Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Dear Friends,

Olympic fever will be gripping us this month if it hasn’t already done so! Forthe first time since 1948, Britain is hosting the Olympic Games and lots ofpeople, with their sought-after tickets, can’t wait to watch their particularsport.

Some of the wedding couples this year have had to hear me talking aboutsport and marathons. Marriage can be viewed a bit like a marathon – unlikethe sprint, it lasts a lot longer – or is expected to last a lot longer.Perseverance is required along with lots of love, patience, kindness and allthose fruits of the Spirit along with a cost and sacrifice.

The people of St Paul’s day were familiar with sports and races and St Pauloften talked about the Christian life being like a run: we are to fix our eyeson Jesus and strive for the goal of attaining life after death. Sometimes theChristian life is thought of as a journey. Thinking in terms of sport, it’s a racewhere we don’t allow ourselves to be distracted from what’s going on onthe other running track, but travelling with eyes looking straight ahead. Andthere are distractions galore to stop us from growing into a deeperrelationship with Jesus/God. How many times do you find that prayer timeor Bible study time have been squeezed because something, supposedlybetter, was calling on your time? How many times do we not do that kindthing that we should have done? Jesus calls us forward so we can growmore like him.

The goal for St Paul was life after death – the heavenly banquet. TheOlympic Games will bring to Britain people of many races and creeds. It isan opportunity to see all humanity drawn together competing and enjoyingsporting events all together. That’s what heaven will be like – full of all sortsof people – some like us and some very unlike us – but all are children ofGod.

So enjoy the Olympics – whether at some of the actual events or bywatching TV - and persevere on your race in the journey of discipleship! With love and prayers,

Jane’s Homily for theJubilee Service on

3rd June 2012May I speak in the name of the Father andof the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.Today we are thanking God for ourpresent Queen. We’re thanking God forher 60 years’ reign and for her wiseleadership. When Queen Elizabeth came to thethrone, she was in her mid- twenties –younger than many of us here. Since thenshe has served this country and theCommonwealth with immense dedication. It’s interesting to recall the words she usedin a radio broadcast from Cape Town,South Africa, on her 21st birthday.Princess Elizabeth, as she was knownthen, said in a solemn act of dedication:

I declare before you all that mywhole life whether it be long orshort shall be devoted to yourservice and the service of ourgreat imperial family to which weall belong. But I shall not have strength tocarry out this resolution aloneunless you join in it with me, as Inow invite you to do: I know thatyour support will be unfailinglygiven. God help me to make goodmy vow, and God bless all of youwho are willing to share in it.

There’s one thing to say this at the age of21 and another thing to live it out for therest of one’s life. This is something ourQueen has done in a quite remarkableway. Less than 5 years after she hadmade that speech, her father had died andshe had been proclaimed Queen. Theservice which she promised to give hadwell and truly begun…and she has

continued to execute that service faithfullyfor the last 60 years. In today’s reading from St Luke’s gospel,Jesus finds his disciples arguing aboutwhich of them was the greatest.Sometimes those disciples must havedriven Jesus mad because they just didn’t“get” what discipleship was about. Jesusreminded them that life is not about whois the greatest. Rather, life is about servingone another…and he modelled his life onserving others. Our human brains need tobe reminded constantly of this truth – andwe need God’s wisdom to keep us ontrack. The writer of the reading from theBook of Proverbs that we also heard thismorning, reminds us that it is throughGod’s wisdom that monarchs reign andrulers rule – and only then do peace andjustice come about.Over the years, one hasn’t known muchabout the Queen’s Christian faith – shedidn’t talk about it very much. But sheclearly had a strong faith in God from anearly age. Just listen to some more wordsfrom her 1947 speech from Cape Town:

If we all go forward together withan unwavering faith, a highcourage, and a quiet heart, weshall be able to make of thisancient commonwealth, which weall love so dearly, an evengrander thing - more free, moreprosperous, more happy and amore powerful influence for goodin the world - than it has been inthe greatest days of ourforefathers. To accomplish that we must givenothing less than the whole ofourselves. There is a motto whichhas been borne by many of myancestors - a noble motto, "Iserve". Those words were an

Page 7: July/August 2012 Outlook Magazine

7

inspiration to many bygone heirsto the Throne.

And in recent years, we can detect a muchmore overt proclamation of her Christianfaith in her Christmas broadcasts. In 2011,she said, “God sent into the world a uniqueperson – neither a philosopher nor aGeneral, important though they are, but aSaviour, with the power to forgive.Forgiveness lies at the heart of theChristian faith. It can heal broken families,it can restore friendships and it canreconcile divided communities. It is inforgiveness that we feel the power ofGod’s love.”That could have been preached by aminister of religion. But those particularwords came from the lips of QueenElizabeth II. She reminds us that life is allabout serving one another. She remindsus that love and forgiveness lie at the heartof community life if they are to flourish ina godly way. She reminds us that truewisdom comes from taking your bearingsfrom God rather than from anyone else. Itis obvious from the Queen’s attitudes andactions that she does that.Had she come late to this understandingof Christian faith? I doubt it. At theCoronation, three swords are used: theSword of Mercy, the Sword of SpiritualJustice and the Sword of TemporalJustice. The Sword of Mercy has a brokentip and links to the forgiveness that Jesustalked about. The whole CoronationService, set in the context of HolyCommunion, is steeped in Christianspirituality. The Queen is anointed – shebelieves this anointing makes her Queenuntil she dies. Abdication is thereforecompletely out of the question. She hadpledged herself to serve this Country and

this Commonwealth for all the days of herlife, taking God as her guide. So as we thank God for our Queen, let usremember that life is all about serving oneanother and keeping God as our Guide.Life isn’t about who can do the be thegreatest or who can do great things inone’s own strength.Let us remember that at the heart of ourChristian faith is a Saviour who died for usand was raised to new life for us so thatwe could be forgiven and reconciled toGod – and so live transformed livesempowered by God’s Holy Spirit, God’swisdom.Let us pray that this country, this world, this community here may exercise suchservice and such love for one another sothat God’s peace lives among us.

The Bishop of Londonwrites a Jubilee pamphletfor The Bible SocietyFor the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, BibleSociety's President, the Bishop of London,

Richard Chartres, wrote a pamphletentitled: Jubilee thenand now – a big ideafor the 21st century. The pamphlet exploresthe biblical concept ofjubilee and argues thatas a society we needto move forward byreassessing our values

in the light of what the Bible teaches: 'The2012 Jubilee offers us an opportunity topause and reflect not only on anextraordinary reign but also on what theJubilee could mean to us as a nation.' TheBishop also refers to the Queen's ownlively Christian faith which sustains herwork. The Olympics and UsIn the wake of the marvellous DiamondJubilee celebrations, the eyes of thenation turn toward the other huge eventof the summer, the London Olympics. We want them to be just as spectacular, just as indicative of the great British spiritand ability to throw a party. We lookforward to welcoming the world and toshowing the UK at its very best, both inthe events themselves and in all thatsurrounds them. The athletes have beentraining hard, often for most of theiryoung lives. Massive efforts have goneinto planning, construction, transport andsecurity. Donors and volunteers havegiven their best to make it all happen. But what does all this have to do with ourlife as a Diocese and as individualChristians and congregations? I believethere are some significant parallels. While “Olympian” connotes near-

perfection, beyond mere mortals, it isimportant to remember that mostathletes will leave the Olympics with nomedal. But what drives them is a desireto extend their personal best, torepresent their country proudly and alsoto mix with others of similar passion andeffort in their chosen endeavour. We also can live our lives with Olympianfervour and extend ourselves to be anddo our best. As Christians we are calledto live as Jesus did, bringing hope, healing, wisdom and reconciliation inevery area of life. And we are called togather together for worship andfellowship and to do service in Christ’sname. The Olympics challenge us toengage life with the same passion andeffort that we admire in the athletes ,andI pray we will rise to meet that challenge. From the Dean of Women Clergy, TheRevd Robbin Clark

Olivia’s BaptismI baptised Olivia Lucy Sizani Nyandoroon 10 June at Old Sodbury - full im-mersion in the font there.

This was a first. Olivia loved it - shekicked her legs in the water as thoughit was her bath. No tears at all.

Oliviaobviouslyenjoyed herexperienceof churchand wewelcome herinto thechurchfamily. God

bless her and her family.

And it’s goodbye to Val andStuart…Val’s arrival with us at the beginning ofFebruary 2010 turned out to be a great giftto us all. It’s a pity that she’s leaving us sosoon, but 9 village churches are calling forher attention!Val has been a delight to work alongside:she’s brought wisdom and sensitivity, humility and humour, artistic gifts and apassion for evangelism and mission, counselling and pastoral gifts and muchelse. We’ll miss her hugely. TrainingIncumbents need good curates – each canlearn from the other and this has certainlyhappened during the last 30 months. Wejoke about Val providing the fluffy and soft,touchy-feely front for us as a team – butdo not be deceived – underneath can bean awful lot of tough love! So we knowwhat credentials our next curate needs topossess! I’m also regularly reminded byother people about my “young curate”…asif I’m 20 years her senior (it’s two years, actually!).Val – we’re hugely grateful to you for allthat you have given to us and shared withus. The fact that this post you’ll be movingto was the first post you applied for speaksvolumes about your capability and wehope and pray that you will flourish in theErmin West Benefice.Huge thanks also go to Stuart for all hehas given us whilst he’s been here: thecontinual support he’s given Val to enableher to do her work; the media advice he’sgiven us (which includes transformingOutlook), the missional ideas he’s sharedwith us and his play acting, notable beingone of the ugly sisters. So, may God bless you both as you moveinto a new phase of ministry and we willbe praying for you in the weeks to come. We’ll always remember you with thankfulhearts. Jubilee Is God’s IdeaBy Emily Smith, a graduate from Woking, who hasbeen working with Turning Point in Nairobi for severalyears

A few of us from Turning Point recentlyattended the Kenya Jubilee Seminar.Next year Kenya will mark 50 years sincegaining Independence in 1963, the aimof the seminar was to consider the bibli-cal principles of Jubilee and ask whatcould be done to give Nairobi’s urbanpoor something to really celebrate in theJubilee year. The idea of Jubilee is found in Leviticus25 where God calls Israel to a profoundact of returning land to their original own-ers, forgiving debts and releasing slavesevery 50 years. In Kibera we see familiesgetting trapped in cycles of poverty. Longago they moved there and raised theirkids and grand-kids in the slum, passing

on poverty from generation to genera-tion. Nairobi is one of the world’s mostunequal cities, a well off family may liveon a 5 acre plot of land while in Kibera afamily of 8 will live in one 10×10 footroom. Kibera is built on ‘crown land’which was ‘given’ to the Nubians longago but no-one has the title deeds to theland on which they live. The Kenya Jubi-lee Seminar was to consider how biblicalJubilee principles might be applied inNairobi today to achieve security of ten-ure and security of income for the urbanpoor. If you only earn 300-500 shillings aday how can you afford a monthly rent of15,000 shillings for a simple apartmentand still eat or send your kids to school? These are very complex issues but localchurches and NGOs like Turning Pointneed to engage with these issues andseek ways to ensure the voice of the ur-ban poor is not silenced.
