One Tree Hill Progress Association ~ President’s Report

Dear Residents,

I hope everyone had a restful and happy Christmas/New Year’s break; hopefully 2021 will be a much better year and things can get back to (a new?) normal. My 2020 certainly finished in a blaze - literally. Two people on a rampage crashed a vehicle through my fences and into my neighbour’s property starting a fire around 7pm. It took 35 CFS fire units several hours to bring the fire under control as it was swept along by strong SE winds. However, not before my neighbours and I lost about 25Ha of grasslands and native vegetation, much of which has been planted as part of the City of Playford’s Buffers to Bushland project over many years. We are incredibly grateful to the CFS volunteers, who I am sure had much better things to do on NYE!

All townsfolk would have experienced numerous power outages and no water in the past few months. Progress has been actively progressing our concerns with the lack of town water during power outages and we have struggled to get relevant government departments to understand the core issues. We recently met with reps from SA Water, the Minister for Police, Emergency Services and Correctional Services, the Minister for Environment and Water, the CFS and local MP Paula Luethen and again reiterated our concerns. We also met with King candidate Rhiannon Pearce and the Member for Spence, Nick Champion and explained how the township could effectively be helpless in the face of a precautionary shutdown of power by SAPN. Even more so if telecommunication services are lost. SA Water said that the $250k upgrade of the electrical switchboard for the Water Pumping Station is scheduled to be completed mid-2021 and that it would only take about another $50k to provide a permanent emergency generator to ensure water supply to the township in the event of an electrical outage. $50k seems a small amount to guarantee continuity of water supply in an emergency. There is more to this, so feel free to come along to our next meeting if you have questions. Hopefully, we will get an answer from the Minister’s office soon…

In reflection at the end of 2020, I am concerned that so few locals are willing to join the OTH Progress Association. I appreciate that everything has a history, but the future of One Tree Hill is ahead of us, not behind. No town (or district) business is a member of our Association; I find that perplexing, as historically Progress Associations were set up to focus on the social and economic growth of a town/region. It is easier to influence an organisation from within its ranks. Our next meeting will be held at 7:30pm on Thursday 11Feb21; everyone is welcome to attend.

Kind Regards,

Steve Huckstepp President, One Tree Hill Progress Association [email protected]

One Tree Hill CFS ~ January Report

First off, Happy New Year from all the members of the One Tree Hill CFS. Unfortunately, December took up where November left off, with several large callouts over the Christmas New Year period in-cluding four major fires in the One Tree Hill area.

The largest of these was on Sunday the 29th of November we were called to a large grass fire burning in the gully between Craigmore and Uley roads and threatening urban properties at the top of Craigmore as well as larger rural properties on Craigmore Road. The fire was a close call for many residents who witnessed the unusual sight of fire bombers working directly over their properties. The fire took several hours to control due to difficult terrain and involved strike teams from the Light and Barossa groups.

Fireworks reportedly dropped from a passing vehicle were responsible for the next large blaze on the 30th of December on Rutland Road in Sampson Flat. OTH crews were quickly on the scene and managed to contain the blaze to around 7 hectares. 17 vehicles from OTH and surrounding brigades were initially dispatched to this callout which was raised to a Level 3 callout.

The following evening, New Year’s Eve, we were called to another large grass fire on Medlow Road in Uleybury around 7pm. This one was started by a car which had been driven through a fence igniting grass in the paddock. This call was eventually raised to a 4th alarm and was declared controlled around 9 pm. Many crews were still on the fireground until after midnight, which is not the best way to see in the New Year.

The fourth major blaze was late on the 8th of January in the Little Para River gully between Coomurra Drive in Salisbury Heights and Williams Road in Hillbank. The fire was declared under control the next morning however very steep terrain in the area made parts of the fire inaccessible and it was several days before crews were able to deem the fire safe.

During the two-month period, the Brigade also sent crews on Strike teams to Roseworthy, Williamstown, and the large fire in Lucindale. Add to these the usual calls for trees down and smaller fires in the surrounding areas as well as an unusual Hazmat incident for leaking gas and it has been a busy summer so far. Late rains in October and November means that the fuel load is still high in some parts and with five more weeks of summer to come and more hot weather forecast, please be careful in the coming days.

There was an error in the last issue where I reported “27/10 – Yattalunga: Rubbish or waste fire, no-one monitoring”. As with a lot of the callouts, I did not attend this fire personally but rather reported based on the contents of the pager message. The owner of the property has asked me to clarify that he was in fact in attendance at this fire. I apologise for any embarrassment this may have caused.

Playford Council ~ Local Councillor's Report

Dear Fellow Ratepayers and Residents,

I hope everyone has had a great start to 2021 and may it be a better year than 2020.

On the 14th December 2020, we had the opportunity to meet with the Member for Spence, Nick Champion and the new Labor Candidate for King, Rhiannon Pearce to further discuss the One Tree Hill water supply concerns. It was another opportunity to discuss the town’s vulnerability to a loss of water supply in the event of a power outage. Thank you to Rhiannon Pearce and Nick champion for taking an interest in our town and for the follow up letter to the CEO of SA Water.

On the 14th January 2021, the advocacy for an onsite back up power supply continued. Steven Huckstepp (President OTH Progress Association), Ian Slater and I attended a meeting kindly organised by Paula Luethen MP at her office with representatives from CFS, SA Water, Minister Spiers’ office and Minister Tarzia’s office. The meeting was an excellent opportunity to clear confusion and ensure that everyone was on the same page. We are now awaiting a response on funding by the end of the month (January 2021).

Did you have your say on our verge management for Fire Safety and Verge Mowing within the City of Playford? If you missed it, I would not be surprised. Why would the community engagement seeking feedback be so different on this topic? It is clear to me that we need to do better. I am seeking that the City of Playford engage with a group of residents to improve our verge management. I am also seeking expressions of interest from community members. Can you assist? Please register your interest with me.

The Humbug Scrub Fire Siren has been raised with me as it is currently not working. Growing up in the area, I appreciate the fire sirens and how important they are to the local community. While the siren is not a council responsibility, I’d appreciate hearing the community’s interest in maintaining the siren.

Following up on the power outage issue with the Uleybury fire on Sunday the 29th November 2020, SAPN have given me a call acknowledging my complaint and will be responding to the questions raised. Thank you SAPN. I’ve been unable to receive any information or updates from Telstra on the interruption to their service during the power outage.

Don’t miss out! Community Development and Events Grant Round 2. Now open to non-government and non-profit organisations, closing Friday 26th February 2021. Application form and guidelines are available on the website www.playford.sa.gov.au

I’m looking forward to the OTH Markets in February and hearing your local concerns.

Best wishes and regards,

Cr David Kerrison

OTH Young Author Releases Book 3 in Meerkat Series

Young OTH author Jordan Hawkey has been increasing his writing out-put lately, completing his 3rd book in the Twins of Legend series, an ex-citing fantasy adventure tale about a pair of meerkats, in December.

After editing, review by young readers, and artwork was completed, the book was published and released at an official book launch at the Gawl-er Library on 20th January. Attend-ance at the book launch exceeded Jordan’s expectations, and he feels lucky to be supported by so many followers and avid young readers.

Once again the cover artwork for this book looks incredible, created by talented freelance artist Kate Verner, who went to school with Jordan at Trinity College.

Jordan’s books are targeted to engage young readers age 8-14, and the format of the printing has been chosen to make it easier for readers with dyslexia to follow. If you see Jordan around town, have a chat about his books, he would love to tell you all about it.

New Year’s Resolutions

A Mental Health & Wellbeing Article by One Tree Hill Local Natasha Steen

While we didn’t have a January edition of The Grapevine - never fear… I am still going to offer you my rant on New Year’s resolutions! Studies tell us that 80% of New Years resolutions do not stick! The reasons for this are varied but I will share my views on where people can go wrong. It seems to me that the opportunity to make real change is missed if 1) – the goal you set is too vague and broad or 2) – you are putting in place the wrong strategies!

If you are setting yourself big, vague challenges it will be very difficult to know where to start and how to reward yourself. It helps to write things down, make your goals measurable and start with baby steps. There truly is an art to doing this stuff and many people need help to step through it. Try to break your bigger ideal outcome up into mini stages and feel good about meeting each stage. Number 2 is what really troubles me – especially when I see and hear of people spending money on solutions that are unlikely to result in long standing success.

After many years of counselling and coaching I have noticed that people will struggle to bring about any significant change if they don’t first understand their own “personal make up” a little better. By “personal make up” I mean things like – what you value, your beliefs, habits, greatest fears and your general mindset. I see many people who want to move away from challenges but their “own make up” is perpetuating these things to continue. It is useful to look at this via a few examples:

Wash up of this is - I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. These are made at a time that is associated with hype, holidays (not usual routine) and expectations that may not be well thought through and owned by you. Instead, I like to think about the past year and what has gone well, what could be different and a few general themes I might consider focussing on. Yes there is nothing wrong with goal setting but consider timing, mindset, attitude and values to make real change.

OTH Vets Say ~ Watch Out For Heatstroke

Article & Photos provided by EquiClinic, One Tree Hill

Now that we are in the middle of summer and experiencing some rather hot days, we need to keep a careful eye on our pets to ensure that Heatstroke (or Hyperthermia) isn’t a problem for them.

Extreme temperatures can affect all of our pets large or small. It is very important to take into account outside temperatures, when it comes to exercising our furry friends or if they are outside for any amount of time. Other factors can come into play such as leaving pets in hot cars, inadequate supply of water and shade. Age is also a factor when it comes to the risk of heatstroke as is being overweight or specific breeds, such as brachycephalic dogs (bulldogs, pugs, and other flat faced breeds).

Dogs and Cats produce minimal sweat through glands in their foot pads, so instead they pant to stay cool. Sometimes panting isn’t enough and their body temperature rises.

Another danger is burnt paws if they are walked on ground that is just too hot. Before walking your dog on a hot day place the palm of your hand on the ground outside and you cannot leave it their comfortably for more than 5 seconds, then the ground is too hot for your dog to walk on!

Signs of Heatstroke (Hyperthermia) can be mild to severe, but any of the following signs should be seen by a veterinarian. In the early stages of Heatstroke your pets would start to show signs of restlessness trying to keep cool, excessive panting, sweaty foot pads, drooling. If not removed from the hot environment quickly more sever signs can develop, such as

reddened gums, vomiting, diahorrea, disorientation, unconsciousness and possible death.

As soon as any of the above signs are seen, you must immediately try to cool your let down, run a cool shower over your pet, especially around the back of the neck and head, use wet towels socked in cool water to place over your pet, let them drink if they want without having to force them and take them to your nearest vet clinic to seek veterinary attention.

Our larger pets can also suffer from Heatstroke, such as horses and farm animals. Horses can develop heatstroke if being worked in exces-sively hot or humid temperatures. Signs such as increased sweating, restlessness, rapid pulse, heavy breathing, excessive salivating, muscle spasms, collapse. If any of these symptoms are shown, cooling is necessary in the form of wet towels and hosing down with cool water to bring the horse’s body temperature down, also it is important to seek veterinary attention.

Remember keep your pets cool, sheltered and with plenty of water this summer!

What’s Flowering In My Garden?

Wow, I am enjoying the mild but dry Summer weather and so are the trees and shrubs. Whilst we have not had much Summer rain, the coming hot spike in the temperature will test the plants survival strategies and some mulching hand watering needs to be achieved urgently. Callistemons Injune and Pink Champagne are in flower, both offering some colour throughout the garden. All types of bees and Honeyeaters are appreciating the supply of pollen and nectar.

Bursaria spinosa, known locally as Christmas Bush as well as Sweet Bursaria, has been flowering for the past six weeks and the sprays of flowers have been just lovely. This tallish shrub, with a maximum width of about 1.5m for a mature plant, will grow to approximately 2m high. It can vary considerably in shape and is often seen as a dense shrub but in other places it is an open upright spindly plant. Sweet Bursaria has spiny, prickly branches that support small bright green leaves and when handling this plant it is best to wear a pair of study garden gloves. Sprays of sweetly scented off white to cream small five petalled flowers are displayed at the end of it’s branches during the flowering time. The kangaroos absolutely love this plant. They munch away on the branches and delight in devouring the new growth that this plant will put on after they have tip pruned the plant. They can almost kill this plant and it may be worthwhile placing a wire guard around the plant for a few years for it to recover. They don’t appear to eat the flower sprays which allows the many insects and Honeyeaters the opportunity to feed on the scented flowers. As the lovely flowers mature and drop off, the pale green seed pods appear and grow, changing colour to a greenish yellow. When mature the seed pods are a strong reddish rusty brown shade and seeds inside the seed capsules will rattle in the breeze. Seed is dispersed on really hot days providing a feast for ants and seed eating parrots and pigeons. This hardy shrub, which grows throughout Humbug Scrub and nearby locations, is available from various Native Plant Nurseries. Plant a few together in a group and enjoy what Bursaria spinosa has to offer; small green leaves, lovely scented flowers and interesting colourful seeds pods.

Just beautiful.
