BEFORE
CHOOSING
A COLLEGE
Choosing a college is no easy task. Consideringits a decision that will lay the groundwork foryour career and that college is one of the biggestfinancial investments youll ever make, moststudents and parents are aware that its not adecision to be taken lightly.
While its important to ask a lot of questionsabout the schools youre considering, some of the
most important questions you need to ask beforechoosing a school should be directed at yourself.Figuring out your own learning style and picking aschool that plays to those strengths is one of thebiggest keys to your educational success.
Students should consider these four questionsbefore choosing a school:
1. Do you do well in a lecture setting or areyou more of a hands-on learner?
Once you answer this question, determine whichstyle of learning is used most at the colleges you
are considering. For example, a large liberal artsuniversity might feature a class schedule heavy inlectures, where a career-focused tech school mightfocus mainly on hands-on learning in a classroomsetting.

2. Do you favor abstract thinking or do youlike to solve problems in a more direct and lesstheoretical manner?
If you enjoy creative writing and topics likespolitical science, religion or history where theretends to be more than one way to answer aquestion and analysis is a little more subjective, youre more of an abstract learner. If you enjoy mathor computer programming, where there are rightand wrong ways to solve a problem, you prefer amore empirical and pragmatic method of learning.Determining what works best for you will help youboth pick a college and area of study.
3. Would you consider yourself a non-traditional learner?
If youve found success in classes such asprojects-based classes as opposed to traditionallecture-based classes, you may do well to find acollege that offers classes that cater to studentswith non-traditional needs. If youve already trieda traditional college and didnt like it or werent
successful, you may have just needed a curriculum
that better fits your learning style and schools that
cater to non-traditional students can help.
4. Do you already know what type of careeryou would like to pursue?
If you do, you may want to consider a career-
focused college that will give you the specifictraining to succeed in your chosen career. If youre
undecided or have multiple interests, a liberal arts
education might be more appropriate. For example
if you know you want to be a computer programmer
and have no interest in a managerial role, you
might consider a school that focuses specifically
on building your technical skills to help you in that
specific role.
By thinking a little bit about what makes you
succeed as a student, you can best determine both
where your interests lie and what kind of educationis best for you. By determining this before you
enroll in a school, youll help increase the odds that
your educational dollar is put to good use.

Meeting the needs of todays
WORK FORCE
Sending a student to college is a proud time forfamilies. But with tuition costs rising and familiescontinuing to face financial challenges, many aretaking another look at how to pay for college.
According to the latest Merrill Edge Report, 56percent of parents have paid or expect to paymore to send their first child to college than theyhad originally anticipated when the child was born. When asked why they are paying more, one inthree parents who currently have a child in collegeor have one that has graduated said it was to keeptheir child out of debt.
Paying for college is a big priority for our clientsand with costs continuing to rise, were tellingthem its never too early or too late to readjust
their financial plan for the true price of college, says Dean Athanasia, preferred and small businessexecutive at Bank of America. Though itsdaunting, there are many steps you can take toprepare to send your child to school.
Estimate the costs
First estimate how much college will cost and whatyou can afford. To do this, you can take advantageof a number of online tools.
Once you calculate how much youre able to spend, sit down as a family and go over your finances.Establish how much youre able to afford and howyoull pay for any additional costs that arise forexample, through your child taking on part-time
jobs or student loans. Your child may have his sightsset on a more expensive school, but after analyzingyour finances you may decide a more affordableuniversity closer to home is the way to go.
Invest early
The sooner you can start saving for college, thebetter. Among parents who saved for college, 68percent began doing so before their child reachedthe age of 6. And of those parents who saved, 38percent wish they began earlier.
