April 28, 2011

Almost four years ago, Michael Childers came to the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) with a wonderful offer—to produce One Night Only as a benefit for JFS. Tonight, Michael and JFS have partnered to bring you our fourth sold out production of one of the desert’s most popular events.

One Night Only has brought dozens of the most talented performers from Broadway and Hollywood to delight thousands here in the desert. More importantly, by supporting One Night Only, you are enabling “at risk” school children to receive counseling to succeed in school and homebound seniors to maintain their independence through supportive services. Your support tonight means that individuals and families have access to low cost mental health counseling, teens can receive substance abuse counseling, and seniors don’t have to wait in 100 degree heat for a bus ride to the doctor.

This night would not have been possible without the efforts of some very special people: Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, Harold Matzner, Barbara Fromm, and Sherry Schor. Their vision, determination and leadership have been critical to the event’s remarkable success.

Thank you to all the performers who have so unselfishly volunteered their time and their talents to make this a truly unforgettable event. Last, but certainly not least, to all the individuals who worked or volunteered behind the scenes, we offer our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude.

Warmest regards,

801 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Suite 202Palm Springs, CA 92262 (760) 325-4088 • www.jfsdesert.org

Philanthropist. Arts patron. Cancer survivor. Annette Bloch is all of those.

But family remains her life’s most important work. There now are four generations that include seven great-grandchildren – a clan of 28 and counting.

Born Annette Modell in Philadelphia, Annette moved to Kansas City, Missouri, when she married Richard A. Bloch, co-founder of H&R Block Inc. They raised their daughters in Kansas City.

She has been active in cancer issues since Dick’s lung cancer diagnosis in 1978. Two years later, after his cure, they created the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation and spent the next 24 years working tirelessly on behalf of cancer patients worldwide. When Dick died in 2004 of heart failure, they had been married for 58 years. Since then, Annette has presided over the foundation, whose national hotline (800-433-0464) and website (www.blochcancer.org) provide hope and information on what to do after being diagnosed. The foundation also has helped create 24 cancer survivor parks in the United States and Canada.

A breast cancer diagnosis in 2008 made Annette’s cancer work even more personal. After her gifts to the breast imaging, blood and marrow transplant and radiation oncology programs at the University of Kansas Hospital, where she was treated, the hospital named the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion and the Richard and Annette Bloch Radiation Oncology Pavilion. An earlier gift had established the hospital’s Richard and Annette Bloch Heart Rhythm Center.

Rancho Mirage has been Annette’s second home since 1990, and she spends her winters there. She is on the board of trustees and is a major supporter of the Palm Springs Art Museum. She also is a staunch supporter of Desert AIDS Project, Jewish Family Service of the Desert, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Helene Galen was born Helene Caro, in England, and she moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1958. She met her husband, Lou Galen and they were married in 1975. They had 32 happy years of marriage until he passed away in 2007. Helene had an interesting career in California, working as an Executive at Frederick’s of Hollywood, where she worked both in their advertising department and retail chain. Taking her retail experience with her, she later became vice-president and comptroller for Continental Distributors, a retail jewelry chain.

Helene served on the Board of Trans World Bank in Sherman Oaks, a bank founded by her husband. They bought their Tamarisk home in 1980 from Zeppo Marx, which has been a family residence for the past 30 years. Helene has also been a member of several other Boards of Trustees including Eisenhower Hospital and is currently on their Board of Governors. While serving on the Executive Committee of the board of Tamarisk Country Club, she wrote the unique history of the early days in Palm Springs.

Helene serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Southern California, and serves on the Board of Overseers for the Keck School of Medicine and the USC Hospital. She is a member of the Councilors of the Fine Arts School where she and her husband established the Helene & Louis Galen Ceramic Studio, and the Helene Galen Intermedia Lab. The Galen’s were the major contributors to enable the building of USC’s Galen Center, a Basketball Arena that opened in 2006. She is currently on the Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Art Museum, the McCallum Theater, the International Film Festival and is now taking the helm of the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center Board, as its president. Helene participated in its founding 25 years ago. Helene Galen has two daughters and three grandchildren.

In what seems like another life, Barbara Keller wrote and directed plays at the renowned North Shore Community Arts Center in Great Neck, NY, where she also served as trustee. She taught playwriting and drama at night while spending her days running a labor union for film industry script supervisors in Manhattan. Her first book, Film, tape and tV: Where do I Fit In? was stockpiled by university film professors. Other published writings include Orgasmic days in the south of France, a personal guide to the Cote d’Azur, where Barbara and husband, Jerry, had a home for 18 years.

Barbara began a long term relationship with the Palm Springs Art Museum as a docent and eventually became a Trustee, chair of the Councils Committee, and serves on the Education Committee and the Executive Committee. She is past president of the Museum Associates Council and has acted as chair for key Museum fundraising events. She is also a trustee of the Desert AIDS Project, for which she has co-chaired three Steve Chase Awards galas. Barbara has also served on the Board of Trustees of the McCallum Theatre. Barbara is pleased to be a member of the Board of Trustees of Jewish Family Service of the Desert, which provides social service needs to people of all ages, incomes, and lifestyles. She feels privileged to share honorary co-chair status with Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, and Harold Matzner at Michael Childers’ extraordinary event benefiting Jewish Family Service, One night Only. Barbara is enormously grateful to Barbara Fromm and Sherry Schor, event chairs, for unselfishly donating their time and resources to this evening and to the invaluable, innumerable skills of event director Ken Katz. And Barbara is so appreciative of Michael Childers for his resolve to accept nothing less than excellence and triumph. What a team! What a One Night Only!

Entrepreneur, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Harold Matzner, has made his home in the desert for nearly 30 years. The owner of Palm Spring’s popular Spencer’s Restaurant and CEO of a NY/NJ based branding, advertising and marketing company, Mr. Matzner is credited with revitalizing the Palm Springs International Film Festival and founding the successful business concept of targeted “shared mail”.

He also rescued and revived the world-famous Palm Springs Tennis Club and turned its lunchroom into Spencer’s, one of the City’s hottest see-and-be-seen restaurants. Spencer’s is named after his beloved 110-pound Siberian Husky. Mr. Matzner is Chairman of the Board of the McCallum Theatre and is First Vice Chairman of the Palm Springs Art Museum, and has returned as Chairman of the Film Festival succeeding the late Earl Greenburg.

He has received many awards from the charities that he supports. Most recently he was honored as “Angel of the Year” by Angel View Children’s Foundation and was also Desert Samaritan’s “Samaritan of the Year”. Mr. Matzner has been a benefactor to many other non-profits, both here and on the East coast. Among those local charities benefiting from his philanthropic efforts are the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, Shelter from the Storm, AIDS Assistance Program, Desert Cancer Society, ACT for MS, Eisenhower Medical Center, Desert AIDS Project, Stroke Recovery Center, Temple Isaiah, Mizell Senior Center, Well in the Desert, FIND Food and Pegasus.

Mr. Matzner’s star is located at the foot of his friend Sonny Bono’s statue in the heart of Palm Springs.

A Letter from the Producer

This year's exciting production of One Night Only will be the first time ever in the desert that the great legendary composers, lyricists, and performers of Palm Springs will be celebrated and honored onstage at the beautiful McCallum Theatre. These legends include, Lerner & Loewe, Jerry Herman, Michael Masser, David Zippel, Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, Hoagie Carmichael, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow, Bob Hope, and many more. This idea has been both an inspired dream of mine for a long time. And, fortuitously, an exhilarating brainwave of my brilliant director, Calvin Remsberg, and made musical magic by the artful musical direction of Ron Abel.

I would like to thank my hardworking team of co-chairs: Barbara Keller, Helene Galen, Harold Matzner, Annette Bloch, Sherry Schor, and Barbara Fromm.

To my friends at Jewish Family Service-- I love and cherish your constant support of One Night Only.

A special thanks to our special volunteers for all their hard work and to my wonderful assistants Trish Stuckey & Jeff Taylor. My eternal gratitude to Ken Katz, Kimberly Nichols, and Elaine Goodman for helping to produce this wonderful show for the past ten years.

Yours,
