A MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY

1

2011 can best be described as a year of new friends, new opportunities and new challenges.

Our “friends” include the 30 people who make up our newly formed Autism Advisory Board. Parents, educators, human service providers, law enforcement officials and people with autism provide us with valuable insights on how to address the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Other new “friends” include Karen Springmeier and Michael Stapleton who were appointed to serve on our Chapter Board of Directors and Sarah Greene, Kevin Bragg and John Krueger who have joined the Friends of Ontario ARC Foundation Board. We also welcomed new members to our Community Advisory Board: Dr. Jose Acevedo, John Garvey, Jack Marren, Kathy Rayburn and Michael Sheridan. We give a big thanks to these folks for offering their time and talents in support of Ontario ARC.

Our new opportunities were highlighted by the opening of The Autism Center at Ontario ARC. This unique partnership of families, local and national “experts” and other service providers has enabled ARC to take a leadership role in addressing the varied needs of people with autism in our region.

And lastly, as an organization that has relied primarily on government funding to support our programs and services, the challenge of continuing to meet those needs with fewer and fewer dollars is a reality we now deal with every day.

In spite of this, we remain vastly optimistic.

We believe that we have a blueprint for the future that involves greater emphasis on fundraising, offering new, low cost services and involving families and friends more than ever. We know this strategy can work because we are already starting to see it take shape. As we head into 2012, we thank our many supporters for continuing to make Ontario ARC an organization we can all take great pride in.

* Temporarily restricted funds represent resources that have donor-imposed restrictions on the use of the funds. Temporarily restricted funds for the Autism and Pet Connections programs of $126,787 were unused as of December 31, 2011.
