09Nedbank ePay Solutions™
Nedbank Lite
What is it?
Nedbank Lite works on the basis of a redirect on checkout when the cardholder wants to make a payment. The merchant website will make a connection to the secure payment page hosted by Nedbank on the iVeri gateway, presenting cardholders with a secure (https) page where they will enter their cheque or credit card details. The gateway will then process the transaction and return a result code to the merchant’s website where the web developer will convert the result code into a text message to the cardholders informing them of the success or failure of the transaction.
The following Back Office functions can be accessed on the gateway:• Reconciliations – this is a settlement file that provides a list of all transactions for the past six months that make
up the lump sum deposit into merchants’ bank account daily. Merchants can either pull these reports manually by logging into Back Office or they can configure Back Office to email these reports daily so that they can save these reports on their own system.
• Transaction lookup – this is a function where merchants can look up a single transaction based on a number of search criteria. They would never need the full card number to use this function. Only the past six months’ data is available.
• Transaction history – this is a report that provides a full listing of all transactions for a selected period, eg a week or a month. Again, this data is available for the past six months.
• Due to the redirect features, there are a few additional functions in Back Office besides those in the Nedbank Enterprise solution:
– View all transactions for a selected period on screen.– Perform followup transactions without having to capture card details (eg refunds).– Configure Back Office to send email confirmations of successful transactions to the email address of the
merchant’s choice.– Configure Back Office to send email confirmations of successful transaction to the cardholder.
Who’s it for?

Diners Club International and American Express® Credit and Debit Cards.

Notes
Online security
Improving the security surrounding online transactions by authenticating the cardholder at the time of effecting payment for purchases is paramount to the success of online businesses.
3D Secure
What is it?
3D Secure is a cardholder authentication tool that provides a layer of protection for internet merchants and shifts the liability for chargebacksto the card issuer. It is, however, not a silver bullet to the prevention of all possible fraud, as not all cards and card types are enabled by Visa and MasterCard.
Who’s it for?
3D Secure is mandatory in South Africa for merchants who accept internet e-commerce card payments through Nedbank Lite (redirect) and Nedbank Enterprise products.
Features
As electronic commerce grows, the risk of online transactions remains a concern for cardholders, merchants, banks and card associations alike. In an environment where the physical card is not present it creates an opportunity for fraudsters and unscrupulous cardholder to use the situation to their benefit and purchase goods on the internet and then claim no knowledge of the transaction. To address the problem of cardholders denying knowledge of transactions or fraudulent card-not-present usage the card associations have developed cardholder authentication solutions:
Visa Verified by Visa (VbyV) (Visa implementation of 3D Secure)MasterCard SecureCode (MasterCard implementation of 3D Secure)American ExpressSafeKey
Benefits
3D Secure enables merchants to authenticate cardholders. When shopping at a participating merchant’s website, the cardholder enters his or her unique PIN, which is verified by their card issuer who, in turn, digitally signs the transaction.
When a merchant enrols for 3D Secure, the burden of proof for certain transactions shifts from the acquirer and his merchant to the issuer. This is referred to as a liability shift. If the liability of a transaction shifts to the issuer, then the issuer loses his chargeback right on the transaction.
Benefits for the merchant
• Increased consumer confidence and trust of online purchasing security, potentially leading to increased sales volumes.
• Reduced risk of fraudulent transactions.• Reduced a operational expenses due to fewer transaction
disputes.
13Online security
CyberSource
What is it?
CyberSource is a fraud monitoring tool that Nedbank Lite and Nedbank Enterprise merchants can use in addition to 3D Secure. CyberSource uses a series of over 260 category specific tests to validate card transactions, irrespective of the card scheme association.
Nedbank has negotiated preferential pricing with CyberSource for Nedbank Lite and Nedbank Enterprise merchants that are integrated through iVeri.
Features• Easy to implement on Lite and some development
required for Nedbank Enterprise.
• Over 260 checks and validations with an immediate accept/reject decision.
• Only ‘good’ transactions will go for an authorisation.
• Validates all cards, irrespective of association.
• Allows for proactive management of fraud instead of reactive management.
• Easy-to-understand segmentation (new, retail, terms and conditions and airline).
• In the past this revolutionary product was only available to large merchants, but now it is available to all.
Benefits
• Rejected transactions are not even sent for authorisation. The merchant won’t know someone even attempted to commit fraud on their site.
• It is easy to implement on Lite, but will require development on Nedbank Enterprise. Nedbank Enterprise merchants have to carry out some development integration.
• Cardholders don’t need a password to transact. It doesn’t detract from the shopping experience with zero cardholder impact.
• The merchant is charged a small fee per transaction, but no setup costs.
Online security
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard(PCI DSS)
What is it?
The payment card industry has introduced data security standards (PCI DSS) to ensure that all cardholder data is always stored, processed and transmitted securely. This applies to all businesses and organisations involved in the processing, storing and/or transmitting of cardholder data.
PCI DSS has been developed by the major credit card companies, including MasterCard and VISA, to protect cardholder payment data proactively. It covers security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, software design and other critical protective measures.
These standards have been developed due to the rising incidence of stolen cardholder account data. As a result of these thefts, merchants and financial institutions suffer fraud losses and incur unanticipated operational expenses, inconveniencing consumers significantly. To protect your business, your cardholders and the integrity of the payment system your bank might require you to become PCI DSS-compliant.
What is the definition of ‘merchant’?For the purposes of PCI DSS a merchant is defined as any entity that accepts payment cards bearing the logos of any of the five members of the PCI SSC (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa) for the payment of goods and/or services. Note that a merchant that accepts payment cards for the payment for goods and/or services can also be a service provider, if the services sold result in storing, processing or transmitting cardholder data on behalf of other merchants or service providers. For example, an internet service provider is a merchant that accepts payment cards for monthly billing, but also a service provider if it hosts merchants as clients.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?The payment brands may, at their discretion, fine an acquiring bank for PCI DSS compliance violations.
The banks will most likely pass this fine on until it eventually reaches the merchant. Furthermore, the bank can elect to terminate your relationship or increase transaction fees. Penalties are not openly discussed nor widely publicised, but they can be catastrophic to a small business. It is important to be familiar with your merchant account agreement, which should outline your exposure.

American Express Card acceptance
Why accept American Express?
Whether your primary relationship is with Nedbank or not, accepting American Express provides you with access to high-quality customers and more profitable transactions.
American Express acceptance benefits
Most American Express® Cardmembers are professionals or senior managers. It has also been observed that American Express Card transaction values are on average greater than those of other cards.
American Express Cardmembers prefer to use their American Express Cards because of the world-renowned Membership Rewards™ Programme. By accepting American Express Cards, service establishments encourage repeat business from these Cardmembers. Cardmembers trust the American Express brand and are loyal to it to such an extent that some will go elsewhere if the card is not accepted.
American Express Cardmembers typically look for signs at the counter or cash register or at any other payment points on websites to determine whether a merchant accepts American Express.
A large number of international visitors with American Express Cards flock to South Africa, looking out for businesses that accept American Express Cards. Generally visitors from abroad paying with American Express Cards spend more per transaction than other cardholders and return more often to these businesses, resulting in repeat sales for the merchant.
American Express acceptance does cost more, but it brings benefits that more than make up for that higher cost.
For more information on becoming an American Express merchant contact the Merchant Helpdesk on 011 667 8173 or visit americanexpress.co.za.
The Nedbank Greenbacks SHOP Card, which is American Express-branded, automatically converts Nedbank Greenbacks rewards points into cash directly onto the Card – a first in South Africa.
Your customers now have the ease and convenience of spending their rewards in your store, provided you accept American Express Cards. What’s more, all of this is at no cost to your business, as you pay zero merchant service commission fees on Nedbank Greenbacks SHOP Card transactions.
