Representative Maloney Introduces Life-saving Librarians Act Tuesday, October 31, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney, at the Middletown Thrall Library, announced a new bill, Life- saving Librar- ians Act, that would provide federal grants for libraries to purchase Narcan and train their staff how to administer the life-saving anti- dote. With more addicts using public locations, like libraries, to use opioid and heroin, librarians are finding they need to be apt in dealing with overdoses. “Library staff across the country are ready to save lives when people overdose – now it’s up to us to make sure they have the training and tools they need to provide immediate assistance to people who are struggling with addiction,” said Representative Maloney. “New York State’s programs that provide this training are proven lifesavers – and it’s time we build on that success and take these programs nationwide.” Middletown Thrall Library’s Executive Director Matt Pfisterer stated that two people have overdosed in the library during the past month. Both cases were rescued by the police. The library does have staff that were trained by Restorative Management, a nonprofit organization that provides substance-abuse services at three Orange County locations. “Libraries, library workers and library boards have a long history of overcoming obstacles so that we can continue to provide essential services which our communities need now more than ever,” stated Matt Pfisterer. THANK YOU!

Florida Public Library Receives Grant

to Develop Youth Coding Programs

Florida Public Library (FPL) is pleased to announce that they have received a $2,100 grant from the American Library Association (ALA) to design and implement coding programs for young people. FPL is one of 28 libraries in 21 states, out of over four hundred applicants, chosen to receive a grant funded by Libraries Ready to Code, an initiative of ALA sponsored by Google to promote computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) among youth.

Florida’s program will involve games, learning computer logic and language, building original games with LittleBits Kits, coding these creations and devel-oping the curriculum to be followed for the second session. It will offer structured and high-interest learning for students and give them the skills to pursue coding on their own. Registration is required for this program through the event calendar on www.floridapubliclibrary.org or by calling the library at 845.651.7659.

Book Consortium

News

Eileen Acosta, RCLS Communications Assistant

Thanks to the RCLS Continuing Education program, two new titles will be added to the Book Consortium every season (four times a year) to assist member library staff with their book discussion needs.

The goal is to add bestseller paperbacks or older titles that have enjoyed renewed interest due to movies and/or TV series. Twenty copies of each title will be added to the Consortium.

This Fall’s additions are: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret

Atwood Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly When the books are added, online

LibGuides will be simultaneously published for each title. The LibGuide will include discussion questions, author biography, author interviews, lists of read-a-likes, lists of other books by the author and more.

To find the Book Discussion LibGuides, visit the RCLS website.

For those unaware of the RCLS Book Consortium, what it is, how to request books, and the titles that are available, visit the RCLS website.

We hope that you will take advantage of the RCLS Book Consortium as we work to improve and update the collection.

Photo of the Week

LARC (Library Association of Rockland County) was well represented in the Nyack Halloween Parade.

A total of eight individuals paraded with the LARC float, which celebrated the works of picture book

creator Eric Carle. Pictured here are Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (Jessica Bowen,

Piermont Library District), The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Elyse Stoller, Haverstraw King's Daughters

Public Library) and Walter the Baker (Randall Enos, RCLS). Staff from Valley Cottage Free Library and

Finkelstein Memorial Library (Spring Valley) also marched and Sara Nugent from Tappan Library

helped transform Jessica’s red convertible into the Grouchy Ladybug.

For more parade photos, visit Google Photos or enjoy the whole parade on YouTube!

Share a library related photo, include a brief caption, your name, position and the library’s name. A photo

release is required from recognizable individuals in the photo. Click here for the RCLS photo release. Submit

2017 RCLS Annual Meeting Awards

At the RCLS Legislative Breakfast and Annual Meeting held on Friday, September 15, Annual Awards presentations were made. The following are the remarks from the winner of the Member Library Youth Program of the Year Award:

Program: “A Run Between the Pages”

Nominator: Matt Gomm, Director

Nominating Library: Goshen Public Library and Historical Society

On behalf of the Just for Kids staff of the Goshen Public

Library, thank you so much for recognizing us with this award. We are so proud to be able to win for a program that encompassed a ton of hard work that touched so many children and caregivers. It is also such a good omen to win for the very first program that was held on the property of our new building currently under construction! Hopefully this will be the first of many rewarding experiences for our young patrons in Goshen!

This program was a kickoff to our Summer Reading Program in 2016, which you all know was themed, "On Your Mark Get Set READ." We felt that A Run Between the Pages was the best way to convey the idea we had of putting together physical and mental fitness as complementary attributes. Part one of the day was to run a physical fitness course with nine different stations sponsored by different book characters. There was Skippyjon Jones' Skip-it Station, the Harry Potter Snitch Juggling Station, the Fancy Nancy Hula Hoop Station and many more! Each station had large cardboard cutout decorations to give the kids the feel that they were inside a book. At each station the kids were challenged to complete as many repetitions of the activity as they could and earn a certain number of tickets to be collected as they finished the course.

These tickets were then used in Rewards Row, a series of craft and prize stations, which included a popcorn station, a patriotic craft station, a surprise ball creation station and the most popular, The Color Corral! To create the Color Corral, we engineered a plastic sheeting designated area for kids to come into; and every fifteen minutes our staff and volunteers had as much fun as the kids creating a color storm with giant color cannons and color shooters made out of toilet paper tubes and balloons. Kids were given eye protection and reveled in being a walking, talking Tie-dyed piece of art!

So as you can see, the fun of this wonderful program that encompassed over 200 participants, staff and volunteers was certainly rewarding enough. However, we are very happy to be recognized and hope to continue to make the joy of reading larger than life for all of our community. Thank you again!

Michelle Muller, Head of Youth Services

Choosing the Right Games for

Your Library

Games in Libraries, Sept. 5 James Baker writes: “So your library has decided to acquire

some games for patrons to use. That’s great, right up until you find yourself in your local games store, completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of games on offer. Sure you’ve grabbed a copy of Settlers of Catan because you’ve heard that ‘everyone should have a copy,’ Carcassonne because ‘it’s just not a collection unless you have it too,’ and Ticket to Ride because trains. But how do you keep selecting games that are right for your library?” Click on the link above to find out.

How to Rescue a Water-

Damaged Book

The Digital Reader, Oct. 20 Nate Hoffelder writes: “We all know how to use the rice

trick to recover a waterlogged gadget (hint: oatmeal works better), but have you ever had to revive a book from a watery demise? The Syracuse University Libraries released this visual primer (2:39) in which they share a few of the tricks they use to repair library books that have been returned in less than pristine condition—including blotting with paper towels or air-drying to using a freezer or a dehumidifier.”

How to Spot Fake Stock Photos

How-To Geek, Oct. 20 Michael Crider writes: “Spammers and other unscrupulous

advertisers are always looking for new ways to get you to click on their pages. One of the latest tactics is to steal popular and useful stock images—like the kind you sometimes see in news articles—and re-upload them elsewhere. If part of your job is finding and using images, and more importantly, making sure it’s legal to use them and to properly attribute them, this can be a serious problem. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself.” Click on the link above to find out.
