TADACT – WHEELS 2019

Technology for Ageing and Disability (TADACT) is a small local charity organisation that makes and modifies equipment for people with disabilities of all ages, and also provides equipment solutions for older people. A number of our CACMC members carry out voluntary work for TADACT. At the end of June 2016 TADACT lost its funding from the ACT Government, which used to cover over 60% of its operational costs. Being one of the two nominated charities for Wheels 2019 and collecting just over $1,600 in donations, will help TADACT to continue to exist. Thank you to CACMC and the Council of Motor Clubs for your support. If you know of any organisation looking around for a charity to support, or have an idea for fundraising, or know someone who wants to make a living bequest, please contact me. Thanks again. Shannons Wheels 2019

The 37th annual Shannons Wheels display was held at the Queanbeyan Showground on Sunday 3 March 2019. The CACMC had 51 vehicles on display. Around 500 vehicles and 40 motor cycles adequately covered the showground grass area. A number of vehicles which arrived after the deadline for entry were parked outside the gate. Queanbeyan and Palerang Regional Council Mayor Tim Overall and the Lady Mayoress Nicole Overall officially opened the event and then selected the vehicle they would most like to take home. Ms Overall selected an early model Model T Ford, which was the first motor vehicle in Queanbeyan and The Mayor selected a 1952 MG TD. Best car display as selected by Steve Farmer from Shannons Insurance was the Mercedes Benz Club Canberra. Of special interest was the Shannons rig which carries information about the benefits of insuring with Shannons. The prime mover and trailer travels around Australia for 52 weeks of the year and after leaving Queanbeyan is heading to Darwin. Cancer Council and Technology for the Aging and Disabled were the beneficiaries of the gold coin donation collected at the entrance gate. Queanbeyan CWA provided scones, tea and coffee, the Queanbeyan Hospital Auxiliary provided soft drinks, water and BBQ meals, The Vietnam Veterans had egg and bacon rolls, sausage sandwich’s for sale, 5 Bean coffee cart was selling coffees and, hot chocolate, and Gelato ice cream van was doing a brisk trade. St John Ambulance had a quiet day almost free of people of any injuries. The day was organised by the Southern Tables Heritage Automotive Restorers Club (STHARC) on behalf of the Council of ACT Motor Clubs. The club has indicated that they will be prepared to organise the 2020 Shannons wheels display which will be held on Sunday of 1st March 2020 Graham Gittins Thanks Graham I have only included a small selection of pictures. I’ll try to get more into following issues or you will have to wait for Presentation Night.

SHANNONS WHEELS DISPLAY DAY—3 MARCH 2019—

QUEANBEYAN SHOWGROUND

Numbers were put on 51 vehicles in our display although I found out later

that the maroon Bristol did not belong to our Club. Thank you to Ray

Gallagher who walked around with me to number the cars and record to

whom them belonged. Thank you to all who heeded the need to identify

their vehicle. Black marks to owners of two MGs which we could not

identify.

Due to the absence of Bob Alexander overseas and Waine Summerfield also being out of town, thank you to Joe Micallef and Graham Boyce for helping with the judging this year. Club Examiners Charlie Adams, Dean Benedetti and Alec McKernan were on hand. Thanks to them for checking vehicles all year as well as turning up on Wheels Day for judging. Thanks to all members who helped with marshalling for The Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers’ Club or helped with getting our display into place or putting the shade tent up, specially Vin who brought it. The shade tent was well used on the day. It was a warm day but didn’t get too uncomfortable until the afternoon. I was wrecked by the time I drove home with no air con. Another successful day and next year’s date is 1 March, same venue. Helen

Seniors Expo 2019 a great success

The annual Seniors Expo attracted ten members’ vehicles on display at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) the vehicles parked outside the Budawang building which attracted visitors to the Expo in great numbers. Many asked questions about particular vehicles. Some remnant of owning, or their father owning a car of the same make, colour and era. Inside the building people of all ages were greeted by staff and volunteers from more than 120 exhibitors offering advice on a range of topics from retirement village living, travel, investments, health, scooters and mobility and community organisations to join. In fact anything and everything to do with retirement from the workforce. Most also offered lollies, ballpoint pens, and a range of other nick knacks give a ways, people were observed leaving the building with swags of bags, not unlike children at an agricultural show with their sample bags. Both Commonwealth and ACT Government departments were present in numbers, Police, welfare, Human Services, Veterans Affairs, Centrelink, Medicare, and Transport Canberra – the light rail project. Dispensing information was the main focus of the expo. ACT Government Minister for Seniors and Veterans, Gordon Ramsey, officially opened the expo. The Seniors Expo is presented by the Council of the Aging (COTA ACT) Club members and their cars who attended the expo were: Roger Amos MG B Graham Bigg BMW David Brand Rover Honda Michael and Vanda Catanzariti Dodge Ray Gallagher 3 Litre Austin Graham and Heather Gittins MG ZA Magnette Paul Flint Datsun Vin Liston HR Holden Brian McKay Plymouth John de la Torre Mercedes Benz Thanks to Graham Gittins I was late getting there as I had a garden club outing in the morning. Skoda Tatra museum opening in Oberon NSW

The club was represented by Chris and Irene Berry and Heather and Graham Gittins at the official opening of the Skoda Tatra Museum in Oberon NSW on Saturday 2 March 2019. The museum at the present time hold five vehicles including three from club member Chris Mack’s collection. Chris is not well and was not able to attend the opening. His two sons, Ken and Craig were able to attend, the opening which was carried out by Ondre Bohac Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra. The official opening attracted around 85 people, mainly members and guests of the Skoda Tatra car Club, Sydney. The weekend started with an informal dinner on the Friday night, attended by the Mayor of Oberon Kathy Sajowitz and Ondre Bohac. Next morning guests were entertained by members of the Bird Yard Big Band who played a selection of rousing music and classics. The mover and shaker of the museum John Hebblewhite had instructed guest speakers to keep their speeches as short as possible, more than one minute would be considered too long, and would attract a gong ringing by John. It has taken eight years to get the first stage of the museum up and running and there big plans over the next few years to expand the building and increase the number of vehicles on display. A resource library has already been commenced. Tatra is a Czech vehicle manufacturer in Kopřivnice. The company was founded in 1850 as Ignaz Schustala & Comp., in 1890 renamed Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau-Fabriksgesellschaft when it became a wagon and carriage manufacturer. In 1897, Tatra produced the first motor car in central Europe, the Präsident automobile. Skoda was established in 1859 under the name Laurin & Klement. This puts Skoda amongst some of the oldest car manufacturers alongside Daimler, Opel, Peugeot and Tatra. ... By 1905, Skoda was creating cars, making it the second oldest car manufacturer in the Czech lands after Tatra. The first model was the Voiturette A. The museum is open on the first Saturday of the Month in the railway heritage precinct Oberon about three hour drive from Canberra via Goulburn and Taralga. Graham Gittins Apologies, I’ll fit some pictures in next month. Helen

OLD NUMBER ONE It was the dream of Canberra Antique and Classic Motor Club member, the late Jim Bruce, to build a replica of the father of the MG Cecil Kimber’s, Old Number One racing special. Cecil Kimber desired to win some motor sport events for himself and kudos for his employer William Morris (later Lord Nuffield). Using the Bullnose Morris as a platform and a talented team of engineers, Kimber managed to squeeze a few extra horsepower out of the engine, resulting in quite a few awards, trophies and medals for the car. Jim’s long held dream of building a replica of old Number One to match his standard Bullnose Morris, became a reality when his son Mark and son-in-law Malcolm Noad took an interest in the project. Mark Bruce said he and Jim used to spend hours looking at photographs of the car trying to work out how it differed from the standard Bullnose Morris. On a visit to England in 1990 Jim had the opportunity to inspect and measure the genuine vehicle at the Heritage Motoring Centre, where he discovered the steering wheel had been lowered, and a revised engine specification had been made, together with a host of smaller modifications to make the special go quicker. Unfortunately Jim became ill before the car was fully finished, but with the help of car club members the car was completed just before he died. Some of the work to get it finished before he died has now been reworked - paying attention to detail. ‘The end result is technically quite accurate and gorgeous to look at,’ according to architect Mark Bruce. ‘Acceleration is brisk and handling acceptable, steering is a bit heavy and the brake pedal needs a hefty foot to have any effect, but it can keep up with modern traffic,’ he added. There is no doubt that this labour of love in memory of a great club member is a wonderful addition to the historic car fleet in Canberra. 29th Annual Dry Lake Racers Australia (DLRA) Speed Week

In early March 2019, some friends and I drove over to Lake Gairdner to see the DLRA Speed Week. The event is held on Lake Gairdner, which is about 150 km north-west of Port Augusta. The Lake is a dry salt pan that measures 160 km long by 50 km wide. The salt itself is about 1.2 metres deep. Lake Gairdner, along with Lake Everard & Lake Harris, form the extent of the Lake Gairdner National Park. The lakes were all once part of an inland sea that stretched all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The races themselves use only one very small part of the southern end of the lake.

The weather out on the lake in March is extreme. We arrived to 44°C, followed by rain and a thunderstorm, (which took out the timing van out on the salt), and then a 15°C morning, with a wind chill of about 10°C. On a hot day it is very hot out on the salt. With the reflected sunlight you get burned very quickly, especially in places where you

normally wouldn’t get sun, as one man wearing baggy pants and boxer shorts found to his cost. There were two camp sites: the one overlooking the lake bed which is pretty basic; and one about six miles away that has showers/toilet blocks and some powered sites. This year was the 29th meeting of the DLRA. It is the only meeting of its kind in Australia, with competitors coming from around Australia, and from overseas. It is becoming increasingly popular with American racers with the continuing deterioration of the Bonneville Speedway. There are two tracks:

A four-mile track with a speed limit of 175 mph for bikes, & 150mph for cars; and

A nine-mile track for anything faster. On this track, vehicles are timed between the 2 and 6-mile markers.

The natural salt surface is very flat, but the organisers smooth the two race tracks further with a long iron bar.

It costs $400 to enter any vehicle, and the number of runs depends on such things as the condition of the track, the weather and the number of other racers lining up. Racers are not guaranteed a particular time slot.

There were probably about 200 entries, most of which were motorbikes. There was a 130 mph Mac Truck from Western Australia, a 120 mph postie bike, an electric car, an electric bike and a 240 mph 1998 Ford Falcon, (slightly modified). Kevin Magee was there, riding a Kawasaki, and acting as guide to a blind rider, Ben Felton on a Kawasaki ZX-10R KRT. Ben’s PB was 156 mph.

IF YOU INSIST MICHAEL Helen Phillips, the Club’s long-serving magazine editor, captured at Wheels 2019. As she is reluctant and unaccustomed to having her photo taken, this one was sneaked one. Thanks a lot Michael and Vanda!! PS: During the stages of sourcing bits and pieces needed to restore a 1924 Dodge, Helen’s husband Bill kindly supplied what he called “a pile of suspension junk”. The Dodge’s rear shackle plates and pins are from that bucket list. 50th Anniversary badges for sale For $20. See Norm Brennan

SELLING OR DISPOSING OF A VEHICLE ON CRS or NSW

HISTORIC REGISTRATION If you have a vehicle registered on either the ACT or NSW concessional systems and you sell or dispose of it in any way, PLEASE advise the Club Registrar, Bob Alexander and Membership Secretary, Joe Vavra. The Club is required to keep a register of all vehicles currently on concessional plates and also inform the Council of ACT Motor Clubs of any changes. The same applies if you have a vehicle on full registration and change it over to concessional registration. Perhaps when your membership renewal comes out next month, you can carefully check that your details are correct and amend the form where necessary before returning it.
