This issue of SIKARAN TALIBA is dedicated to one of the most active regions of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines - Region V, popularly known as the Bicol Region.

Known in the political map of the Philippines as REGION V, it is made up of six provinces,

namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. The

region has 7 cities, 107 municipalities with 3,471 Barangays. Legazpi City is the regional center.

Page 5: ONE OF THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD - Sikaran Pilipinas · the perfect cone in the background as "lumba-lumba" play in the foreground - only in the bicol region photo by mantas-marangal

5

As of the Census of 2010, the population of the Bicol Region is approximately 51/2 million. In

the pre-Historic times, the region was known as Ibalon.

Whenever the term Bicol Region finds its way in any conversation in the Philippines, or

anywhere in the presence of Filipinos, the first thing that comes to mind is Mayon Volcano.

There are several active volcanoes in the Philippines, but the most famous is Mayon

Volcano. Mayon rises about 8,100 feet above Albay Gulf and has very steep upper slopes

capped by a small summit crater. Several towns have been devastated by the frequent eruptions

of the volcano. The eruption in 1814, reduced the Cagsawa Church into ruins. Presently only the

church tower is standing.

In the eruption of 1897, which lasted for seven days, the village of Bacacay was

buried under almost 50 feet of lava. In the Municipality of Libon, about 100 people died

of suffocation or were buried under rock fall or lava.

Page 6: ONE OF THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD - Sikaran Pilipinas · the perfect cone in the background as "lumba-lumba" play in the foreground - only in the bicol region photo by mantas-marangal

6

Mayon Volcano is the main

landmark of the Province of Albay

and is geographically shared by the

eight cities and municipalities of

Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig,

Guinobatan, Ligao, Tabaco,

Malilipot, and Santo Domingo. Like

the other volcanoes around the

Pacific Ocean, Mayon is part of the

Pacific Ring of Fire. It is located on

the eastern side of Luzon, near the

Philippine Trench (Deep).

There are other volcanoes in

the region. They are Mount Isarog,

Mount Iriga, Mount Malinao, Mount

Masaraga, Pocdol Mountains, and

Bulusan Volcano in the Province of

Sorsogon, . As we go to press,

Bulusan Volcano and Mayon

Volcano are showing signs of

eruption.

Agriculture is the number one

economic component of the region

with rice and corn as the chief

seasonal crops. Commercial fishing

is the number two economic

component, followed by the

permanent crops coconut, abaca,

banana, coffee, and jackfruit.

Tourism is also on the rise

causing the construction of several

upscale resorts. The completion of

the Southern Luzon International Airport is hoped to further boost tourism in the region.

The active volcanoes in the Philippines (Name in RED). Mayon is the most

popular. Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, Mayon Volcano in August 2014, Taal

Volcano in 1977, Canlaon (also spelled Kanlaon) in July 2006, Mount Ragang in

1916, and Hibok-Hibok in 1951.

BRIEF HISTORY OF SIKARAN IN BICOL

By: Mantas Dalubhasa Elpidio Seletaria, Jr.

8th Degree Black Belt

World Sikaran Brotherhood International Coordinator

As narrated by

Xavier Paje

The word “SIKARAN” literally means kick. It is an original martial art of Filipino foot

fighting that is unique in the Filipino culture. It originated in Baras, in the Province of Rizal. It is

now taught in every corner of the Philippines and even in other countries. However, how did it

become to be so popular in the Bicol Region?

In the 1960's, the martial arts of Judo and Karate were becoming very popular. An active

Judo-ka, member of the Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA) and self-taught Karate-ka,

named Romeo Paje, was not only sports-minded, but also high-spirited. He dreamed of making

the Bicol Region famous not only because of Mayon Volcano but also as the martial arts capital

of that part of the country.

Paje established a backyard gym where he invited the martial artists in his community to

train and teach the youngsters of the neighborhood. Through the several like sports-minded

people who returned to the region from other parts of the country and the world, they brought

with them their experience in the martial arts. Some brought back Karate. Romeo Paje was so

interested in Karate he contacted as many practitioners of Karate in Bicol as he can. He and a

good friend named Ernesto Parian, also a Karate enthusiast formed the Kapisanang Karate ng

Guinobatan, together with other Karate practitioners like Jaime Ardales and Jun delos Angeles.

When Romeo Paje moved to Manila for a job venture, he left leadership of the group

under Ernesto Parian.

In Manila, Romeo Paje sought further instruction and in his search, he met Emmanuel

Querubin, Jaime Geronimo, and Captain Meliton C. Geronimo at the headquarters of the Karate

(Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines in Pasay City. He trained diligently and earnestly in

Sikaran. Paje learned all he can, not only the techniques of the art, but also the manner in

which technical details are treated and how the basic physical movements are used in a method

of accomplishing a desired aim.

Page 9: ONE OF THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD - Sikaran Pilipinas · the perfect cone in the background as "lumba-lumba" play in the foreground - only in the bicol region photo by mantas-marangal

9

Paje affiliated his group, the Kapisanang Karate ng Guinobatan, with the Karate (Sikaran)

Brotherhood of the Philippines. While training under Captain Meliton Geronimo, Paje learned

about Sikaran (the Filipino style of foot fighting). The more Captain Geronimo explained

Sikaran to Paje, the more intrigued he became. Paje learned that although Sikaran was similar to

Karate, it was purely a Filipino art, born and bred in the Town of Baras, in the Province of Rizal.

Captain Geronimo further explained to Paje the use of the term Karate (with Sikaran in

parenthesis), in order to join the Asian Karate Association, which considers Sikaran as a style of

Philippine Karate, as it does Tang Soo Doo as a style of Korean Karate..

Like all the members of the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines (KBP), Paje

was comfortable in learning Sikaran, while being identified as a member of the KBP. His move

to Manila paved the way to a better understanding of what needs to be done to make the Bicol

Region the martial arts capital, in that part of the country.

While in Manila, Paje attended all the seminars, clinics, tournaments, and martial arts

events that he can. He wanted to learn the mechanics of as many events as he can. He visited as

many private clubs and schools as he was allowed to. He knew that in order for the Bicol Region

to be the Martial Arts Capital in that part of the country he needed to invite martial artists from

various regions to demonstrate their skill. He needs to be innovative, creative, and cutting-edge.

Using the Kapisanang Karate ng Guinobatan as the platform, Paje slowly but surely learned the

lessons he needs to learn. He worked on programs based on the people he can count on towards

the end that he had in mind. From a small classroom body of students meeting regularly to study

the same subject, Paje expanded the group to have their own provincial associations, which led

to the Bicol Regional Martial Arts Association, which later became Kapisanang Sikaran ng

Bicol. When the political map of the Philippines was formed, Bicol Region became known as

Region V.

10

In 1965, Romeo Paje tested his knowledge of organizing a seminar by inviting Captain

Meliton Geronimo to put up a Sikaran seminar in the Bicol Region. Paje invited the members of

the Kapisanang Sikaran ng Bicol in this first martial arts seminar. Members from the different

member-provinces attended this 3-day seminar. This seminar was not only successful, it was

very impressive. Supremo Meliton Geronimo was accompanied by Bernard Belleza, newly

crowned Heavyweight Gold Medalist of the Asian Karate Association, Jaime Geronimo (Meliton

Geronimo's younger brother), and Emmanuel Querubin Presidential Assistant for Research and

Standards.

When Captain Meliton Geronimo and his entourage arrived at the Legazpi City train

station, martial arts-uniformed members of the Kapisanang Sikaran of Bicol were lined-up all the

way to the City Hall where they were officially presented with the Key to the City.

The first day of the seminar was very busy but limited to introductions and picture taking.

Captain Geronimo, demonstrated the techniques of Sikaran, while Emmanuel Querubin lectured

the participants in the origin and history of Sikaran. Some have heard of Sikaran, but were not

aware that it was an art that originated in the Philippines.

At that time, Breaking Techniques was an important part of the Karate Brotherhood of

the Philippines. Supremo Meliton Geronimo demonstrated his flying kick techniques and the

different breaking techniques using biyakid, the signature kick of Sikaran. He also demonstrated

the proper technique of breaking concrete blocks, tiles, and stones. For his part, Bernard Belleza,

displayed his skill in using his head for breaking concrete tiles.

This seminar was followed by several other seminars and gatherings. When Romeo Paje

and his associates felt that they were ready, they held an election to name the people who will

lead them in the different aspects of the association.

The Kapisanang Sikaran ng Bicol (KSB) was formally approved and recognized by the

Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines. Jaime Ardales became the first Regional

Director in the Bicol area, followed by Jun de los Angeles for a short span of time, then came

next the term of Rafael Rebua in 1972. With the coordination and effort of Romeo Paje, their

first achievement was the holding of First Bicol Provincial/Regional Karate Tournament on

December 27 & 28, 1969. The said successful event was held at Republic Colleges, Guinobatan ,

Albay. Within the succeeding years, Sikaran Tournaments and exhibitions were regularly held in

different festivities in the region.

BALANGKAS NG KAMPANA

PATTERN OF THE BELL OR 4-DIRECTIONS PATTERN

The Balangkas ng Kampana (Pattern of the Bell), derived its name for the 4-directions of attack,

which like the bell will ring no matter what part you hit. Another reason that is known only to

those who are close to Meliton Geronimo, Kampana (Bell) is the nickname given to him by his

SIKARAN masters to herald his birth. He also has the ability to hit multiple opponents when

surrounded.

When Balangkas ng Kampana were first adopted the only techniques were the five basic kicks,

the PILATIK (front kick), the SIPAKOT (roundhouse kick), the PADYAK PATAGILID (side

thrust kick), the PADYAK PATALIKOD or SIPANG KABAYO (back thrust kick) and the

BIYAKID (spinning heel kick). Incorporated in each balangkas are open hand blocks and other

hand techniques. A kicking block SIPAKAN (crescent kick), is also incorporated. There are 5

Balangkas ng Kampana, which are performed in both right-handed and left, handed- fighter

orientation. For variation, some enterprising instructors incorporated various hand and leg

techniques in different sequences but still called it Balangkas ng Kampana
