    Detailed Frequently Ask Questions

    Overview

Why did Microsoft change the name of SkyDrive Pro? Why OneDrive?

In July of 2013, British Sky Broadcasting and Microsoft were pleased to reach a settlement in a trademark case that

concluded in Microsofts agreement to change the SkyDrive name. While this was the impetus to change the name, it gave

us an opportunity to reflect on how the service has evolved since its launch and pick a new name and branding that is

reflective of the service and what it offers today.

Whats the difference between OneDrive and OneDrive for Business?

OneDrive is for consumers to sync their personal files across their devices and to the cloud. OneDrive is available free to

individuals and also as part of Office 365 Home Premium (including 20GB of extra storage).

OneDrive for Business is online storage for organizations. Its the place where employees can store, sync, and share their

files across multiple devices with ease and security. With OneDrive for Business you can collaborate with others in real

time and edit documents from virtually anywhere via a web browser using Office Online (forrmerly Office WebApps).

Accessing files from multiple devices (including Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOS, and Android devices) is a cinch with

native Office Online integration with OneDrive for Business. Not only does OneDrive for Business deliver the frictionless

user experiences that employees expect in a file sync solution, its backed by a trusted service that provides enterprise

grade content management, compliance, and administrative controls.

What is changing in the OneDrive for Business service? Is OneDrive for Business

    different than SkyDrive Pro?

OneDrive for Business delivers all the same great capabilities and features of SkyDrive Pro, but OneDrive for Business gives

customers access to Office Online and allows employees to work better together with online co-authoring functionalities.

As with the rest of Office 365, Microsoft will continue to innovate and add new capabilities to OneDrive for Business. Get

updates on additional announcements by subscribing to the OneDrive blog.

    Pricing and Licensing

When can customers start using OneDrive for Business?

Customers can start using OneDrive for Business today. Currently, OneDrive for Business is available to all existing

customers with subscriptions in qualifying Office 365 suites (E1 E4, Small Business, Small Business Premium and Midsize

Business) and the standalone SharePoint Online plans. Customers who have already used SkyDrive Pro as part of an Office

365 plan experience no disruption in service when the name change takes place on the online service.

New customers purchasing these SKUs will also get OneDrive for Business.

Starting April 1st, 2014, OneDrive for Business with Office Online (formerly Office Web Apps) stand alone offering is

available on the price list and customers will be able to add it as a stand alone offering. Once the service is activated,

customers have the flexibility to configure various identity synchronization options (e.g. none, directory & password sync,

or ADFS) depending on their installation and preferences.

and Professional Plus) customers with Software Assurance. Office with SA customers that sign up for OneDrive for Business

during this 6-month promo period will get this price for the term of their agreement. Once purchased customers will gain

access to Office Online as well and will be able to access Office applications online and use online co-authoring with

    coleagues.

Will users be able to share files with other people in their organization who are not

    licensed for OneDrive for Business?

No. All internal users that are accessing OneDrive for Business will need to be licensed OneDrive for Business or

SharePoint Online users. External users, however, do not need a license to access documents shared with them. Definition

of an external user is available here.

Are customers required to have SharePoint Online licenses to use OneDrive for

    Business?

No. Customers can get OneDrive for Business by purchasing the new standalone SKU. OneDrive for Business is also

included in other Office 365 plans (E1 E4, Small Business, Small Business Premium and Midsize Business).

How does the OneDrive for Business with Office Online (standalone) compare with the

current SkyDrive Pro capability within the Office 365 suites (E1 E4, Small Business,

Small Business Premium, and Midsize Business) or SharePoint Online (Plan 1/Plan 2)?

The OneDrive for Business standalone SKU offers the same core capabilities as OneDrive for Business that is part of the

Office 365 suite one place to store, sync and share files and editing through Office Online. Users get 25GB of personal

storage and can access their files from anywhere across multiple devices and platforms. The OneDrive for Business

standalone SKU is offered for customers interested only in file sync and share capabilities. Customers looking for more

integrated productivity or advanced capabilities across the Office 365 suite (e.g. email, calendar, presence, IM, Voice, team

sites, intranet portals, advanced search, workflow, document and records management, etc.), should evaluate one of the

Office 365 suites or SharePoint Online plans. Microsoft will also continue to deliver more rich, cross-suite capabilities.

What are the differences in capabilities betweenthe new OneDrive for Business offer vs.

the existing SharePoint Plan 1 and Plan 2 offers?

Can customer try OneDrive for Business? Customers wishing to try OneDrive for Business can use the existing E3 trial.

Why is the new OneDrive for Business SKU priced at $5/user/month while SharePoint

Plan 1 is only $3? The new OneDrive for Business includes full Office Online (formerly Office Web Apps) capabilities that enable full fidelity

viewing and editing of Office document formats, while SharePoint Plan 1 provides viewing only. For many customers that

are looking just for a files sync/share solution, OneDrive for Business pricing of $5 is very competitive with other solutions

such as Dropbox and Box that are priced in the $15/user/month range, and the Office Online capability differentiates us

from the other providers. Customers that are looking for a team collaboration solution but do not need Office Online can

consider SharePoint Online Plan 1 at $3/user/month.

Do existing users of SkyDrive Pro need to take any action moving to OneDrive for

Business? Office 365 or SharePoint Online customers do not need to take any action. With the release of SharePoint 2013 SP1 the

new name will change online and in the desktop sync client. There may be a period of time where SkyDrive Pro still

appears in the UI but will change over time. Apps are expected to be released with the updated branding in the same

    timeframe.

  • 7

SharePoint on-premises customers will need to install SP1 in order for the new name to propagate through the product.

Once installed, customers will be able to add the online service by activating OneDrive for Business via the admin console

(as long as they have purchased subscriptions to one of the Office 365 SKUs that include OneDrive for Business).

Do customers have to upgrade their SharePoint on-premises installation to SharePoint

2013 in order to use OneDrive for Business?

For seamless integration of OneDrive for Business in the cloud, customers should consider upgrading to SharePoint 2013

SP1, as customers of older versions of SharePoint or customers who have not installed SharePoint 2013 SP1 will not be

able to take advantage of the seamless top navigation bar integration and redirection of OneDrive to the cloud.

Customers who own older versions of SharePoint Server (2010 or 2007) can use OneDrive for Business by purchasing the

standalone SKU and start using the service in the cloud. Additional care will be required to ensure that on-premises users

of SharePoint can discover where their OneDrive for Business document libraries are.

What can I tell customers who are concerned about the future of on-premises file

sharing given our focus on the cloud?

  • 9

Microsoft does not operate under the assumption that one size fits all, but rather are committed to providing customers

with options (on-premises, cloud, hybrid) that best suit their business needs. We remain committed to delivering support

and solutions for our customers whether in the cloud or on premise, through cumulative updates, future service packs and

content to ensure that customers will continue to have the support they need to ensure continued success and benefit of

    constant innovation.

How I can be sure that confidential information of my organization is secured in the

cloud? OneDrive for business is part of Office 365. The data centers we use for Office 365 meet the highest industry regulations

(HIPAA, ISO 27001, EU Model Clauses, FISMA). In addition, Microsoft encrypts files in transit and are working to have file

encrypted at rest by the end of 2014.

OneDrive for Business also adheres to the base permissioning model of SharePoint, enabling even deeper governance of

    documents and information.

How is OneDrive for Business different than SharePoint Sites?

OneDrive for Business is meant for the individual to more easily manage, store and share their personal work files without

having to work through IT. The user can then by default access it online and offline across their devices at work, at home

and on the road. SharePoint Sites are based on the needs of the team with common features used like list, project

timeline, tasks and even sub-sites. The admistration of Sites is often managed by someone who is not on the team, which

    can sometimes be less flexible.

Is there a reason for Yammer users to use OneDrive for Business? OneDrive for Business offers the ability to Post documents to yammer feeds. This enables conversations around a

document, and also enables collaboration on that document while retainig it in OneDrive for Business. If a user is looking

to keep managing the file it is preferable to keep the file on OneDrive for Business and post a link to yammer.

Is SharePoint Enterprise Search available across the repositories of hybrid solution

which includes OneDrive for Business in the cloud?

Admin can be set up as an option in the SharePoint Server 2013 enterprise Search Center to return only search results

from OneDrive for Business that is in Office 365. This option, called a search vertical, will provide an easy way for a user of

on-premises SharePoint Server 2013 to search only selective items in OneDrive for Business in Office 365 for a match to

the user's search query. Then admin can add a link in the enterprise Search Center for the new search vertical.

What do customers of SharePoint 2013 on-premises need to do to start using

OneDrive for Business in the cloud?

    1. Upgrade to SharePoint 2013 SP1

    2. Sign-up for an Office 365 plan (can also be OneDrive for Business only)

    3. Admin should switch on OneDrive in the control and add users

    4. Admin will have 3 options for setting up the OneDrive for Business experience for users

    a. The quick and simple way is just to switch the service on and assign users. Users will have two separate

repositories - one in the cloud and one on-premises. They will need to sign in separately for each of these

    (DirSync only).

    b. If desired, admin can improve the user experience and synchronize user profiles and passwords, so users

profiles in Office 365 and their passwords are verified (DirSync and Password Sync).

    c. Single sign-on experience - full ADFS deployment allows users to have a single sign-on and ability to share

documents with users that have not been added to the cloud (ADFS\SSO).

  • 10

Please review the following blog post for more details.

Can a customer who used the OneDrive for Business trial version upgrade to a paid

version and keep the environment as is? Yes.

Are there any availability limitations for OneDrive for Business by geography?

OneDrive for Business is available in any geography where Office 365 is offered and the OneDrive for Business brand-

name is localized. See here for geographical availability.

    Partner Opportunity

How do partners sell OneDrive for Business?

OneDrive for Business will be available for partner sale via all channels as listed above in the pricing/licensing section of

    this document.

Does OneDrive for Business represent a partner opportunity?

OneDrive for Business gives partners a new way to help their on-premises customers begin their journey to the cloud, on

their own terms, with an initial, highly demanded workload. By decoupling the SharePoint migration conversation from a

cloud file sharing one, customers now have an easy way to get started with files in the cloud. Partners will have

additional opportunities with some of the same service needs as with a typical Office 365 deployment around identity &

policy, management, and adoption. Additionally, new hybrid scenarios specific to search, taxonomy / metadata, and

eDiscovery will present themselves, upgrade needs, as well as content migration from other existing internal systems.

There is also an opportunity with customers that already have one workload in the cloud such as Exchange Online to add

online file storage, syncing and sharing that works seamlessly with email. For ISVs building and migrating apps to the

new app model for Office and SharePoint, OneDrive will offer interesting new scenarios that can be incorporated into their

    applications.

Will OneDrive for business be available as part of my existing MPN competency

Internal Use Rights (IUR) software? Yes, OneDrive for business will be part of the standard competency IUR, just as it is today.

    Sales Guidance

What are the business drivers for selling OneDrive for Business?

In todays world, people are increasingly blending their work and personal tasks across a broad set of devices (desktop,

tablet, mobile). Theyre leading the trend of bringing their own technology into the workplace and requiring their

organizations to quickly respond to their demand for quick and easy file storage and sharing wherever and whenever they

need it. Given the plethora of commodity cloud storage services available, they bring new potential risks into the

workplace to those organizations that are unable to keep up with this demand.

  • 11

Through OneDrive for Business, Microsoft responds to this demand by delivering an easy to use, file storage and sharing

experience built into SharePoint that meets the challenges of data security and compliance with internal governance.

Moreover, the new cloud storage provisioning features of SharePoint 2013 and the OneDrive for Business SKU provide a

straightforward pathway for customers planning to move into the cloud by addressing the immediate file

    storage/sharingworkload scenario.

Which customers should be the main targets for selling OneDrive for Business?

Partners should mention OneDrive for Business to any customer who is a target for Office 365. Partners should discuss

which of the Office 365 plans and OneDrive for Business offerings (standalone SKU, add-on to SharePoint 2013 on-

premises, or as a part of Office 365 plan) are the best solutions to meet their particular needs.

The main scenarios and their matching solutions are:

OneDrive for Business with Office Online

    1. No cloud EPG\CA customers with SharePoint Server 2007/2010 on-premises

    a. Can benefit from adding the service right away with no need for extended upgrade and migration

planning and upfront cost. Helps to decouple SharePoint from the cloud adoption conversation.

Customers are already dealing with employees putting content into other online repositories (e.g. Box,

Dropbox). OneDrive for Business will help customers choose our cloud with files as the first workload, and

helps them decide on a timeline for broader SharePoint adoption online.

    b. Can benefit from better content management and compliance, by using a service that is enterprise ready

    c. Can benefit from the promotion if they have EA or Select (with SA)

    2. No cloud SMB customers with Office Professional Plus and SA benefits and no SharePoint licenses

    a. Can benefit from the Open VL promo

    b. With the SKU will get access to Office Online as well and edit rights in Office Online

    c. Can on-ramp to the cloud with very low upfront cost

    d. Can start getting more familiar with OneDrive and then consider adding additional Office 365 capabilities

    3. Some cloud customers with Office 365 Pro Plus or P1 plans

What are the competing products and how should we position OneDrive for Business

    for success in the market?

Among the many cloud storage vendors, Dropbox, Box and Google Drive represent Microsofts biggest threats. They offer

capable consumer and business oriented products that are easy for employees to activate and bring into the workplace.

In competing against these vendors, differentiate OneDrive for Business and position it as:

The one place for employees to store all their work files, which is simple to use and access - a robust, fully

featured and intuitive file sync and sharing service that includes all of the core file storage and sync capabilities

that our competitors provide, but we go many steps further with deep, native integration with Office and access

    almost everywhere.

Not only as a files, sync and share solution, but as a solution that enables employees to work better, together.

OneDrive for Business ships with Office Online, enabling users to collaborate in real-time right within Office in

their browser! Users can collaborate on their files using Office client applications if they choose.

A solution that best addresses security, compliance and privacy requirements and reduces IT and BDM

concernsover managing yet another sile repository, while giving employees a necessary solution. OneDrive for

Business offers a spectrum of capabilities, and is compliant with world-class industry standards, ensuring that

    employee data is protected.

A solution that can easily be extended beyond the basic file sync and share capability.Since OneDrive for Business

is also available as part of the Office 365 and SharePoint Online suites, it offers added benefits of rich content

management, workflow, eDiscovery, and a whole set of integrated user and admin experiences across the

    productivity stack.

OneDrive for Business is not a commodity cloud file storage service like many competing solutions. It is about helping

users be more productive using the tools they use most while giving IT the controls and management they need to be

    compliant and cost effective.

How does OneDrive for Business fit into Office 365 customer conversations?

Customers seeking to implement cloud-based collaboration solutions with Office 365 are looking for a clear pathway that

allows them to achieve quick return on effort and a solid starting point from which to build on. OneDrive for Business

meets the needs of one of the most common workloads in demand today from employees - file storage and sharing.

OneDrive for Business is the fastest onramp to Office 365, allowing customers to get started easily with files as their first

workload, decoupled from broader SharePoint deployment considerations.

Should customer cloud discussions be led with OneDrive for Business?

First, discuss with the customers challenges of file storage and managing and controling FSS solutions employees bring

into the organization. Demonstrate to the customer how OneDrive for Business is an enterprise grade solution, integrated

with familiar Office and simple and fast onramp for getting started in the cloud.

Next, sell the user-centric features and the benefits of organizational control that the OneDrive for Business service and

    SharePoint 2013 platform provides.

Then, frame the customer discussion by leading with the broader Office365 value proposition including

comprehensiveness of the ECM capabilities of SharePoint. This will help to distinguish our offering from cloud storage

    competitors.
