The main five areas that need checking are steering, brakes, tyres, bodywork and emissions.

• Steering - for any leaks if it is a hydraulic system, be this through pipes or gaiters that may have perished.

• Brakes - for wear on the pads or shoes; the thickness of the brake disc (thin discs are prone to cracking especially at higher speeds if they are weak); and wheel cylinders for leaking fluid. Checking the flexible hoses along with the metal brake pipes that are subject to corrosion, especially with our salty air, are essential. The car should be on a ramp when this is done as pipes are threaded throughout the chassis and would be difficult to check on the ground.

• Tyres - for the depth of tread. We would recommend at least 2mm to give good grip for stopping in all conditions. Checking the side walls of the tyre, especially on the left

hand side for cracks due to kerb damage, is a must, as bubbles can appear which weaken the tyre.

• Bodywork - whilst the upper side of the vehicle can be easily seen, the areas underneath the car such as the chassis points (especially where the suspension connects) need to be checked for rust and decay.

• Emissions - can be checked quickly with the right equipment. A well maintained car should be running at its optimum performance and owners should not be concerned that this is something to fear.

Your local GMTA dealer will be happy to advise you on any points that are of concern, but safety should be a priority, so we would advise the above items are checked, front and rear seat belts are worn, and you make sure child seats are installed correctly. With these checks done, you will have peace of mind, as well as relaxed and safe motoring.

TOYOTA HYBRID TECHNOLOGY WINNING RACESToyota Racing made the perfect start to the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship season with a one-two finish in Six Hours of Silverstone. It was a particularly sweet home victory for British driver Anthony Davidson, a member of the three-man squad piloting the winning No 8 car.

The result marked an impressive maiden outing for the new, 1,000PS four-wheel drive Toyota TS040 Hybrid, which claimed honours in a race shortened due to severe weather conditions.

The new TS040 Hybrid represents the most advanced hybrid technology in modern racing and heralds a new era of hybrid powered motorsport. With it, Toyota is taking on rival manufacturers Audi and Porsche with a car that benefits from 480PS (473bhp) of all-wheel drive hybrid boost in addition to the 520PS (513bhp) produced by its 3.7-litre V8 petrol engine, taking maximum power to 1,000PS (986bhp).

The new powertrain has been developed in line with revised WEC technical regulations, which put an emphasis on fuel economy as teams are required to use 25 per cent less fuel than in 2013.

The more open regulations have also allowed the team to engineer a major increase in hybrid power, using a new motor-generator on the front axle in addition to the unit at the rear. Under deceleration, these apply braking force in combination with the traditional mechanical brakes to harvest energy, which is then transferred via an inverter to a super-capacitor.

When the car accelerates, the motor-generators reverse their function, delivering a power boost to all four wheels.

By adopting more road-relevant technology, the WEC will increase the possibilities for the transfer of Toyota’s race-bred technical know-how to its production cars, strengthening is status as the world’s leading manufacturer of hybrid vehicles. There are now more than 6 million of Toyota’s hybrids on the road – that’s 80% of all the hybrids sold worldwide. And as the biggest producer of this innovative technology, they don’t intend to stop there. By 2020, 50% of all Toyotas will be hybrid.

Emissions from Toyota hybrid vehicles – which mate a conventional petrol engine to an electric motor – contain no particulates, very low levels of nitrogen oxides, and emit lower levels of CO2 than equivalent powered diesel engine rivals.

Toyota currently produces three hybrid cars: the Yaris, Prius and the Auris. The Auris is one of the fastest growing success stories in the UK auto industry, with sales of the British-built hatchback and wagon racing to a record market share in March - a best-yet 5.7 per cent share of the compact family car segment in the year to date. And significantly, UK customers are turning to Toyota hybrid technology in ever greater numbers: hybrids now account for half of all national Auris sales.

A. I’ve been at Forest Road Garage almost a year.

Q. How did you come to work for Forest Road Garage?

A. Having been within the motor trade for just over 10 years – primarily within a sales admin role - I decided that I wanted to focus more on a customer care/customer facing role. A vacancy within the service department came up – and as they say the rest is history.

Q. Describe a typical day.

A. My day starts just after 7.30. I check the diary for that day's work to see what needs to be done before the technicians arrive. Customers start to arrive not long after, bringing in their vehicles for service/repair.As the day progresses it is very varied - from answering the phone, dealing with queries, to arranging future service/repair bookings. Customers drop in throughout the day requiring assistance where we try and solve their problems while they wait. As the day goes on, customers start arriving to collect their cars which have been worked on during the day.

Q. What do you like about your job? Is there anything you don’t like?

A. Happy customers. Kia’s motto is “Family Like Care” and we believe that we offer more than that no matter what make or model of car, nothing is too much trouble and we are here for the customer's convenience.

What don’t I like?.....In the winter I arrive at work in the dark and go home in the dark!

Q. What do you like about working with Kia/Mazda?

A. The Kia brand has grown rapidly over the last few years and to prove it Kia now offer a 7 year warranty on the model range which speaks volumes.

Q. What do you do in your spare time?

A. I like the simple things in life. Good food, good wine and the company of my fantastic friends and family.

I like to 'get off the rock' at least every other month either for a city weekend break or a relaxing weekend. I’m often seen looking for our next holiday.

I am the secretary for the Guernsey Softball Association which keeps me very busy during the summer months, and I do the stats for each game.

Q. If you didn’t do this for a living, what would you do?

I would love to have a traditional tea shop.

SWEET INCENTIVES

The Vauxhall Mokka continues to ride the wave of success, once again making it to European bestseller just 18 months after its arrival at dealerships.

Vauxhall/Opel already boasts a total of 200,000 orders for its innovative sub-compact SUV. What’s more, February 2014 saw the best order intake ever.
