Yarn of the Seat in StandFreddie and John were fortunate enough to have a seasonticket to watch Chelsea. They could not help noticing thatthere was always a spare seat next (B14) to them and theyhad a friend who would love to buy a season ticket, espe-cially if all three could have seats together.One half-time Freddie went to the ticket office and askedif they could by buy the season ticket for B14. The officialsaid that unfortunately the ticket had been sold.Nevertheless, week after week the seat was still empty. Then on Boxing day, much to Freddie and Eddie's amaze-ment the seat was taken for the first time that season.John could not resist asking the newcomer, 'Where haveyou been all season'. Don't ask he said, the wife boughtthe season ticket back last summer, and kept it for a sur-prise Christmas present.

With "Silver Bells," "White Christmas," and "RudolphThe Red Nose Reindeer" playing on the radio nearby,the children and I would make Christmas cookies. I'dgive each of them a small paint brush and put red,yellow, white and green frosting in small dishes.They would then paint their own Christmas cookies.When I close my eyes, I can still see the different col-ors of frosting on their little faces.
• • • • •Back when I was child, we were lucky to get one gift.There were twelve of us kids, and I still visualize mom'slong, cotton stockings hanging all the way up to thestairway, just waiting to be filled by Santa. At five in themorning, we were up and ready to open up our one gift,but the most important thing was the fruit, ribboncandy, nuts, and box of Life Savers- — all colors of therainbow — in our Christmas stockings!
• • • • •I received my first bike when I was about seven yearsold. I desperately wanted a bike for Christmas thatyear, but when all the gifts were opened, no bike!Sensing my despair, my dad said, "Keep looking".Finally, I discovered it – they had cleverly parked itbehind the couch. They thought they were so smart.If only they knew how heart-broken I was when I did-n't see the bike at first.That bike was a "stripped down version." No handbrakes, etc. One day shortly after Christmas when Iwas trying to learn to ride the thing, I decided tocoast down the short, but fairly steep hill betweenthe shop and the cattle barn. My dad was coming upfrom the barn, and, seeing me flying uncontrollablydown the hill, shouted, "Use your brakes!" I replied,"What brakes?" No one told me that reversing thepedals would apply brakes to the rear wheel! I canstill see that "crash" in my mind's eye.
• • • • •I remember Grandma’s Christmas tree, an oddly
shaped cedar tree with sprawling branches reachingclumsily in every direction. It would be all lit up withbig gaudy bright lights, red and green and blue and yel-low and orange. The tree would glisten with silver icicletinsel and hanging from each branch was the old“Shiny Brite” glass balls.In Grandma’s window were candles with orange bulbs. AsDaddy and Mom and my brother and I would head homeafter Christmas dinner, I would watch through the backcar window until we were over the second hill, and thecandle lights would finally fade away into the night.
• • • • •Securing Christmas lights to the tree can be a produc-tion. One year, when we finally stood back and flickedon the light switch, I noticed that a branch obscuredour prized angel ornament. I grabbed the pruningshears, mounted a stool, and snipped once, and thelights went out. My husband quietly said, “You don’thave your glasses on, do you?”
• • • • •When I was around six, I woke up during the night ofChristmas Eve and caught my mom looking around up inthe attic. She told me she thought she had heard a rat. Foryears later I was paranoid about rats in the attic!
• • • • •One year I got a bride doll, and Mama made me a greatstack of clothes for her. Of course I thought Santa Clausbrought them. We never got gifts any other time so it wasso exciting. We could ask Santa for one big thing and 2small ones (doll, some tights, and maybe a tea set).
• • • • •On Christmas Eve we would go to my Grandmother'shouse. We would arrive to the smell of burning logs andmy Grandfathers Pipe. The walls would be decoratedsolely with Holly and the real Christmas Tree stoodaloud lit by candles, as in proper one's (the Fire Brigadewere busier then!).
In the evening we would sit around the Grand Pianowith the Candelabra and my Grandmother would leadus in festive music. This was fun, she had once playedPiano for the silent movies in the local Cinema andcould turn her hand to pretty much anything. Whilstthis was happening, the Yule Log would gently glowitself away.We would venture up to bed and sit there for quite awhile listening for Sleigh Bells. Of course, we alwaysheard them, but I looking back I have to say they didsound remarkably similar to the Door Bells in theKitchen. The morning would come and if we werevery lucky, we may get 6 presents - one each fromimmediate family. I'd usually get a Rupert Annual,an addition to a Meccano Set etc. I recall the biggestpresent of all during the 50's was probably a BrownieCamera - in a Gift pack don't you know!!My sister would get the usual Dolls, Girls OwnAnnual and other girlie things like Hair Groomingsets and pretend Cosmetics etc.For weeks after, you would go to bed and neatly stackyour new things next to your bed, always puttingthings back in boxes and in constant fear of aBurglary. Christmas Day has remained much thesame as in the food you ate etc., the big differencebeing that the vegetables would have always comefrom your own Garden. Even the Milkman called onChristmas morning and you would be surprised thathe saw the end of his Round, it was quite normal forhim to have a tipple at every house.Although there was TV, it was only in the late 1950'sthat 'Christmas Specials' started, these being mainlythe Perry Como Show, Andy Williams etc. From theUK came Tony Hancock and very early Six FiveSpecials (popular music with Lonnie Donegan, CliffRichard and others).Much to the enjoyment of my Grandfather you wouldget a Laurel and Hardy slot, maybe Buster Keatonand a Cartoon.
