LaGrange will be the
hub of cycling activity
in Georgia on June 11
&12 as the 2015
Bicycle Ride Across
Georgia (BRAG) sets
up camp at LaGrange
College.
Arriving from Newnan
on Thursday, more than
1,000 cyclists will cam-
pout or stay in local
hotels during their two-
day visit. On Friday, the
cyclists will enjoy the
local scenery as they
ride along the highways
around Troup County.
On both days, BRAG
participants and the
community can enjoy
festivities designed to
entertain the mind and
refresh the bodies of
weary riders. On
Thursday, June 11,
Downtown LaGrange
Development Authority
will present the popular
movie, Space Jam fea-
turing basketball great
Michael Jordan and
characters from the
world of Looney Tunes.
Music fills the bill on
Friday, June 12, as five
groups will compete in
the Battle of the Bands
from 6:00-10:30, on
Bull Street. Both events
are free and open to the
public.
BRAG is an annual
odyssey of discovery of
gorgeous Georgia by
bicycle. It is not a race.
It is recreational, social,
and, the most fun you
can have on two
wheels. While a chal-
lenging journey, BRAG
has been completed by
all types of people
college students and
high schoolers, young
professionals and sol-
diers, teachers, athletes
and more.

Ladies do not wear
aprons anymore. Back
when I was growing
up in the 50s and 60s
women had to have an
apron tied around their
waist. Their purpose
was to keep their dress
clean. Some had bibs
that went around their
neck and around their
waist. I have some
saved that my Mom
and Grandmother
made. They are beau-
tiful.
When company came
Mom and Grandma
always had that apron
on. It served many
purposes. Mom used it
for a pot holder pick-
ing up hot dishes from
the oven. You had to
have one to carry fresh
picked vegetables from
the garden. The apron
made a great basket
for fruit carried from
the field.
There were so many
uses for an apron it
was unimaginable.
For instance, if hang-
ing clothes on the
clothes line you had to
clean the line off
before hand, it was
good the carry clothes
pins. A good apron
always had pockets.
My mom made her
aprons. She also
received them as gifts.
There were all shapes
and sizes made with
flowers, hearts, fruit,
etc. My Mom smocked
her aprons a lot. Lace,
rickrack and other
trimming were added.
Other uses were wip-
ing dirty little faces
and wiping tears. If
you had to make a trip
to the woodshed it was
used for carrying kin-
dling or small pieces
of wood. It was used
for gathering eggs. A
flap of the tail would
send the chickens back
into the pen.
The apron was used to
shoo flies away when
sitting outside. It could
be wrapped around
arms when it turned
chilly.
Now that I think of it
we dont do any of
these things anymore.
We have clothes dryers
and washing machines.
We have air condition-
ers and central heat.
Most of us buy our
eggs at the store. We
still have gardens.
Wouldnt it be nice to
have an apron to put
you vegetables in and
take them to the house.
I am sure my Mom
still wears her apron in
heaven. After all you
cannot greet company
without a fresh, clean,
crisp apron tied around
your waist.

After a long illness, a
woman died and arrived
at the Gates of Heaven.
While she was waiting
for Saint Peter to greet
her, she peeked through
the Gates. She saw a
beautiful banquet table.
Sitting all around were
her parents and all the
other people she had
loved and who had died
before her. They saw
her and began calling
greetings to her --
"Hello" "How are you!
We've been waiting for
you!" "Good to see
you."
When Saint Peter came
by, the woman said to
him, "This is such a
wonderful place! How
do I get in?"
"You have to spell a
word," Saint Peter told
her.
"Which word?" the
woman asked.
"Love."
The woman correctly
spelled "Love" and
Saint Peter welcomed
her into Heaven.
About six months later,
Saint Peter came to the
woman and asked her to
watch the Gates of
Heaven for him that
day. While the woman
was guarding the Gates
of Heaven, her husband
arrived.
"I'm surprised to see
you" the woman said.
"How have you been?"
"Oh, I've been doing
pretty well since you
died," her husband told
her. "I married the
beautiful young nurse
who took care of you
while you were ill. And
then I won the lottery. I
sold the little house you
and I lived in and
bought a big mansion.
And my wife and I trav-
eled all around the
world. We were on
vacation and I went
water skiing today.
Unfortunately, I fell on
a ski and hit my head,
and here I am. How do
I get in?"
"You have to spell a
word," the woman told
him.
"Which word?" her hus-
band asked.
"Czechoslovakia."
