President Mark’s Message

PRESIDENT‟S MESSAGE, APRIL, 2016

Lincoln Highway talk. Thanks to all who attended SVBCC Club Historian Bob Vitrikas‟s Lincoln Highway presentation on March 19th. Attendance was excellent, and Bob provided a very nicely done video account of his trip, along with his personal notes of the long, beautiful passage across the heartland of the na-tion. I personally cannot recall a more revealing and enjoyable account of such a journey. Many thanks to Bob for the work he did on this presentation.

Ice Chipper Rally April 2nd. For the SVBCC, April brings another great tradition, our annual Ice Chipper Rally is being held on Saturday, April 2nd. All cars will meet in the parking lot at the rear of the Pi-lot Gasoline Station located in Greenville, VA at the intersections of US-11, I-81 (exit #213), and US-340 for a departure time of 10AM. We are going to a place the Ice Chipper Rally has not gone before and plan to ar-rive between 12Noon and 1PM. If the weather and/or roads are wet, feel free to drive a modern car as this is a rain or shine event. You can contact Ken at home (540)-885-1757, [email protected]; or work (540) 332-8121, [email protected]

Adopt-A-Highway April 22. And, on April 23rd, our Adopt-A-Highway, or as it‟s known to Club members, The Spring Trash Bash, will occur. Bob Shiflet has sponsored this event for many years, and it‟s a great time for fellowship, and for our Club to give back to the motoring community. Please try to make it this year, and watch our website and Facebook page for details.

Seneca Rock Drive, Picnic and Hike, May 14, 2016, 10AM, McDowell. May in Highland! Winding roads, mountain laurel and rhododendron in bloom and fried chicken! What could be better? Well.....lots of SVBCC members enjoying the experience together that's what.

Come join us for a great drive to Seneca Rock State Park in nearby West Virginia where we'll picnic and, for those wanting to add even more to the experience, hike the trail on Seneca Rock to the top for an in-credible view, plus it will help you work off all those calories you just consumed!

The club will provide tasty fried chicken and everyone is asked to bring your beverage and a suitable side dish or dessert for all to share. We'll meet at the Presbyterian church in McDowell (the brick church on the left just after crossing the Bull Pasture River bridge) at 10:00 AM and caravan to Seneca Rock on some wonderful mountain roads that offer some spectacular views.

Those not wishing to hang around for the hike may simply pick a returning route and enjoy the rest of the day driving.

If this all sounds like an event you'd like to be involved with, please email Wes at <[email protected]> by May 10th so he can plan accordingly. Thanks and we hope to see you all there.

Until next month, here‟s wishing you all happy motoring. Cheers, all the best!

Mark K. Brown, President, SVBCC

The TVR Griffith One Man‟s Dream Come True

by Bob Vitrikas In 1962 Carroll Shelby began importing AC rolling chassis (a car minus the engine and

transmission) as the basis for his British-American hybrid Cobra and it was an overnight sen-sation. One of the early Cobra owners was a Ford dealer named Andrew „Jack‟ Griffith who supplied a 1962 Viking Blue Cobra race car for American racing legend Mark Donohue and a 1962 TVR Grantura for Gerry Sagerman . Donohue also campaigned a factory sponsored TVR Grantura co-driven by Jay Signore at the 1962 Sebring 12 Hour endurance race. Their success on the track inspired Griffith and mechanical engineer Donohue to begin thinking of building a faster Cobra using the lighter TVR Grantura. Donohue‟s Cobra and the factory TVR racers were both maintained at Griffith‟s dealership. As the story goes, just for the fun of it mechanics at Griffith‟s shop dropped the Cobra engine from Donohue‟s car into Sageman‟s Grantura to see if it would fit. It did, just barely with some bashing of chassis tubes to provide clearance. The result was a car of astonishing performance, significantly faster than the Co-bra. The die was cast. Perennially in financial trouble, TVR jumped at the prospect of selling a new model to generate interest and much need cash for the marque.

With TVRs blessing, Griffith secured the rights to build the Griffith 200 in the U.S. and es-

tablished the Griffith Motor Company in Plainview, NY (Long Island). Griffith arranged for TVR to build a series of Granturas with a modified chassis to accommodate the Ford V8 which Grif-fith would install in the U.S.

The brakes were not modified (bad idea IMO) but slightly wider tires (185 cross section) were fitted. Two additional coil spring/shock absorbers were added to help control the rear ax-le, and suspension pick-up points were strengthened. Surprisingly the MGB derived rear dif-ferential, drive shafts and axle were retained and held up remarkably well. I recall that the MG record breaker EX-181 used a TC gearbox to transmit 300 hp to the rear axle and it held up under the nearly 6 fold increase in power. You could order your Griffith with either a 195 hp or 271 hp Ford 289 V8. the Griffith 200 sold for $3,995 and dry weight was just 1,824 lbs, about 400 lbs less than a Cobra with the same Ford horsepower under the bonnet, it was indeed a Cobra killer and embarrassed many a Jaguar E-Type and V12 Ferrari! With the 271 hp en-gine performance of the 1,905 lb Griffith was stunning; 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and 150 mph top speed! Only 192 Griffith 200s were made, followed in the spring of 1964 by the “Manx Tail” 400 which which featured much improved cooling over the 200 series.

The Griffith 400 was introduced at the April 1964 New York Auto Show as was the Ford V8 engined Sunbeam Tiger. Quite a coincidence of timing eh? The 400 was a best seller for TVR with production rising to as many as 15 engineless Griffiths built every week. This happy collaboration was brought to a halt by the crippling U.S. dock worker strike in 1965 which also brought down TVR‟s UK based Grantura Engineering. When Griffith assembly stopped at the Syosset, New York plant something less than 300 Griffiths were produced. Nearly all were sold in the U.S. However TVR went through yet another ownership change and the newly formed TVR Engineering turned out at least 10 but no more than 20 Griffiths between April 1966 and January 1967.

The Griffith name was resurrected at the 1990 Birmingham Motor Show and the curva-ceous Griffith was a sensation! Engine power started at 240 hp but by 1993 the Griffith 500 produced 340 hp, a whopping 100 hp increase! Zero to 60 for the 340 hp engine took just 4.1 seconds and top speed was quoted as 167 mph. Remarkably, weight was held to just 2,300 lbs, about the same as an MGB. A total of 2,582 TVR Griffiths were sold from 1992-2002. If you would like to learn more about this amazing British-American hybrid, check out this web site dedicated to the history of the Griffith 200, 400 and 600. http://www.griffithmotorcars.com/Home_Page.php Even better, get your very own copy of the new book “The Griffith Years” by Mike Mooney. Mike was one of the three test drivers for the Grif-fith along with American racing legend Mark Donohue and Len Bailey. I‟ve got mine on order!

Driving the Lincoln Highway After retuning from last summer‟s transcontinental tour, Bob & Chris Vikrikas declared the trip to be the most interesting and most enjoyable driving event they had ever experienced. On Saturday, March 19, Bob shared that enthusiasm with about 25 Club members over lunch at the Timberwoods Grill. The 2015 Henry B. Joy Tour was a 12 day, 2836 mile event sponsored by two Packard clubs and by the Lincoln Highway Association. It celebrated the 100th anniversary of a trip made by Packard Motor Car Company‟s employees and its president, Henry B. Joy. Joy wanted to drive two cars from the factory along the newly completed Lincoln Highway for display at the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition. They spent 23 days covering the distance; their success promoted efforts to develop a modern highway system. The 2015 Tour attracted about 100 people and 50 cars. It began at the Packard Motor Car Com-pany‟s Proving Grounds north of Detroit and welcomed all cars—not just Packards. One notable car was a stock (?) Model A Ford from the West Coast that had driven to New England before joining the Tour. Club members John and Susan Carpenter accompanied Bob and Chris--departing from Char-lottesville and visiting several museums before the start. Participants were given comprehensive directions but were encouraged to drive at their own pace and do their own exploring. Daily (suggested) mileage ranged between 180 and 360 miles; multi-ple stops were built in for historic talks, photography shoots, daily meals, nightly accommodations, and other activities. Tour participants were greeted by local automobile enthusiasts and by Lincoln Highway Association volunteers everywhere they went. At the conclusion, the Carpenters returned their (rental) car and flew home. Bob and Chris did some sightseeing and visited family members before turning east, driving home, and ending the most remarkable road trip of a lifetime. Some participant‟s cars can be found at: http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2015/cars/ The Tour‟s itinerary can be fond at:http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2015/itinerary/ For those interested in a somewhat shorter version of this drive, the Lincoln Highway Association is sponsor-ing a summer 2016 tour: It begins in Cumberland, MD on June 17 and ends in Joliet, IL on June 24. Would you like company? Bob and Chris have already signed up and can provide all the necessary information. If you want to join in on the fun, you need to regis-ter no later than 1 May 2016!! SPRING TRASH BASH By Bob Shiflet

It is amazing to me how much litter is along our Virginia roadways. Last fall, I was in the New Eng-land states and their roads were nearly litter free. I hate to say it, but Virginians are a bunch of slobs. To show that SVBCC members are an exception, we have adopted two sections of roadway in the Barren Ridge area. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast at the Waynesboro Golden Corral on Saturday, April 23rd. After stuffing ourselves with more food that we should, we will caravan out to our adopted roadways to see what litter was left behind since last fall. To get to the Golden Corral, take exit 94 off I-64. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and go to the first traffic light if you came from the East and the second light if you came from the West. Turn left at the light onto Lew DeWitt Blvd. and also turn left at the next traffic light. Go one block and turn right where you will see the Golden Corral on your left. Just bring you walking shoes and gloves. We will provide everything else, including picking up your bill for breakfast. Please let me know if you plan to help with this civic project. Email me at [email protected] or call at 540-943-1236.

Waynesboro Motorsports Show May 14, 2016 9 AM to 2 PM

As a member of the organizing committee for the show, I invite you to participate in this years Waynesboro Motorsport Show! Please be aware that there is another very worthy SVBCC event going on May 14; Wes Maupin‟s Seneca Rock drive and picnic. This year‟s event is a little different. When we talked about increasing participants, I noted that I felt interest in the event was low among my club‟s members do to the impression that if you weren‟t bringing American muscle to the show, you didn‟t have a chance of winning anything. So, as a result, we have now created an „European‟ classification that will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd trophy. So there is a chance for our LBC to walk away with 3 awards!! There will also be a People‟s Choice award (voted on by the participants) and a Best in Show, but I would expect those to stay around the Vets, Mustangs and Hemi‟s. Registration in ad-vance is $12, $15 day of, and can be found on the following website http://www.waynesboromotorsports.com/ Let me know if you need additional info!! Todd Patrick.

Euro Auto Festival Dave Sanders

I know it isn't quite April, but...Dave Sanders is sponsoring a trip to the Euro Auto Fest in Greenville, SC in October. In order to plan accordingly, I thought you all might like to have information on this event. It is my understanding that at some point in the future, the Embassy Suite will be offering a block of rooms at a special Euro Fest price. Dave will let us know when that rate becomes available. The Euro Auto Festival in Greenville, SC is the largest European/British car show in the Southeast. In 2016 the featured marques are British Roadsters. There are typically over 400 cars and 15,000 paying specta-tors. The Euro was held at the BMW factory near Greenville through 2104 but moved to The Preserve at Verdae, a golf course adjacent to the Embassy Suites Golf Resort & Conference Center, in 2015 due to the show's growth and BMW's doubling the size of their factory. For 2016 the Euro will be held on 21 and 22 October. The show is held on Saturday. On Friday there are several driving tours offered as well as seminars on tires, collector car insurance, detailing, etc. Seminars are free; there's a nominal charge for the tours to cover the cost of lunch. There's also a reception Friday night (fee) and a dinner Saturday night (fee). Advance reservations are required for all the events. The Embassy Suites holds a block of rooms for a very reasonable price but they go fast so it's impera-tive that those who want to attend reserve them well in advance. Included in the rate is the nightly Manager's Reception (drinks and snacks) and a breakfast buffet. The plan is to drive to Greenville on Oct 20 (Thursday). Greenville is about 400 miles away and takes about six hours if one sticks to the interstates. Alternative routes are more fun but take longer. Figure an en-tire day to get there. Once in Greenville there are several choices to make on what to do for Friday. There are the afore-mentioned tours, a visit to the BMW factory and museum, the BMW Performance Center, or a visit to Green-ville's excellent downtown. The show is Saturday and only about 100 yards away from the hotel (reserved parking for entrants.) Sunday (or Saturday night if you wish) is for the drive home. The Simple Stuff— Talking Horse Sense

by Bob Vitrikas

If you are like me, you‟ve been confused by veteran British car horsepower ratings. What the heck is a Rolls-Royce 10/20 anyway? Like many things in life, taxes are the root of the prob-lem. Way back in 1910 the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), at the request of the British govern-ment, came up with a formula to rate engine horsepower for the purpose of computing taxes on the vehicles of the day. This figure was called “taxable horsepower” and was calculated by the follow-ing formula which was also used to calculate horsepower for early 20th century American cars:

RAC h.p. = 2/5 D2 n where D is the diameter (or bore) of the cylinder in inches n is the number of cylinders This formula worked OK in the early days of gasoline internal combustion engine design but as technology advanced the gap between taxable horsepower and actual horsepower grew re-sulting in the two horsepower description, e.g. Wolseley 14/60 or Alvis 12/70. The first number was the taxable horsepower and the second the actual horsepower. The taxable horsepower formula based on engine bore size encouraged designers to favor small bore long stroke engines. The ef-fect was high torque due to the long stroke but high piston speeds resulted in lower RPM red lines which in turn reduced top horsepower ratings which are dependent on engine RPM.

-In addition to lower horsepower and rev limits, there were other negative effects: -Small bore size favored side valve engines which were much less effi-cient than more modern overhead valve designs. -A multiplicity of engine designs to fit into various tax classes resulted in less efficient engine manufacturing and more model designations such as Sevens, Eights, Nines etc. named for the various tax classes. You may recall the Austin Seven and Riley Nine models. -These tax laws put British car manufacturers at a disadvantage in the global marketplace as more efficient large bore overhead valve engine de-signs became the norm.

In the post WWII era British automobile design had to be competitive with other manufactur-ers, especially in the American market where big bore engines propelling large roomy cars were in high demand. The RAC taxable horsepower formula went out the window in 1947 and in its place was a vehicle tax based simply on engine displacement. The change in the tax law came quickly but it took decades for some British engine manufacturing to re-tool and take full advantage of the new freedom of design.
