In September, Odebrecht Venezuela began

the construction work for the Second Bridge

over Maracaibo Lake, located in Zulia State,

known as the Nigale Bridge. The new bridge,

which will have four vehicle channels and two

railroads, will be the largest road and railway

bridge in terms of extension in Latin America,

with its 12.4 km.

On September 17, the first pilaster of the

bridge’s Western viaduct was placed in the

municipality of Mara. The event included

the presence of Members of the company,

representatives from the Ministry of Land

Transport and from the company PDVSA

Ingeniería y Construcción.

The second bridge will contribute toward

the region’s economic, social and cultural

development, facilitating the future commerce

between the Central region of Venezuela and

other South American countries, improving

the fluidity of the commercial exchange and

people’s mobility.

Currently, Zulia has only one option to cross

Maracaibo Lake, the Rafael Urdaneta Bridge,

constructed 50 years ago. The Nigale Bridge pays

tribute to Chief Nigale, the indigenous warrior

of the Los Zapara tribe, which came from Zapara

Island, located on the lake.

During the first months of this year, Rota

das Bandeiras – an Odebrecht TransPort

company – recorded the lowest rate of

accidents on the highways that form the Dom

Pedro Corridor since 2010, a year in which the

data began to be compiled and disclosed by

the concessionaire. There were 237 incidents

per month, down from the 238.8 recorded

during the second half of 2011 – the lowest

figure until then.

In absolute numbers, the period between

January to June 2012 represents the six-

month period with the lowest rate of

incidents since 2010, with 1,430 accidents.

The data also shows a gradual reduction in

the number of cases, which begins with 1,586

accidents during the first half of 2010 (see

table below). The number of deaths occurring

during these first months is also lower than

previous years. There were 34 fatal victims,

compared to 69 deaths in 2011 and 87 in

2010.

The reduction in the number of accidents

along the Dom Pedro Corridor results

from a series of actions focused on traffic

safety promoted by the Rota das Bandeiras

Social Responsibility sector. The “Smart

Stop” Program, for example, raises the

awareness of drivers of passenger vehicles,

trucks, motorcycles and pedestrians. The

concessionaire also promotes programs in

partnership with the municipalities in order

to include traffic education in the curriculum

of public schools, as well as an annual series

of lectures by specialists for drivers and truck

drivers of large companies.

involve presenting these

products to the right people at

the right time,” said Evangelista.

“The community gathers

experts on the topic and

decision makers when it comes

to the technology to be used

for the construction projects. I

believe this is the best public for

promoting our products,” she

said.

Teles Pires Implements National Commitment Commission

On September 20, the Teles Pires Hydroelectric Power Plant – an Odebrecht Energia investment being built by Odebrecht Infraestrutura at the border between the states of Mato Grosso and Pará – implemented its 1st Workers’ Commission for the National Commitment to Improve Work Conditions in the Construction Industry.

The commission will be responsible for evaluating the daily demands at the construction site through social dialogue and the exchange of information on activities associated with lodging, meals, transport, etc. The trade union representation at the work site is the sixth guideline of the Commitment and is formed by seven Odebrecht Members indicated by the Workers’ Trade Union.

Fernando Salgado, responsible for Labor and Trade Union Relations at Odebrecht, emphasized that the commission does not replace the Trade Union and does not have any wage bargaining

powers. After signing the document, the commission will be trained and oriented about the importance of the National Commitment, the environment in which its members will work as well as their future responsibilities. The group will meet up with the other Members each week and the demands received will be assessed every 15 days.

Established on March 1 of this year, the National Commitment to Improve Work Conditions in the Construction Industry is designed to improve the work conditions at the country’s construction sites. Its guidelines are the result of negotiations that took place between the Brazilian Federal Government and representative entities of entrepreneurs and professionals from the sector. In August, the Teles Pires HPP joined the commitment with the participation of Members and government representatives.

The first group of OOG Young Apprentices was selected through the adolescents’ participation in the “School in Action” Program, supported by the company

The Young Apprentice

Program is an initiative of the

Brazilian Federal Government

that establishes quotas for

companies to include young

people among their teams and

help them in their professional

training process. At Odebrecht

Oil and Gas (OOG), the program

was implemented with aims

of guaranteeing better living

conditions for the communities in

which it operates by promoting

the leadership of the youth

and their positive insertion into

society.

The program lasts 24 months

and is divided into two phases.

During the first, which lasts six

months, the youth complete the

training modules in the areas

of Administrative Assistant,

Portuguese Language and

Mathematics, in addition to

Ethics and Citizenship. The

second phase effectively involves

the youths’ experience at the

company for 18 months.

At OOG, Young Apprentice

is not limited only to meeting

the quota per business

environment. The company

developed a module focused

on the Introduction to

The Partnership between ETH and FAPESP

On September 20, the São

Paulo State Research Support

Foundation (FAPESP) – one of

the most important Science

and Technology support

agencies in Brazil – and ETH

Bioenergia announced

the list of proposals signed

during the 1st Call for Tender

under the Cooperation

Agreement for Scientific

and Technological Research

Development that exists

between the two institutions.

In all, a total of 29

research proposals were

received, 11 of which were

selected by a management

committee made up of

representatives from ETH

and FAPESP. The financial

support required to ensure

the feasibility of the projects

approved during this 1st

Call for Tender will be R$ 10

million, which each party

the funds. The investment

will be made during a

60-month period, depending

on the project. In all, the

Cooperation Agreement

includes funding of R$ 20

million, to include all of the

other research requests

during this period.

The following areas will

be researched: varietal

management of sugarcane;

accelerated multiplication

of sugarcane varieties;

development of short cycle

biomasses to complement

sugarcane; development

of industrial yeasts with

improved fermentative

performance; energy and

system optimization for

agricultural automation;

agricultural development and

optimization of the sugarcane

agricultural production

process and recovery and use

of byproducts and waste.

The studies will be

developed in cooperation

with researchers from

universities and research

institutions from the State of

São Paulo.

“All of the selected

projects contribute toward

ETH’s growth strategy and

reinforce its position of

leadership in the sector,” said

Carlos Eduardo Calmanovici,

Innovation Director at ETH.

“Through these studies, we

plan to improve the existing

processes, as well as develop

new processes and products

that add more value to

sugarcane and its derivatives,

which will certainly help

boost ETH’s competitiveness

in the sector in a general

sense,” explained Calmanovici.

Carlos Henrique de Brito

Cruz, Scientific Director

at FAPESP, stated that the

partnership with ETH

is promising since the

company itself makes

extensive efforts in research

and development (R&D)

and has a long term vision

of research: “The approved

research projects, which

include topics such as the

genomics of sugarcane,

precision agriculture, the

use of waste at plants and

the effects of hydric stress

on sugarcane, will offer

fundamental contributions

when it comes to boosting

the productivity of ethanol

production in São Paulo”.

The partnership between

ETH and FAPESP was

established in September

2011. The foundation has also

maintained a cooperation

agreement with Braskem since

2008 for the development of

biopolymer research.

The agreement between the institutions is designed to develop studies in the areas of planting, harvesting and processing of sugarcane and its derivatives

Inspiration that Comes from the Bahia Southern Lowlands

The experience of the

Bahia Southern Lowlands

Environmental Protection

Area Mosaic Program for

Development and Growth

Integrated with Sustainability

(PDCIS) – supported by

Odebrecht Foundation,

in partnership with the

government, private initiative

and civil society – is serving as

a model for the social projects

supported by the Odebrecht

Organization companies. An

example of this is the creation

of the Economic and Social

Development Support Program

(PADES) in the Province of

South Lunda in Angola.

Inspired in PDCIS, the

initiative is designed to

increase job, income and

education opportunities in

the region. “It is a dream that

is about to come true,” said

Cândida Narciso, Governor

of South Lunda, which is

formed by the municipalities

of Cacolo, Dala, Muconda

and Saurimo and includes

some 130,000 inhabitants.

“What we have to do is care

for this project as if it were our

own. Ensure that experiences

come out of here that can be

replicated all over the country,”

said Narciso.

PADES resulted from a

partnership between the

South Lunda Government

and the Catoca Mining

Association – the Angolan

company formed by Odebrecht

Angola, Alrosa, Daumonty

and Endiama, focused on

the prospecting, exploration,

recovery and sale of diamonds.

“Catoca believes that, with

the advisory it receives from

the Odebrecht Foundation,

it will be possible to achieve

the expected results: social

development sustained

through the generation of

jobs, improvement of the

population’s income and

boosting of local productivity,”

said Cesar Marianetti Braga,

Organization and People

Director at the Catoca Mining

Association.

Mauricio Medeiros,

Executive Chairman of the

Odebrecht Foundation,

emphasized the importance

of this movement and the

Entrepreneurial Leaders, who are

responsible for the entire process.

“We sought to consolidate an

integrated model of development

and growth that could be

replicated in other regions,”

said Medeiros. “This inspiration

taken from PDCIS demonstrates

how this dream of us being the

franchisers of a social technology

capable of promoting productive

inclusion can become a reality,” he

said. Clovis Faleiro, Responsible

for Institutional Relations at the

Odebrecht Foundation and

Leader of Tribute to the Future

Program, complemented: “We had

the opportunity to present the

logic of the Cooperative Alliance

and we approved the start of work

influenced by the results from the

Southern Lowlands.”

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL

DEVELOPMENT

PADES was created with an

educational and productive

focus, promoting agricultural

production (manioc and

fruit cultivation) and fish

farming. Some actions are

already underway, such as

the installation of the fish

farming unit in the community

of Mona-Quimbundo (75 km

from Saurimo in the capital

of South Lunda) – where the

program was launched – and

the construction of 10 tanks,

which received the first fries.

With the partnership between

Catoca and the Odebrecht

Foundation, two agriculture

and fishing technicians are

being trained in Brazil.

One month ago, Paulo

Garcia and Mendes de

Oliveira accompanied

the daily activities of the

Presidente Tancredo Neves

Rural Producers’ Cooperatives

(COOPATAN) and the

Presidente Tancredo Neves

Rural Family Home (CFR-PTN)

– institutions associated with

PDCIS that form the Manioc

and Fruit Cultivation Strategic

Cooperative Alliance. “We

learned the process for the fast

multiplication of manioc,” said

Garcia. “Until then, we did not

have access to this technology,”

he said. Oliveira praised the

partnership and celebrated:

“We realized that they are not

afraid to share knowledge,” he

said. “This experience has been

very important. I’m learning

new ways of planting and

maintaining different crops.”

Created during the civil war in Liberia, the

only Ceewin Community School, located in Bong

County, operated for 13 years inside a simple

wood structure with a palm leaf roof, where the

children studied in two rooms without any tables

or chairs on a dirt floor. The teaching institution

is located at the top of a small hill hear the

railroad that Odebrecht is rehabilitating for the

company ArcelorMittal.

When the company contacted Edward

Busuah, leader of the small community and

responsible for school that currently teaches

150 children, to give lectures to students about

safety railway station, the Odebrecht Volunteer

Committee realized the precarious structure of

the institution and proposed a partnership. In

November 2011, the committee and community

began to build a new teaching institution

together. The company would be responsible for

completing the construction work and the local

residents would make the bricks.

After a great deal of hard work, the new

school was inaugurated on August 21 of this year

with five classrooms in time to begin the Liberian

school year. More than 400 people participated

in the event, including authorities from the

county, residents of Ceewin and Members from

Odebrecht.

During the opening ceremony, Odebrecht

in the United States delivered 175 books,

school material and educational games to the

institution as part of the donation of supplies

distributed to 30 schools and community

organizations in the country.

A few months ago, the Coastal Belt became

the point of departure for the activities of the

members of the “Cyclists in the Streets of Panama

Movement,” which promotes the use of bicycles

as a means of transport in the country’s capital.

The group, which receives support from

the Coastal Belt III Project, currently being

undertaken by Odebrecht América Latina,

organized the family bicycle tour Activate em Bic

to celebrate World Carfree Day on September

22. The event included the participation of

more than 150 people, including both adults

and children, who pedaled through the streets

of Panama City.

“Considering that Panama City has been

experiencing days of major transformations

affecting its road structures designed to

improve urban mobility, the initiative invites

residents to use their bicycles and teaches

safety measures to prevent accidents,”

explained Alex Guaylupo, one of the group

leaders.

Consisting of parks and express ways, the

Coastal Belt – constructed by Odebrecht, was

inspired by the Flamengo Landfill in Rio de
