Suggestion #3 – Know your style. Is your “must stay” fur-niture bold or safe, simple or complex, large or small, thick or dainty? When you walk into that warm fuzzy room is there a contemporary shiny glass cof-fee table with an old fashioned brown striped tweed coach, probably not. Know what your style is so that when you’re out shopping around to find pieces to add to your collection you add something that adds to the fuzz not a sticker burr that will add to the fuzz but irritate you until you remove it.Suggestion #4 – Go through your notebook. Pick a color that will accentuate your “must keep items” and that works well with your home. Make sure you will be able to take that color and move it through the entire house, or those rooms that will be within the style. It doesn’t have to be a themed room, i.e. beach or cabin. It can be a color theme. Go to the paint store or the hardware store and find the one color you like the most. Often times the color will be on a palette that has other

colors that will work well with it. Stick to the suggestions. The reason they have them together is because they work. You don’t have to use them all, nor do they have to be on the wall. You can use the other colors in pil-lows, rugs, pictures, mats. Take several strips, tape one in your book and put the other in your pocket. It’s O.K. to have from 3-5 colors you chose to work with. Every time you are ready to buy something, pull out the strip to see if the color is within the range of colors to match your color theme. Suggestion #5 – Start small and cheap. A gallon of paint will go a long way to changing your look for very little money. The gallon of paint can go on one wall and a repurposed end table; one bathroom wall or a shelf. Search garage sales, clearance purchases, dumpster diving. Don’t forget just be-cause it’s cheap doesn’t mean you want it, it has to fit the style you’ve chosen to embrace and you are trying to create. Suggestion #6 – Work your room. Once you have your

room style set and you are happy with what you have cre-ated don’t over clutter. If you see something and you want to buy it go through the list 1. Do I need it or just want it? 2. Will it fit within my color scheme? 3. Is it going to add clutter or will it have a purpose? 4. Did the room I am styling my room after have a lot of clutter? 5. If you have kids, will it be some-thing they will be able to use or will they hate it because it is that off limits item? 6. If I’m go-ing to add something new am I willing to get rid of something? Don’t just buy because you can and you like it.Suggestions #7 – Don’t buy things because they are the new craze. Not a coffee drinker, then don’t buy that red coffee pot because it will look nice dis-played on the counter, or it’s on clearance. You can buy it if you want it, just make sure it’s pur-pose will make your life easier.

As we head into the middle of summer 2012, we at ON! Magazine are won-dering if you have noticed any exciting new fashion statements lately? Our sizzling section of South Texas may be far away om the runway shows in New York and L.A., but we have denitely noticed Fashionistas here who are showcasing the latest trends. e hoest summer statement thus far seems to be NEON NEON NEON! Celebrities om coast to coast, and everywhere in between, are wearing pops of neon colors throughout

their wardrobes. Show o your favorite electric colors in a dress, a pair of shoes, a handbag, a neck-lace, or even your nails. e im-

portant thing to remember is not to wear too many neon pieces at the same time. Pair your neon statement with black, camel, or grey tones, and have fun! Yet another bold fashion statement this summer is color blocking. e technical denition of color blocking is taking bold opposite colors on the color wheel and pairing them for the widest contrast possible. How-ever, a looser interpretation of the trend simply allows for loud and geometric solid colors placed together for maximum impact. If you aren’t brave enough to sport this trend in your clothing, start slowly by choosing shoes or handbags that showcase the color blocking technique. e trend we especially love for our South Texas summers is the Maxi Dress. An essential piece for every Fashionista’s wardrobe, the Maxi Dress is a long owing dress usually ed on the top and falling to the ankles. is comfortable but chic piece is easily paired with ats or chunky pieces of jewelry. For a more dramatic look, your Maxi Dress can reveal a plunging neckline or perhaps a thigh high slit. Sexy! No maer which of the latest styles inspire you this sum-

mer, wear them all with condence! Rock your favorite pair of sunglasses with

any of these trends and hold your head up high. Condence

is the best fashion statement of all,

wouldn’t you say? Enjoy your South Texas

summer days Fashionistas!

Burger King tells us that we can “have it our way.” Subway lets us create our own sandwich master-pieces. Walt Disney World trains their employees in the idea that we are guests when we visit, not merely customers. These busi-ness plans centered on the satis-faction of us as consumers have served these businesses well over the years. It’s a common sense approach to business. However what’s the old saying… That common sense is not that common? Back in January, there was a large amount of fanfare over a new pricing strategy being launched by retail giant JCPenney. They said they had a revolutionary idea to get rid of “sales,” “coupons” and “gim-micks” and just lower their everyday prices by around 40%. They said it was “fair and square.” Apparently, the shoppers of the world didn’t get the message and now JCPenney is bringing back the “S word.” In just the rst quar-ter of this year, the retailer post-ed a loss of $163 million as sales tanked 20 percent. JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson assured the pub-lic and investors that their sales

slump could be xed by “educat-ing” JCPenney customers better: “We did not realize how deep some of the customers were into coupons,” said JCPenney COO Michael Kramer.” With CEO Johnson stating that “Coupons were a drug” that “really drove trac.” As an avid coupon user, of course I found those comments oensive, but to me the biggest oence, was a retailer that didn’t KNOW their customers! Common sense! Didn’t they do their ba-

sic research and track consumer behavior? How could they not know that sales and coupons were a power-ful buying tool for their core customers? Of course, there was a scapegoat. Company Presi-

dent and head of marketing Mi-chael Francis got the boot in June, and clearances, sales and possibly coupons seem to be on their way back in.

What does this mean to us though? It means that we, as con-sumers, have power! Each dollar

you spend at a store is a “vote” for that store! Love the Wal-mart coupon policy? Shop there! “Vote” for them! Have a favorite locally owned boutique that you’d miss desperate-ly if they were gone?

Go buy something there – show them you love them

with your shopping dollars. Do you think HEB has the best pro-duce in town? Great! Buy it there! The power is in your hands. Ob-viously, Hundreds of thousands of consumers voted a big “NO” to JCPenney’s pricing strategy this year. I personally haven’t been inside our local JCPenney since early this year when my shopping showed me the prices weren’t all that “fair and square.” By choosing to spend our retail money else-where, JCPenney has gotten the memo. We “voted” and now they are listening! Remember that you choose where you shop, where you spend and that as Disney shows us, retailers really are ght-ing to have us “be their guests!”

Happy Saving!Julie
