.

The species which are to be found on the islands which were originally barren of life, are the result of a balance between natural colonization – based upon the area of the island and the distance between the source of the colonizers (MacArthur & Wilson, 1967) . And of in-situ diversification alongside natural phenomena of extinction.

It is believed that the Azores, especially the younger islands, are not saturated with species. On the contrary, the situation of the different islands of the archipelago is closer to a condition of imbalance, due to the following factors (i) difficulty in dispersion, due to the isolation of the archipelago, which is superior to the abilities of dispersion of a large number of species; (ii) the vicissitudes of the Pleistocene environment; (iii) the destructive influence of volcanic activity; and, more recently, (iv) the impact of human activities.

Still yet, we must note that the colonization of the Azores occurred during a geological period which was very short, considering that the youngest island (Santa Maria) arose "merely" 8 million years ago. As such, it is natural that, for example, the only endemic mammal is the bat species Nyctalus azoreum, and the fact that there exists only one bird of prey present in the entire archipelago: the round-winged eagle (Buteo buteo rothschildi), which is commonly known in the islands as the milhafre.

According to Borges et. al. (2010) the total number of taxonomies (species and subspecies) on land in the Azores is estimated to be around 6164 (6112 species) being that the total number of endemic terrestrial species and subspecies reaches approximately 452 (411 species). Animals represent the largest number of endemic organisms with 299 taxonomies (Arthropods = 236; Mollusk = 49; Vertebrate =12; Nematode = 2), embodying nearly 73% of the endemic terrestrial species.

Good examples of this are the taxonomies of the genera Laurus, Clethra, Ilex, Picconia, Myrica and Prunus. Let us not forget the Vidalia (Azorina vidalii), the one and only genus endemic to the Azores. Fungi (including lichens) represent 33 endemic organisms and both

the hardshell algaes and the bryophytes include seven endemic species. (See chart in annex).

The Azores possess a complex and diverse mosaic of coastal marine and oceanic habitats owing to the proximity of the coastal and oceanic environments. The different habitats of the archipelago serve as zones of reproduction, shelter, growth, alimentation and rest for numerous species with distinct ecological and geographical affinities. The occurrence of large expanses of open sea, of great numbers of invertebrates, fish or cetaceans, which end up integrating, in a more or less permanent manner, in an insular coastal dynamic allows for a diversified and abundant marine ichthyofauna. There are 460 registered species within the ZEE (Economic Exclusive Zone) of which 44 are cartilaginous species (rays, sharks and chimera fish) and 416 of which are bone fish.

The degree of endemism amongst marine vertebrates is very minimal, having only three fish being considered endemic, the wrasse (Centrolabus caeruleus), the Azorean scorpion fish (Scorpaena azorica) (Santos et al., 1997), and the Azorean dogfish Scymnodalatias garricki, of which only two subspecies are known. In what is to be said in respects to marine invertebrates, the mollusks present an elevated endemism, above all at the level of the gastropods (with 27 endemic species).

The Azores also hold important colonies of corals, as much from Mediterranean environments as those of Macaronesia, or of North Africa, which although they may not form reefs, have colonized vast areas including submarine caves at great depths. (Barreiros, 2013). The Azores is one of the few places in the world where there are registered the presence of 28 different species of cetaceans (Prieto & Silva, 2010) with their frequency varying seasonally. The absence of any continental platform makes it possible for several open ocean specimens of grand dimensions, such as the big eye tuna (Thunnus obesus) or the blue shark (Prionace glauca) which in other regions are unable to approach the coast so closely.

Relative to marine birds, the azores are an extremely important nesting site for populations of Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea borealis), little shearwaters (Puffinus assimilis), Bulwer's petrel (Bulweria bulwerii), roseate terns (Sterna dougalli) and common terns (Sterna hirundo) as well as Monteiro's storm petrel (Oceanodroma monteiroi). Of these, special attention should be given to Monteiro's storm petrel, as it is the only marine bird

endemic to the islands, as well as to the Cory's shearwater, seeing that 65% of their global population nests on the Azores (Meirinho et al., 2014).

EXOTIC SPECIES ON THE AZORES

Among the exotic species introduced to the Azores and common to the nine islands, of note, among the vascular plants, are kahili ginger (Hedychium gardneranum), hortensias (Hydrangea macrophylla), pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum) and japanese cedars (Cryptomeria japonica). Some of these exotic species have exhibited an extremely aggressive invasive character (e.g. H. gardneranum), occupying territory previously inhabited by endemic species, so much that it has become one of the most serious situations occurring in the Special Protection Zone (ZPE) of Pico da Vara on São Miguel.

Troublesome situations are also happening on the island of Flores with the hortensias, and the Pico de S. Miguel with the pittosporums. In reference to the exotic species of fauna certain invasors stand out, such as the by house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) both introduced by way of the island of Terceira - the fershwater crayfish (lagostimarus clarkii), common rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) and black rats (Rattus rattus).

a. ISLAND OF FLORES

The island of Flores, with a length of 40 km and a width of 15 km holds an area of 143.11 km2.

Situated at 21° 59’W by 39° 25’N, it is the most westerly island of the archipelago, lying

almost 600km from the island of Santa Maria, the most easterly.

Figure 1 – Island of Flores Source: Google Maps.

Due to the fact that it is more removed from the continent, along with the island of Corvo, the island is host to a narrower biodiversity. However, the low number of inhabitants por km2 (28) has diminished, in a general fashion, the human pressure upon the diverse natural habitats which are to be found on this island and which contribute to the coexistence of species with limited global distribution such as Cory's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea borealis), to migratory species originating on the American or European continents, threatened species, or to those species which in the Azores, are at the very limit of their worldwide geographical distribution. Such is the case with some species of birds belonging to the Procellariformes (e.g. Oceanodroma monteiroi) (Medeiros et al., 2008). As such the island of Flores displays an important number of endemisms distributed throughout various groups.

The high and humid zones of the Central Plateau contain the largest and most well preserved bog of the Atlantic, associated to the largest Azorean juniper forest, vital to the hydric equilibrium of the island as well as the streams and waterfalls that define the landscape.

Since May 27th 2009, this island has become partners in the UNESCO Worldwide Network of Biosphere Reserves. The biosphere of the Island of Flores covers all of the unsubmerged portion of the island as well as an adjacent marine area, covering a total area of 144 850.7 acres.

b. THE ISLAND OF TERCEIRA

The island of Terceira is centered upon the latitude of 38°40’N and the longitude of

27°10’W, having an approximate area of 401.6 km2, in an almost elliptical form, with a length

of 29 km and a width of 17km.

Figure 2 – The Island of Terceira | Source: Google Maps

The island of Terceira possesses on average 50% of the total species of bryophytes, vascular plants, land mollusks, arthropods and vertebrates, and this percentage rises when one has in consideration just the endemic species, which in the case of the bryophytes has reached 100% (Mendonça, 2013).

The Natural Park of the Island of Terceira, with a total area of 95.78 km2, is constituted by 20 land and maritime areas , covering 88.35km2 and 7.43km2, respectively. Inside these protected areas, of particular interest is the Natural Reserve of the Serra de Santa Bárbara and the Mistérios Negros, with 4,604.56 acres which includes one of the largest and most well preserved plots of natural Azorean vegetation.

Presenting a wide diversity of species, habitats and protected ecosystems, namely pioneer grasslands of Azorean junipers (Juniperus brevifolia) and heather (Calluna vulgaris), natural prairies and bogs of moss (Sphagnum sp.) The interior of the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara constitutes a seperate preserve (categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature –IUCN Ia), due to which access to this zone is conditioned.

c. THE ISLAND OF SÃO MIGUEL

Located between the latitude of 37°48′N and a longitude of 25°12′W, São Miguel is the largest island of the archipelago having 64.7 kilometers in length and 15 kilometers of maximum width, covering na approximate area of 750 km2. Due to being the island with the largest area, it is also the island with the largest number of endemic species.

Figure 3 – Island of São Miguel | Source: Google Maps

As a point of reference of the works which were undertaken on this island in the recuperation of the endemic flora and fauna, of particular distinction is the Natural Reserve of Pico da Vara, situated in the Eastern zone of the island with an area of 7.86 km2, and wherein lies the highest point on the island of São Miguel (1105 m).

On the level of habitats, most notable are the prairies dominated by Deschampsia sp. which appeared on the tops of the mountains and the Laurissilva Forest composed of Erica azorica (Heather), Vaccinium cylindraceum (Saw grapes), Juniperus brevifolia (Azorean Juniper) e Laurus azorica (Laurel). At the level of fauna most notable is the presence of the Azorean Bull-finch (Pyrrhula murina), the only land bird endemic to the Azores, which was once common, and saw its geograophical distribution restricted to the counties of Nordeste and Povoação overall due to the replacement of native forests for exotics forests of Cryptomeria japonica e Pittosporum undulatum (Ramos, 1996).
