On July 9, 2007 Travis Fortson stopped on Interstate 85 to help a driver who had lost control of his car. Unfortunately Travis was subsequently hit by an 18-Wheeler and needed 14 pints of blood over the next few

days. He is grateful to his family, his friends, and the many people he doesn’t even know who donated blood..

Whether in our community or beyond, blood donors perform daily miracles. Statistics show that about every two seconds someone will need blood. It could be a young child undergoing chemotherapy, a victim of a car accident, or a patient receiving an organ transplant. There’s also a good chance you or I will need a blood transfusion in our lifetime.

With your help we never have to consider this question, “Will there be enough of this life-saving gift available the day I, you, a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker needs it?” You have shown each year that the answer will be a resounding, “yes!”

While The Blood Connection’s high standard of quality and service continues to be made possible because of selfless and loyal blood donors, it is also made possible by a dedicated staff of employees and volunteers who view themselves as stewards of the blood supply. These stewards are the heart of our organization, sharing a common vision and a dedication to the mission.

New Woodruff Road Donation CenterOn March 15, The Blood Connection proudly opened its new flagship donation center located at 435 Woodruff Road. The new facility is spacious, state-of-the-art, modern, and, most important, designed with the donor in mind!

The Blood Connection embraces a nature-inspired theme to create a welcoming and comforting environment. An abundance of natural light, calming colors, and views of landscaped gardens creates a relaxing setting.

The unique setting and warm, friendly staff all create the ultimate donation experience.

Refurbished Blood VesselsIn 2010, The Blood Connection refurbished two of its total seven bus fleet. The blood mobiles, like the fixed site donation centers, have been updated and re-designed with the donor in mind! On the outside TBC still utilizes its signature red and white colors to ensure recognition and maintain visibility while moving around the community. On the inside, noticeable updates have been made to enhance the donation experience. Donors enjoy flat panel TVs and headphones at every bed, beds positioned for privacy, and tubing and equipment is hidden from view. The overall interior has been designed with cool, coordinating blue colors that are soothing from the moment a donor comes aboard.

Marketing Blood DrivesIn 2010, TBC once again partnered with families who honored fallen heroes and loved ones, and with companies that took blood donation to new levels of awareness and action.

TBC remembered Precious Gambrell, a young child who lost her battle with sickle cell disease; honored Captain Kimberly Hampton, a young American hero who died in Iraq; and saluted Trooper Eric Nicholson who was shot and killed in the line of duty and who had just donated blood a few hours before he was killed.

TBC is grateful for these life stories that motivate the community to action, year after year.

Powerful partnerships with the Greenville Drive (“Donor All Star” campaign), Entercom Radio (“Rock-n-Roll-Up-Your Sleeve”), and Bruster’s (“Pint for a Pint”) continued to drive current and new donors to donate blood. The commitment to the well-being of the community by these organizations is inspiring.

Donor Retention ProgramsFinding and retaining first time donors is critical to ensure an ongoing, strong blood supply. The Blood Connection recognizes and offers a rewards program to younger donors not only as a thank you, but as a way to instill the important pattern of blood donation and giving back to one’s community through blood donation.

When donors give blood for the first time, they receive a brochure thanking them for donating. The brochure explains that their second, and third donations (within a year of their original donation) will qualify them for a music card and Starbucks gift card. The Blood Connection sends unique reminders to encourage donations.

This program has been very successful and in 2010 29% of first time donors gave a second time, and 58% of those gave a third time. These donors are on their way to being life-long blood donors and helping save many lives.

Biologics Processing Center

The Blood Connection has an outstanding legacy of community service that started in 1962 with the recruitment of volunteer blood donors for hospitals. It continues today as a state of the art biologics manufacturer that collects, processes, and distributes biologic products and services for local and regional hospitals. Centralization of donor recruitment, blood collection, and inventory management reduces waste, prevents delayed surgeries, and provides local hospitals with efficiencies and cost reductions that are unparalleled in the industry.

In 2010, The Blood Connection purchased, for the laboratory, a fully automated blood grouping analyzer called the Beckman Coulter PK 7300. The analyzer uses a proven system of haemagglutination in patented terraced micro-plates to carry out blood grouping while extra features provide for safety and traceability in both hardware and software. The Blood Connection utilizes the PK 7300 to perform simultaneous ABO/Rh determination, Syphilis and Cytomegalovirus testing that provides economies in labor and materials.

Hannah had an inoperable brain tumor and was given chemotherapy and radiation treatments followed by monthly blood transfusions. Today Hannah thrives, and she and her family

are so grateful for the many blood donors who helped make a difference. .

Looking Forward

The new year is proving to be a solid one for The Blood Connection and our community. We are excited to be collecting blood in our neighboring counties of Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee. Two buses have been purchased and refurbished to serve this area and we will be breaking ground in May for a new blood donation center located at 270 North Grove Medical Park Drive in Spartanburg as well. TBC is also now providing products to four additional hospitals including Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Village Hospital at Pelham, Mary Black Health System, and Wallace Thomson Hospital.

We continue to improve and update our existing buses and centers to ensure our donors enjoy their donation experience. Our new blood donation center in Greenwood, located at 431 Old Abbeville Hwy, opened March 21st. It embodies all of the modern, welcoming features of the Woodruff Road Donation Center and offers a more visible and convenient location for the community.
