Our Club History
In 1988, a group of 20 decisive ladies, successful in their professional and business careers and beautiful in body, mind and spirit, chose to share their blessings with the more depressed communities around them in Muntinlupa. Thus was born the Zonta Club of Muntinlupa & Environs.
One of over 40 Zonta Clubs in the Philippines today, ZCME is at the forefront of projects aimed at empoweringwomen through educational, social, economic and political initiatives.
Almost a decade after the club was chartered. Zonta International launched one its most important service andadvocacy campaign , ZISVAW or Zonta International Strategies On Violence Against Women during the ZontaInternational Convention held in Detroit, Michigan in 1996. It is in this context that we relate why SAGIP wasestablished as the centerpiece project of Zonta Club MUNTINLUPA. Delegate and incoming District Gov.Brenda L. Tanjutco learned the imperatives of intervening on the prevalent violence perpetrated against womenespecially the marginalized ones during the training held there. With this experience, she prepared a projectproposal to establish a crisis response center for the women of MUNTINLUPA and presented this to then MayorIgnacio BUNYE MUNTINLUPA. The club officers headed by President Laly Aldeguer were present during thepresentation and the approval of the Mayor to establish a crisis response center in the city. His executiveassistant, Vicky Bunye who had worked in a crisis center on violence against women in Hawaii convened variousdepartment heads and the officers of the club to undergo an intensive training and foster a program ofcooperation among the partners of SAGIP or SAKLOLO at GABAY ng INA at PAMILYA. This is one of thefew existing VAW centers in the Philippines and in the world where Zonta clubs have been established.
SAGIP is a 24/7 crisis response center on violence against women and children. Upon the rescue of the victim, Itoffers an intake report which when so warranted becomes the basis for investigation and the filing of charges bythe police against the perpetrator. It provides free legal services and psychological therapy to the clients and freeshelter for 2 to 4 weeks. After this period, they are sent to institutions which provide long term haven and carefor the women and children.
ZCME was awarded The Outstanding Award in SERVICE by Zonta International in 1990 Dallas, TexasInternational Convention. Zonta International also recognized its continuing service as a model project on VAWwhen it received one of the three service project awards in the ZI Florida Convention and in the 2015 District 17Conference in Bangkok, it was elevated to the Hall of Flame Awards which is reserved for continuing excellentservices rendered by a Zonta club.
