Steven MenellyValedictorian

President Trapasso and Board of Educati on members, Superintendent Feirsen, Principal McLaughlin, Garden City High School faculty, parents, friends and family, welcome, and from the bott om of our hearts, thank you. Thank you for the unending support and the unconditi onal love that you have given to the Class of 2014. We are here today in celebrati on, a celebrati on for things past and future. Today is the fi nal day for the Class of 2014. Tomorrow our class will be only a remembrance in the halls of Garden City High School, the latest link in a chain that extends far back to the past and will stretch far into the future. What is this Class of 2014 here today, then? What is this fl eeti ng moment between yesterday and tomorrow that seems to be passing so quickly? You could say that this is all a coincidence - that the Class of 2014 is just 277 people born in approximately the same year that happened to live in the same town, that this was all random, that we were thrown together by ti me and chance. This origin is, in some sense, true, but it is insuffi cient. We have become something greater through the years

we have spent as kin in the schools of this district. As wonderful as we are as individuals, the Class of 2014 is greater than the sum of its parts. It lives beyond us, thinking and acti ng in accordance with the values embodied by our place and ti me. It has taken its own steps and breathed its own air. It is the individual of our community. Imagine if this class were to take the form of another student sitti ng amongst us today. Who is this person? No doubt this person would be brilliant, waltzing with ease through every subject, showing themself to be a true renaissance man or woman through their voracious passion for learning. The thorniest calculus problems would resolve themselves before the eyes of this student. He would write eff usively on any topic from history or literature, just as easily as she would speak in any of the languages taught here. Doubtless, too, would be their athleti c prowess, as this person would have the strength of a linebacker, the grace of gymnast, the endurance of a marathon runner, and on and on. In short, he or she would put any decathlon athlete to shame. In the arts, this student of ours would be unprecedented, singing and dancing and acti ng with remarkable skill, all while perfectly playing any number of instruments. And if this weren’t enough, our student would construe hues and colors beauti fully, forging breathtaking arrangements with every medium. We should take great pride in this student, as it is the best of all of us that makes him or her great.Parents, you have seen this child grow, from its nascent steps in kindergarten to its fi nal steps down to its seat here today.Administrators, you have shepherded this student with love through the years, guiding it along the way.And teachers, you have imparted all that you can on this child, hoping in the wisdom of your infl uence. The community embodied by the Garden City School system raised this child, now an adult and suitably ready for the world. Finally, if this child takes the best of our accomplishment, it also must take the best of our character. It treats the world and humanity with unqualifi ed generosity, kindness, and opti mism. It comports itself with dignity and responsibility no matt er the circumstance. Unfortunately, the story of this child ends here on this day, as there are no more school days left for its development. We students, who each have contributed in our own special way to this person, are about to leave on our own, new journeys. In the next chapter of our lives, we will, in some way, be part of a community, whether that means a university, or a business, or a place of residence; we will conti nue to live our lives through communiti es, and in the process, give that community a life of its own, just as we have breathed life into the student we now leave behind.American historian Henry Adams said this in the memoir of his own life: “All experience is an arch, to build upon.”Garden City High School Class of 2014, great things lie ahead. By our experience here, we have been given a template for life. For both tough and easy ti mes, recall what we have brought forth into the world, that exemplar student whom we bid goodbye to today, and act in accordance with the bett er nature of ourselves embodied in that individual. But for this moment now - I congratulate and wish the absolute best to the members of this class and to their families, for this journey is almost over and ti me, at least momentarily, is on our side.
